I just wanted to share some of the work that one of my sg members does. I think he is pretty damn good in my book and it deserves to be shared with all the artaholics here.

These don't look like they're all by the same artist. Are the first two copied from other art? The first one looks like it was copied from Mignola (obviously), the second from someone like Kevin Nowlan, and the CoH piece looks like someone who is more of a beginner.

I wasn't talking about style, I was talking about knowledge of the basics of drawing; composition, anatomy, lighting, perspective, etc.

I made it sound like a question, because I was being polite and all, but there's actually no question in my mind. The only way that these were drawn from scratch by the same person is if there is a huge time lag between the CoH characters and the other two.

Copying the work of others is a great, time-honored way to learn how to draw, but, if you're going to display your copies, the original artists need to be credited.

Don't know about the others, but the first one is a cross between the the 2006 Hellboy Calendar and the movie screensaver

Looks nice though, what medium did he use? (and don't lecture him too much PMD, he's posting them for someone else and might not have any IDEA where the artist got the inspiration from )

He told me he drew them, I have no other recourse but to believe him. He knows I was posting these on the forums here, I don't think he would have me post pics of drawings he copied.

I gotta agree... those 3 images look vastly different in very fundamental ways, from lighting to anatomy, from composition to coloring. I don't mean to call your friend into question or anything, but those sure look like different artists.

The first two are definitely redraws or eyeballed copies of other works. I would suspect that the third is your friend's actual own style, which isn't bad and could be improved to a good level of artistic competancy. But I, like the others, wish that he'd credit his sources instead of claiming them (even to a friend like you) as his own. I deal with this a lot on Deviantart, crediting sources is very important.

He's got potential, but redraws of other people's work isn't using that potential.

Well, if they're done freehand, they absolutely can be. Copying the work of established artists is a time-honored tradition that dates back at least hundreds of years. And, if you're going to copy, Mignola is a damn good choice, especially if you want to examine interesting ways to use chiaroscuro in a comic book style. But copies should never be passed off as original work. The Masters always said "after (artist being copied)" and that's a fine way to do it.

Same is true in prose and poetry as well - sadly, we've come to a... 'unique' place in art and writing today.

A great many people have ceased to see the value in copy work when its done freehand - *especially* when done 'similar to' but not "identical"; this I think is why people are more reluctant to blantantly say "This is a redraw of...".

Its also why, while in former times re-using a plot was considered good form if it was done well and you brought something new to the idea - these days it can get you sued, or at least simply called a 'ripoff'.

Keeping in mind, I speak specifically of situations where the new artist has not just copied - but also expanded or added to the original concept in some way... (I personally love cover-songs for example, because a truely good musician can sing an old song in a new way, and that gives it a different 'twist'.)

Of course, even with all that - credit must be given where credit is due; I suspect the individual in question wasn't attempting to rip anyone off though; more likely the thought simply slipped their mind just saying "Hey, check out what I did!", and didn't think to say "I drew this from <insert picture>." I've done it before myself, which is without a doubt embarassing.

I agree with everyone who's said they don't look like they're by the same person though; even people who draw in several vastly different styles retain a few things between them; and more importantly - there's basic knowledge missing in the bottom one that the first two show. Which is just a matter of time and practice to acquire of course.

I'm not precisely sure why I felt the need to say all that but bear with me <x.x>; it uhh... felt good to actually contribute to a discussion for once!

Some of my favorites >.>

Blue Oyster Cult - Astronomy

Metallica - Astronomy

Both excellent songs, both significantly different (not as divergent as some - but still different).

Some people will hate me for this next one... but hey >.> its my opinion.

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

Limp Biskit - Behind Blue Eyes

I like both - even though the latter is quiteeeeee different. Some people will hate me for that >.> then again, some'll hate me just for liking Metallica at all... so... oh well!

Genesis - Land of Confusion

Disturbed - Land of Confusion

>.> I like the Disturbed version alot; the Genesis version I waffle on though.

I could go on >.>; but then again <,< that's just me
