Are you sure about this!? Because I've literally combed through the options, looking for a way to get rid of it. This could be a case of "THB is wrong about something," hardly the first time. But I really don't think it's the case- I would love to be proven wrong though.

I've been playing a lot of other games since the announcement of COH closing, and I'm sure others have been as well. After going back to COH for a while tonight, this experience has left me ultimately very frustrated with our game.
I'm not sure if it's just my imagination or not, but the camera reverting to the "behind the character" position EVERY TIME a power is executed on my behalf (or on the behalf of any player of the game) has become the HEIGHT of frustration for me. I find myself holding down the right mouse button as often as possible, and becoming completely disoriented every time I let it go to do something else (ie: click a macro, but still pressing an attack in the process) due to a terrible camera view.
Now, this isn't a problem on open maps since the auto-route camera tends to still provide a decent amount of visibility... But COH is the king of restrictive and enclosed mission environments, and it becomes borderline unplayable frustration under those conditions.
I never remember this being a huge stress factor in the past, but I also didn't play many other games. Maybe I became subliminally and unjustifiably content with this control/camera orientation in COH, but I can tell you that now, for whatever reason, I find it absolutely loathsome.
So I guess you can view this as a sort of positive outlook- After COH is gone, we will never have to deal with auto-spin again. -
Hyper, AM in CO is largely considered a waste. Think of your advantage points like the slot crunch in COH, except at times more brutal. The goal should be to build your energy sustainability to a point that you don't need to rely on your energy builder at any point, and you can still use your attacks (obviously without AM) without depleting your energy, getting max damage out of them through either rank 3 or rank 2 with a good advantage- You can't maximize your attacks and still pick AM since there's a point limit per power. There are tons of advantages, and energy unlocks, that can help achieve that goal elsewhere in your build. I'm actually going to have to retcon quite a bit to get there on my character, but Molecular Self Assembly with INT as a superstat along with some other neat things like the force sheathe advantage in force shield, and then there's gear and characteristics/spec trees.

Quote:My observation of the forums from 2005 through 2011 is what kept me from posting.... It doesn't bother me if people are "rude" to me on a forum, but to say that new posters are always met with open arms here is a flat out lie...I have seen "noobs" torn to shreds for asking so-called "dumb" questions...not just here, but on every MMO forum I have participated in.
Again...nothing special about the CoH community - it's just another MMO community with decent and not so decent posters and everything in between.
Stop quoting on the bottom, IBTT! It's so rude! What the hell man! Rabble! -
Quote:Ohh, adding something to the channel is a good idea. *high five.* It would be nice to get at least a chunk of the core KF's crew over there so we can all stay in touch/keep playing together once COH is gone.I'm hesitant to label it freeform, because that implies that one must be freeform to join. It also implies that any type of freeform is welcome, when obviously I would prefer characters with a majority of Void powers (or blue/white colored powers for the peacebringer equivalent).
Title nitpicking aside, I plan on moving over to CO for our Friday events either as soon as CoH is down, or we stop getting enough people to run Kheldian Fridays here. Whichever comes first. I'll also want to see how many people are migrating to CO, because if it's only like two or three, then it's not really an event. More of a superteam, really. And we'll be able to flex the times if need be as the situation arises.
I suppose I will have to edit the KF channel with CO contact information, but to those of you that haven't already (if you plan on seeing me there), feel free to add @stonedaemon on CO when you get a chance.
It's in my signature but I'm @oneheadedboy in CO.
And you're totally right about the title- Free Form Friday just rolled off the tongue though.
Re: Equivalents.
For anyone toying with the idea of moving over to CO but not sure about free form, there are a couple of Archetypes similar to Khelds.
The Radiant is light themed.
The Void is negative energy themed.
If you are willing to tackle the free form learning curve, you can make something drastically more similar to a Kheldian. Switching builds on the fly means that you can have the equivalent of a tri form Kheldian, though a Nova costume would be pretty tough to replicate. Doom said he had some luck coming up with a Black Dwarf look though.
Also, The Rush of Battle from the Vindicator tree is very similar to stygian circle (but less OP.) -
Re: Currencies in CO. I felt that way at first until I thought of a way to compare/understand relative to COH.
-Resources --> inf.
-Recognitions are various forms of merits. MCPD-->Reward merits, Primus-->Vanguard merits, UNTIL-->Astral merits.
-Questionite --> Empyrean merits (or alignment merits?)
Now obviously these aren't totally accurate, but thinking along these lines helped me make sense of them a bit when I was first starting out (not that I've been playing for very long, but you get the point.)
Re: level speed. I feel like I level MUCH faster in CO, especially considering I've been soloing 99.9% of the way. Having the level cap 10 levels lower helps with that too of course.
Quote:Hold down left mouse to spin the camera around.I don't know that you can camera pan around while flying. If you go into your options you can turn off the "always face forward" thing so you can rotate your camera around and get screenies.
Oh, and here's another cool picture of my guy meditating by a volcano. Just because.

