The Anti-PUG: The 10 Commandments of Good Teaming

"Those two paragraphs have nothing to do with a bad or a good team." -- Superbull

I disagree.

The use of Leet and the use of a flavor-of-the-month build still set up red flags in my head.

On the leet side, such a player may well be technically brilliant with his character. But he doesn't care enough about those around him to be bothered with full sentences. If he's so -lazy- he'll type "gj" instead of "nice work" I probably don't want to team with him, and I think it well within reason to so advise others.

This is not, of course, an absolute rule. For example using quick codes in the middle of combat makes perfect sense.

The shorthand name "flavor of the month" grows less appropriate as most of the overpowered powersets have remained so since the arenas opened in I-4. June of '05, wasn't it? Overpowered set, perhaps? Right...

The use of overpowered sets speaks of someone who wants cheap, easy wins against the computer and other players. Naturally, there are plenty of exceptions. I know many folks who had Energy secondary blasters long before the arenas opened and the Pink Pom Poms earned their reputation. Still, perfectly sensible to mention this as a possible red flag.

I'm -not- advising anyone to never invite a radiation controller or to hit the kick button at the first use of Leet. Y'all seem to think that's what I'm saying and it's simply not so. I'm saying these are signs of potential trouble and I stand by that assessment.

And that is enough sparring on this point.

"...the AT roles are straight-jacketed... 'Commandments' is not an accurate title for such a guide." -- Greyhame

"Commandments" refers to the itemized list of ten points, not to the descriptions of AT roles which are simply that -- descriptions, and very incomplete ones at that.

'Fraid we're drifting far from the topic of effective teaming. But I'm glad we agreed on other matters.

"A PUG is not bad nor does it describe a bad team. A pick up group is simply team members chosen, or 'picked up' randomly, out of the blue." -- Wokkawokka

Quite correct. I did use PUG in an incorrect way in the topic title. My bad.

These two pieces specifically should be reworded, as both give the impression that just that sign makes the player unworthy, which contradicts the beginnings of the paragraphs where you mention it's only a sign, this could be a good deal of the reason both paragraphs sound boot-worthy by themselves.

If a person can't be bothered to speak properly to his teammates, why would he exert effort toward mastery of the game or helping you?

You don't want someone who seeks out cheap powersets like Energy Melee

What server do yall play on that you have such aweful expieriences with PUG?
I play on Virtue, and for the most part... Every team I have built was pretty awesome. In one way or another. I love to build teams of 4 trollers any type and 4 scrappers. MMMMM so much fun. Or? Lets see... 4 defenders and 4 trollers... 8 MM... 6 brutes and 2 doms.. 6 stalkers and 2 doms is also alot of fun.. 3 blasters and 5 trollers... Life is wonderful on theese teams.
FOTM... So much could be said about that.. Like, 80+% of the people who play the game dont read or post here so, maybe they just like the combos... Or, Energy melee.. Geeze how many cheerleaders have that powerset just cuz it goes with their concept? Regen? Just fun.. Nothing else to say..
I dont really understand what is so wrong with PUG. In the last 6 weeks have done about 30 or so TF/SF... All with PUG, and only one sucked.. and that was because 3 people kept going AFK..
Speaking properly? Wow, that is so harsh. I play with people whom speak spanish primary english secondary... Or other languages as well. leet.. well leet is leet, you cant really judge everyone by it can you?
Working well together and communication. I have been on a zillion teams or more where honestly other than someone saying, BUFFING.. Nothing else was ever said.. and there were no team whipes.
What is wrong with power leveling? Its not your money, so why do you care? I have played on lots of PLed teams and guess what.. No One Sucked...

I think at this stage of the game, most hard core CoHers.. No how to play their alts..Even if they skip the first 30 or so levels.

As for the random agro heavy people, you just adjust.. You see someone running in when everyone is not fully ready.. Just back up and let them die.. They will eventually learn their lesson or quit.
The stalker that scouts, usually makes me happy especially on stealthable missions. Faster exp makes me smile.
The stalker who hits once and runs.. Well, you can just explain to them that they could stay and fight... Thats what the healers are there for....

I dunno your "Guide" just seems bitter to me.
or
Maybe I am just lucky and never really been on theese horrid PUG people frequently talk about on here.

First week on the game I learned team wipes happen.. Oh well move on. Who cares?

I totally agree with this. That is one of the criteria I use when building a Pick up Team. I love Pick ups. I have built and been on many. When I'm building one I look for certain things and Name alone tells me worlds about what I might be getting into with that particular person. I could go into it(Leet) deeper, but I think it would turn into a disertation, and I don't want to be inflamatory.
