Yeah, that's about it.
Have to apologise if I've come across as rather tarty with the thread: it's something of a running frustration with MMOs and me. Seen a lot, and I do mean a LOT, of characters in WoW, Neocron, Everquest, etc, fall foul of the "I can do anything I want" train of thought. With the SoA being attached to something a little more defined than most factions in the game, I just want people to keep in mind just how brutal Arachnos really is in the lore.
If you're going to involve them in your SoA storyline, then please take the time to deal with it in a convincing manner. Crab Spider legs or not, a faction that big, that powerful and that remorseless really isn't going to be as democratic or understandable as Statesman and co. -
I'll concede on that point then, if for no other reason than peace.
I swear to god though, the moment I get whiff of "I r stoles ;D" or "I r against Arachnos ;D" storylines from anyone playing a VEAT, I'll be making Heather Mills' rants look tame. -
Why roll a Soldier of Arachnos if you're not...y'know...going to be a Soldier of Arachnos in some form?
The uniform is probably the most distinct thing players can wear at the moment, after all. Especially once you factor in the Arachnos mace, the Crab limbs, etc. I don't see how anyone can viably handwave all that if they're not related to Recluse and company. -
[ QUOTE ]
Everyone likes to put a personal spin on their character. Kheldians and SoAs seem initially to be quite restrictive and so people bend the rules to be individual. You can't really go telling people that they can't do that, but at the same time there are limits to how far these things will stretch, in my opinion.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exactly. Granted, I've been quite aggressive in this thread...but the moment anyone makes the source of their technology or their "true" loyalties public, that's when I'll start getting grumpy with people.
Double agents, sure, spies, sure, alternate universe agents, sure.
Blatantly stolen equipment? Strutting around as a Fortunata armour, declaring how pitiful Recluse is? That's when it just gets daft. Even a game as relatively open as City of Villains is going to have its limitations. If you want people to respect your canon, then you need to respect the game's canon in return. -
OK, let me phrase it differently then:
This community has often ignored, or belittled, Heroes that incite violence against other Heroes, those who have launched plots that tamper with the base canon but can't be interfered with (Doomsday plots spring to mind) and so on.
Why should Villains be able to get away with this and the lore surrounding VEATs? Why is it justified to ignore a Hero with a record of blue-on-blue murders, but not justified to ignore a Villain traipsing around in stolen Arachnos equipment serving anyone other than Recluse's army?
This is what narks me about the whole subject. Seems to be a huge degree of double standards going on for what's viable and what's not.
I don't see the difference here. Both strike me as god-moding: you're playing one thing, but ignoring the blowback that would occur. I hope I'm just mistaken here, but it doesn't seem this way of thinking is being held up across the board. -
Actually, you are a member of Arachnos - Desslock later uses you as a mole within the organisation (Bane Spiders are part of the Hive Mind, Crab Spiders get the aformentioned neural surgery, Widows are promoted BECAUSE they're in Arachnos, etc). You're just not attached to a platoon due to your "sudden" status as Destined One.
Destined Ones aren't freed from Arachnos (not right away at least...), but they get benefits from the group itself for being on the list. -
[ QUOTE ]
Half the contacts you encounter give out some form of defeat Archnos mission and with little to no consequence.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, because the players would holler their backsides off if the actions they undertook were to negatively effect the character. Plus in regards to Burke, you wipe out all witnesses to your actions in an atmosphere that already leads to strained tension between Widow and Mako - you're not flaunting the equipment you have or the actions you've done in an open setting which I can see people doing with the VEAT.
If someone wants to ignore the very real repercussions that would happen by them stealing Arachnos equipment, or impersonating Arachnos personnel, and being found out...I'm just going to do what the community did with my earlier Hero Killer example: ignore them. If they want to twist the lore or fudge what would happen to their character, fine, they just shouldn't expect to be interacted with by other characters that would thump them on the nose, report them to the Arbiters or otherwise do what's said - and shown in some cases - to happen to an individual who steps out of line.
/edit - And before "alternate universe Arachnos!" is brought up: good for you, you're excused. I'm not aiming this at Arachnos members, but people who pretend to be Arachnos members, or those who want to be anti-Arachnos but still demand all the uniforms and powers and equipment of one.
-
Not a terribly good example, IMO. They're a group that's hunted/killed on sight - the theft of Arachnos equipment is something that's punishable by death, Destined One or not. Seeing people flaunting that kind of thing in their stories, in an enviroment where they can't be brought in by force, would annoy the hell out of me no end.
