And it's possible to get an alpha slot ability without teaming. Remember, you are the one that advancement has never required teaming. The big excuse that HamiOs have from that is that they were tradable. Which does make it different than the alpha slot situation. And arguably more similar to the IoP scenariio, which is still different.

Again, the basic point is, THIS game did not FORCE teaming for level advancement until now.
Hmm, I think I am misreading your tone here, but I agree with you. I was just curious about the statement of other MMOs that allowed full character advancement without teaming.

Ah. An attempt to define leveling in the game as "an enhancement".

    How "quaint".
I wasn't trying to define it. I was explaining my frame of reference.

If you can't make time 2 hours in a row for a TF for various reasons, fair enough, but the whole low pop servers/odd hours excuse is just nonsense imo.
Part of that problem got resolved with WSTs. However, a few side comments. The nature of the EU servers may also have less severe drop off from active time to slow. And personally, even on Virtue, it was painful to get a group redside for lrsf.

But the WSTs does help for getting folks into TFs in general. At least, that appears to the case for now, but time will tell if it has legs. I am fairly concerned with the lack of a 'cash out' use for the notices, but currently it's a pretty 'short' gear grind.

With Portal at least, it's important to realize that it's not a FPS, it's a puzzle game with a FPS engine. I don't see many people claiming that Vampire the Masqeuerade: Bloodlines is a FPS, but it also uses the same engine .

The other games I'm not too sure of, but I'd take with a similar grain of salt that they are first person shooters, if you are not actually shooting in first person.

Fair example. FreeRealms would be another. Those are still MMOs, they are just a different sort of them than many here are thinking of. They are closer to web-games [not a bad thing either] in my experience. Also, I'm not certain but Pirates of the Burning Sea may also apply.

    Quote:
First off, that wasn't my argument. Second off, you're assuming that you're the one who is being logical here.
You misunderstood me. I was saying that even if it 'all other MMOs' did it 'this' way, that does make it the right way. It's a logically fallacy of the status-quo. I was attacking my questions themselves as not being a logical argument. The question regarding other MMOs was honest curiosity, it was not meant as an argument against your position. What other MMO do [or don't do] is irrelevant to the question as to what this MMO 'should' do.

I will ask it another way. Please try for a cogent answer.

At what point in leveling from 1 to 50 is teaming REQUIRED in CoH?
Then the problem, specifically, is the term "Level Shift". Ok .

For my view, a level [especially in this game] is just another character-wise power increase.

I do acknowledge there are differences between levels and the more broad set of power increases, typically it comes into play more when you consider the Purple Patch [for this game anyway]. But, with how the difference between the Uncommon and the Rare Alpha Slot ability is staggered, that level shift feels simply more like a power increase (at this time).

    Quote:
    That's a temp power.
Yep, it is. It's a temp power that increases your power for a prolonged [ edit : prolonger isn't a real word is it?! ] period of time. A rather nice ingenious way to keep content relevant.

In Ghostbusters Ray accidentally thinks of the Stay Puft marshmallow man when Gozer tells them to choose the form of their destroyer, but the fact it was a cartoon character didn't alter the fact he materialized due to magic. Same thing here.

Demons in CoH are stated to be magic by the lore.
Out of curiosity, shouldn't it be impossible to be a Mutant, Science or Tech origin Demon Summoner?
  8. At the very least, petitioning will likely increase the priority of fixing it mechanically.

I'm not quite sure how it's going to get 'broken' because of this, but fully expect the O-portal to get broken over that grumpy-ness.

    HamiOs.

The exception, being, that you are able to trade those. However, they do require a group to generate at some point. The inability to trade is a difference though, and not an insignificant one.

I am curious though about what other MMOs out there allow players to achieve all character advancement avenues without teaming. The only one I can think of is another super MMO, but even then that tends to require special builds doing content intended for teams solo .

However, even without other counter-examples, it's not really a sound logical argument [just because everyone else does it yada yada], but honestly I'm kind of curious about that.

A-hah! I thought of another that actually compares pretty well.

I believe in the Cannon Fodder thread it was stated that the Greek gods still exist, they just choose not to manifest directly, instead imparting their powers upon Incarnates. I haven't seen any mention that is being changed now.
Recluse's initial view of the powers he gained from the Well were not that they were magical. More so, he perceived them more akin to the Science origin.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to try to forget that I read that book.

Quite, as Xeaon said, it's prolly mostly star fear [I have, I admit it ].

Not really seeing the constant lrsf pugs that are going on blueside, but then again, that could just be more so that lrsf is different in its difficulty.

