4e isn't my favorite and it's a little MMOish, but it can be fairly solid fun nonetheless (for me anyway).
it depends on what you didn't like about 3/3.5. PF does make some very nice tweaks that clean some of the system up, but it's still essentially the 3.5 ruleset. there were a few tings from the Beta test of the game i wish they'd kept in, but that might've been too much a departure from the ruleset than paizo was comfortable with. im running a Pathfinder campaign now, but im using some extra stuff from a supplement called Trailblazer. Which has really seemed to hit it off with my group.

OTOH, 4E isn't bad. there's a lot of stuff it does that works well, and like any other system there's a lot of stuff it does that doesn't. i like playing the game, but i don't (atm) ever see myself running a 4E campaign.

as was brought up, technically anyone can be Punisher, but only one man actually IS the Punisher. But that means writers will have to focus on the content of the character and what makes them heroic instead of just trying to figure out new ways to use their kewl powerz.

I picture some character becoming period pieces. (such as Clark Kent having a job at a paper.) Things that made sense at the time they were conceived probably won't make sense the further things go. I just picture them making the events of the comics forever locked in the 20th century as medevil fantasy is always the way it is.
that depends on how far down the line the characters continue, and if they continue to have them mirror the present day. when they updated Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe, he wasn't a photographer, he was the Daily Bugle's web master. i imagine similar things will happens with Superman (there was a brief time when Clark was a TV reporter), he'll still be a reporter, but he will end up working for a different medium.

that's because the movies were supposed to be more or less straightforward white hats vs. the black hats storytelling. empire bad, rebellion good. to go any deeper you really have to get into the Expanded universe material, and even the folks who support the Empire and do so because they believe the Empire to be the just and righteous government as opposed to these uppity rebels still are willing to do some pretty dark and dirty things if they have to. two off the top of my head are Baron Fel and Mara Jade. Both truly supported the Empire and belived that it was the best way to run the galaxy. Fel turned when he realized the Empire he supported died with the Empire, and Jade didn't really turn until years after that.
  11. are we talking someone that supported the concept of a single Empire? that a unified one galactic government was a good thing as opposed to the chaos that existed during the Old Republic?

that is of course saying that they'll still be publishing Batman stories in 100 years. while im totally behind the idea that the characters ive grown up reading will still be read (in some moderately recognizable form) 100 years from now, i don't really think it'll happen. (but hey, if im still around then, i know ill be pleasantly surprised.)

i do think that just because the tech changes, that for some reason Bruce's core character is going to end up changing to the point where he wouldn't be recognizable by current fans.
  14. NYCC, simultaneously a collection of pure awesome and a wretched hive of scum, villainy, and overpriced vendors. stand around in awe as folks you paid to see don't show up at all, but folks who were never on the schedule show up to make the whole damn thing worth the hours and hours and hours you're going to spend standing in line.

damn the lazy, next time i go to a con im renting scooters, and spot welding a cow catcher to the front of them.
  15. nope. Superman is DCU's.... wait for it... Superman.

also, the event you're referring to happened during a comic disavowed by DC editorial. any actual enjoyment you may have gotten out of said comic was obviously all in your head and due to the hallucinogenic drugs laced with the comic ink. DC Comics in no way endorses or admits the existence of said comic, and reminds all fans that the big uber awesome event to follow Infinite Crisis was Blackest Night, and NOTHING HAPPENED IN BETWEEN THEM!

That is all... if you know what's good for you.

more power to you for your choice, and i dont mean to come across like im belittling the option to simply not pick titles up. but id just like to note that the event that caused you to stop reading them was so long ago, it might be worth picking up some of the current crop to see if they're worth getting. but this is just me trying to get more folks to read the stuff i like so it doesn't get canceled.

only if it froze at the high five and began playing a generic rock tune as the credits started to roll.

I liked some of the DC heroes, and I liked the Marvel Universe. I could not stand the Ultimate Universe. I gave it a fair shot, mind. It just seems a waste of money to actually buy comics now.
if you gave some series a shot and found them not to your cup of tea, then yea, i can grok that your not much of a fan anymore. But the idea of not picking up ANY comics because im not pleased with a particular direction a couple of lines have gone would be like never picking up another fantasy novel because i don't like what they did during the fifth age of Dragonlance. or being a bit more specific, never grabbing another Forgotten Realms book because someone ganked Bruenor Battlehammer.

