  1. Then those of you trying to take this to another level better be ready to step before a ethics review board to state your case. Otherwise, its your word against again...a ""internationally-recognized scholar".

    Good luck with that!
  2. [ QUOTE ]
Actually most institutions take ethics very seriously and our government takes research on human subjects even more serious (although they were the worst violators in the past)

And you dont think anyone at Loyola reviewed his work prior to it being published?

    Twixt PvP'd. People cried.

But submitting videogame PvP as a formal research project? That's one of the dumbest things I heard in my life. Twixt may be a G, but he's about to lose his job.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I seriously doubt anyone is about to lose their job....

    lol......

I think more than anything, people are madadadadadad at getting ganked by a 55 year old professor while PvPing.

    HAHAHAHAHA!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Or all those formally responding never actually got ganked by Twixt. You know, whichever is actually true.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Maybe, but then if that's the case, why do you care what this guy does with his research? It's not like the results impact your life in some way.....

There's plenty of ways to get your 15 minutes of fame rather than trying to make a statement by reporting some random professor for sketchy experimental methods.

All the meanwhile....he's probably laughing while raking in 6 figures a year. Something I doubt the majority of people here do. Its amazing to me what random people find is their business to investigate.

The guy is a "internationally-recognized scholar of digital media and play" yet you guys think you're going to get him fired over this?

    Hilarious....

Step 1: Make a character. Hot Random on the costume, or make a girl with ginormous breasts in a pink bikini and high heels. Pick your heal power, it will be easier to find teams. If you can speed boost, it will be even be easier to find teams, so make that your primary goal. Defender or Troller. It won't make a difference for you. As for the troller primary or defender secondary, pick whatever. No one will even care anyway. Pick something that is pretty if possible.
Step 2: Go to Atlas Park. This is important, so pay attention. There are other zones, but they are without other heroes, so they are kinda scary. Stay in Atlas where there are lots of heroes to protect you.
Step 3: Spam AT lfAE team or lf AEfarm until you get on a team. This is the hardest part at low levels, but once you get SB, you are golden.
Step 4: Don't speak much until you get some levels. Some team members may quit if they see you are level 2 or 3, but if you don't draw attention to yourself, you will appear to be level 50 when inside the mish and people may not check. It is really important that people don't figure out you are clueless
Step 5: Don't get travel powers. You never have to leave Atlas Park, so it would be a waste. In fact, they really need to put the trainer in the AE building so you don't have to waste time getting to Ms. Liberty. Get Jump Kick though as it will open up SJ if you want it at level 50, but it really not going to do anything unless you want to jump really high. As a kin, you can get a jumping power too, so that way you could even get two jumping powers. That's twice as much jump. You could consider getting leadership pools, but since you probably wont be near the team much, it really won't help and those just make weird symbols float around you, and then you could interfere with the look of your random costume you set up from step1.
Step 6. Get speed boost as soon as possible. Use it on the guy or gal with the star often. Ignore the other team members after the beginning of the mish unless they are a stone tanker. The rest of the team may ask for SB. This can get to be really irritating and selfish of the other heroes. That's OK, some of them are just little kids, and you know how kids can be. SB a few members here and there when they ask, but don't do the whole team. It does not last long anyway, so then you would have to speed boost often with repetitive motions. You need to worry about carpal tunnel, and its long term effects on your quality of life, so if people give you a hard time, remember, you need to take care of yourself first. Also, try not to use your attacks much. They will just get you in trouble and tick off the maniacs in the mission.
Step 7: When you get fulcrum shift, try not to use it too much. It is a neat looking power, but then you have to stand close to the granite tanker and he is big and ugly. Ugly people suck.
Step 8: As you obtain higher levels, sb any granite tankers you see and tell them to friend you. You do not need to add em as friends on facebook, but in the game you can actually friend people. It is cool. If they don't answer you, they are big and mean and may have ignored you for spamming way back 4 hours ago when you were level 1. If they friend you, you will always get invites when you log on.
Step 9: Go AFK and get some dinner. You are probably hungry and have been on line now for 8 or 9 hours. Eat something really healthy like Pizza or french fries or both. Remember earlier how I said to take care of yourself. And do your laundry. No reason not to be hygenic after all. The team really does not have a need for you, but knowing a kin is on the team will make them fight more confidentally. Don't work too hard to make dinner and do chores. You need to maintain your gamer's body after all. A little extra fat will cushion your wrists and may even protect the the nerve compression from carpal tunnel syndrome.
Step 10. Ding, you hit 50. Awesome. You deserve it totally. Immediately quit the team, even mid mission and log this character off. You have no idea how to use the character anyway and there is no point in learning now. Just make an empath, and start spamming healer lf AE farm. You will have another 50 in a couple of days. That's two 50s. Totally Awesome.

