No one said the exact words, but it was certainly the impression given with the statement that, having been deployed yourself, you were fine with it in response to the argument about people who were, by various means including deployment, forced to leave the game for an extended period.
-
No, anyone who thinks that just because they think one way, everyone else should as well is childish.

Quote:And that is what I meant. They lost a name that they had and they quit because of it. And in this case, the name was lost because of an actual rules violation. Do you honestly think people are going to take it any better if they lose a name simply because they've been away from the game and haven't violated any actual rules?"People have quit over losing names the already had." That is what you said? The only way that I know of someone losing a name they already had on an active is if they were generic'd due to possible copyright infringement. Perhaps I read that sentence wrong, but that is how it reads to me based on the rest of the post.
As I say, no one has quit because a name they wanted wasn't available. Show me one case where someone has and I will stand down. But, as it stands, the argument from a business standpoint for letting people keep their names is stronger than the argument for taking them away. -
Quote:See, now you're going into "slippery slope" territory, which is inherently flawed in itself. "Where do you draw the line?" is a flimsy argument, usually leading to a list of increasingly absurd hypotheticals. Oh, wait, you did just that right there....Nobody's stretching anything; you can't divide them like that. An absence is an absence is an absence. Unless NCSoft wants to delineate a specific policy regarding, say, military deployments (which they could do if they saw fit to), they have to treat every absence the same way. It's not their problem why a person can't play.
Besides, where does the line go? Military deployments? Civilian Department of Defense contractors who are sent to war zones? Prolonged illnesses? Loss of income? Identity theft? Mom said no? What exactly constitutes a "forced" absence? Unless everyone is treated the same, NCSoft would need a team of people to evaluate what was and wasn't a "forced" absence, case-by-case. Which is probably not worth the time, manpower or money it would take to implement, to say nothing of the problems it would cause when someone disagreed with the evaluator's ruling. You think someone quitting over a name getting genericed is bad, wait until people are told their story of why they can't play wasn't sad or verifiable enough or for whatever reason didn't qualify as "forced."
The simple fact is that you and some others have an overblown sense of the amount of entitlement $15/month buys you. You also seem to think that just because you're willing to have character names taken from you, others should be as well. That's just plain childish.
As I said before, people are more attached to names they already have than names they could have had. No one has ever quit over not getting a name they wanted. People have quit over losing names they already had. Because of this, the argument for letting them keep their names of established characters ( No solid line there. Say level 20 and up... ) on the chance they could come back far outweighs the argument for taking them away.
However, again, your continued $15/month doesn't entitle you to this. -
My argument is for cases of "forced" absence, which is why I was responding to a statement about that. Don't stretch my argument to cover inactive accounts in general.
However, I would say it's unlikely if not LUDICROUS to believe that even one person has ever canceled their account due to being unable to create a character with a specific name. On the other hand, I find it far more likely someone would cancel or decline to resubscribe over losing a name they already had. It has happened. People have canceled accounts over generic'ings they disagreed with.
People are attached to their names they have. Far more attached than they are to the names they don't have but want. It's like having $100 stolen from you vs failing to win $100 in a raffle. -
Quote:Wasn't very hard to get better than the first analogy, is it was completely awful. As for the second, I feel that there should be a way to suspend your phone account without losing the number, too. So, you may think it's fine to be forced to waste money on something you can't use, but most other people have a problem with being screwed over by unethical companies...When I deployed, I was expected to keep paying rent for a house I couldn't access. If I hadn't, they would have let someone else -- someone who did pay -- have it.
Actually, a better analogy? When I deployed, I was expected to keep paying for a telephone service I couldn't use, or risk having to get a new phone number when I got back. -
Might want to be careful with that one, though. A bit of a stretch, but there is a Stephen King book by that name whose lead character's thing was fire powers, as the name implied. Depending on who sees it and the GM that gets it, the stretch may not be too far for a generic.

