Quote:I have to agree, don't buy a pre-built.The first two I'm kinda "meh" on due to the fact that they're AMD FX.
Yeah, they're cheap. They're also going to underperform an i5 running at slower clock speeds.
The last I wouldn't touch because there isn't a breakdown of the actual hardware in the system.
If your choices at HH Gregg are the similar, I'm going to say "Just do yourself a favor and build".
Yes, your time is NOT worthless to you. But you're still going to wind up with a better system and better bang for your buck.
I hate to harangue you about it. But it's honestly how I feel. -
There is no point in rescuing a single core P4 socket 775 CPU.
Its much more cost effective to just bite the bullet and buy a New MB, CPU and Memory.
Even the Sandy Bridge based "celerons" are a HUGE upgrade over a P4. -
The biggest problem is going to be the low end PSU that comes with your machine.
AMD/ATI 6570 should cover your needs and be low power enough for your PSU.
Nvidia GT 430/440 would be the way to go if you prefer nvidia.
Keep in mind that the evil marketing departments are out there to fool you, so don't assume the GT 520 is a better card, it sadly is a worse card. -
Quote:ATI/AMD video cards are fine IF you use drivers that don't cause issues.Okay, so are there any computer companies that you guys recommend over others? Any to absolutely stay away from? What do you think about All-in-One computers? I'm very hesitant about those, but that could be just because I've never owned one before. but they seem like they'd lack the customization capabilities of a desktop.
But HH Gregg and Newegg look like they have some decent deals going on right now. I may need to replace the graphic card on some of them, but everything else looks good (and yes, I know that this would likely void the warranty and that I need to make sure the power supply is up to snuff).
Also, most of the computers I'm finding have the Radeon cards. How bad are those issues?
I'd say start with the list from Hyperstike or look up Father Xmas' guide. If you can build it yourself, do that. It doesn't take that long and its easier now than its ever been. -
Quote:Looks socket 478 to me.I'm not completely against building my own comp, but I've done that before (with this comp), so I think this time around I'll just get one that's pre-made. Maybe I'll scavenge the video card from my current comp, since it's not that bad, until Christmas or something like that. Thanks for all the help, all, and the suggestions for a new computer. I'll look into them.
Edit -> I'm guessing that this mobo is too old, but it would be free from my brother-in-law. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems to only take up to 1 gig sticks of DDR RAM, which isn't too useful if I have two sticks of 2 GB DDR2 RAM.

Ugh, that's pretty old. -

It makes me think of the mission from Leonard to get the Army of Me badge and how potentially breaking that was for some ATs.
So, before going in headfirst on new "mission tech" I'd be looking over commentary from that mission first.
Good to see there is interest in this, but there was lots of complaining way back in 2005 when CoV came out and many players would get roadblocked because X contact had an AV in it in the 20-30 range. Thus came the AV to EB change.
I don't know if such new tech that you (Dr Aeon) bring up is the best use of game resources. -
Ah, at 1/10th the price it might be a bargain.

Quote:Don't do that, it makes me want to play that other game I play. There are a many different types of iteration when it comes to rapid online development, some are more rapid than others, and have *much* more inherent risk involved.
Personal experience: I worked on a couple of games where changes that involved data files only could be rapidly read up to a live shard, which meant a simple bug could be quickly fixed. Changes which involved code still required a build. Sounds awesome right? Well, a good 50% of the time (probably hyperbolic) fixing a simple bug resulted in a larger, more serious bug occurring in a live environment. Yes, you're more agile (pardon the development methodology pun), but you're also more open to "bad stuff" due to rapid iteration.
At Paragon/NCsoft, we have a more methodical approach to iteration. This results in less game breaking/server destroying bugs, which results in more overall availability of the product. This also means that, due to our methodical process, the bugs that do make it to live, it happens, take longer to fix because we plan our process out weeks in advance. We still have to rapidly (within 24 hours response) iterate if there's an issue that's wrecking mass havoc on live servers, and adjust our schedules accordingly.
As anyone in software development will tell you, schedules are very, very important. If milestones get pushed, it has an effect on the entire studio, soup to nuts.
Keep in mind, I'm not an engineer...but I play one online.

