A Rookie's guide to City of Heroes!
Origins
What is an origin?!
Glad you asked Billy, its how your hero became a hero! It also picks which group of paragon officials you will work with and what tasks you will get. It also chooses what groups of villians you will fight early off. If your a roleplayer and have a story in mind, go for whatever. BE WARNED SCIENCE IS HARD FOR A STARTING ORIGIN AND MAGIC IS HARD UNLESS YOUR GETTING HOVER AT LEVEL 6!
Science: Vahizlok, early, avoid this like the plague unless you really want a challange or have a story in mind. If your going for this go for lethal damage, stuff like archery assault rifle, katana, and broadsword.
Mutation: Easy Squeezy Lemon Peezy, Just Hellions and skulls, small time thugs, easy for new commers.
Magic Hellions and Circle of Thorns, if your getting this you need hover, or combat jumping and learn the art of window jumping, because...well...alot of the Kill 10 Circle of Thorns missions get hard without them.
Technology: Clockwork, easy, just dont go with psionics.
Natural: Council, expect ambushes, because they will happen alot. Basicly as easy as mutation.
COSTUME'S, I.D'S, AND BIO'S OH MY!
All up to you, Icon is a helpfull tool to perfecting costumes later on, but it costs money and is hard to get to for anyone below level 18, and you can make a Bio via your ID option in the menu at any time, but your name will be forever, spend an hour, spend a day, just perfect it, IF YOU DONT YOU WILL REGRETE IT! It will eat at the pit of your soul untill you reroll from the annoyance.
WE LOVE OUTBREAK!
"B...B...But Hawkeye! We know the game already! Who Needs Outbreak?" You do, kill 100 contaminated for a nice badge, doesnt do anything but it looks cool. PLUS IT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO GET TO LEVEL 2!
This, that, and a little bit of Super Hero!
Atlas Park and Galaxy City are your starter towns, their both easy to navigate, be warned, once you pick a starter town its hard to pick the other, at least it was for me because I memorized the town.
Badges are great, and they are a great way to say HEY LOOK AT ME! But only Accolades affect your character, go to this webpage to learn about badges.
DONT START A TASK FORCE UNLESS YOU HAVE THE HOURS OF ENDLESS GAMEPLAY AND TRUSTWORTHY PEOPLE TO DO IT WITH! If you start a task force, you wont be able to stop it and restart it again, you'll have to do it all over again. Completing a task force ends in a badge, and is a great, easy way to level.
Icon is located in Steel Canyon, which the enemies there go from levels 14 to 20, ICON is a costume shop to change your costume or do quests to unlock your new costumes.
Capes are unlocked at 20, along with another costume, aura's at 30, if you know when exactly the other two costume slots open, tell me.
Peacebringer and Warbringer, The "Grey" Archetypes.
You unlock them at level 50, if your an altoholic dont expect to see them.
More will come sometime down the line.
RESPEC
A respec can be gained by doing a trial at level 24(?), or sometimes after an issue goes onto the live servers because of the amount of buff's or nerf's you will be given a respec because of this. The Respec is a thing accessed at "Jack Wolfe" in freedom plaza in galaxy city, it allows you to rechoose the powers and slotting choices you made or messed up on, but it wont let you rechoose your Archetype or Powersets. DONT USE THESE AS A SAFE POINT TO FEEL FREE TO MESS UP YOUR SLOTTING! Why you might ask? Because they are very hard to get your grubby mits on them, free respecs dont come every day.
To be continued...
Feel free to add anything you can think of to help the young ones.
Bump
"Argo"?
Leet Term for Aggression.
You mean Aggro right?

Leet Term for Aggression.
[/ QUOTE ]
I believe the term is aggro. Argo, argro, etc. are typos of aggro.
I thought he meant the ship Jason and the Argonaughts used in their pursuit of the Golden Fleece <;.;> My bad.
(Actually; the guide seems alright; but ya might wanna clean it up some eh? ^^m just my 2cents; you've got some missing commas, and a couple typos that could be fixed. Guides need to be clean and presentable so as for easy reading! <^.^>
I'd put something in like "Every Defender set plays differently from every other defender set. "
Also, I'd put in something on powerw pools. Because people get confused sometimes.
"Travel/power pools: You need to get one of the first two powers in the set to get to the third. You also have to be level 14 to get to the third, and level 20 to get to the fourth.
Travel powers are the third power in the set, and they will change your life. One of the few set-in-stone rules I agree with is, always get a travel power at level 14.
If you run out of Endurance a lot, and you will, you will want Stamina. Stamina is the fourth power in the Fitness set, so you need two other Fitness powers and you will need to be level 20 or higher. "
Then I'd add:
"Most guides get you Stamina at level 20, by delaying other crucial powers for 2 to 6 levels. For most builds, you can live without Stamina till 22 or 24." But that's me.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
Just a few minor things.
[ QUOTE ]
Argo: Argo is the amount of attention the villians are paying on you, Defenders, controllers, and blasters all want less argo then scrappers, and everyone wants less argo then the tanker.
[/ QUOTE ]
Most people recognize the term aggro more, just a thought.
[ QUOTE ]
Ambush: An Ambush is when a group of villians spawn ontop of you after a mission, or before a mission, usually on a task force.
[/ QUOTE ]
Missions spawn ambushes more than TFs, also the number of ambushes you get hit by increases as you get higher in level. And finally, you can have an ambush while in a mission, not just before it or after it.
[ QUOTE ]
Resistances: The Different villians, the different resistances.
[/ QUOTE ]
This could also refer to a player's resistances.
[ QUOTE ]
Technology: Clockwork, easy, just dont go with psionics.
[/ QUOTE ]
As far as I know or remember, clocks are vulnerable to psi, but its been a while. Also they should be vulnerable to smashing.

