Quote:Because as "large" as our playbase is, its twiddle sticks compared to the potential playerbase for western Tolkien middle eastern fantasy console mmos.I simply find it hard to believe that there is a such a large player base available and no one is out trying to create a game that caters to them.
When it comes to super hero mmos theres nothing to...aspire to. Both the current super hero mmos can only be described as....."alive" (although DCOU is getting player housing soon)
'
any potential publisher or developer looking at making a new super hero mmo is just going to look at those two flops and assume that there isn't any money in it -
Quote:But what exactly is the end goal hereI'm just going to add that it irks me a little that their October 2nd press release ("exhausted all efforts") was so successful in quieting a lot of people and hopes around here.
I really felt like that was the time to shout right back louder than we had before.
What does that mean? Just simply continuing as much publicity as we could muster. Oh, believe me, there were many people still trying, but a large amount of our playerbase was simply gone and our turnouts seemed to be far smaller than previously. Believe me, that is all understandable... we were here for fun and to play a game... not to fight an impossible fight against a billion-dollar corporation via the press, media and any publicity stunts we could create. I just would like to see NCSoft's reactions to further negative press and public out-crying after their statement that that was that and all attempts had been exhausted.
Of course, people are still trying to do these very things and failure never happens until all efforts cease. So, you never know. And if you ever feel like helping out, every little bit counts.
embarrass NCsoft until they hire everyone back?
I understand the concern to show NCsoft they can't treat companies and consumers like this but...I severely doubt they care. -

For me, at least, a perfect super hero MMO would include
a pleasing aesthetic. nothing too cartoony, but not realistic enough to dip into the uncanny valley. Probably something like CoH with a slight bump up (but with a better engine running it, so it runs better)
customization. customization. customization. From costumes, to logos, to bases, to powers. Make no two characters alike. Make no two bases alike. Customization was this game's strongsuit, so why not take it up to 11. Your character should feel like your character.
and last but no least, what to do with heroes and villains. Honestly, I feel like making separate zones for each was the most logical choice. Sure it wasn't the best, but it was logical. Heroes get a city to save people in and villains get an area where they can commit crimes without being jumped by 40 hero players.
Trust me, DCUO did the whole "shared zone" thing and it was absolute hell. I was so worried that the guy in blue tights in front of me was a hero, or a colorful villain I didn't interact with ANYONE.
If I had to suggest something different, I would have the two areas still exist, but let both heroes and villains pass freely. Heroes could save people in "Hero City" or whatever, and proactively fight crime in "Villain City", Villains could gain power in "Villain City" and then commit crimes in "Hero City"
it's a thought -
Quote:True. With all the improvements the devs added to the system, it's sometimes easy to forget that City of Heroes is older than World of Warcraft. If only by a few months. And that is the thing to remember. COH took time to evolve and become the great game that it is today. Champions now is better than it was when I first played it-- it may get better still. And the same goes for DC Online.
But, you know, I don't think that applies to MMO's anymore. No longer to MMOs get better with age. With everyone and their mom pumping out MMOs every year to try and get a slice of the pie, not a single new MMO has any...staying power. No publisher is going to accept the "but it will get better eventually" business model. They want money, and they want it quickly. And if an MMO doesn't provide what they think it should it gets the F2P stamp, then it gets skeleton crews as the good devs are moved to another MMO.
And with that, I don't think Champions Online is going to get any "better". Sure, new costumes might be released once a year. They might get some new shiny (but buggy) missions, or new powers. But the game itself is never going to evolve or improve the way older games like CoH or WoW did. -
Quote:Well. once you play the first mission chain for the 50th time (since there's only one, and no DFB to use to skip to the more interesting stuff) you dont need to read the text.Speed demons are speed demons. They probably don't even read whatever briefing that even exists. Personally? I like to make sure I'm informed of everything going on and approach with a plan (if one's needed). One reason I've never liked speed runs in CoH.
I've made so many characters I have every mission, every map, every bug of Kodiaks arc memorized, and one a good soloable toon I can do it in the mentioned ~20 minutes. Give or take some time when I get depressingly bored of it.
Of course, thats with a soloable toon. Others take longer. Anything ranged thats not focused on high burst damage is a pain. Buffers are a pain. Surprisingly the Superstrength AT is sort of a pain since it's better powers come later. *shrugs* -
Can the graphics be......turned down?
