  1. IF nobody answered you its because they don't know. Welcome to CoH - land of the carebears, LOL. You get used to it after a while. Or you go play EVE online, I guess. *le shrug*

Im only gtting into masterminds now, and I can't give you expert advice either, but I can tell you a few basic universal tips.

    Don't slot for defence. Ever.

Do slot for +HP and +recharge. Hit Points are one of the few things tht aren't hurt by ED. Recharge will help you get important big ticket items up faster - in particular you probably want world of pain perma.

Teleport Foe is your friend. Masterminds are not highly mobile, since they have to stay with their pets. INstead of chasing people, bring them to you. It can also bring theminto range of agonizing cry, and your fairly short range pets.

With WoP, your patron shield, and ember shield, you ought to be able get your resistances roughly caped, and with bodyguard mode, suppress pain, and Nullify pain, you ought to be fairly hard to kill.

Procs are (also) your friends. This is true for anyone, but no one more than masterminds whose attacks do rather little damage without it. The fact that many of them are unresistable makes it even better. I suggest stocking your attacks with as many damage procs as you can lay your grubby hands on.

I had a thread of my own on the PvP forums asking about advice on MM secondaries, that might have some advice for you (Ill probably be going /Thermal myself, preferring heat exhaustion over the regeneration of supress pain and easier resist capping, but as far as they told me, either one works well.
  2. Mmm, on a big team (or even jsut with henchmen) /therm can rally give you that 'glorified buffbot' feal that puts some people off. /Dark, as a debuff set, can feel muhc more active, and also give you fewer things to keep track of (paying attention to every buff timer on every pet and person on our team is practicaly a fulltime job in itself). If you can keep track of it all, though, thermal is certainly a great set.
  3. Hmm! I will say I wish I'd read the fine print on Forge. 60 seconds seems like too long a recharge time, if you ask me!
  4. P.S. I have decided t go with Therm. Pain seems like better in huge battles and team settings, and I just don' have a crew to run with. Ill build a bit more for dues, and let it carry over into support when in zones where possible.

Thanks, all of you, for hte advice.
  5. Ahh, keen. I still think you needmore of either defnce or recharge. Low 20s defences just don't cut it. I wouldshoot for at least 30% PReferably 37.5% so that a single purple pill soft-caps you. 45% is way more trouble than its worth, especially if you're planning on letting your henchmen take your hits.

S/L resistance is easy to get. Thats its main virtue. In my expereice, ranged defence, with a minor in AoE, is vastly superior. If you're in melee then you're doing something wrong (at least in PvM - and in PvP defence is just fail these days)
  6. If i get fighting, I can'tg et teleportation for TP foe. Im not sure if thats a trade worht making. THough, Is uppsoe villains don't get Wedding Bands to top up their resistances (mmm... broken temp powers...!). Ill have to give that some thought.

For the record, other powersets would be speed, fitness, and leadership. I might not even take take TP for the sake fo taking jumping, though I suppose its not as critical to resist KB as a mastermind, as it is with other characters.
  7. YO seem to ahve built a lot of resistance into the set bonuses, which is fun, but you should know, obviously, that it doesnt actually help your pets. Or is taht just coincidence. IN any case, I can't help thinking more recharge, or more defence might serve you well.

As for defence, ranged defence with a minor in AoE is much more effective, in my experience. Or rather, tis effective against a much wider range of enemies. S/L defence has the virtue of being much EASIER since you can get about halfway there from just the epic shield (every class has at least one that does defence rather than resistance, as far as I know - for masterminds its in Mace Mastery).

Consider not bothering with the travel powers and relying on ninja run. I did, and I was amazed how much I didn't miss the transition.

I probalby would do Power of the Phoenix, either - I've always been skeptical of rez powers on the simple grounds that it seems silly to spend precious power slots on something that a 250inf pot can do instead.
  8. Cr4akc Whip is teh real big ticket one. The others are fairly comperable to other ST attacks in any set. Of course, the point is that their DAMGE is not comparable to the attacks of other sets, but thats not what we took them for, really. I definatly recommend endurence reduction in Crack Whip.
  9. By taking a resistance shield I can add moreto my range defence from the sets, ironically, which si what we're building for here. AoE is a secondary consideration, definately. I wish it were higher. Melee is irrelevent - imobs should ensure it never becomes an issue (Hover can achieve ~the same effect).

Bellow is what I have now. It has higher defence as the cost of lower recharge. Istill can't clsoe the last 1.4% to make it truly soft-caped, though

  10. Hmm. I suppose my real choice, then, is between more raw survivability with /pain, or... heat exhaustion. Tough choice, LOL!
  11. Is the regen aura from pain really terribly good? It doesn't seemt o do much for me at ~23rd level. Even taking the sum of its effects on all my pets isn't that impressive. Is it higher in PvP perhaps, and Mi'd sjust doesn't show it?
  12. Wow. The idea of a /dark pvp build blows my mind, LOL! Out of curiosity, why pain before therm? I know, I know, the anoying questions. I'm just trying to get a feel for how this build will play out. Out of curiosity, which of the THREE of them, would you say is best for zone PvP? The idea of a dark Miasma charater cleaning house in PvP just tickles me waaaaay too pink.
  13. Dark? Seriously? Wow! I remember, vaguely, the ol daysw hen dark was just unambiguously useless everywhere. But then, so were masterminds, at the time. *le shrug*

Between therm and pain, what do you think wins out?
  14. Im working on a demon summoning build (me and the whole known universe). Im currently working on a /pain build, but a friend today made a great case for thermal (mmm... heat exhaustion... yummy)!

