Official "Stretch Your Writing Muscles" Thread!

Since some time ago I was informed this is in fact, the correct area for fan-fiction despite not seeing much of it...

I decided to create a fun thread for CoH writers and for people to comment!

So... here's the idea:

We'll start out sharing *one* character bio each!

You *MUST* exceed what the character bio limit in-game would be in length. Thus - you can get more creative with your language! That is, in fact part of the goal for this; at least for now. Give your favorite character's bio - but do so in detail rather than skimming things over. Feel free to do it in installments rather than all at once (in fact it'd be easier to critique that way!)

Oh - and a last thing - Comments and Critiques are welcome as with most threads in this section of the forums - but I request that people not quote the entire thing. The reason of course is so we don't end up with ginormous huge "Oh em eff gee thats alot of text" quotes all over <'x'> So... when critiquing, quote the section you're referencing and go with that. As always, be polite and nice to eachother, anyone at all is welcome, and that means we've got people of all sorts of varying abilities - pull out all the stops in your own work, but leave others room to learn!

Btw - I do know there's a website for this kind of stuff: But for now, I want this to be as much a writing exercise as actually compiling stories; so anyways...

I figure its only right if I start.

<Squirrel grabs thick cloth covered book and plops it on the podium, pulling up a barstool 10 times his height so he can reach>

Yumii dashed down the hard wood stairs, a half-zipped backpack filled with books slung over one shoulder and a piece of toast clenched between her teeth. She burst out the front door, nearly tripping over herself, finally regaining her balance against a tree while shifting the bag to both shoulders.

Yumii was late for class. Again. The fourth time in half as many weeks. It wasn't so much laziness that made every morning an exciting dash to Paragon High - Yumii is just terminally tardy. Something always managed to go wrong - this morning it had been the alarm, she'd forgotten to turn it on.

Ten blocks to go and the toast was down, the dry crumbs doing their best to stick in her throat. There'd been no time for butter. Nine blocks and she slipped on, of all things, someone's leftover banana peel. This is getting ridiculous.

Standing up as quickly as she could manage she continued hobbling on, running into an alley that would cut across half of King's Row; this shortcut had often been the only thing between a close call and yet another tardy slip. Only today, as her sneaker touched down on the concrete of the alley... it stuck. She tried to pick her foot up and couldn't. Chewing gum probably. Gah, freakin' litterbugs! Gotta hurry.

She bent over to pry up the sticky wintergreen mess when she realized that the bottom of her shoe wasn't stuck to the ground by malicious bubblegum. Rather it was frozen, a thin, but extremely sturdy layer of ice directly beneath the sole of her foot held the sneaker in place and would not budge.

Before being able to think much on this unusual turn of events, an intense burning pain shot through her mind and the diminuative catgirl slumped to the pavement, unconcious.

From the alley, two sinister figures in heavy brown robes, laden with sigils, and each carrying a hefty crossbow inscribed with potent runes of capture.

(To be continued...)

Sounds fun. Ask and you shall receive...

Comrade Hero:

Nikolai Alexandrovich Biryuk was born on November 5, 1970. The son of Aleksandr Biryuk, a former diplomat in the Soviet Union’s United Nations delegation; and Caroline Jackson, daughter of US shipping and oil magnate Thomas Jackson. Nikolai was born in the United States, but raised in the former Soviet Union by his father’s family in the Ukraine. His younger sister Nina was born in 1975, and was raised by his mother in the United States. Nikolai would not get to see his mother or sister in person until nearly three decades later.

Nikolai graduated from secondary school in 1988 and joined the Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School for Fighter Pilots. He graduated with honors in 1993, receiving his Pilot-Engineer diploma. Nikolai subsequently attended the Ministry of Aviation Industry Test Pilot School in Zhukovsky, receiving his Test Pilot Degree in 1996. Upon graduation, Nikolai was selected as an experimental test pilot and posted to a classified Russian Federal Space Agency test site somewhere in Siberia known simply as Lot 11.

Nikolai excelled as a test pilot and enjoyed working with the various ‘X Planes’ being constructed and tested at Lot 11. In the aftermath of the Rikiti War in 2002, Lot 11 came into possession of a number of Rikiti artefacts and technology. Some of this was reverse engineered and incorporated into the Phoenix Project - an attempt to create a fighter spacecraft that could make sub-orbital leaps through the edge of space. In 2003 Nikolai was given the honor of piloting Phoenix IV on its maiden voyage.

Nikolai piloted Phoenix IV to the edge of space with no problems. It was during testing of the sub-orbital ‘leaping’ ability that Nikolai ran into trouble. Phoenix IV was unexpectedly exposed to a massive bombardment of unknown cosmic radiation during one of the tests. Nikolai’s spacecraft exploded spectacularly, sending him hurtling helplessly towards the Earth. Nikolai plummeted over 70 miles and crashed into the frozen wastes of the Arctic. The resulting impact created a massive crater and briefly lit up the night sky with an eerie crimson glow.