Assuming people are still logging into COH at that point. I thought it'd be best to start scheduling our CO trajectory ASAP since the COH population has been dwindling more and more rapidly since the announcement. I'm worried that if we don't start moving people to CO as quickly as possible, we'll lose all of our familiar faces because no one will know what the plan is.
It's obviously up to Stone though. Shrug. -
Quote:You mean like if you came back to COH without paying for it and couldn't use your Kheldians, Controllers, Masterminds, Crabs, IO's or Incarnate powers anymore? Or the Auction House? Or global chat channels? Or join Super Groups? It's probably already been said, or something similar enough, but I'll add my feedback (Sorry, everyone, I didn't read the entire thread.
)
I bought CO back in '09 when it first came out and I was... selectively pleased. The graphics were a step up, but everything felt either overpowered, gimped, or just clunky.
Finally, when I tried to get back into the game in '12, I realized that almost half of the costume pieces I'd used and loved were made unavailable to me, as well as the characters I'd left behind.
In confusion, I jumped to the forums and asked for help, where I was informed that I'd just been "renting" the costume pieces and freeform character slot for the price of their monthly fee.
After paying their $50, I was in no better a place than those who had just downloaded the game that day.
I sighed, told the community that this was not likely the game for me, and I left without looking back. It felt really shady to me.
I think CO is less restrictive for free accounts, but unfortunately they also seem to have a community mentality that they don't want to pay for things. In COH the attitude has always been the "Shuddup and take my money" approach. In CO, they farm to convert in game money to CS money. They do surveys to get free CS money. This attitude is even perpetuated on their forums, and it makes me feel awkward. I've always been willing to spend money on games I like, because I'm happy to support something I enjoy. That always seemed to be the primary attitude here in COH, but not so much over there, which is puzzling. It really is a great game. -

Quote:No, I'm saying that it doesn't entertain me in this format. I love literature, I read quite a bit. It's sort of hard to go from Infinite Jest to "Defeat the super villain on screen bad guys" and still presume to take the latter seriously. Are you implying an immersive story can't be fun? As a frequent reader of fiction and aspiring author, I have a major bone to pick with you if you think so. I like to know what the evil robot cowboys and sharks have been doing to cause my hero to be called in to pound them. Which brings us to....
Quote:Actually I always thought super heroes fight villains because the villains were breaking the law or threatening the world, not because they wanted to have an "lol" and be entertained.
When Captain States-'Merica gets killed by that level 20 contact in the purple jumpsuit, you actually think it carries emotional weight?
When Sister Psyche takes an arrow to the knee.. er, chest, you're actually more concerned about her dying than you are about how in the HELL she managed to "threaten the lives" of everyone in Paragon city when:
A.) You can't even target citizens!
But even if you could...
B.) She was WAY past the target cap!
COH thinks its stories matter. I like that CO knows better.
Quote:Well, unfortunately I prefer more depth than... "I beat up villains because I can." That's why the story is important to me. I wouldn't bother with a lot of games if it wasn't for the story. Heck, even the old game Donkey Kong had a plot (albeit very limited): save the girl from the big gorilla.
Quote:CoH's story is hardly on the level of Kafka. That's comparing apples and carrots.
Quote:CoH is no more deep than the comic book medium it's inspired by. I view skipping the CoH writing as skipping the word balloons in comics and just looking at the pictures. -
Quote:I just like gameplay, but environment is important to me. Story is sort of relevant to that- I like the superhero world, I don't like dragons or epic asian quest worlds. But I also don't care about the involved lore or bad guys, lol. I play games for fun. In CO, I like beating up guys in purple hats, I like beating up robot cowboys, I like beating up mechanical sharks. It's campy and fun.And I'll never understand why anyone can do that. The story (motivation) is as important to me as the task.
The general gist of the story is summed up in the cut scenes anyways. This isn't exactly Kierkegaard- You're a super hero and you fight generic evil bad guys for great lol's, comical moments and entertainment.
I've always been annoyed by the COH lore crowd, even though I love COH. I mean, to me, it's a fun super hero game. The intelligent, involved aspect of the game has always been end game character building since I started playing. I think I have a decent understanding of COH lore, but I only picked it up by accident while playing a fun video game. It's just not important to me.
If I wanted to become involved in the content of great walls of text I would be reading Kafka, not the dialogue in super hero video games. At least CO doesn't make the mistake of taking itself too seriously in that respect, and I'm very grateful in that respect. It's a tremendous breath of fresh air. -
Just took a few more screenshots. I think the first really shows that all faces don't necessarily have to be identical. I did quite a bit of tweaking with the scales on this. The second is my armor-y costume for my tank build, and the third is my civilian clothes while I chill in my basement hideout.

