Quote:not quite, there usually is an option for one degree in either direction for a character. a hero would get a heroic option or a vigilante option. now vigilante would still be generally heroic, but violent, and usually disregarding an innocent to get a big bad. now if you are a villain, you would either get a rogue or villain option. vill options are generally nasty, whereas rogue are more self-serving, but kind of showing concern for human life and collateral damage. so one way to look at it may be heroic options are generally saving helpless people and averting danger, vigilantes usually are still attacking evil, but doing so in a callous and brutal way, rogue have some regard for life, but still are selfish and materialistic, and villains are just plain nasty(someone can fill in the vills descriptor for me better, i havent run any vill options, im mostly heroic or rogue.) yeah, im thrilled they used them, and for me, doc quantum went from a doormat you went over to get redside capes, to one of my favorite canon characters, they pretty much turned him into a vigilante jigsaw.Wait, wait, wait. You basically get the choice of Hero or Villain in each tip mission, and have to do the villainous stuff both to acquire (maintain?) Vigilante status, and to switch over to full-blown evil villain? The same stuff?
I wasn't sure how I expected that to work, but wow.
That means between the border groups, Rogues are effectively the good guys, and Vigilantes are actually the bad guys... Odd. -
Quote:I was fighting myself on this as well. rian has wanted to lay the hurt on phipps since issue 7, my initial thought was (one vigilante point wont hurt" but once i decided to run it because in character, rian would feel obligated to save amanda vines, the overall story worked...i do know i beat the everloving @#$% out of the arachnos guys who denied me my beatdown, i was popping reds superfluously, just to get the point across that rian would have been in a foul mood. I'm not consistant enough to rp, but i do like to keep something of a consistant mindset for characters. On the other end of the scale was the mission involving Westin Phipps for heroes. That actually made me feel good about myself because not only did I get to rescue Ms. Francine (whose ending in the Westin Phipps arcs is noted that she'll be tortured to death), Amanda Vimes and one other. It was because I'd managed to stave off my pure hatred of Phipps and the opportunity to smack him around (seriously, I was so incredibly tempted, it took me a while to decide) and actually made the heroic choice.

eh, is philosophies, I should reiterate im not saying you are wrong, its just we play for different reasons, and you are getting your stuff, next issue and beyond, its just not right now, like i said, we dont know how many resources are needed to generate content, i suspect that even with the swelled ranks, they still need to be organized to do one thing or another. but for me, the cop is about beating things up, i enjoy that outside of loot, queue up some blind guardian/alestorm, get buffed by teammates, get a massive group of baddies around you and start kicking and punching, loot is a happy side thing. its all philosophy, i hope you enjoy when you get your thing...and besides, i dont get "my thing" till we get backpacks, more martial arts animations, Asian themed costume bits, monster costume pieces, a Japanese town zone and a dinosaur zone, That is my thing, i didnt get it, but the new stuff is nice too. maybe someday, but i can deal with the new stuff, and i LOVE KM.

Quote:not at all. the inventions were released in an issue that added no new beginning level content, rwz and vanguard merits came during an issue that only added content for level 35 characters, itf was added during i13 which only added a small amount of mission content and only for a specific leveling band. You have already discussed your dislike of ANY level 20 content regardless of its quality, because it was pre stamina, so your initial attitude was focusing all resources on endgame. I am saying reasonably if there was a focus, and neither you nor i know enough about game design to make a specific call as to how well the resources were allocated, then trying to become a endgame heavy raiding game in the midst of several very popular mmo's is to join the ranks of games that have attempted and crashed upon the rocks with a user base that, had they really been obsessive endgame raiders, have done without hardcore raiding for 6 years now, and would be a bit like unarmed martial arts fans still playing the gorilla, they exist, but their numbers reasonably would not be great. That's all true, but you suggested that the devs need to balance resources away from an endgame.
That's a false dilemma, as you aptly demonstrated in the first quote. CoH already does have an endgame. It also already had a new player experience. They decided to add more to the new player experience and nothing to the endgame. That's the decision I quarrel with. I believe that it would have been better to create content for all players. Then I19 could have expanded all playstyles.
Hell, if they had even given the CoP trial a reasonable reward, I might not be so annoyed.
and finally you remind everyone of your true colors, cop IS content for endgame characters, but it doesnt give phat enough loot, so its forgotten. it Is for all playstyles, particularly ones that are getting hams/vams right now, it just isnt the specific kind that you want, YET. boo! -
-
coh has a meaningful leveling expereince, it also has a meaningful series of things to do at the end for merits, hamidon enhancers, vanguard merits and purple drops, all of these improve a player after they have finished leveling. what it lacks is a multi leveled tiering system based on a heavy loot system. thats it, be honest here.

