Of course you must realize that Brutes are City of Villains's, Tank.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually.. you got this wrong.. brutes not CoV equal to a tank... MMs are...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Pets die= Dead MM... A single pet cannot keep agro like a Brute can, hence why they are given taunt. Oh and one can slot attacks and AoE's with taunt. Brute=Tank. I know, the name confuses you, just think of it like this, High Health + shields + Taunt = Tank.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Incorrect. "Tank" is meant in the "grab the alpha safely" sense - bodyguard mode ensures you (and your pets) survive alphas fairly safely, and Masterminds have a higher base threat level than most other villain AT's as well. It's true that Brutes get taunt, but in the grand scheme of things, it is MM's that are the parallel to CoH's Tankers.
  2. A bit more recent history (and a thread bump!)

Combat Training: Offensive for VEATs was a tohit buff during the I12 beta. It was changed to an accuracy buff because it was seen as otherwise overpowered.

    Missing Patch Note:

Converting Base Salvage to Brain Storms or Brain Storms to Invention Salvage no longer counts towards crafting badges (Master Artisan, etc)

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Well that sucks...
  4. [ QUOTE ]
Somebody tell me if the AR blasters got their changes, or if those are broken too, 'cause without that, this patch looks like it's hittin' negative numbers. No fixes or benefits, and introduced more broke stuff.

    [/ QUOTE ]
After noticing the Bruiser non-changes, I went to test my AR Blaster, and happily, those changes at least are good to go.

Oh, and a future note regarding the tell bugs: you might not be able to use the delete key to auto-fill the name to reply to, but you could type "/r Broken tell" and it will shoot back a tell saying "Broken tell" to whomever send you the tell.
  5. BUG ALERT!

Bruiser's Hand Clap was not changed to knockdown. It still does knockback. Toying around with the real numbers for the power shows that the mag scales by level, from 0.7 at level 1 to 1.74 at level 50. This means that, effectively, at all levels at which the Bruiser has access to Hand Clap, it will still cause knockback. The mag should be changed to a static 0.67 across all levels.

This behavior is noticeable in game as well as in the real numbers readout.

Well, it is really nice layout. Too bad it doesn't recognize that I have a video card and hence cant update drivers for it. Manually or with Windows Update. Device manager doesn't even show any video in there.

The error message that I get everytime is something like "Could not find a device to match these drivers" or some such.

What I've tried: Win7 64 and 32 bit (couple times), flashed bio's, updated chipset drivers, newest nvidia drivers, older nvidia drivers, changed compatibility mode where appropriate, removed vid card and reset cmos.

Posting this from my main comp, so don't have a cohhelper log right now. But basic spec's:

    AMD Athalon 3500+
    1gig ram
    XFX 6800XT
    ASUS Barebone V2 AE-1

I had seen a few pages back that someone had it running on slightly less specs. Guess mine is just gimp or something....

Anyway, if someone has a nifty little trick for this, that would be cool. But if not, I'll just send in my report and reload XP....

[/ QUOTE ]Its possible they drop support for your card. I know that happened to me when vista first came out. I had to find haxed drivers for my video card and motherboard. They worked for a while then I started getting heat problems on th card so I upgraded.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Why in the world would they drop support for a card that exceeds the requirements for running the OS? I had no problems finding drivers for my 6600GT.
  7. <QR>

57-month reward is meh. 60-month reward is a mixed bag: very nice for some but not really interesting for others. I've been around less than two years so I'd still have a long way to go before getting either of those badges, but I can say it'll be useful for those who choose to level their characters normally. I tend to take the quick-n-easy route to the low 20's (SO's and Stamina make the game for me) so it would be of limited usefulness to me anyways.

I think the concept of being able to skip a prerequisite for a travel power is great for lowbies, but I don't see why all these people are jumping around claiming they'll need to burn a lot of respecs. If your toon is already higher-level, what need do you have for a travel power at level 6? Besides, every travel power pool has at least one useful prerequisite.
  8. So, right now, I've got the 32-bit W7 beta installed on old desktop (it took me six hours of trying to figure out why the computer would simply refuse to boot from the DVD, at which point I nearly kicked myself for realizing I could just install it from within Windows). Performance is decent and there have been a few glitches and setbacks. Most noticeable is the missing drivers for my onboard Promise RAID, which prevents me from using the 320GB SATA drive I have some stuff stored on.

    System specs are as follows:

    * Athlon 64 3300+ processor @ 2.4GHz
    * 2GB RAM
    * AGP WinFast GeForce 6600GT (128MB) GPU
    * 160GB ATA hard drive (w/ another 320GB SATA drive once I get RAID working)
    * CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive

Playing CoH under windowed mode taking up most of my 20" screen (it's some wonky resolution, I don't remember exactly what) runs comparably to how it did back when this machine had XP installed - smoothly but slowly. I haven't done much testing with it, because in order to test it as if it were my everday computer, I'd have to essentially clone my applications, documents, and such on my main desktop to the older one, and that's not something I'm willing to do.