A week later rescue crews recovered the unconscious Nikolai, and were astonished to find him alive and complete unharmed in the middle of a smouldering crater a half a mile across in diameter and 100ft deep. The cosmic radiation that had destroyed Phoenix IV had activated the latent mutant potential in Nikolai - creating a near indestructible man infused with cosmic energies he could now control and channel through his body.

Nikolai was immediately transferred to Moscow for debriefing and assessment by order of the GRU (Glavnoye Razvedyvatelnoye Upravlenie) Russian Metahuman Identification and Utilisation Division. Nikolai was quickly recognized as a potential asset and began specialist training to help him control his abilities. Nikolai was nicknamed ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ in recognition of his astonishing survival. but it was Nikolai who eventually decided to adopt the name of Comrade Hero as his hero identity, despite suggestions of several more exciting and dramatic names.

Given Nikolai’s parentage, it was decided to send him to the United States. Obstentiously as part of the Russian Federation’s assistance to the rebuilding of Paragon City, but primarily to gather intelligence and curtail the activities of the newly emergent Council. Moscow was particularly worried by the ease with which the Council had overthrown and absorbed the remnants of the fascist 5th Column into its ranks.

Nikolai returned to the United States in 2004 and was granted a Paragon City Hero Registration Card in April 2004. He was also joyfully reunited with his mother and sister, and introduced to his American relatives.

As Comrade Hero, Nikolai strives to protect and educate the peoples of America against the depredations of criminal undesirables, against capitalist exploitation by immoral corporations, and against oppression from the corrupt governmental policies and practises.

If you think it's hard being a hero, try being a hero's kid brother. Richard Smith throughout the last year of high school had to deal with the pressure... pressure of the fanbois trying to get close to him just to try and get close to his sister, the mutant hero Lady Artemis. Not only a hero, but a Hero of the City, one of the founders of one of the largest Supergroups in Paragon City, the Champions of Justice. In the normal suburban neighborhood that they both grew up in, Richard now became a celebrity by proxy, "the brother." People befrended him, just to try and get close to his now famous sister. Tired of not being able to trust people, not knowing if they were out to know him, or out to use him, he cut himself off from people. He focused on his one love, the simple wooden bow and arrow. Every day, practice. Every free moment, practice. Quite quickly, he became one of the best archers in the state, and found himself invited to participate in exhibitions and contests. By the time he was a senior in High School, he was the Jr. League champion, and even the Olympic team was calling on him. The competition above the state level was far more than he had seen before, so he began persuing higher levels of training. Friends of the family connected him with trainers in Japan, where he went as an exchange student for his senior year high school as an exchange student.

Finally freed from the pressure of being "Lady Artemis' kid brother" he found himself a true friend, Akiro. They both were practicing within the same facility, Rich with the Bow and Akiro with fencing. Both had come to get away from the pressures of home, and to learn.

Richard quickly outgrew his trainer, then the next trainer. At a lost at how to improve himself, Richard begged his last trainer for a name of whom he could continue improving himself. The trainer thought, then slipped him a note. He knew of one trainer, who lived on the steppes of Mongolia, who was likely the only person that could improve Richards skill further. So, for summer break, Rich travelled to Mongolia.

His last trainer was harder than anything he'd seen before. Rich was pushed further than he ever had, taught to focus his inner fire to enhance his targetting. He began to find himself able to manipulate fire itself, and as he grew in that skill his ability to shoot with the bow improved yet further.

At the end of summer, Richard exited Mongolia, and began taking classes at Paragon University. Being in a city of heroes, he found himself just another hero sibling, in a cadre of like minded folk. But the fans were there too, but having a large crop to pick from, they did not play the same games with Richard that his high school mates did.

The first few months in Paragon went quickly, time at class, time at practice, back to class. Some visits with his sister to be shown around the city, but mostly his practice took his time. On the shooting range, he was king. But it wasn't enough. His time in Mongolia changed him, internally. Now the awards were meaningless, just boasting. He needed something more than any award could grant him, but what, he did not know.

He found out what one night travelling from the campus to the practice range. He heard a woman cry out for help. He turned to look, and down an ally he saw her fighting for her handbag with a pair of gang members towering over her. Richard remembered hearing of these guys on the news, Hellions. Bad news, and everyone was warned to stay away.