/edit - I remember a number of complaints about Heroes at GG declaring they've killed, or attacked, other Heroes and are acting without thought for the consequences. This issue is a pretty big version of that for the Villain side, heh. -
[ QUOTE ]
Example, how hard is it really to actually steal a Crab Spider suit and use it for yourself.
[/ QUOTE ]
Pretty difficult, given the suit is adjusted to each individual and utilises invasive neural and spinal surgery to be compatible with the user's body.
<.<
But that aside, I guess my plea mainly comes down to a question of why more than anything. I just don't understand why someone would use Arachnos powers IC, use Arachnos equipment IC...but not be attached to Arachnos. The VEAT just doesn't really strike me as the sort that's open to the same kind of fudging as, say, a Fire/Fire Blaster. Plus I guess I'm a little wary of the inevitable "haw haw I stole Arachnos tech and you can't get it back ;D" concepts they'll fly around. -
Alrightey, I know this is going to be an unpopular thread, but I have something to ask...
...if you're going to roll a Soldier of Arachnos in issue 12, please, please, please, please, please respect the basic storyline behind them if you're going to use the powers ICly. That is to say you're a part of Arachnos (at least "officially"), you're only part of Project Destiny due to your own interference with the list (not that Kalinda and company know...), and that you're not a god-like spirit of the dead possessing a suit of Crab Spider armour to bring salvation to the Rogue Isles.
I'm all for creativity, I'm all for freedom, but with this specific instance...an SoA who isn't roleplayed as part of Arachnos (when in uniform!) strikes me as rather fiddly and cumbersome to deal with. NCSoft's intentions are pretty clear with the AT's plotline (regular Joe Nobody rising up through his/her own strength to punch his super powered peers in their trumped up faces) and I think it'd be a crying shame to see this potential to go to waste.
Soldier of Arachnos. Please remember what you'll choose to be. -
Right, sorry for the delayed response. A mixture of illness and Call of Duty 4 frustration has left me in a bad mood. I'm stuck on one level where I have to kill a bunch of enemies locked up in several homes, BUT THEY RESPAWN FASTER THAN THEY CAN BE KILLED WHILE USING PERFECT VISION TO FIGHT BACK. GRAH BLARGH YOU STINKING CHEATING SONUVA BI-...well. I'm a little testy over it, given the game has been sublime so far.
Anyway.
It's reassuring to see these kind of responses. Seems I was worrying over nothing, heh. Just really a case of sitting down and trying to hammer something definite out - I have a feeling i12 will hit the Training Room beforehand though, completely distracting me in the process. -
Hey-ho Chummers.
After talking with Zortel after seeing the Iron Man film after hoovering up info about Tony Stark after reading Wikipedia after playing the Punisher after reading through an old story of mine, I had a most cunning idea that would solve a problem I've been having. Namely, I keep getting torn between making an established Hero and using powersets I liked (Zortel mentioned "IC characters" and "roleplay characters", where one is played rarely but only ever IC, and only is largely IC but played more frequently...I think so anyway, as I've forgotten the details in my sleep-deprived state). As you can imagine this leads to a lot of frustration on my end as things just won't settle.
Enter Tony Stark.
He was the perfect point of reference for someone in my situation. An interesting main character? Check. Super powered? Check. Multiple suits to deal with various situations? Check. See how this lines up? By taking inspiration from him, I can still have the coherent, single-character plot line running but also legitimately spread across the archetypes without diluting my ideas or coming up with anything too convoluted. Unfortunately, this also brings its own complication.
Namely, at which point would such an idea cross over from "oh Syra, you sly old dog, I know where you're getting your ideas" to "[censored] Syra, you imagination deprived ninny, come up with your own ideas
"? That, my friends, is where I struggle!
I love Stark, I love the Iron Man suits, I love the whole ambience surrounding him. Just...I struggle trying to implement those ideas into roleplay and make them my own, rather than a second-rate knock-off of someone else's. Hopefully that makes sense.
I'm gonna go sleep now, but thanks in advance to anyone who responds! I'll make a more coherent post in the morning. -
I'm sure you've heard the news alread, so...what story arcs are you guys going to create?
For me, it'll be first things first. I am so, so, so, so, so, SO going to have the player travel back in time and experience events that happened in my character's backstory. Her appointment to Arachnos, the failed raid on Paragon City, the death of her rivals and and and...OMG.