The new taskbar is nice, though, kind of a fusion between the old taskbar and the OS X Dock.
  9. Well, I've been meaning to get the W7 beta installed on my old Athlon 64 box, but I keep getting a CDBOOT code 5 error. I've tried four different discs at four different speeds in two different burner apps and have had no luck, so I've spent the last three hours struggling to update the BIOS on this machine (I lack a floppy drive). What a nightmare.

Riiiight. No one had any issues upgrading OS9 to OSX. heh.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I didn't own a computer then so I can't comment on upgrade experiences, but I'll admit that the first few versions of OS X weren't all that wonderful. 10.0 was more like an unfinished beta that Apple tacked a "final release" sticker on, and 10.1 was basically just updates to bring it up to par in functionality with OS 9. Considering, however, the fact that the architecture underneath OS X was so drastically different that they had to run OS 9 apps via an emulation layer, I'd say they did a decent job, although if I'd been a Mac owner at that time I would have probably waited until 10.2 to upgrade.

More specifically I was talking about upgrading between different versions of OS X - I've heard of only very sporadic issues of people upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5, and even then normally because of third-party application conflicts.

If an OS can't be upgraded without causing issues, it's a terrible OS.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If things were perfect before they were released we wouldnt need upgrades then would we. Things are not perfect and peoples opinions change daily. If you can make a better O/S do it yourself.

    [/ QUOTE ]
What are you talking about? We're not commenting on an older OS. We're commenting on the ability of the new OS to run well as an upgrade install instead of a clean install. There's no such thing as a perfect OS, but at least all the Linux and OS X techies don't insist you do a clean install of a new version.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
Well none of the previous windows are 100% safe to upgrade to just so you know. I would rather do a clean install now then end up having to do it again later due to a botched upgrade. Also keep in mind with vista as well as windows 7 doing a clean install isnt as bad as you think it is going to be. With both OSes you can capture an image after you have installed your apps and tweaked just how you like, both OSes you can inject drivers into the image so no need for driver cd/dvds. Both OSes you can inject windows updates and patches into your image. When you want it to be just like brand new you replace the image that is on the dvd with the one of your pc and it basically installs windows like its made for your pc. All drivers, apps and patches preinstalled. Hell you can even update CoX from within the image if you wanted.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'm aware of the ability to slipstream installation discs. However that's extra work apart from the install just to get the stuff slipstreamed, in which time I might as well just download the stuff once I have Windows installed. As I've said, if there was a way to slipstream all my applications, drivers, documents, and settings onto the installation disc, I'd do a clean install in a heartbeat. Unfortunately there's not, and I don't feel like spending hours getting everything set up right. Even once I do, I'll be hunting around for some program I need and I'll think to myself, "Wait, I had this on my old install of Windows, but now I can't find it anywhere."

Besides, I'm fairly confident in my ability to troubleshoot Windows issues if I do upgrade instead of do a clean install. Heck, I've done enough troubleshooting on new or almost-new installs...

How many are checking this out on 64-bit?

    [/ QUOTE ]

If there's a way to upgrade my Vista 32bit (which I feel I was a victim of false advertising and don't want to spend a hundred or so more to fix it right now) I'll probably upgrade to 7-64 towards release :3

[/ QUOTE ]Why would you want to do an upgrade instead of a clean install? Dont you know upgrading is dirty and could possibly lead to problems later on?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Oh, I don't know. Time? Convenience, maybe? Ease of use? Those things that those of us who don't blindly follow Microsoft still value?

Clean installs mean I have to change all my settings back from the default crap to the way I want them. Clean installs mean I need to scrounge up all my applications and reinstall them all, and hope I haven't lost the discs and product keys. Clean installs mean I need to find and install all the drivers for all my devices. Clean installs mean I need to back up all my documents, preferences, and application settings off the drive and then restore it once I reinstall. Clean installs mean...

I'm sure you see my point. If an OS can't be upgraded without causing issues, it's a terrible OS.

I was getting roughly 100-150k/sec via the MS downloader, compared to 250-350k/sec via the direct download. Internet usage didn't change between the two tries.

Thanks for the heads-up, the direct download is substantially faster than the downloader app Microsoft has you use.

Yeah, so far it handles like a decent feeling Vista install. No real complaints although no advantages except some bug fixes on my current setup.