Quote:1) IrrelevantAnd what are the chances that someone who hasn't subcribed for 4+ years still :
1. Has the same computer with the game still installed
2. Has the same email address because you know...
3. Has forgotten the username/password
4. has the original install discs
5. Remembers the names of every toon on the account
2) Irrelevant
3) Given normal habits, not likely. Most people tend to use the same login/password for all of their non-critical/leisure accounts or very similar ones.
4) Irrelevant, as the client can be downloaded online.
5) All of them? Not likely. Most? Reasonably likely. Their favorites? Absolutely guaranteed. And their favorites aren't necessarily going to be level 50s.
To be blunt, someone needs to smack you for that suggestion. Seriously? You think someone should have to continue paying for a game that they cannot access just to keep their names? Remove head from rectum. -

Anyone know a lot about message boards? Why are we changing? I assume because you either have a lot more access or perhaps less upkeep. Can anyone post in some layman terms the differences between the board softwares?
Does this mean the star system is going away?
[/ QUOTE ]
I personally would like a system where someone can rate a person and not a thread. Sure, people might get Karma bombed, but it'd be very entertaining to watch.
[/ QUOTE ]
"Might"? They absolutely would. It always happens on forums with those sorts of user ratings. It did here when we had it. They're useless. -

Although sometimes if you haven't looked at a thread, it will still mark early posts as "read" and plop you somewhere down the page the first time you click on it.
[/ QUOTE ]
If it marks the thread as read before you read it and doesn't drop you at the top of the page when you click on the thread, then someone's added a post since you last refreshed the post list. I assure you, though, it's not random.

Although it can still be annoying.

I don't dispute that part. -

I only want one thing from the new boards. Everything else is fluff.
When I click on a thread topic... I want to be taken to the first post in that thread. Not tossed somewhere seemingly random and forced to scroll up to find the OP.

You're not being tossed somewhere random. You're being tossed to the first new reply in the thread. If there's more than one page and you want to go to the first post, simply click the "1" on the list of pages. -

So you know, sure's is not a proper conjunction. The words sure and as should never be combined in such a way.

Question:
Say I am doing the Maria Jenkins thread, and as we know each mission you get to fight an AV. If you auto-complete the mission with the contact, do you get credit for defeating the AV in that particular mission towards the defeat 13 Praetorians to gt the badge?
Hugs
Stormy
[/ QUOTE ]
You get badge credit for defeating the mob in question for the badge. If you drop the mission, you didn't defeat the mob(s). So, why would you get credit for it? -
And the answer is the same every issue: IF you can't find the answer in the dev/community digest, no. All we know is the closed beta will start right after Comic Con. No, we NEVER have an estimate on an issue this early, so why bother asking?
For the second question, this is PLAYER questions. We can't give you more info, gotta ask the devs for that. -
When you hit reply or make a new post, there should be a box under where you enter text that says "Instant UBB codes". Very first one in that box is "URL". That's the easiest way to do it. Conversely, replace the { } with [ ]: {url=www.urlhere.com}enter text here{/url}
-
Nothing has been confirmed or, honestly, even hinted at from the devs about a new AT.
-
[ QUOTE ]
I think what you're asking about is synchronization.
Each attack done has a specific animation time, and the game deals the damage at the point where the power will hit the target - at least visually.
So, when you shoot an arrow at an enemy, you will see the damage tick appear when the enemy gets hit.
[/ QUOTE ]
Barring lag and such, yes. However, except in the case of interruptable powers like snipes, the determination of whether or not the power hits and the damage dealt is actually made as soon as the power is activated. This is why you can't duck around a corner to avoid a shot. -

It is true that it had a few exceptional titles, but that did not make the system itself anything more than horrid... And the N64's controller was one of its most outstanding flaws, IMO.
[/ QUOTE ]
Since we're squarely off-track at this point, what about the N64 was so "horrid"?
[/ QUOTE ]
Graphics, the controller, clinging to a game format that was outdated and bulky at the time ( Cartridges rather than discs ). With a few notable exceptions, the game library was bad, too. -