Richard instead opened up his case and drew out the handmade mongolian composite bow he prized so much, and drew out his quivver. Carefully drawing his bow, he took aim, and the first arrow flew out, hitting the goon fighting for the purse. He dropped it, but both turned to face the college freshman that had interrupted them. Richard didn't even flinch as they drew their guns and began firing. Next arrow flew, and the first guy dropped down. Then the second guy turned and began to run. Richard focused his inner fire, and focused it into a ring, surrounding the hellion in order to prevent an escape. A trick to his last trainer, but now a handy tool to Richard. Trapped, the Hellion turned again to fire, but found himself with an arrow in his side.

Richard helped the woman up, and waited for the police to pick up the Hellions. When they arrived, they took Richard in with them. Richard expected to be in trouble, after all he was not law enforcement. Instead, he found himself facing a desk seargent, pushing a stack of papers in his direction. "If you're going to do heroics here son, you have to register." Looking down at the forms, he saw the first line "Hero Name" and smiled as he filled in the only one appropriate for the brother of Lady Artemis.

And then Lord Apollon found his first assignment cleaning up contaminated in Outbreak.

Okay..(/e, CracksKnuckles)....

The Black and Silver armored figure strode into the dimly lit, newly finished meeting hall. The Metal ring of his foot falls echoed in the large, unoccupied chamber. His black cape flowed through the air Behind him from the hood that kept his Silver Skull helmet/mask half cast in shadow save for the shining red pulse from the eye sockets. He strode up a short flight of stairs to the raised platform where the large Meeting table waited. He unhesitantly took the chair at the head of the empty table and tapped at the small control panel located there. Flipping back the hood, he removed his Armor's helmet. The shadowed light did little to conceal the hidiously scarred ruin of the left side of his face.

"Voice recognition authentication: Cyberdoom", he said in a low, commanding tone.

"Voice authentication accepted", came a disembodied pleasant female voice. "Computer access granted. Proceed."

The Armored figure rested his elbows on the Table and interlocked his fingers.

"Begin Recording...

My Name is Cyberdoom. You will most likely find this name listed as an alias on most law enforcement, government and criminal organization files between Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. The name they attatch to the alias is one Professor Derick Richardson. The fools fail to realize that Professor Richardson is dead. Killed by longbow, the Sky Raiders and the United States Government. Here, then, is my account of his death...And my birth.

Richardson was a moderate genius whose talents included Robotics, applied physics, computers and advanced weapons design. He worked for the Crey corporation on various "Black Budget" projects for the U.S. Government. The last project he worked on was the design of a robotic infantry unit. His work attracted the attention of the Sky Raiders Mercanary group. The Raiders assaulted his Labs. However, Longbow had been tipped off about the raid and met the mercenaries in force.

During the reulting firefight, Richardson found himself in the crossfire. A longbow officer, attempting to clear his line of fire, shoved Richardson aside and into the side of an experimental battery. A stray spray of fire from a mini-gun caused the battery to explode.

When Richardson awoke, he found himself in the Zigurat infirmery in the company of two Longbow gaurds. His face was bandaged, damage from the explosion and the acid used in the battery, he was told. He was also told that evidence had turned up that he had provided the Sky Raiders with the access codes to the lab and that he was being held on charges of Treason. He protested his innocence...To no avail.

Two weeks passed and he was approached by a fellow inmate who claimed to work for the Sky Raiders and that he had a way out for Richardson if he agreed to work for the Raiders. Faced with the seeming certainty of the treason charges, Richardson agreed, but slipped away from his benifactors as soon as he was out of the Zig.

Richardson made for a wharehouse used by Crey for storing those projects deemed 'not financially feasable'. There he recovered much of his prototypes and designs. There also, he removed his bandages and beheld the ruin of his face for the first time. The full weight of his situation decended upon him all at once. Branded a traitor, hunted, his face all but destroyed...He descended for a time into madness. He built a suit of armour to go with his prototype robot infantry unit and his omni-blaster rifle.

As he lowered the Then golden skull helmet over his head, the last part of the mere mortal man Derick Richardson died and I stood in his place...Cyberdoom was Born."

Cyberdoom glanced at a screen that flickered into life. A young Villainess, Bound Desire, had entered the new headquarters. He smiled as he thought how she was but the first of many.

"End recording", he said abruptly as he replaced the helmet and pulled up the hood. He smiled behind the helmet's grotesque visage and waited patiently.

How'd I do?

Perhaps but I think we can make an exception. Besides it's bound to get lost in there with all those sticky role playing threads.

People can add in one link to their character's image. That way it stays within the the realm of screenshot sharing.

Now then which bio to share...oh man, decisions. Of course I'm bluffing since most of my alts are bio light because...well, you heard of the shoemakers kids who run around without shoes right?...same situation.

But I'll post something up today or tomorrow on a few of my characters. *quick Robin, to the inkwell*