Well I guess in the case of Marvel, and it's me standing by my decision that I will not start reading Marvel until they fix the OMD crap. That's not happening soon as we saw. For DC, I am sure there are good stories there, but unlike some people, I just can't through away the decades previous hsitory for the reboot. As someone was pointing out WOnder Womans post Crisis origin. I just thought that was wrong, and yet alot of posters here said they considered that canon. I just can't.
it's not throwing away, it's moving on. the Pre-Crisis stories have ended, and in some cases that was a good thing, other times not so much. but if they bring back characters i like and tell good stories, then im going to give the new stuff a shot. i mean we've gone through 4 different iterations of the Legion of Super-Heroes thus far, and im still reading them regardless that my particular favorite iteration no longer exists in current continuity. (to clarify, the post-Zero Hour Legion tyvm )

i guess i can get behind that you don't want to pick up particular titles because they're no longer something you like. i still won't touch the mainstream Spider-man stuff, but i couldn't toss over the rest of the MU because of it.

Perhaps Dick's objection to becoming Batman was because it was someone else's plan for him, not on his own terms. Perhaps his objection has been subconsciously because he knew himself becoming Batman would mean Bruce is gone, and he knows he'd be unable to live up to the legacy of the man he admires most.

But with Bruce "dead", and Tim not old enough, Jean Paul dead at present I believe? (and proven not a good choice anyway), Jason crazy murdering people, Dick had to step into the role, whether he wanted it or not. Because he believed there had to be a Batman. And after being forced to grow into the role, is it so inconceivable that what he wants has changed? That he -does- want to be Batman, after all? Many are the times life surprises people with activities, ideas, and roles that they learn to accept and even cherish, despite initially rejecting.

That is how I would write it if I were the one doing the comic, at least. Dick has been fighting what part of him knew was destiny, fighting to keep Bruce, the one true Batman, around, but now that he's come to terms with it, he's not going to give it up.
    yea, this.

btw, damn you for beating me to this explanation. Next time Gadget, NEXT TIME!!!

i also LIKE having Grayson as Batman and while im not fond of Damian, i do like that he also his own Robin so that Tim can go on being a hero of his own. While it would never happen, i wish Bruce would have been away much longer, if not actually killed. (though his 'death' was just the capper in the crap sandwich that was FC) With Grayson playing the Bat and Tim trying to run Wayne Enterprises, they could have had years worth of decent stories to tell.

But nope, he was away, sales were made. now it';s time to reestablish status quo before the next crossover that 'shakes up the status quo!'

seriously? it was the Crisis that killed DC for you? just to let you know, a few things have changed since then.
  23. yea, sadly the reason Luthor's arc 'mysteriously' disappeared after NML was because at the same time they were using him with the whole B13 storyline and later President Lex over in Superman. ive never been fond that NML's been more or less completely forgotten these days, but then it's been almost 10 years since the end of that storyline. so im pretty sure the editors are hoping no one notices.

JLU more or less mimicked what happened in the comics too, since Eiling downloaded his consciousness into the Shaggy Man in order to be able to thwump the JLA. they ended up leaving him on an asteroid since he couldnt be killed or held.

to be honest it depends on who you talk to. for me it was just a quick jab at the "trilogy" because while the 3 stories had their moments, i think they're pretty bad and are on the same level as stuff like Secret Invasion or Civil War. The first one (complex) was a convoluted mess that wrapped poorly and and ended with a twist that came completely out of left field ruining a character ive liked since he was intro'd (Bishop). The second one (Messiah War) just seemed like a pointless crossover where nothing happened. No development, no explanations, the whole thing really just showing Scott to be an even bigger dick than normal and a way to remind folks "hey, we're still publishing a cable comic". The last one Second Coming, i thought was the best of the three and had a lot of awesome elements to it. One of those elements was neither Cable nor Hope's involvement. It felt like it was a good crossover that had the 'messiah angle' just tacked in there so that we could just get it out of the way. Lot of potential and a lot of good scenes in it, but the Cable/Hope storyline just dragged it down.
