  1. The Sun Rises over the rookery, and a rooster sounds in the background. Across the floor a line of chickens does the conga into a hen house, with eggs rolling out the side doors in time to the music. As the camera pans over the idyllic scene, it centers on a ridge in the background with two figures beside an oak-tree. The camera closes in, showing a skunk painted Neko Ali still holding a blue kitty and still kissing. Sai's eyes are rolled into a spiral, and little birdies float around Sai's head in a circle... as the action cues up, Sai revives and tries to break free from the embrace of the Neko Ali, comically pushing against the non-stop kissing skunk...

    **Edit** Also, whats the best gfx card for CoX on windows 7 currently anyway?
    If you check the front page of www.cityofheroes.com you'll find that AMD / ATi is the current graphics partner. The best performance cards right now, industry wide, is ATi's RadeonHD 5000 series lineup.

    As to upgrading your graphics, very few laptops have the capability to upgrade, and I don't recognize your model as being an MXM compatible chassis.

    So, in your specific case, a "new" system might be your only realistic option.

    It is possible that Intel could update their reference drivers, but given that Intel is pretty much a laughingstock of the gaming industry who hasn't ever issued a hot-fix for any specific game before... well... You'd probably spend less time looking through their graphics documentation and writing your own driver.

    It also isn't likely that HP or any other vendor will press Intel to update the drivers either, as they see this as a perfect opportunity to sell you a completely new laptop. Given that you stated you just got this laptop BACK from tech support, I'm under the impression you aren't looking to drop another $500+ on a new laptop.

    * * *

    I think I also need to state that while our game developers are aware of the issues with Intel compatibility, there is a limit to what code they can implement or lock-out without rekludging the engine. As the game moves forward, it's been indicated that Television and his graphics crew will do their best to keep from breaking existing compatibility.

    In theory then, play on Intel Integrated graphics probably should not get any-worse when all of the changes for Going Rogue are finally implemented.

    Unfortunately, I highly doubt support is going to improve. Wrangling decent performance / image quality out of Intel's Graphics Accelerators requires either using OpenGL code that makes DirectX look pretty, or writing to the DirectX API.

I'm not particularly looking for help, since there's not much I can do in terms of upgrading graphics, but I wanted to post in case the developers were not aware of these issues with the chipset. I didn't see any topics in the feedback or bug sections where this seems appropriate however.
    As to your Intel chipset... um... well... You might want to think about getting a new laptop that doesn't use Intel Integrated graphics: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219502

    actually some things were changed on the low end.

    Some of the old non-standard proprietary code was junked and re-written to, as I understand it, a stricter OpenGL specification adherence. Theoretically this should have improved and standarized image quality across all OpenGL adhearent API sets (1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.0, 2.0 ES, and 3.0), but instead wound up appearently caused issues on certain vendors drivers: e.g. Intel, e.g. Fglrx / Catalyst drivers of a certain age, e.g. Nvidia drivers of a certain age.

    Hence the number of Intel users suddenly locked out of the game and finding shader quality wasn't an option, and the known issue with Geforce 4 crashes.
    Quote:
    Also, if you ARE using Intel Integrated graphics, you may, or may not, be S.O.L. when it comes to getting the exact same graphics settings as before. The existing graphics engine contained several hacks, work-arounds, kludges, and in some cases just plain bad coding to achieve some of the visual effects under OpenGL 1.3-1.5 Rendering paths.

    The Ultra Mode upgrade fixed several of the outstanding code quality issues. Unfortunately, just because the graphics code itself might now be API Adherent... does not necessarily mean that the drivers themselves are API Adherent.

    It is very possible, although unconfirmed, that CoH's engine was making use of non-specification OpenGL API calls to achieve some of the graphical effects. Converting these graphical effects into "standardized" OpenGL API calls may encounter problems when a vendor has implemented the non-specification call for performance or hardware reasons. E.G. : Nvidia, UltraShadow, and GeforceFX.

    From the information that has been given to the players, it seems that the guys working on the engine think they can reduplicate existing effects on the cleaned-up code. They might not be able to. As demonstrated... quite painfully for many players... in the 5/04 patch, kludging the engine means... kludging the engine.
    What you are wanting is for the developers to REBREAK the graphics engine.

    You are going to be better off contacting Intel and getting them to FIX the OpenGL support for your graphics driver: http://www.intel.com/support/feedback.htm

    Quote:
    1. right click on CoH shortcut
    2. click on properties
    3.click on shortcut tab at top
    4. go to target window "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
    5. after the last " press space once
    6. enter the following code exactly -useTexEnvCombine
    7. click on apply then ok
    8. right click on CoH then click run as admin.
    This forces the game to use the same rendering path as Intel Integrated graphics.

    Which may... or may not work.

    FYI, that's griefing, and it's against T.O.S.

    Anyways, I agree with Smash Zone about not doing master run's with players you haven't ever teamed with before. Some of the Master Runs, like Dr. Kahn's and ITF, are fairly trivial for P.U.G.'s to pull off. Others, like Statesman's, Lord Recluses's, Barracuda's, or Lady Grey's need a little bit more pre-expected team-work.

    Now, I won't argue that certain players will take the Master Run too far. For every player that will laugh it off and finish the TF out, there's one that will insist on starting the whole thing over again. Most of the people I run with refer to the Master runs as a "Master of Attempt" or "Attempting a Master," basically focusing on the fact that even with the best groups of players, things can still go wrong.