This makes me rethink the matter, and I'm led to... well... to my title question, I guess. What IS, all things being equal, the best MM secondary for PvP (both solo, and group)?

Thanks, as always, for the help.
  15. It is also, Ive always thought, worth remembering that that proc has the disadvantage of randomness, as opposed to a simple recovery boost. .2 is simply an average. Sometimes, it might happenf ar more often, and sometimes far less. It all works out in the wash, so to speak (or so the statisticians tell us), its entirely possible that at a time when you actually NEED it it won't be there. a flat %recovery bonus is reliable.
  16. Wait, yes I can. It means lowering my beautiful, beautriful recharge bonus, I can. By rearranging Soothe, I came up with the following (It also incorporates Enforced Moral instead of Assault - still not sure about that choice, but I'll decide by thirty whether I agree with Plainguy about it or not).

    As always, thanks all!

P.S. Ninja Run is the best thing ever! I dont miss a travel power, even in Grandville!

  17. Hmm. Right you are. I will certainly do that. Ideally I want very much to find a third slot for Stamina and have both. I just can;t fathom where I could take it from.
  18. Plainguy, I do not see a build posted by you. I've looked twice. Am I going off my rocker, or is something wrong? O.o

Incidently, there will be a PVP version of this character, but that is not this build. No sane PvPer builds for defence, for one thing, and no sane PvP mastermind excludes Teleport Foe, for another.
  19. Inspiration!

I realized the other night that if I wasn't too particular about enduring horrible, horrible agrivation, I could always drop super speed and simply rely on Ninja Run, and free u some space in the build. What I arrived at was the following.

My one remaining tortured internal controversy is whether tactics, or Pain-bringer, will be more useful to me over-all. Thoughts?

Oh, and thanks to all. the suggstions have been fantastic! I really appreciate it. This is the only game I've played where you can really ahve a thread like this since UO.

  20. Hmm, I CANT make up the difference with travel powers. they seem to ahve nerfed BotZ! Bastards! Grr!
  21. Mmm, I think you're right about soothe. I will probably ditch the assault for it. As you point out, those toggles are a lot fo end to run for what they do. I do need maneuvers, and tactics (with its set), though, to reach the defence threshold. I supposeI could go back to flgiht and get 2 copies of BotZ to make up the difference, but don't you find tactics is worth it, at all?

Slotting up perosnal attacks is mroe for the set bonusses than for the extra damage. The damage is just nice. I mgiht as well be doing it as opposed to /nothing/, after-all.

I can't say I agree with you about painbringer though. It would be nice to ahve, but again, I'd rather have assault if I ahd slots to spare, and I'd certainly rather have the -res of the personal attacks. If I weren't planning on absorbing the bulk of the agro myself, the +regen component would be more useful, but I just don't see it as a must have for this build.

My patience (and my budget for gold farmers, when patience runs out), is as close to infinite as makes no difference. Influence is no object. But I appreciat ethe concern.

Incorporating your suggestions, my current build is as follows (may change if I decide ot replace leadership with a 2nd travel pool):

  22. Hmm! Hold over fromwhen the build ahd flight in it, I think. I never noticed! XD Probalby I'll take hurdle, now.
  23. I would have liked soothe and painbringer in about that order. Assault is better than pain-bringer, no question - 11% to 8 team members and 7 pets is a much greater addition to damage than 37% to any one person, and although the regeneration is nice, any worthwhile tank will have had to plan to survive whatever you're doing without counting on the presence of a /pain mastermind, unless you're part of a regular supergroup team.

Whether I should take Soothe and drop assault, though, still keeps me up at night (literally, one time - i need help! XD). What i probably will do is simply wait and see whether I find myself needing it at high level. After all, in theory, people should be trying to damage /me/ not my team-mates, but no agro management is air-tight, especially not with pool-power taunts, so one never knows when an errant pet (or team-mate) may need saving. If I find this situation is common enough at high level I'll definitely change yup the build and forgo the 11% damage buff.
  24. datachunk as requested

and thanks for the true advice.

does anone nthink it might be wise to ditch assault for soothe, even if I can only leav eit with one slot? how much is 10% when you really think about it? XD

  25. Please find build bellow. I found myself horifyingly starved for powers and slots, by virtue of taking all 3 personal attacks from my primary (and, indeed, the entire primary). This is not merely vanity (although it does look awesome) - the -res debuff of "hellfire" effects is so good it hurts!

It did lead to some tough choices, though. Several powers, from Corruption, to Anguishing Cry, to all-important Stamina are under-slotted to provide the IOs. On the powers angle, Soothe and Painbringer, two powers I really would have liked to have, didn't make the cut.

I'm still in anguish over these decisions, so if anyone would lie to propose alternative ways I might have done things, please, please do!

Note that the goals of the build, in terms of slotting, were fairly simple: at east 37.5% ranged defense (enough to soft-cap with a single, tier 1, purple potion), then enough global recharge to make World of Pain perma, and the other long-charge items as close to it as practical, then endurence (this build is already expensive at level 11), then Hit points.

    P.S. I can't export color codes? WaaaH!
