States has been blessing us with their shenanigans for quite a while, CR.

I think I'll be back in here again later today with help on a model sheet for a fully robotic armored type character. So NOT what I do. I specifically took on the challenge to get out of my comfort zone and all, but will need people to bounce this sucker off of =)

Quote:I think Caemgen pointed out where the misunderstanding was, and why your truncated quote didn't show that. Your name was in there, but the following words weren't directed at you.You state my name and then comment - how is this misunderstood? I truncated the quote because this is my response about what you stated directed at me - hence it was superflous and tldr to add the rest.
If you meant something else, my apologies. I can relate to rebufing misinformation and absurd statements - nothing in my commentary was either. To imply my argument that art education should be considered in order to help provide a proper critique as absurd...is in my opinion insulting to not just myself, but to pretty much every art major out there.
As far as the art majors, I value critiques not only from my professors, classmates and others in the field, but those who have taken the time to learn more about art as well. They might not hold a full degree, but they actually enrolled in art classes and learned the process and made actual efforts at better understanding. -
Quote:Eeeeeeeh, being that far makes more of a case NOT to start over, actually. Even moreso on a digital file. Triple so for your editor scenario. Also the reason why i'd say redo it at this stage is you've gone beyond where people can generally make corrections without destroy most of the rest of the work so it's better to just start over than waste the time in fighting with what you already have.
Illustrators have INSANE deadlines. Anyone worth their salt has a thousand tricks up their sleeve to fix quickly and efficiently. My favorite watercolor book included an anecdote where the artist finished a piece for a magazine due for delivery the next day... only to drop her brush and make a HUGE blob right in the middle. After the requisite panic, she worked it into her piece, and you'd never know in the finish.
For any piece, I have so many scraps and stages. Even with 100% traditional work, I can go back and then forward again via tracing and transferring my own work. Its far, FAR less work to preserve the good parts with a transfer than to scrap it all. -
Looking back at the pose multiple times now, I think the lack of value as of yet on the hands is really what makes it look awkward. The lower hand is super-duper flat, almost painfully so. But it hasn't had any volume applied to it at this stage, so I think its making a weirdness that may not be there.

Er... he started the thread with the intent of a place to provide critique, and BW participated. Obviously BW doesn't completely agree, but the whole point of the thread is to get that kind of feedback, not posting pictures just to sit back and say "Nice!" We all have our display threads.

Swanzy is scary...
I can't wait to see who else snaps up that Secret Invasion variant issue! I've wanted to do some work for charity for a long time, and am very happy that my first foray is to benefit the Inkwell Awards.
I want to see lots of suggestions for Wassy's Weekly Wednesday Warm-Ups! -

Sorry, couldn't resist. -

For me, the biggest negative thing sticking out about the Mel piece is the hand (raised one). I know its flat due to lack of value variation yet, but the structure also isn't looking right, especially around the knuckles.
For nit-picky stuff, her nose is looking a bit squished and the face isn't as... hmmm... lively as one would picture for Massacre Melanie. Somewhat lacking in expression. -
I'm doing light from an unseen doorway, but kind of put the light area on the floor as more of a placeholder because I see the light as being more from color in the final. It didn't look 100% to me either, but I wanted to mess with that more in PS where I can shove it around a bit as I can't quite settle on the angle yet.
I made the desk and books on the large side because that felt a little more magical to me. If its reading wrong though, that's something to think about...
Thanks for pointing out the tangent! I hate those bastards. -
I also doubt the stickiness, but I'll see about getting this current WiP onto my dA page. Like I said... I can't direct-link it, but feel free to put the crit here so we can get the ball rolling ^.^
I'll edit the post when the WiP is up.
EDIT: up in my dA gallery, under the title of "Oops" -
Quote:Mmmm... you should go into politics.*sigh* Ok, enough of this. Really. I just want to wipe the slate clean...
Bayani, I am sorry. I am sorry for anything I may have said or did that offended you, upset you or inconvienenced you. I really have nothing against you and I wish you nothing but personal happiness and joy.
And thus I declare a unilateral ceasefire and whatever this is ended.
Not to be insulting or anything, you know. -
I thrive on for-real critiques. My current WiP can't be posted directly here though, if you know what I mean! But anything on my dA gallery is open for critique.
Do you have a link to a portfolio or arts? I'd be interested in checking it out. -
Pfft, nudes aren't bad. I was nervous as heck, and my first model was an older man. But after like 5 minutes, I was so intent on what the professor was saying about how the anatomy was at work, I didn't even notice.
Figure drawing is one of my favorite things to do. I have an open invitation to crash the figure drawing classes any time I want (I finished up all my figure requirements). -
Quote:I can't even SEE a straight line! Don't let a silly thing like that stop you... he makes it look effortless while I can't even draw a straight line!
I don't have much new to add, but to reiterate PRACTICE is huge. The more you hammer a way at it, the better you'll get. I've also found observational drawing (human and still life) to be extremely beneficial.
If you want more hands-on instruction, always poke around local museums or community colleges (don't know what the European equivalent of a community college is, though) for classes you can take. There's often active art communities tucked away where you'd least expect them. You can read all you want, but its VERY helpful to get direction as you're working and be able to ask questions as they come up. -
I'll always let Swanzy play with my boobies.