[/ QUOTE ]This is exactly what I was going to post yesterday. I finally got build 7000 installed. CoX will run for me its just the screen rolls so I cant play like that. I think once I sort out the picture issue it will run fine. My guess is its driver related. I will try newer nvidia drivers to see if it help. In the meantime I want to request everyone to test windows 7 if you have the chance, especially the vista haters who never actually tried vista. So that they can see that the difference is not going to be as big as they think its going to be. Download it on the link provided. You dont need an actual technet account to sign up for it, just windows live or hotmail will work fine to get in. They will give you a cd key and 2 ISOs to choose from to download windows 7.

Small Edit: I went to windows update instead of nvidia for the current windows 7 drivers now the game works fine.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'm going to wait until I hear how the beta (and release versions) work on a large sample of machines before I take the plunge from XP. I don't generally put alpha or beta software on my machine (especially an OS) unless I have an interest or necessity in that software, and I have neither for Windows. That being said, if Windows 7 shapes up as nicely as people have been saying (and admittedly I'm mostly indifferent about it, which for Windows is a good thing), I will probably be giving the final release a go, so long as I can upgrade my existing XP install. If it requires a clean install to work well, then I see no reason to upgrade.

On an amusing side note, I installed Vista on an older (about 5 years old) machine the other night. I figured if IE7 crashed every time it tried to load a page, on a clean install of Vista on a freshly-wiped drive, I'd be better off sticking with XP. I might use that older machine to try the W7 beta because I've heard it runs well on older hardware.

EDIT: Yikes, they want sixteen gigabytes of disk space!? There'd better be a hell of a lot of worthwhile stuff to make that sixteen gigs a necessity...

ALSO EDIT: You can't download the ISO using Firefox. I guess if they want to keep potential customers out of the fold, that's their issue.
  18. If anything, given the PvP travel suppression changes, giving Warshades access to at least some of the flight pool is a very good idea. Dwarf relies on teleport for its mobility - PvP suppression negates that. Human form relies on teleport as well, same story there. In short, if you want to PvP on a Warshade (as lol as it may be), you either need to dip into the speed or leaping pools, or rely on Nova.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
TL;DR version - if human mez protection really makes dwarf redundant, it only does so to the extent that tanking in general is redundant in the game.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Another good reason, I think. It's one of the reasons I've never been able to really stick with a Tanker - I just don't feel important on a team.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
One of the major problems when it comes to Dwarf form as mez protection is that it's not like the one power that other AT's (Tanks, Scrappers etc.) need to take for Mez Protection, it's more like 5. That's because not only do you need to slot White Dwarf/Black Dwarf, you also need to slot the powers you get when you take the Dwarf form. The end result needing to slot these powers and the lack of flexability that occurs when you shift to Dwarf is that many players don't see taking Dwarf From as a viable power choice now. They'd rather load up on Break Frees.

If giving mez protection to Human form makes Dwarf so redundant, maybe it's time to look at Dwarf form.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Very well said. This is one of the most convincing and sensible arguments I've seen for human mez protection. Castle, are you reading this?

CP and group energy flight really give me the impression the devs were like "huh, let's just throw this crap in there because we don't know what else to fill the powerset with."

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's how I've always viewed the design of Peacebringers.

Warshades at least feel unique among the archetypes. PBs feel slapped together with no real effort at all.

[/ QUOTE ]Is there a single PB power that isn't a very close clone of another powerset's power? I'm trying to think of one. I mean, Solar Flare isn't quite the same as Foot Stomp, because it has a higher magnitude.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Pulsar, Photon Seekers, QFly, and... nevermind, you got me. At least Warshades have Gravity Well, GravEm, Unchain Essence, Dark Extraction, Stygian Circle, and Neb Form.

    3. Between 50 to 250 merits buys an IO set recipe.

Some truly awful set recipes can be had for as low as 50 merits, and some really outstanding ones can be had for 250. However, there are plenty of sets selling for 250 or close to it that sell for an absolute pittance on the market. For example: Time & Space Manipulation: +Stealth which can be had for 240 merits is currently selling for about 1000 on the villain side. Meanwhile, a level 50 Numina's Convalescence +Recovery +Regen is selling for about 70,000,000 and can be had for 250 merits. That's a mighty-wide gap. It would be more helpful if some sort of "maximum merit price" was established, and then everything scaled down from there according to relative demand. In other words, keep the Numina's Convalescence at 250 but sell the Time & Space manipulation one for wayyyyy less.

    [/ QUOTE ]
The issue with this is they based merit costs around what pool a recipe was in, as well as what aspects it modifies (a tri-mod enhancement will generally cost more than a dual-mod or single-mod in the same set). I don't think there's really a "fair" way of establishing prices that everyone can agree on, unfortunately.
