Wow, you mean the ComicCon people here in san diego haven't sued them for using their name? I saw that and though YEAH! i'm going! but... um, not toronto. San Diego. lol.

dude, Jim Lee's tryin'a grow a 'stache. >_> lol! And Bendis just keeps getting rounder and more grape like. I love him.

GOD I miss comic books.
<------ ran a comic store for 13 years.

And wait - people from the US NEED A PASSPORT now for CANADA flights... :/

Aww cmon. It's not that bad.

I miss comics too. I can't believe how the market crashed? Still hanging on to my comics. Perhaps someday, they will make a comeback..when kids learn/start reading again?

Ran a comic store? NICE! What a dream! I would love to open a RPG/video game store here. Too comfortable/safe in my job. If I win the lottery tonight...?

I thought it was only Canadians flying into the US that needed a passport? I didn't think the Canadian gov't was demanding the same?

No, it's the US gov't issuing them. It was a measure passed last November. I think you can still drive across, without one. But flights going anywhere out of the country you have to have a passport here now. Puts a fairly large dent in that for me, since I'd want to just fly directly instead of hassle through new york *GAH* in a rental car.

Well, I'm currently planning to attend Anime Mid-Atlantic in June and Otakon in July. I'm not aware of any other ones...but if anyone knows of an interesting one that's still open and is on the East coast of the U.S., do lemme know! =)

My friends use to work conventions... back in their 20s right out of high school, (they went to an all art high school), but the pace I think was too frantic for them... finally their leader went corporate and it all fell through.

Mardun: what do you mean the market crashed? Can you enlighten me on the history? Our local comic store makes it's bread and butter from RPG stuff, not sure there are many collectors the way I blew all my spare teen cash!

Just meaning that the popularity seems to be losing to say...video games. Also, all my comix went from worth a ton, to bargain box at the local comic store?

Actually, the "dead" period for comics was during the late 90's. In recent years, it's REALLY gained popularity quite a bit due to better storylines. Marvel, for example, is hiring alot of professional screenwriters and famous authors (Orson Scott Card, for example) to write their comics. It's getting really back on its feet. The comic store near my house actually just doubled its size.

As for value, the thing with comics nowadays is that people don't just "collect" it just for collection purposes but it's seen more as reading material. Remember those old Spiderman comics? Nobody ever read it...people just collected it because they think some day it's gonna be worth a ton (which is still true, too)...but nowadays, the way it's looked at is just different.

See the weird thing about that is, 2 years ago when they started getting those 'big names' on board, the comics were HORRIBLE. They were starting the 'let's bring back Hal Jordan because all the Editors love Hal Jordan' crap at DC, and then whatever it was Marvel just did with their utterly failed 'civil war' thing (which I've only heard about that it was late, stalled, badly written and more confusing than most). I actually felt relieved that I no longer had to order books knowing that they were failing to actually write anything new, interesting or *more to the point* directed at their actual audience instead of themselves.

I'm not impressed at all with the curren crop of crap. Until Bendis started writing almost every single Marvel title out there, I loved his stuff but what a way to blow out a great writer.

As a retailer (Hence my main being Retail Retali8r) I was brutal and honest in my opinons of what was coming out on the shelves. I had about 300 regulars at my store, and I knew what they would want and not want. My boss didn't believe me, so we sold out of whatever we really needed and had plenty left over of what we didn't. But when a customer would come to me and ask, "is this good?" I would be able to tell them - I read every single book (barring all the Manga and even then I read a bunch of those too) I could, upwards of 200 books A WEEK. I would give them my actual opinion: oh the art is lovely, but wow the story tanks, or there's a twist at the end you'll like, or they introduced someone new for the sake of a plot hole, don't bother. I only wish that the publishers would remember that it's not themselves they need to stroke, it's the actual people reading the comics.

This, my friends, is why I do not participate in conversations in the Comics and Fandom section.... because I'd be sooooo .... verbose and frustrated.

When I kept asking Marvel, DC and Dark Horse, hey why don't you focus on GIRLS for your next audience? They told me HELL no, there's no market for that!!

MANGA. One word. Blew american comics out of the water, and it was only 10 years after the fact. I asked SO many times. When's the girl comics gonna be made? Huh? Well... ppppffffttth.

I am VERY glad to hear this.

I collected comix for the story and not the worth, ie: Malibu Comic, The Protectors. I like the concept., etc.

*thinks about checkn out local comic store on the way home from work tonight?*

Well it looks like I may not only be going to, but working at GenCon's Star Wars Celebration IV in May.

Still working out the details, but as of right now I'm hopping up and down with glee. I just found out.

Hmm...do you guys know of some large database or some sort of webring or something that lists these conventions? So far, I can find anime conventions...but I'd REALLY love to goto the American comic ones too!