So that is it. I see a lot of fancy guides where people crunch the numbers and such and that is awesome, but I am more of a tactics kind of guy. I am sure some folks will have feedback and that is just super duper, but it is hard to make a more accurate guide than this. If people want to make addendums, that would be greatly appreciated, but it's really hard to make a more precise and well thought out guide than this (Except that damn archery one, that one is the shizznit). Also, I really did not want to provide the purpled out IO build at this time, because those damn PvP'ers will just copy the build on my Kin/Psi Defender and then Pwnz everyone in Recluse's Victory. PvPer's attack me when i screw up and wonder into recluse's victory and they are big meanies. Builds are also overrated. Real heroes don't spend all their influence on purples and IO recipes. They just collect it to be really really rich and sometimes hold random costume contests. You could also buy all the inanimate carbon rods from WW and drive the cost up to amazingly inflated prices that make no sense if you wanted. That would be neato and people love the challenge of building simple IOs for like 500K. That reallly seems to enhance the gaming experience.

I forgot to mention, you should start on Freedom first as it will be easiest to find a farm, but no worries if you go to another server. They all do it, just might slow you down to 12 or 14 hours, and that would suck, because you need to finish up in time for late night Cinemax and all there artsy shows.

Anyway, follow these 10 simple steps, and you will be well on your way to glory and you will totally feel like a super hero. A super duper hero in fact.

Some may say, Night Sable, this really can't work. Well, there are always naysayers. Folks say "AE ruined the game" and things like "farming is lame" and so on. But if you follow these 10 steps, you could have all sorts of kins from fire/kins to ice/kins to kin/rads to kin/archery. The combinations are practically limitless. Perhaps a number cruncher can do the math.

Good luck, and I hope to see you all get to 50, and then I can join up with you on some shadow shard tfs. That would be just awesome as I am sure you will totally know what you are doing by that point.

I love you all except those PvP meanies that kill me. Stupid dummyheads.

    Love,

    Night Sable

P.S. How much you want to bet someone follows the guide to 50?

    This post is too funny.
I have a level 34 kin/nrg defender on pinnacle I like a lot. She's hot and has big boobs. Unfortunately It's taken me 3 years to get her to level 34. Mainly because I find playing kins very tiring. I can only do 5-8 mishes before I'm drained. I happen to be the type of player that makes absolutely SURE no one on the team EVER says, "can I have SB please?". I SB/ID everyone and then I re-SB/ID everyone before the first SB even runs out. Unless they say, "No SB for me", then I skip them. But I don't ask, I just do it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wow...no wonder it's taken you 3 years to get to 34.

You're not playing a kin....you're being everyones buff-bot. Now go get me a beer and re-apply SB when you get back.

    (address removed)

    Dear Sir;

I would like to report what appears to be a serious violation of the APA Code of Ethics by Professor David Myers.

    According to this article:

    http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2...fessor_be.html

Professor Myers engaged in what is at best dubious activities in a multiplayer online game, ostensibly for the purpose of sociological/psychological research. However, according to the APA Code of Ethics--

    3.10 Informed Consent
    (a) When psychologists conduct research or provide assessment, therapy, counseling, or consulting services in person or via electronic transmission or other forms of communication, they obtain the informed consent of the individual or individuals using language that is reasonably understandable to that person or persons except when conducting such activities without consent is mandated by law or governmental regulation or as otherwise provided in this Ethics Code. (See also Standards 8.02, Informed Consent to Research; 9.03, Informed Consent in Assessments; and 10.01, Informed Consent to Therapy.)

He must first have obtained informed consent from the players of that game. He did not do so. In point of fact, none of these players were aware he was conducting this research until the announcement of his book publication was made in this newspaper.

There is no indication that he conducted this research with the consent of the owners and operators of the game, which is another violation of ethics. The owners and operators of this game have been informed of this breech of ethics, which may violate their EULA (End Users Licensing Agreement).

As you can see from the context of the article, he deliberately enraged the other players, possibly causing them substantive harm. He did not offer therapeutic counseling to these players, as also mandated by the APA Code of Ethics.

Now that they are aware of this, it is possible they may consider Professor Myers and Loyola University legally liable for that harm.