    My laptop overheats and completely shuts off within a few minutes of playing CoH. I say it overheats because the keypad gets progressively hotter and the heat coming off the laptop can be felt 2 feet away on my face. Eventually just before it shuts off the entire laptop is scorching hot.

    I've taken, as far as me and my friends are concerned, EVERY measure to make the game playable. We've reformatted the computer and reset everything to factory defaults, reinstalled CoH from the installation disc, run the program in Safe Mode, and even mailed the laptop to HP to check for hardware issues. HP says the hardware is working properly.

    I'm currently using a dual fan 2500-rpm cooler, and the laptop is always in a 70 degree temperature controlled room.

    Are we missing something?
    Yes. This:

    NVidia GeForce GT 130M

    Nvidia has THERMAL PROBLEMS. Their video cards RUN HOT. Seriously, did you miss the entire BumpGate scandal Nvida's going through? Did you miss the lawsuits going against Nvidia because they outright lied to computer manufacturers about how hot their chips run? Did you miss the reports of exploding computers? Did you miss the product recalls for multiple laptops? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...c01300427_dv20

    Okay, granted, I don't see your particular laptop model in the list of HP laptops with Nivida that are known to explode. Also, it should not be running hot enough to shut your computer off. Given the state of Nvidia's drivers, it's entirely possible that the driver you are using is one of the more recent ones that had botched thermal controls: http://technorati.com/technology/it/...ting-problems/

    So, we need to know what driver you have installed: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219502

    I'm no longer seeing the bubbles and dots in other zones either, so if you are looking to run both Anti Aliasing and Ambient Occlusion on Windows with ATi RadeonHD, you'll want to be running Catalyst 10.6.

  15. It's not been uncommon for missions to point to AE before, as they would be pointing to a door or location that was there before the AE building was placed.

    Just /bug the mission and contact and hopefully the mish door will be set to a proper coordinate.
  16. 5th, I'm going to level with you. I haven't heard of anybody else having this problem, and I don't see anything popping on the ATi bug-tracking system's in response to this issue. Given that nobody else seems to have run into this problem, it just sounds like it this was a driver-corruption issue limited to your machine's configuration.

    Why? Couldn't tell you that. Driver corruption issues tend to cause some of the more annoying headaches for tech support, hence the importance of being able to duplicate / replicate the problem.

    Now, if you honestly KNOW people who are able to replicate this error, or if you are able to replicate it yourself, you need to go get some bug reports listed:

  19. Somebody also ran benchmarks way back when the AGEIA card was launched. The card did indeed improve CoH's performance... by about the same amount as going from a Single Socket system to a Dual Socket System.

    So... in today's world of Dual-Cores and Quad-Cores, the performance advantage that the AGEIA card offered back on AMD AthlonXp and Intel Pentium4 has long been done away with.

    .... no.

    no. it isn't.

    It's. awful. It is, in and of itself, a malware package.

    * * *

    Okay, the status of whose good in the anti-virus world can change at the drop of a hat, and changes depending on what OS you are using. If you are on a Windows System, you will get infected no matter who you use. It's only a question of time.

    *Nix type systems are harder to crack, and as the recent UnrealIRC package trojan showed, successful attempts basically require you to allow a 3rd party non-repository vetted piece of software have root access to your machine.

    Keeping in mind then that no AntiVirus is going to give you 100% protection, the best on-access anti-virus's for the Windows platform are:

    Avast: http://www.avast.com/
    BitDefender: http://www.bitdefender.com/
    Nod32: http://www.eset.com/

    Now, a lot of people swear by AVG, and yes, AVG does make a good anti-malware product. One of the things you have to watch for with AVG though is that as of version 9, they tend to report a lot of false positives, and they also use an on-access link scanner. Basically, what AVG can do is scan all of the links on a browser page and make sure you can't click on a link that leads to a malicious software site... it's a neat trick, but can send your Internet connection speed into the toilet. AVG's performance / memory size has skyrockted over previous releases, and I'm not convinced that the free version is "worth" the extra processing power compared to it's rivals.

    If you couple an Anti-Virus with tools such as SpyBot Search and Destroy, and avoid Microsoft software where-ever possible: don't use Internet Explorer, don't use Microsoft Outlook, don't use Microsoft Office, don't use Hotmail, and so on; you can pretty much avoid many of the problems that plague the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

    Now, the worst of the security packages doesn't change as often as the best. You can pretty much bet that any compilation of the "lowest hit rate for malware" packages will include Symnatec's Norton, McAfee, and Kaspersky somewhere in the bottom 5. I've gone into why these guys tend to be dead last before.

    * * *

    Now, the best anti-malware package... isn't really an anti-malware package.

    It's ClamAV: http://www.clamwin.com/ :: http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/

    Now, what you need to know about ClamAV is that it's Windows version is not an on-access protection anti-virus. You will actually have to run ClamAV and scan files manually in order to see whether or not they have a virus. However, ClamAV has been used in the *nix realm for years and boasts an average hit-rate for malicious software that is way better than it's enterprise rivals.

    Basically, the Windows version of Clam won't actively protect you from getting a virus, but it will be able to clean that virus up.

    And yes, an on-access real-time scanner is expected to be added to the ClamWin client, but I couldn't tell you when.
