What isn't in the super deformed article is that this art form is also known as cupei -pronounced 'Q-pay' - in Japan. This is actually where we get "cupie doll" from, as in the 1950's US servicemen stationed in Japan during the occupation would bring home these cute little dolls with small bodies but big heads.
(I've been enamored with Japan and Japanese culture since high school.)
Just remember, 'chibi' refers to the character, 'super deformed' or 'SD' refers to the art style.
