Quote:Hi Second Measure,We view City of Heroes is as a storytelling medium. We have a lot of long-term plans for the main story, and all of these plans are intended to provide a backdrop for the stories you tell with your characters every day. The Incarnate storyline weaves into the Freedom Phalanx, Arachnos, and the Praetorian storyline, and they all lead to the “Coming Storm” we have been hinting at for a some time now. The Well of the Furies, the Menders, the Letter Writer – all of these entities have their own agendas, and their motives are currently unclear, but that will change and threads of these tales will be more tightly wound. The next year in particular already bears some true surprises, and your characters will become more important all the time.
I didn't realize the Producer's letter was up and only just saw it today so I'm a bit late on reading this one.
It's ironic for me because yesterday I was having a conversation with my best friend about all of the above mentioned story lines (Ouro, Arachnos, Well of Furies, Letter Writer, Coming Storm) plus a few others (Hamidon, Malta, 5th Column) as being unfinished, not fleshed out fully, or simply abandoned. To be frank, I felt they were half-***** as a result of being left unfinished or ignored for so long.
I was sorely disappointed that these story lines appeared to basically exist as vehicles to introduce new game mechanics and nothing more. They offered great teasers of what was to come in the story but I had come to the conclusion that there would be no pay off from a story or lore standpoint as time passed. In some cases, it's been many, many years for some of these story lines with no closure or even simple progression.
I don't want to compare this game to WoW as it's not a fair or equal comparison but I'll give WoW some small credit here in that they drive their story forward with each expansion and attempt to wrap up the previous major storyline villains/arcs before moving onto the next major villain. I'm not saying that's what I want here in CoX nor do I think it is what CoX needs but I do feel at times that the story is going nowhere or that major, cool arcs are abandoned for the sake of focusing on the new hotness/features with each new issue that is released. I understand that new features are what a lot of folks want (I'm in that group too) but I don't want to see the lore neglected either. Part of what draws me to MMO's is their ongoing development, not only at a game play level but at a story and lore level as well. At best, it seems right now that the CoX lore just exists to add flavor when adding new features, mechanics, enemy groups and then forgotten.
The ultimate conclusion I came to with my friend yesterday was that for my sanity and to maintain interest in the game still, I probably should just treat these stories as one off stories that occurred at certain times in the CoX multiverse's history rather than as a single time line and that I should stop looking for a conclusion to these arcs.
The passage I quoted above excites and interests me because I thought there were some great stories that held my interest and I very much want to see how they play out. I wish it hadn't taken this long to see that those arcs are going to get attention in the future but I'm glad it's finally going to happen. It also proved my theories wrong about the story being ignored or just being one-offs to add flavor to new mechanics and systems.
I think you and the team are doing a good job so far, and I hope to see these story line items delivered upon. I've already seen a Malta AV and the Durays added so I'm glad to see those long standing enemy groups getting a little more fleshed out. I'm willing to stick it out for one more year in hopes of these and other major stories finally paying out and also to see what comes next.
Thanks. -
Have there been any hints at any upcoming free transfers? I resubbed about a month ago and the folks I played with have moved to a higher pop server (so long infinity
). Apparently there were free xfers earlier in the year but obviously I missed out on those.
I have 6 or 7 chars to move and the prospects of spending $60-$70 to move them is notappealing. :/ -
Thanks guys for clearing that up. I knew the pets were perm but wasn't sure on the buffs exactly.
Seems like you're always answering my posts lately Local Man. Thanks for the slotting recommendations. -
Greetings,
I returned a month or so ago from a long absence and I'm a bit rusty on slotting my controller/dom pets.
Generally, I've been slotting 2 ACC/2 Recharge/2 Damage or 2 ACC/2 Recharge/2 End Mod on my gremlins.
Currently, I'm playing a F.rad controller and an elec dom. I also have a fire/kin and an ill/kin controller waiting to be dusted off.
I've heard that pets are no longer affected by speed boost but I'm not sure on that. Also, based on detailed info in the enhancement screen, I think I may be overslotting on accuracy.
Can someone give me a refresher on the pet mechanics, specifically pet buffing and slotting? I'm not sure what's current and I didn't find much in a forum search.
Thanks. -
Quote:Can you post a build? I have an elec/rad up next to level and I didn't take Choking Cloud. I'd much rather work it in so I'm curious what your build looks like.Because of the synergy with Choking Cloud, I had to make mine an Elec/Rad, even though I have a LOT of */Rad controllers (Ill, 2xFire, Earth and Plant all at 50, with a few others at lower levels). Rad synergizes with Electric very well. I'm at 33 so far, and it has been fun. I can't wait until I can really fully enhance everything.
Here's the leveling/common IO build I came up with:

I swear I heard some of the CoH background music used in the show. Did anyone else happen to see this show and think the same thing? I'm asking my friend to check it out when he can to confirm if I'm nuts or not.
I swear I heard these 2 zones' music used in the theme music or interstitial music:
http://paragonwiki.com/w/images//a/a...llationRow.ogg
http://paragonwiki.com/w/images//b/b...ufacturing.ogg
VLC will play these if you have trouble finding an OGG player.
Sheer coincidence or maybe I play CoX too much? -
Quote:awesome! you're the man. Thanks for the fast response.http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Attack_Mechanics
Your base to hit chance against +2/+3/+4 NPCs is 56%/48%/39% so to simply it greatly you'll want Acc * (ToHit + Base Chance) to be 95% or greater. If the boss in question has defense buffs or you're using defense debuffs you'll need more or less ToHit/Accuracy but that's dependent on the boss in question. -
Greetings,
Can someone give me the quick rundown on recommended acc %'s necessary to reliably hit +2/+3/+4 con bosses?
Based on Mid's planner, I'm slotting up my current scrappers around 120-140% acc after bonuses and want to be sure this is enough. My friend and I can't agree and I can't to find much via the forum search engine.
A link to the appropriate player guide on acc would work too.
Thanks! -
Quote:I decided that I want to stay with the E3 playstyle. I went for +recharge here and some acc (I hate missing). As for +dmg, I was only able to get up to 8%. Maybe I was tired when I put this build together but I can't see where I can get a ton of +dmg with the +rechg. With my current Elec^3 play style, I've found that defensive slotting isn't necessary. Enemies that cannot attack me don't deal any damage. So I slot for the two things I really want more of: damage and recharge bonuses.
Solo, I can quickly mezz or disable key threats. The Electric Trilogy has the tools to deal with any non-AV enemy. Open fights like a controller, close fights like a blaster. I don't even have aid self anymore on my main Elec^3.
Grouping, aggro is either split between my teammates or someone else wants to soak alphas (peeled aggro gets the twitch treatment). Alternatively, I can take the Short Circuit / Power Sink approach if my team wants more AoE control. Playing a versatile and flexible character has certain rewards here.
+damage and +recharge sets tend to be on the higher end price-wise though, if cash is an issue.
I also dropped the medicine pool and changed it up a bit. I finally got my favorite travel power back.
Can you take a look at this build and tell me where I went wrong? I like the power selections but wish I could get more +dmg in. Please note that this was my "cheap" build with only 1 purple set and 1 or 2 uniques. If I can keep it that way great but if I need to go more purples then so be it.
Thanks.

