I went with Assault. My dom is perma so it made sense. With all of the tools of Mind/, I should have more than enough control already for Control, though I may explore it later. Got no interest in Support--doesn't seem as useful for our AT.

Pre-ED my Dark/Dark Defender was flooring -to hit on mobs and I always had multiple Dark Fluffies out thanks to six slotted Hasten. While I do indeed miss the days of seeing fire tanks herd the entire map and dive into a dumpster to burn everything and watching blasters nova all over...I definitely like the modern era a lot more--things are a lot more evened out nowadays.

Best idea that I've heard in a long while. This needs to be stickied!

I've always hated this, If you're not 50 you can't comment stupidity. There's plenty of l50's who play their char badly, and just got PLed by their SG, and there's plenty of VERY good players who haven't had the time to actually make it to 50, or conversely are maybe leveling slowly to actually enjoy the content.
Just because my Main char is only l33, does not mean that I have no idea how Mesmerize works, or no feel for wether or not drain psyche is a valid replacement for Stamina.
And certainly, since most of what Bradd has done has been MATH and Calculus.. I really don't see how not being l50 makes any difference what so ever.

Yeah, you've got to just love the "If you're not a level 50 then your opinions and experiences mean nothing" rubbish. More elitist wankery at its best. I agree with ShrikeX on one point--this thread needs to die already. It started out as a splendid discussion with strong insight and opinions, now it's degenerated into the usual verbal fracas, with lines and ideas drawn (good and bad and ubsurd) like guns on the battlefield, with madmen (and women) pulling the triggers like the good soldiers that we are.
So, do doms suck like people say they do? No. But then again, they do need love. What kind of love? That's even a better question, made more complicated by the natural human tendency for people never to completely gather a simple consensus (or something close to it), for people who haven't a clue how to say what they mean clearly, and by those who love a good old fashioned flame war. There are other complications, but there's not enough time to explain, and I don't rightfully care anymore (okay, that last part's a joke).
What do doms need? Less end intensive secondaries. A tad bit more damage in ranged attacks (how much...haven't a clue, and I'm not self-styled mathematician). And yes, as I posted it before (somewhere...I don't remember), 25-30% containment--all we have to defend ourselves with is our potent active defense...with minimal debuffs. Domination is fine, and quite fantastic now, with Posi's news of mez protection.

I need a beer...off to the pub then. I'm on the other side of the world on holiday...and I missed the double XP weekend. 'shrug' -

Having a level 50 is not a sufficient condition to be an expert in the game, but I think it is a necessary condition -- and a fairly minimal one at that.

I almost spit out my coffee when I read this. That quote has got to be...well, I'm not going to even go there. Nice opinion, though. Too bad it's wrong. -
Triangles ARE part of the problem.

On large teams, I'm the difference maker. My problems are in the solo game, occasionally. Large teams are easy. I practically do the same thing every time opening up.
Mind/Psi? Easiest job in the world. Mass Hypno, Terrify. Who cares about aggro when they're scared, debuffed, and if they're not 2 of those, they're bloody sleeping. The team lets loose with little fear of getting hit back. Then I jump into the chaos, spamming the hell out of Psy Shockwave (my favorite power EVER...even more than Fulcrum Shift...yeah, I said it!), and dealing with bosses (locking them up with ST controls)and billy badass minions and leuts with delusions of grandeur (yeah, Sappers, Nullifiers--I'm talking to you!). By the time this is all done, the rest of your large team pats themselves on the back for SMASHING, blasting, and healing...if it goes to hell, pop Mass Confusion and run for your life, Charlie Brown. When the dust settles, no one realizes that you, the Dominator, made life a whole lot easier.
It's a thankless job...dominating, and that's where the big problem is. No flashiness. No mindboggling, senses-shattering damage (save for the 90 seconds of joygasmic pleasure that is Domination), no pretty green numbers floating over our heads, AoE controls that are a waste of time (situationally).
So, to answer the OP's question: Do doms suck like people say they do? My answer...no. Could there be improvements? Hell yeah!
My wishlist for my Mind/Psi (haven't played any other dominators, so I'll talk about something I know about after 43 levels of toiling about)? 1: Fix Mental Blast, I don't care how, but fix it! 2: Fix the AoE controls...that's what sucks (I don't want City of Statues, mind you, but decrease the recharge times!!!). 3: Just a tad bit more damage. Nothing major, but something a little more. 4: Mez protection...we can mez, but we can't protect ourselves against it? Come on...20% mez resistance or something lower.
P.S.: Oh, as a Mind/Psi, please please please NERF the damned Carnies!!! -
I would like to see multiple founders or something like a charter member that could serve in leiu of the founder, assigning ranks and promoting demoting members. The charter members would have founder abilities, much like the charter members of the Avengers in Marvel Comics--Iron Man, Thor, The Wasp, Antman, and the Hulk--but they couldn't supercede the actual founder's permissions in any way.

I for one love that the bosses are tougher...besides, if I as a defender can take one on (+2, not +3), so can anyone else. That's what inspirations are for. They're bosses! They're supposed to be tough to beat.
Off topic...now, if they could just tell us how to trigger the octopus...