    Thank you for your attention

    Mercedes Lackey

    Ms. Lackey,

Dr. Miron, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, forwarded your email dated today to me because I am Chair of Loyola’s IRB. Thank you for your inquiry about yesterday’s article in the Times Picayune regarding David Myer’s research into online gaming.

I initiated an internal review of this matter that is in the information-gathering stage. At this point we cannot comment on an active investigation. Be assured that we take the matter seriously and will seek to achieve a resolution that complies with University policy and professional research ethics as well as state and federal human subjects protection regulations.

Not directed at anyone in particular, but, did anyone ever consider that player greed may in fact be why prices have jumped ? If greed is the root of most evils, then farming MUST be from the Debil.....the Debil I say. So burn the witch, burn burn burn !!!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I would say greed is a part, but its not the overwhelming factor. Its more high demand vs low supply that makes the prices go up.

The reason purple IOs have increased so dramatically in price in the market since Issue 14 launched is because most farmers have moved to AE.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Please explain, I wasn't here to see it happen and I'm not seeing the correlation.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Purples dont drop in AE unless you're running a "Dev Choice" arc and nobody that I'm aware of farm those missions.

Since AE, most of the farmers have moved from PI to Atlas, therefore there's far less purples on the market now than there was prior the AE....which in turn has cuased the prices of purples to skyrocket.

When I purped my Fire/Kin, I guess the total cost was around 2B. If I were to sell everything on him right now, I would guess its worth between 4-5B.

I love farming....whether it be PLing an alt, or farming for merits, tickets, influence, or purple/PVP IOs.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If you consider it, how else can one get PVP/Purple IO's? They are insanely expensive as it is, so either you have to farm for the influence to get it, or farm for the drops themselves.

In fact many people are min/maxers and want to Purple out their Toon. Or even IO out their toons. Either way I don't believe through normal play by the time you have hit 50 you'd have accumulated enough Inf (through play, selling drops, etc) to purple out a toon entirely.

I've only been back for a little while though so perhaps there are tricks I don't know for getting a lot of influence relatively fast. But that seems to me like it'd be 'farming' for something.

More on this later, I must leave work!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Without farmers like myself, the market for PVP and purple IOs would be non-existant or the prices would be so high not many people would even bother.

Those people who hate farmers and like to "pimp" out their toons have players like us to thank for there being those types of IOs available on the market.

I cant begin to tell you how many times I've posted an IO when there have been 0 for sale. It happens all the time.

Eh..."In before the lock" I think...

Its pretty safe to assume this thread has been reported to a mod, so there's reason to believe it will be locked at some point.

Generally, threads like this just lead to a bunch of farmers vs anti-farmers flame wars.
  17. And Lastly, if you have a second account you can re-activate, do it asap!

My personal rule of thumb....if you're on a 50 and helping the farm, then you can doorsit a lowbie all you want. I think you'll find a lot of farmers who allow the same thing.

They just dont want to PL you w/o you helping....and being a 38 on a 53 boss farm isnt going to help much.

Ack....dude, this isnt how you get PLed. lol....

Nobody, even myself (and I farm a lot with various teams), would consider forming a group just to PL you to 50. Sure, the tickets and influence might be great for all the 50s but you're really going about this the wrong way.

There's SO many farms running in Atlas, its just far better to hang around in the MA building until one is advertised, then send a tell to the "farmer" asking if you can join.

This will never work, but I give you credit for having the stones to put it out there.

But i'll say this, your words were noted and I will remember this!

    Ty for being you ;-)

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Well thanks

I havent been playing near as long as most of the crowd around here, but its become pretty clear there's a group of players that really hate farmers and PLing. Those people, I generally ignore when they start to hate on farming.

Hell I went into PI last night and ran my demon farm. To me, it IS boring running the same content over and over and over and the grind from 1-50 just gets tiring after awhile. I find it much more fun to level a toon to 50, then go back and work on all the things I missed.

If I'm outcasted because of that, then so be it. But even with all the farm haters here, I can always find a farm in Atlas to join if I'm patient enough to wait for a spot to open up on one. I strongly suggest the same to you.

When I'm not able to find a farm, I'll join a TF and work toward an accolade that I'll eventually need...even if I dont get XP during the TF.

So there's plenty of options out there other than just grinding through contact after contact. Just dont let the anti-farmers get under your skin. Brush them off, and keep doing what you enjoy doing.

Just dont expect 7 other 50s to do it for you.
  19. Ack....dude, this isnt how you get PLed. lol....