The game looks (as in, gameplay/immersion/setting) amazing, but if it's going to take the CSI's super computer to run it (like it looks like its going to), I may as well not even try.
Like, I don't need to see every single turret on a space ship to care about the game, nor do I need to see the freckles on the freckles on the characters *** either. -
Quote:It's not that noticeable in the beginning city, and I didn't have much trouble with it in the Desert, they still respawned quickly, but the mobs were spread out enough to hinder it hurting you.Questions:
Is the zone respawn rate still so outlandishly fast that a ranged-based character's most common cause of death is the *&#$%##(*^% respawning on top of you as you engage the next mob?
Canada, on the other hand, is a nightmare because of it. Especially in the base areas. -

Quote:Which pretty much describes most MMOs now, unfortunately. So much that I dread any new MMO releases. If you want to play in a console-based video game environment, sure.
Eh, I think it's time to just put up my cape (or, in Seismecca's case, Leather Jacket? ) roleplaying super villains was fun, and I'd rather not spoil those memories by having to suffer through a game I don't particularly enjoy just because it has the same subject matter. I'd much rather spend my time waiting for Star Citizen. -
cel-shading =/= outlines
Celshading is well......the shading. Hence the name. It's the blocky shading that makes everything look even more plastic than it already is. Admittedly, it's not as much of a problem on the highest graphic setting, but if you're stuck on a machine that can't run the highest it doesn't really matter.
Speaking of outlines, I don't even think the developers like it. I've never seen an advertisement with the outlines on, or any piece of ingame footage with it on. So I'm not really sure why its default mode is on. -
Quote:I can hate CO while liking more than one game at a time. SW:TOR is going pretty well for me outside of a few hiccups. TSW is pretty good too. And hell, WoW is popular for a reason.Unfortunately it's common to see such things in gaming forums. Seems to be a set of people who think that you're only allowed to like one game at a time.
Seriously, just because I hate CO doesn't mean I'm hating every game but CoH just to make it look "better".
It just happens to be...well..an incredibly ****** substitute for CoH.
And bad game in general.
I've already pointed out how the majority of powers in most powersets are completely un-required to play. Or how the only repeatable content is Alerts, or how the game really isn't rigged for teaming outside of Alerts. Hideouts and indoor enviroments have an incredibly low population bar making supergroup meetings near impossible. (or the fact that the only way to access the crew menu for supergroups is by traveling allll the way back to the building in the city) Or how the fact that CO has two textures, plastic and shiny plastic. Or the bad jokes. Or how EVERY mission is a parody of something. Or the very first master villain being a racist asian stereotype that can't pronounce Millennium City because it has L's in it. Or the fact that the QA team seems to be staffed by rocks with faces painted on them, as tickets and bugs sit for months at a time, only to be fixed, then reintroduced with the next patch. Or how, even though travel powers use a separate menu, and a separate power point system, you still have to retrain EVERYTHING to change travel powers.
None of these points are to make "CoH look better", they're just major flaws and detriments to players who aren't already hooked on the game. I wouldn't play CO even if I hadn't played CoH first.
So please, don't lump every complaint with "oh, they're just complaining because it's different than their old game". -
Quote:Pretty much. The lack of any real... deterrent from using the same power repeatedly pretty much kills any strategy. I can count the number of powers I've seen with any sort of cooldown on one hand. Or any powers that required any "set up" of any kind, like some of the later CoH powersets. There's pretty much no reason to have any more than 2 offensive powers.... that sounds like it destroys a huge part of what I love about leveling in CoH, looking forward to the next cool power and, when I get it, integrating it into my attack chain and overall fighting strategy.
It sounds like, if I wind up playing CO, I'll just be taking two actual attack powers, a couple of buffs/passives, and just filling in the rest with summons. Because I like summons. -
Quote:Wow that's...kinda boring. I've never been a big fan of angels, especially not the idealized bishounen men in armor with big wings ones. It's like the enemies are getting less creative and cool as the plot goes on.Never mentioned but they were starting to show up in game. Astral christy, empyrean michael, the angel in DA and the one in nightward were all a part of that group.
Let me guess, in the end we would have had to form a 40 man raid in order to sit down and listen to the word of the lord. Or maybe read some literature?