I typically agree, and specifically do as well, however. I would like to point out a bit of difference between other mechanics and the Incarnate system.

There is lore tied to the system explicitly through the story arc content that is less 'easy' to hand-wave away. After all, the reason your powers aren't "drained to the point of being useless" is the Incarnate lore.

It's a troubling aspect, sure, you can still hand-wave it off, but it becomes more a case of just ignoring the story/plot that is actually presented to you.

There's a great up-side to this that I've not seen mentioned in this thread: Many of the TFs that don't get run will now be reinvigorated (for a week, at least.) It makes a refreshing change from ITF after ITF and actually works to get people to play more of the content more frequently than sometimes otherwise happens.
Eh, this isn't really content, at least to me. It's the old content, with some mechanics added to encourage people to do them again.

I like it, but it's not really content. Order is awkward [as I've posted elsewise], but I imagine that's simply because I20 wasn't coming out as soon as they had hoped. Or they really wanted 'something' for 7 year.

I remind you of the original bank robbery missions in City of Villains before the advent of Mayhem Missions. Yes, right now they show up as regular paper missions, but before Mayhems, that's what you got at the end of three/five paper missions. They didn't leave it uncapped with nothing at the end, they put in a placeholder that they treated like a placeholder.

The WTF was advertised as a placeholder for the I20 Incarnate Trials, but they're not treating it like such. They're treating it like an unrelated mechanic that just so happens to be where the Rare and Very Rare components are, but without giving any regard to this. Do you see now why I'm against putting in placeholders like this?
The release of the WSF before I20 is meant to tide the players over until I20 I imagine. The system itself is not a placeholder. Yes, it is effectively a placeholder [and acts as one until the 'main' system goes up]. But I feel it is a different entity.

I can see Paper/Radio missions being construed as being a precursor to Tips. A more generic form of placeholder, without the implication of it being temporary and intending to be replaced. Yet we have both still, perhaps that's simply so the devs can gate the content for flagged accounts, I dunno. But it is that way .

Silly posted before I was done typing grrr.
I don't much like that it was released first, as other's said, just look at it as a bonus. But it causes this system to appear/act as the primary system, which it really shouldn't be. It should be a surplus/extra system meant to encourage folks to pug.

Well, they may not actually require Level Shifts to complete, so they may not be enabled. If they actually wanted to assure that they are completable without the level-shift, that wouldn't be too unusual. Although balance passes 'early' in the cycle are a bit odd. But perhaps just that they don't want to have to 'remove' them later either.

Or as ya said, different code branch .
  17. Eh, not so much, you're just more super. I guess it may depend on your origin, but for tech at least, I just got this blueprint that's pretty awesome to improving my cyber-matrix for increased throughput.

Perhaps my attitude is one more akin to Recluse's initial attitude in the novels.

They really should have a forced save whenever a character interacts with a global source.

There's also the trouble of being able to grief. Just consider how much it would suck if someone decided yesterday that they wanted to chain crash IP.

Now, yes, they did mention they'll be integrating City of Heroes into the NCsoft Launcher. It just seems like they should have done that before they started putting important information into it. Really, all the CohLancher does when it runs is load an HTML web page in a Windows Explorer interface, from what I've seen. Put it in there, maybe? As a placeholder, at least?
I agree. My theory, which is just personal, is that the information is 'supposed' to be in the text box. However, currently, that's occupied by the more pressing Hotfix notification. It should really be in the CoHUpdater at least. Time will tell I guess . I'd really perfer an in-game method myself too though. Perhaps add it to the Radio/Newspaper or something.

As a sidenote, I just noticed that the Strike Target is labeled in the NCSoft Launcher [not in the CoHUpdater/Launcher yet though]. I did not notice when this happened however, so it's possible that once the hotfix info drops from the CoHUpdater it'll inform us there too .

I find it odd too. I understand why, it's to get people running that content 'again' for those who want to. It's a bit of an annoying carrot if you don't want to exemplar down [I personally don't], and it does cause a bit of immersion disconnect. Since if it's good enough to get the Well's notice, why isn't it good enough for the Well to help. Mechanically, I understand it and agree with the premise, just story-wise it stings.

That's about my only solace in it, and well, it'll make it easier for me to get those TF badges when it comes to that at least.

Sister Psyche and Silver Mantis apparently (February 22nd to February 28th).

I dunno about that one to be honest. And it does mean we get to do sub-50 content in the 'grind' for Very Rare Alpha Slots.