D:
So many ideas can be made a reality. >_< -
See, I don't necessarily think that the Coming Storm and Fifth Column are unrelated events. Kheldians are bound to Council troops, and Requiem himself is a symbiote - what if the latter's desire to get back to his former glory overrides even the slightest hint of compassion towards the rest of the world?
Promise that the Fifth would be more brutal than ever? Check.
Promise that the Fifth'll return in the near future? Check.
Requiem's little ego exploding after being punctured by The Center? Check.
I'll eat a Cadbury's Creme Egg if my theory is wrong, but I've got such a strong feeling about the plot to come. -
It might be silly, but I've been thinking...and I'm starting to believe that the VEATs will be Fifth Column double agents! What craziness am I basing this on? Well:
1.) First and foremost, the VEATs are described as "infiltrating Arachnos from within". I doubt they'd have you playing a Hero, and the Fifth Column...
2.) ...aren't adverse to having sleeper agents or double agents within other groups. The end of one of the Ouroboros Task Forces makes a very big point to stress how their "time will come again", with their soldiers being urged to remain in organisations such as the Council.
3.) Recluse and the Fifth have history together. What better way to explore that red-side by having you directly involved?
4.) The Fifth Column are one of the most, if not THE most, popular villain groups in the game. With Positron's increased focus on "giving the players what they want" (heck, the whole idea of becoming a member of an NPC faction is a direct result of that mantra), this would fit perfectly with that request.
5.) The Fifth Column are still due for their big comeback, as Manticore has stated in the past. Again, what better way to orchestrate their return by having players involved?
This is just my own theory, and there are sure to be some gaping holes, but it's been swimming around in my head for a while. -
[ QUOTE ]
Who started beeing pedantic here ?
[/ QUOTE ]
You when you went on about what "lost" meant.
[ QUOTE ]
And my arguments havent been dismantled.
[/ QUOTE ]
Indeed they have. Your complaints are based on a minority of powers, your interpretation of the "lost" comment in the VEAT video is hideously mistaken and you keep making references to posts on the US that don't support your viewpoint at all.
That's dismantled.
[ QUOTE ]
Well its no use to reply to your posts, since all you want is to provoke.
Your opinion is right and the only one that counts Syry, and you know everything about SoA.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thank you. I'm glad you've come around to this. The sooner more people do so, the more serene these forums will be.
[ QUOTE ]
Hope you dont have to rewrite your bio in wikipedia when things dont turn out they way you seem to know.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't have a bio on Wikipedia.
^---- THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF BEING PEDANTIC. -
[ QUOTE ]
Syracuse if you want to be picky about words:
In order to lose something you need to have it first, thats how the word is used normally, no matter how you interpret it, and besides you dont have anymore information how that loss than i do.
Most of the others did understand i was aiming at fortunatas
[/ QUOTE ]
You do have access to the specialisation. You just don't take all of them, therefore you lose the others. Don't try pedantic arguments with me, Moggy. I'm well versed in them by this point.
Oh, and "most of the others" already dismantled your arguments, which lead to you flitting between new ones. Those are the ones which I've called you out on.
-
[ QUOTE ]
The are no brand new powersets. there are existing powersets, previously only available to NPCs, that have now been adapted for use by PCs.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't recall Bane Spiders summoning things, I don't recall Crab Spiders using that Omega ability, I don't remember Arachnos grunts getting access to toxic grenades, I don't remember Widows pumping me full of darts, etc.
-
[ QUOTE ]
In the video they say:
Fortunatas LOOSING their meele abilities to GAIN access to mind powers.
That means they loose their blood widow claw attacks or most of them, not hard to understand.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nope, it means they don't get access to the high level Blood/Night Widow attacks, and instead get more Fortunata-based attacks. Just like how if a Warshade specialises in their Squid form, they won't be getting the powers from their Lobster/Woodlouse.
It isn't hard to understand, given the context. Or are you honestly suggesting that an ENTIRE PRIMARY SET OF POWERS would be locked out the moment you picked a specialisation?
[ QUOTE ]
You cant LOOSE the abilities from other specialisations since THERE ARE NONE.
You can specialize ONCE.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, you do "lose" them. You can't access those abilities, so they're lost. As I said, understand before responding.