Why level 18? alot of people(but not all) get travel powers at 14.

One small addition to this is you can have everyone logoff and continue it later so technically you can stop and continue, sort of.

First, ICON is in Steel, IP and Founder's Falls
Second, Baddies in steel canyon range from lvl 10-19.
Third, Capes and your second costume are not unlocked simultaneously, you have to do separate missions for them.
Third costume slot can be unlocked at lvl 30 in IP, and 4th can be unlocked in Founder's Falls at lvl 40.

Disclaimer: These are all my views on each archetype and origin, your free to disagree, or give helpful advice to improve the guide, flames just arnt needed, nor welcomed.
What does that mean?!
Tank: Well as tanks do in the military a tank means someone who can take ALOT of damage before going down, usually the person everyone wants the villians to pay attention to, usually referring to the tanker, and some scrapper builds.
Argo: Argo is the amount of attention the villians are paying on you, Defenders, controllers, and blasters all want less argo then scrappers, and everyone wants less argo then the tanker.
Crowd Control: This is often referring to the affects of many controller and tanker powers, such as taunts, sleeps, holds, fear's, anything controlling the actions or movements of a mob.
Mob: A single enemy or a group of enemies, they are the people your fighting.
Window Jumping: There is a small space on a window where your character can stand, many people have crafted an art of jumping from window to window ontop of a building, its not as hard as it sounds, practice in Atlas Park or Galaxy City with Sprint. its not hard.
Lethal: Most weapons do lethal damage, along with spike, thing sharp edges, most power descriptions describe the type of damage they inflict, Vahizlok are the annoying villians, and they hate lethal damage.
Psionic: Mind powers, Mind Control, Mind Blast, those sort of powers, very few things are resistant to Psionics.
Ambush: An Ambush is when a group of villians spawn ontop of you after a mission, or before a mission, usually on a task force.
Resistances: The Different villians, the different resistances.
Example: Someone from Alaska is more resistant to cold weather then someone from Mexico.
Squishy: A squishy is a controller, defender, blaster, and even some scrapper powersets. It means an archetype, powerset, or person who cant take alot of damage before he is sent to the hospital.
So your all set up to play City of Heroes huh? Well Log in and the first thing your confronted with is server selection.
CHOOSING YOUR SERVER
Virtue is the unofficial Roleplay server, the other servers are all great choices, i'd recommend browsing their realm forums, maybe posting a topic there, and asking them about their community, who says you cant be on more then one server?
GETTING STARTED (Archetype and Origin)
Now you've got your server and you see the Archetype(Classes) and Origins. Archetypes are as followed:
Blaster: An offensive juggernaut, unequaled in ranged damage you cant get a better caster then your blaster!
Controller: The backbone of any well founded group, crowd control is your game. You hold, you make them sleep, and you do some other nice crowd controlling feature's. Of course your secondary powers are your buff's, debuff's and damage dealers, while you wont do as much damage as a good blaster that doesnt mean your useless in that department.
Defender: The Defender is the friend of any scrapper or tanker, always there to pass on a buff, heal, or debuff their enemies. Your secondaries are damage, your on the same page as controller damage wise, you can do good damage, just not more then a blaster.
Scrapper: Scrappers are as their name implies scrappy, wirey, little fighters. The melee brothers of blasters they are unequaled by tankers in the damage department but if you decide you want to be the tank you might end up waking up in the hospital tube.
Tanker: The Melee brother of the controller the tank's prime function is control, dont let anyone tell you any different its the tank's primary job to keep the attention of all enemies, he is the beef, the prime rib, the meat shield. With your taunt, your various protective powers, and your few damage dealing powers you are the friend of everyone on your team, keeping them alive. But dont let it fool you, you can do good damage, and solo pretty good, but who needs soloing, you'll get your fair amount of team invites now that the new ranged powers are on the servers.
POWERSETS
Up to you depending on your style my oppinion is, post on the board of that archetype and ask about them, or hover your mouse over the powers, it will give a brief description, each powerset has its good and bad points
Example: Martial Arts: Nice Looking Animations with high accuracy but not alot of damage.
To be continued.