There are plenty of socket 775 MBs for sale at newegg in the $45-60 range. Its really a question of budget. If you have a "decent" 775 CPU then it might be worth spending for a new MB.
The reality is, 775 is pretty outdated and even low end Sandy Bridge CPUs are much faster and fairly inexpensive. However, $60 is a cheap fix but I don't like spending money on 6 year old Computer tech. -
Heck 1 day after i22 went live I saw 6 level 50 dark controllers in a BAF.
Umbral Beast is broken, it makes "Jack Frost on a coffee break" look like the pet out of the Fusionette school of aggro management. -
OK. I now have 12.2 locked and loaded. I will report on how it holds up.
-
According to the website the machine uses a 6850. That should be more than enough to run the game.
Try 11.9 drivers. -
Quote:I wouldn't even go with a statement like that. Both Nvidia and AMD have driver issues. There are several of us here who help other users here and I can tell you both have issues.I would argue that you are an even more advanced user than me and most others.
I've heard of too many problems in every game I have ever played with AMD/ATI cards.
I've also heard that AMD/ATI doesn't always support the newer graphics options that DirectX brings, or that OpenGL adopts as well.
My conclusion?
If you want to just play without hassle....go with Nvidia.
Edit:
Nvidia also doesn't have, what looks like, half of their drivers cause big problems with games such that people need to have threads devoted to which ones are tested and proven "not problematic" on game forums.
I'll stick with reliability even if it may mean increased cost. Thank you. :P
There are quite a few issues with nivdia cards in the tech issues section. I'd help with them more but I simply don't have enough $ and time to go and test Nvidia cards too.
Just in the last few days there were discussions about Nvidia cards having isues. (Not that I belive that whole 560 Ti thing) -
Quote:I used to joke that the #1 priority mob for a controller hold was the xp robbing confused mob. Same goes with blaster, scrapper, stalker, brute etc.I find the opposite, that the obviously confused mob stands out as a target that everyone wants to kill first. I wish it would give them invisibility too
Apparently that also holds true with the RAD toggles too. Once I noticed a scrapper would hit the target because they said they knew it would give off bigger damage numbers.
Ever notice when you do an area sleep the first power to hit them is fireball? -
x1100 is a 7 year old video card.
That's like saying the Nvidia sucks because the FX 5700 sucked. (ok, that's a 9 year old video card)
Other than the issues I had with certain AMD drivers I've had a very nice stable system. The AMD cards have generally been a better value over Nvidia. -
Quote:Yep, it was a pretty bad one. You got the car company brands reversed.Buying EVGA is like buying Chevy when Toyota is cheaper with better mileage and the same or better reliability.
(hopefully, not a bad analogy)
Don't buy "brand name" over reviews.
As far as what branded video cards people should get, I only suggest what *I* actually buy.
There is really two camps go by.
1. You get whoever sells the video card is the cheapest since your going to be running on nvidia/AMD drivers anyways and the quality of the parts won't matter.
2. You pay more for better components on the board and warranty.
Ultiimately, whatever you buy, you're stuck with it. -
I don't think my build is going to change much atm. When the fixes due sometime with the next patch come, I'll make a trip to beta and test them out.
I *might* add propel but I will most likely still skip WH and D-shift. -
Actually, it makes me smile that the devs tossed out Castle's "no more buffs for stalkers" http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=244076
After that post I deleted all my stalkers except for my level one of each AT to 50 goal stalker.
I'm very happy that proper data mining was done and Stalkers are much better to play now. -
Quote:In the computer world there is no such thing as "future proofing" things simply evolve too fast. Its hard to give up on stuff that works, I know, I still have a working E6600 that pretty much collects dust. Heck my dad is still using a 486 DX 25 which has not died yet. Apparently he won't give it up until it does. (Although I had to replace the printer which died)
Yeah ... When I overhauled my rig back in 2008 I got the Q6600 as future-proofing in hopes that I wouldn't have to buy new everything-else just to replace one part (my pre-2008 setup had a dying AGP video card, and by that point it was all PCI-E).
I figured quadcore would have been a great way to proof against the future. But we've got, what, octacores out now?
I'll let you guys know how it goes. If it turns out to be a CPU bottleneck ... I'll grin and bear it, I guess. My CPU and motherboard are both holding up for now, and I don't wanna have to go buy whole new replacement parts for them just yet.
The AMD Bulldozer octocore was a "disappointment" and is not even price competitive with AMD's K10 Phenom II.They rolled the dice, and after lots of delays they rolled snake eyes.
Intel is still using a quad core and the Sandy Bridge is just plain nice. I'm waiting to see how Ivy Bridge turns out. If you have $1000 you can get a hex-core Sandy Bridge-E chip which is about as fast in games as the $225 2500K chip. -
Quote:If you say stuff like that, I'm sure that player will have a Controller AND Dominator at 53 to show you.I'm about ready to leave for work. But I do have a prediction.
Someone on Freedom will have Power leveled a Dark Dom or Troller to 50 and already be 50+3 and purpled out before I get back tonight. -
Quote:I found the best way to get on iTrials or TF/SF was to go "level 50 lolstalker lf pity spot"Just a comment on lolstalkers.
While I didn't have any issues getting to 50, the Redside playerbase was always smaller than the blueside on the servers I was playing at that time (Justice on the one stalker I'm recollecting in particular). Once I got blueside for higher density of players, I was floored at how badly the Stalker AT is perceived by other AT's, particularly blue-side only players. I have never felt such 'class discrimination' in my life, either in a game or in real-life. It was as if by merely playing a Stalker I was a cowardly, evil player and must drown puppies in my bathtub at home for fun. I literally would get invited to teams and then some player would say "Ewww a Stalker, get rid of her!" and I'd get the boot. I even did a character name change as a social experiment and it actually HELPED me get team invites (went with "Reformed Assassin").
I have never experienced anything quite like it before or since. Except when playing a Kheldian pre-buff would get me a "Well, its better than nothing I guess" upon joining. -
It took awhile for me.
I got the hero ones done first. I would say PB and Defender were the hardest blueside for me. PBs suck big time in teams with all of the KB. I like support sets on controllers but for some reason I don't like support primary with a weak blaster set. Scrapper was the last hero I got to 50 but pretty easy. Tank, WS, blaster and controllers were pretty fun.
Villains was a little different. MM was my first 50 and it was a joke. Brute was my next 50 and it was easy. Widow was next very nice teaming and solo. Solider was also nice teaming and ok solo. I didn't like my Dominator all that much, but I had a much better time after I moved over to heroside. Corruptor is strange to me, I sometimes had a hard time deciding if I should blast or use support powers. The last 50 was the lolstalker. Ugh what an awful experience. Teams would not want to invite a stalker along so it was a long slog to 50 mostly solo. -
I had this happen to me where I was missing a vet power and NCsoft support sent me a slash command that "reset" the account item choices and I was able to get it.
the command was