Congrats on your first fiddy. If you need some inf to help slot up, I can help you out. Send me a tell in game @Septipheran

Personally I never sit down and read everything in any game, I just scan the text enough to know what the objectives are if it isn't glaringly obvious (which nine times out of ten, it is.)

Yeah, exactly this. (Though replace "Vorpal" with "Ion"). With resistances on my Elec/Invuln Brute hitting 80% with Resilient Alpha (and 90% with Resilient Alpha and the new Set bonuses on the Test server), I feel like nothing (other than Psi and some Incarnate Trial bos
That's all well and good on an end game build. But my free form character with basic gear drops in CO was soloing +3 level mobs in the equivelant of say, x5 groups at level 20. I've never made or seen a character in COH running only SO's that can comfortably solo +3x5 at level 20 (excluding Claws/Fire only running juiced up advantageous AE farm maps.) And CO doesn't even have inspirations. I soloed all the comic books and adventure packs from 20-25, again with basic gear. I've never soloed TF's in COH during that level range using only SO's, and even if I did it would have taken twice as long and been twice as tedious with less than half the production value in the content. -
I never had any trouble with it on my Void AT and my free form guy without a passive at that point in the leveling phase. The latter uses targeting computer as his passive on his main build too, and I've been doing well with that up to level 34 so far, shrug... In the lower levels I always blocked before the higher rank enemies used their bigger attacks. It shows an icon several seconds before they que the attack on you.

I think I might be the only COH player who thinks Champions looks fantastic.

Quote:For those of you that planned on attending tonight, I won't be able to make it tonight (for house related reasons). Sorry guys. I'll see you next Friday.
So when does Free Form Fridays start? My guy in Champs will in all liklihood be 40 by next weekend. Let's do this!

Quote:I have been leveling with Bionic Shielding- That combined with Force Shield essentially means that in a tough situation when I over aggro, I can simply hit my heal, block, and have both my health and energy fully restored about 2 additional seconds into the onslaught. At this point, I can charge up my AOE and be done with the whole mess in a matter of seconds.Still not a fan of the active block. I'm not a ******* twitch gamer. I haven't been for a few years now.
And, to be fair, with my KO blow and FS equivalents, I'm killing more enemies quicker.
It's always nice to have a backup plan. In COH, it was a tray full of purples. In CO, it's just picking the right powers and/or having another build to fall back on.
Quote:I just hit 20 and he's fairly decent. Just really irritating at times. A lot of the game irritates me. Stuff I've taken for granted from day 1 in CoH, stuff Cryptic got RIGHT the first time and promptly forgot.
.
When it comes to knowing to go into the water in this specific mission, the mission dialogue text tends to be very specific or at least give strong hints as to what your objective is and where you can find it, if it's not glaringly obvious. A lot of this is just getting used to the game. I just figured out that I could press F12 to re-arrange my UI a week or so ago, and I've been playing for almost a month. -
Quote:The only thing that's making me feel less than "super" is the fact that more than about 8 enemies and I'm toast. No matter what.
You're playing free form right? Get a good block power, an active defense and slotted passive. At level 20 I was able to take on groups of 5 +3 enemies on my ranged damage build (Granted a lot of that was one shotting or near one shotting everything with Ricochet Throw before I even aggroed them half the time.) I feel like characters are much more powerful before the level cap in CO as opposed to leveling characters in COH. Now at level 33 on my second tank build with regen as my passive I haven't found much I can't handle, albeit with slower clearing speeds. Being able to switch between builds on the fly is a godsend in that respect though.
That's fair. -
What about masks? I think the faces are more customizable in CO personally. I love the age/scruff/scar etc. effects and the sliders for proportions feel much more extensive to me.
-
Quote:Sounds like he/she just wants a mainly Human-form only PB build with Dwarf tacked on as sort of a "shapechange vanity" power without any of the Dwarf powers slotted up.
Seems like a bit of a waste to me if that's the case but a generic Human-form only PB could probably waste a single power choice on something like that without too much setback. Still if I just wanted Dwarf form to "show off" I'd probably make a special "not intended for real combat" build for that.
It doesn't have to be a waste- Dwarf can take steadfast KB or +def and glad +def, and dwarf step adds a mule for a -KB IO. I've also built s/l softcapped Kheld builds that only used human form but took dwarf for kinetic combat mules. -

Oh, I have a couple screens of my character in CO that I can share too. He's not a recreation of anything I have in COH though (yes I leave the outlines on. Don't judge me.)