Quote:Wow. People are logically pointing out why you're over-priced for your target market, but since they're not giving you money, its flaming?!Alright, pretty clear my work isn't appreciated. I have posted a process piece before, will do one which is more in depth. My prices are based on what I made when I left school, I am not a self taught artist. Since none of you are willing to talk about commissioning me, this is all flames. Thank you all nonetheless for your suggestions.
I've been doing commissions for about 3-4 years, and I'm not self-taught either (and neither is Swanzy, by-the-by). Your prices are well above the market you're working towards/in. I want to freelance illustrate full time, but I realistically know it would be a good idea to keep a part-time job for steady income. Heck, that's why almost all my professors WERE professors! They were gallery painters, designers, freelancers, book illustrators.... but because of what you get paid for that work, they needed to supplement their income. -
I'm gonna play with it using overlays myself. I'd like to see what Eddy can do with it too with artistic stuffs.

Quote:Boobies!
I'm always happy to work on your lines wassy, just let me know when you have an Idea for a collaboration. I'll try and think of idea's aswell.
ACTUALLY, I'm going to try my own experiments on it as well, but throw me a note if you have spare time to play with
As the Official Frost Magus Artist, I don't allow just anyone to put their artistic stamp on her, as I'm homicidally jealous... but I make exceptions for you ^.^ -
Naw, I don't have the time to argue about it anymore
-
I usually throw my comments on dA, but I love watching you progress in leaps and bounds, Swanzy.
We have to collab again sometime (I know we keep saying it, but for reals)!! -
YES, BUT DO YOU HAVE IT IN FUSCHIA?
This month's theme is going to be rather tongue-in-cheek. Its August, college is starting back up in just a few weeks. Icon's had their fair share of interns. Lets just say... they REALLY need to get back in class!
For this month, I want you to picture the outcome of Icon's (and the Facemaker) getting interns that weren't quite up to snuff. Costumes fixed incorrectly, mixed up orders, those tricky decimal points getting put in the wrong place on those sizes... whatever your crazy brains can come up with.
You CAN use your own heroes/villains, but that might not be the best idea. The signature heroes/villains are much more recognizable, so mix-ups would be easier to read straight away.
As always, feel free to ask for any clarification.
THE RULES
1. Keep It Clean- All entries must be direct-linkable on the boards. If its worse than PG-13, you will be disqualified.
2. Use City of Heroes/Villains Elements- Your entry must somehow relate to City of Heroes/Villains either through character, setting, or some other means
3. Visual Fan Art Only- We're not taking writing, music, or interpretive dance submissions
DEADLINES
All entries must be posted to this thread or the dA group by MIDNIGHT US EASTERN TIME, SATURDAY AUGUST 28TH. -
Lot of jockeying this month! Frost was kind enough to put together graphs again...
Our winner is CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. While he and Johnnykat were tied in points, CR had more 1st place votes, making him the winner.
Bubbawheat remains eliminated as he did not win the overall vote.
Sadly, we must also say goodbye to U-Naught and Frost =(
Hopefully I can convince Frost to keep making the graphs for us! -
Mmmm... shame that Rogue Frost can't be represented in such a way in-game. The couple fur-lined costume pieces are just... blegh.
I do like how my version turned out, though. I have to draw at least one scene with her shoes visible. I imagine them to be spiked heels with a tiny bell at the buckle of each ankle strap.