Reminds me of that time the Punisher had magic angel guns. I dont like remembering that. -
Quote:Oh god this. Even within sets there are so many "flavor" powers that you take just for concepts (and because you have to take something). *Note: That "Flavor power" is used, and was created by the CO community, so it's not just a personal opinion.Another problem I've found is that there are "great powers" and "terrible powers" and no real middle ground. Some builds will be rampantly overpowered because of one or two powers, while other builds are nearly useless. Example: Power Armor is freaking absurd and makes playing other "tank" powersets look like wasted effort. Archery is to Munitions as a shotgun is to a straw and spitballs.
Take the Earth power set. Literally the first power you can pick out of the tutorial is Tremor. A ranged, AoE, supreme damage attack that kills most mobs (including lieutenants) with two hits. Has no cool-down, uses minimal energy, and has incredible knock-up, meaning that most mobs cant even get up by the time you line up the second attack.
I used this attack. And solely this attack, from level 8-30. And at level 30 I finally picked up a single damage attack that did slightly more damage than tremor with the right buffs. Although I still kept Tremor as my staple attack.
What an incredibly boring 22 levels that was. -
Quote:Not....really. Maybe a better graphic system....Yeah. Champions has better graphics than COH. Even the people who don't like CO's art style admit to that. Champs has better graphics, it's just a fact. Whether or not you like the art style is personal preference, but it's certainly not grounds for general insults and CAPITAL LETTER LOL'S.
But CO only has two textures, plastic and shiny plastic.
I loved the metal textures in CoH, but the "metal" textures in CO look worse than Morrowind's enchanted items.
The problem is that CO doesn't even try to use its graphic system to full effect, probably because of it's "comic book" theme. If CO had graphics like Startrek Online (which uses the same exact system) I'd play it more. Their faces look like faces, their eyes are actually proportioned to their heads, and their clothing textures look like..get this....cloth.
In the end, even if it has "better graphics"
the textures still look like **** -

It's hard finding a new MMO that has the same amount of attention that the devs paid to CoH. Every other MMO I've tried in the last week feels like the tiniest orphan. Bugs left for months, GM tickets left open perpetually, no new updates for the last 4 months or any planned in the future.
Even the simplest things, like re-adding chat bubbles to The Old Republic is met with a dev response along the lines of "I honestly have no idea if or when that will ever happen", and they're not lying.
Having Paragon Studios work on CoH and only CoH has spoiled me. I'm not used to the reality of every MMO being ran by skeleton crews as the good devs are bounced between new MMO to new MMO in a race to beat WoW.
Looking out at the MMO landscape is like looking at the Bermuda Triangle, littered with sinking and disabled ships as far as the eye can see. And I'm being force to pick which stranded ship is the best one for me. -
Oh no doubt. Even if the Leviathan was just as large as Sharkhead, the sheer act of rising up would destroy every island, and most of the east coast of the United States with tidal waves.
-
Quote:Oh yeah, if one of the larger blue whale measured was ~90-100 feet long, with eyes the size of teacups (say, 5-6 inches wide? I dont drink tea)Uh... actually based on the size ratio of a Blue Whale I'd peg it as the entire tectonic plate the Rogue Isles was based on top of - if it woke up it take out a LOT more than Sharkhead Isle.
then compared to that eye (which I'm guesstimating is what? another 90 feet?) then that means the Leviathan is somewhere around 30,000 feet long. which is somewhere around 5 and a half miles. It really depends on what you consider a "tectonic plate" but it will definitely take out all of sharkhead if it woke up.
*disclaimer. I am horrible at math so take everything math related I say with a grain of salt. -
Quote:that is one of things that is getting me hooked on CO. The lack of need for a team. That means I dont have to wait until prime time to get certain things done. I can keep it rolling when I feel like being a night owl or when I take a day off in the middle of the week when everyone else is at work or school or neither or both.
thats pretty much the only selling point for me
being that my title character Seismecca went from a squishy rock dom to an invulnerable earth tank/brute/ranged earthquake generator -

Quote:Not to mention that if/when CO gets the Foundry, the world opens up just like that.
As a child of the '70s, I thought Anchorman was very chuckleworthy. If anything, watch for the alley fight.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a dev stated that CO will 'never' get the Foundry. Of course, the only CO dev quotes I could dig up were posts about how easy it would be to add it...in May 2011. So take that what you will.
And yeah, the Alley fight, and just to see where the "That escalated quickly" (you know, the one everyone was posting the day of the shutdown announcement) meme came from. -