[ QUOTE ]
Do you have to repeat the word fortunata in every sentece to make clear what your talking about ? No
[/ QUOTE ]
"Elves are typically found in magical forests, watching over the wildlife and other assorted creatures there. Elves tend to be skilled with bow and glaive, tending to the natural world as mystical guardians. Orcs are opposed to them."
If I said my main subject in that paragraph was Orcs, you'd think - rightly - I was mad. It's the same here. Your thread title is about VEATs, and the post only has a single line about Fortunatas.
[ QUOTE ]
My original post was mainly aimed at the nightwidows and fortunatas even if i dared to mention their names only once.
Mybe the title of the thread was badly choosen, it should have been Nightwidows and fortunatas, but if you read the post it should become clear i mentioned it several times.
[/ QUOTE ]
Then perhaps you should stop backpedalling and changing your argument every second post? That usually helps people understand your point, even if it is completely wrong.
[ QUOTE ]
Wont argue anymore with you about this since you dont seem to have any idea how SoA will work.
D
[/ QUOTE ]
Right, and FFM carries a svelte figure. -
[ QUOTE ]
Sry but your wrong check the US forum or watch the video again, you DONT get access to all base form attacks, its cleary said in the video for fortunatas.
[/ QUOTE ]
I have checked the US forum. When you choose a specialisation, all the abilities you've earned so far are kept. The only ones you "lose" are those from the other specialisation. Care to provide a quote that contradicts this?
[ QUOTE ]
As for your comments about crab spiders and bane spiders, i never ever said a thing about about their attacks, the whole post is only about fortunatas and nightwidows.
Sometimes its not enough to read the last 4 posts of a thread to understand what is is about.
[/ QUOTE ]
Your original post was about VEATs, only a single line was about the Fortunatas. Maybe you should read your own thread or, even better, understand it.
Sorry bub, but your complaint is weak either way. You're basing your complaints on something that hasn't been fully revealed. -
[ QUOTE ]
Kheldians are totally different since you switch between the 3 forms and thus have access to all attacks in all forms.
[/ QUOTE ]
No you don't.
You will, however, get access to all the VEAT attacks within your base class and chosen specialisation. No shapeshifting involved.
[ QUOTE ]
SoA choose their path thus not having access to all 3 forms.
[/ QUOTE ]
SoA can use all their abilities without having to faff around in forms.
[ QUOTE ]
Even triform kheldians are far from getting 26 attacks, maybe you should check before posting , they got 14, almost half of what you suggested.
[/ QUOTE ]
Maybe you should understand my post before responding.
I said they get around 26 abilities in total, which is true. Oh, and to bring things up to speed. There are seven re-used powers, but the original ones you missed out on:
Darts shot from the hands.
A larger, single shot dart from the hands.
Claw attacks that animate a costume piece(!) when activated.
The Omega ability.
Bane Spider summons (if summoning something is a "recycled" ability, then every offensive ability is recycled because it does damage).
A thrust attack with the completely unique, VEAT-only rifle.
Ranged attacks from the Crab Spider arms that do energy damage.
Ranged attacks from the Crab arms that appear to do lethal damage.
So far, then, there's more unique abilities than recycled ones. -
[ QUOTE ]
7 fortunata attacks, how many attacks you think there will be 20 ?
[/ QUOTE ]
Warshades and Peacebringers have in the region of 26 abilities. Given we've only seen a handful of abilities from the starting powerset, and even less from the specialisation, I'd say there was plenty to come yet. -
[ QUOTE ]
I am saying my opinion about the stuff i have seen í didnt say a word about the powers not shown in the video.
[/ QUOTE ]
"In my opinion a brandnew powerset should at least have 70% new unique animations or looks."
Have we seen most of the new powersets? No. -
What an amusingly irrelevant post you're quoting, given it goes on about numbers, rather than the look of something we haven't seen the entirety of.
FFM's response stands. You're grumbling and decrying something you've only seen parts of. That doesn't even come close to discussing salvage drop rates.
-
[ QUOTE ]
Bane Spiders: to retain their Executioner strike (maybe they will keep this) albeit not as strong...i seem to recall an NPC executioner strike is almost a oneshot and for banes Pets to not be timed and to have MM controls (probably not gonna happen)
[/ QUOTE ]
I forget who confirmed this, either BAB or Castle, but Bane Spiders will be getting their Executioner's Strike. It'll "only" be around 40% of a Stalker's AS power, though.