Quote:I haven't opposed it, my problem with the op ,and, usually, you is the insistence that gr was bad because it didnt target you. im glad its coming next issue for those who want it, i wont be screaming and yelling in the beta and open forums about it over and over, that will be the difference. You dont like pre stamina, we get it, some of us can deal and can appreciate the other aspects of the game, particularly the better writing. we dont begrudge the endgame players, maybe return the courtesy? You are intentionally putting words in my and others mouth by saying it bothers us, that is nonsense, and not the point of the thread. Here's what I don't understand. In WoW, Everquest, any other MMO, you don't have to engage in endgame content unless you want to. You can roll multiple alts and enjoy the game in an entirely different way. I'm not a WoW player, but they have 8-10 classes IIRC and they give you more than enough slots to experience them all.
So why does it harm you if these types of play experiences are in CoH? Considering that CoH already has group and raid content already, what is it to you if this content is extended? -
Quote:which response was rude? he expressed his opinion, we expressed ours, he said stuff that we disagreed with, we disagreed. i'm sure you can understand disagreeing and posting about it.
I don't see why you folks all have to swoop in and shout down anyone who expresses disappointment at Going Rogue. Sure people who were in beta have heard all this before, but the OP hasn't had the opportunity to give his feedback. His feedback was respectfully stated and fair and you all know that others have expressed the same view. -
again though, its a question of philosophy. many, such as myself, see endgame raids as the same treadmill, but now with the added bonus of having long time commitments, a need to form up gorups with other players with your playtime and playstyle who may add additional responsibilities to your life (want to go out to dinner with your girlfriend on a raid night, you let your guild down!) and those raids, unless everything i have read is a lie, dont change each time you run them. So you are still treadmilling repetitive content, only now its hard, and only has a minute chance of dropping one part of what you will need. that is fun to some, particularly people who like traditional mmos, but for many or us, its the description of unanesthitised dental surgery. I guess the question is, should coh be competing with far larger and more popular games that already engage those costumers fully? or do they do their own thing and get the people not currently vested in larger games? if you only have the size and resources to do one..well, maybe trying to out gorilla the gorilla isnt the smartest move.

well, since most of your questions have been asked, I figured that i'd expand on this. coh is very casual, but there is definitly soem fun for min maxers. once you get situated, you will notice inventions, many of them will come in specific sets, and equipping several of them will have effects like a global increase in your defense against melee attacks, global recharge bonuses, and even occasional procc-ing extra damage, there are people who pour over these to get bleeding edge performance, so once you get comfortable, you will find that while min/max is not required to be effective, there are kindred spirits you can talk with to get to the bleeding edge of efficiency. best part is once you get to the sweet spot, you can alter difficulty so that you can increase the challenges to match your new capacities enjoy!

the economy stinks, i just got the lay off myself (defense spending is down, who knew people would get tired of shooting each other?) but i have a good bit of savings and paid way ahead, i feel bad for those whos situation is worse, something really does have to give out there.

Quote:Eh, chase is a friend of mine for nearly 30 years, we have both helped each other at different times and i know that were i to suddenly need to take all my material possessions and give them to someone else for a time, i would trust him. he gets on my friend list. a former co worker of mine who i can talk intelligently about music and some more mainstream nerd-isms and politics, he is not on the friend list. Generally my friend list is made up of deep trust friend who i have known for over a decade and have shared some experiences that indicate i could trust them seriously those are my facebook friends...or girls i really wanted to @#$%This tier system mentality on friends has always messed with me. I have no idea how tall some of you are, but that doesn't mean they are lesser friends.
Also the phrase "Real life". Barring an Inception like twist, this is real exchange you and I are having...
for some years i posted on another message board "the next level" it was kind of similar to unleashed actually, i had individuals there who i tended to have similar tastes with and would have called friends, but when i got sick of said board's attitude, i was gone and they haven't been seen again, they were internet friends, transient, unattached, real friends are described above. -
i just saved a bundle on my car insurance.
honestly, every issue has people unsatisfied, its human nature, in beta it was worse. the live reaction has been remarkably refreshing. i have been here since 04, it is EVERY issue. And honestly, not all of them are trolls, everyone wants something, if you didnt get anything with the issue, maybe you have some spleen to vent, so long as they stay constructive, its a free forum, they go jerk, i go jerk, but so far the positive has been palpable, and the red and yellow servers..those are music to all our ears. just one thing to know, the beta community helped a lot here, and the dev community was very receptive, without those two this would not be as it is, i haven't been a part of other game's beta testing communities(and not necessarily me, i had a lot of work the past few months), so i don't have a real yardstick, but the devs listened, often over the din of a blind guardian concert, and I think that really showed their commitment to making the game that we want, they listened well. -
conversely, knowing that different people have different tastes should indicate that nobody should expect the game to cater 100% to them, some people love teaming, some love soloing, soloists get hung up on tfs, teamers get hung up on solo only content. live and let live, nothing is going to be perfectly to your tastes.

not a horrid review, obviously as a guy who played for 6 years, i can chuckle at the stuff he got wrong, but ya know, we have new players coming in, and this may well be how they see things. so i took notes. power flow, enhancing, loyalist/res are not jsut evil/good optimising your screen resolution, check. he overall seemed fairly positive, i loved how the no death from falling thing tripped him up, and even the repetition of maps issue he did qualify by saying that it was a problem with the gorilla as well, so i have no specific issue with it and it did make me aware of stuff i have forgotten in all these years.

Quote:you know i had wandered why they couldnt get chuck norris, stallone mention him along with van damme and segal as people they talked to, but they never got into why he, particularly with his meme resurgence, didnt want in. Eh i like dolph though.

Quote:my second 50, seraph blue, is an emp/lit, i soloed her about half way to 50, and that was before the 30% solo defender damage buff. heck, i dropped some eb's with her solo. slot your secondaries too,and you will survive.Until you run it on your empath/* with pitiful damage. You cant heal your way outa this one!Quote:I made a post in another thread explaining that gr was going to be mostly solo and I got shouted down.
Ahem. I told you so nyah.
Now i will admit, it does occasionally shake the flow a bit, as i tend to spend part of my coh gaming time playing with friends who are not always geographically close, and splitting that up isnt entirely cool, but I can understand the justification, and the annoyance really is negligible so long as we can still chat with each other. -

yep, blinded by the light, Bruce Springsteen and later covered by Manfred Mann. famously misquoted on that line which mann changed from "cut loose like a deuce" to "revved up like a deuce".

well, lets not celebrate too much, i'm thrilled to see the current boom, now lets do everything in our power to KEEP THEM. Find a noobie and help them, see a new person on the boards, be nice to them. this is a chance, how it is handled determines the future.

i'm giving you pun points for that one. anyhow, new characters for old groups always make me feel happy.