Ok, here's attempt #3. I'm happy with the power picks here. I went for broke and used purples. I ditched the def/res approach and went for things that would help kill faster.
I seem to have ended up with way too much +ACC from sets but I do like the recharge. However, the +dmg bonuses are lacking. Help! I'm really struggling with building this char with a decent mix of bonuses (recharge, dmg, recovery, acc).

heya, first off, thanks for the reply.
What I mean by attachment is that I'm not going to delete this char because he was my first char and also my first 50 as well. I'm not attached to any one playstyle and I've enjoyed this character in purely ranged roles and blaptroller type roles. The E^3 mindset worked well for me and I've had a lot of fun with this char in that build.
As for answering those questions, I tend to split fairly evenly between solo and group play. I do want to do as much damage as possible too. What blaster doesn't to a degree?I've never really seen Elec/Elec as an AoE monster so I geared my 2 sample builds to focus on the ranged and melee single target attacks as opposed to the AoE attacks while still keeping the holds. I figured this would allow me to start at range and close in to melee range with ability to survive better. My previous issues with this char was one of survivability so adding the holds and shield did add more survivability.
Ultimately, what I'm looking to do is to resurrect this character, kit him out in sets for some bonuses to increase his effectiveness, and try to stay within the E^3 mindset. My common IO build (his current build) has served me well with a few complaints; it bothers me not having Thunderstrike, I would prefer to have Fly over Hasten/SS, medicine has proved to be of limited utility. I think I can do better with those power picks.
I'm essentially looking for advice from those who have gone before me. If those 2 builds I posted are ultimately utter crap and are going to fail miserably, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for and consequently also how to better re-arrange the build to be better.
edit: checking out your guide shortly. -
Here's the second build with Acro taken and the freed up slot moved to Heatlh for the Numina unique. I think I may like this one better. End is up to around 2/sec after drain.

After more digging and reading, I decided to go for Ranged Def with some S/L resists mixed in.
The idea for this build was to gut all AoE and the Nuke in favor of single target attacks and holds while still keeping the ability to crash end with power sink and short circuit. I also keep the E^3 concept going. My thoughts were to hold boss/LT from range and close in to finish off with blasts/melee then focus on the stragglers.
Sacrifices were made in order to take build up and aim. Hasten/SS are filler to free up slots. I grabbed the stealth IO to setup invis with SS. Hasten is just a nice thing to pop when its up. Shocking Grasp was gutted in favor of set bonuses elsewhere. I was thinking of removing Shocking Grasp, taking Acrobatics, and saving myself some cash with the KB pro io/bonuses.
Here's the first stab at a build:

Greetings,
I'm looking to dust my old blaster char off and slot sets for some additional enjoyment and, of course, bonuses. It's my first char ever created and he was born at the CoH retail launch. I'm attached to him and want to get some more use out of him than just farming day jobs. I've been playing brutes mainly as of late so I'm a bit out of the loop on blasters.
Can someone point me in the right thread direction or give me pointers on what are good areas/sets to focus upon for a blaster? I've heard you can softcap some of the defenses. This seemed like a good plan but are there any other recommended areas to boost?
I saw 2 sample builds on another thread but those tended to gut a lot of the attacks from the elec/elec power sets. I'm looking to retain most of my primary/secondary abilities and the electrical pool if at all possible.
Below is my current common IO build. My thoughts were to drop the Medicine and Speed pools. Take the Fighting and Leaping pools and slot for the Defense and Resists sets. I tend to favor more resists as opposed to gambling on defense sets so I could also put more sets into Charged armor.
Any advice is helpful. If I have to give up being E^3 and grabbing Cold Mastery, let's do it. Purples likely aren't an option due to funds.
Thanks!

Yeah, I agree with everything you're saying.
I love elec honestly. It's got it all imo; damage, looks, a potentially great 2ndary effect.
What bothers me is that Short Circuit requires me to be in close with mobs which just seems counter-intuitive for a primary blaster power. I'd expect this from an elec secondary pool, not the primary.
The power set as a whole just needs a little push to make it a really great tactical option IMO. -
I've gotten one up to lvl 32 then lost interest partially due to this.
The 2ndary effect is really lacking with only Short Circuit being my worth while end draining power. I hear power sink and shocking grasp are good but I'm not lvl 40 yet.
I have no problems with its damage though. I just wish the 2ndary effect was as useful as all of the others secondaries.
