Popularity of the Piece (and why?)

Lately, I have become a big fan of Deviant Art. Not only does it showcase some amazing talent, but if you do post anything, you are able to see certain stats. One thing I've found interesting is to see how many views a piece gets.

At first I was getting about 100 views per piece, then it jumped to about 300. Now, it's slightly more. I had kind of hoped that it had something to do with me getting better... but for some reason I doubt that.

Here are a few examples...

-Static Thunder (1,543 views)
-Extraplanar (364 views)

Now both of these are good pieces IMO. Both deal with light from a specific and well defined direction. And both are cool character concepts. So... why the views difference?

Another interesting thing is... my Marvel shots don't get that many views.
Juggernaut (355) Wolverine (93) and Colossus (446). Could it be that people aren't really all that interested in the X-Men?? Are people tired of Wolverine? Nah, say it ain't so. While I post pics on a couple of sites, I think a lot of my views come from THIS site. And I'm guessing the people here just like to see player concepts more.

I've also found that if I tag anything NSFW (681) then people will go to it no matter what it is. I'm guessing people are just wanting to see the human form is all (?)

It's interesting to note that my favorite one of Juggertha (68) barely registers as a blip on the view screen. Maybe because it's on my second page? Or maybe it's just not as good as I think it is (besides, who really wants to look at that face anyway).

I'm posting this NOT so you'll look at the pics (that why I put view numers in there) but more so because I'm wondering if anyone else keeps track of stuff like this. I get a little goofy sometimes and like to see stats for things. I like to try to figure out the "why" behind it all.

Anyone else like that?

Honestly I think it has to do with how new the piece is. If we've already seen it before it was posted on deviantart then it's likely to not get as many views as something that was first seen on deviant.

Concerning the X-men I think that's 'cause we usually like to see CoX characters then something we already know and love.

That said I still think Juggernaut is by far your best piece! That doesn't mean the others aren't good but I just love the way you did him.

Thanks man. I'm a fan of how Juggernaut turned out too. Too bad the backgroud is only average.

Either way, no one else monitors their site hits??

Actually, I only just started up on Deviantart... but... I put everything in Scraps <_ _> after seeing everything there I wasn't confident enough to put it in Deviations; so I don't suspect I'll be getting any hits lol

I never NOTICED the stat tracker till now! Thanks Jugsy!

That said I HAVE noticed that one of my much older pictures, which doesn't get that many views, is one of the ones that got the most comments and is one of the ones that has been Favorited often. I'm not sure why!

I'm pretty sure atleast 10 of those 68 views on Juggertha are mine.

haha... um, thanks!!

Actually, I wonder about the views. I don't think it registers my views of the subject (cuz if it did it'd be way higher), so does it catch individual IPs?

In looking at the thumbs, I think Static Thunder has a more interesting angle that may lead people to want to see a larger version. Extraplanar, as a good a piece as it is, it may not not be as eye catching to people as Static Thunder.

Yeah, I think you are kind of right. Although I love to do the "straight on, frontal, look-at-me" type of shot, maybe people want to see something not so ordinary.

Part of the reason I am looking at this is because I always try to see the piece through other people's eyes. I know what "I" think it looks like, but we all have different perspectives on things, and I'm curious as to what other's are.

StaticThunder for the win. This was the power of spamming emails to all friends and family members. Including wifes work, boy was I in the dog house for that one

Static has a point...the number of links to a picture is probably directly related to the number of hits.

So, maybe it's the "client" that often determines the views?

hhmmmmmmmmmmmm

The only thing about "straight on frontal look at me" poses is that they're plain. They typically contain no story and take the character out of a piece (the character is looking at the viewer rather than something within the world). They're also easy to do (it's usually the first sort of pose people do) and the pose doesn't say much about the character. A well done SOFLAM pose is one where it has a good context that firmly places it within a world and with action. They don't really show off a lot of artistic flexibility and can usually end up lacking in interesting perspective (or if its there, then the character is disconencted from the perspective). For instance, the classic pose of Superman standing in mid-air looking down at some bad guy - it's a SOFLAM pose but it's usually set up such that there's something interesting about it, visually and otherwise.
