There are wild turkeys that live in the woods surrounding my house.

...And whenever I go outside they stalk me. It's like one of those horror movies where the creature is hiding while watching it's prey, and then the camera shows it darting really quick to a new spot to watch and the victim hears something and turns to look but doesn't see anything before it is hidden again...

Hmmmm... Are we going to run a reminder in the City Scoop letting people outside of our circle know about this thread?
[/ QUOTE ]
I put a note up on the Virtue forum (lots of art freaks there), but I think a note in the City Scoop would be a good idea...we may want to consider extending voting if we do that though as Juggy said the last day of voting is Friday, which would not give the readers a lot of time to vote....
TL -
Wow, 3 people kicked off? Yikes! You realize it's only February and we're already down to half our starting line up, right? At this rate, the competition will be over before the snow melts!
All of the pieces were great, but keeping in line with the voting rules (and since it's bad form to vote for yourself), I'm going to vote for Crestent and Spino.

No fornicating on the art board, how can we draw with such a commotion going on?
[/ QUOTE ]
You can draw us while fornicating.
[/ QUOTE ]
It can be quite difficult to draw while fornicating. Hard to keep the paper from crinkling.....

You mean all those pieces with the different art styles and signatures were not done by you?

For drawing paper, I just find sketchbooks on the cheap - clearanced out or on sale. Failing that, like Scarf said, printer/copy paper works just fine.
For the drawing tools, I also recommend cheap mechanical pencils, Bic's work for me just fine. As for inking, I go a tiny more expensive and go with gel or roller ball ink pens, simply because I find they give me a smoother line than say a regular cheapo ball point pen. I've recently been turned on to Micron pens, and I really like the results. As for an eraser, go with a gum or a white one. NO pink, blue, green, whatever. They sometimes leave colored marks on your paper and don't give you the cleanest erasings.
For other tools, I would recommend a artist manniquin for posing or something similar that's just as posable. I use a Marvel Legends Spider-Man fig when I need an assist for getting a pose right.
The biggest thing is, don't rush out and buy everything people will mention on this thread, and look for deals when you can. For example, people may recommend a really great brand of colored pencils but they might cost $50 for the set. That's a big investment when you're just beginning, Crayola pencils or another cheaper brand may suit your needs just fine until you decide it's time to upgrade and/or "get serious", then again, they just may be perfect for what you need. Also, that way you won't feel cheated if you discover you just don't like working with colored pencils. I fell into that trap in college, spent a lot on art supplies that I hardly used, simply because I rushed out and bought willy-nilly based on the professors and upperclassmen's art preferences.

I am hesitant to run a parallel "theme a month" just for the scoop because I don't want to take away from your contest. I think that would be rude.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't really think you would be taking away from Juggy's contest, as there's only a set number of entrants in it, a number that will dwindle each month. So your art challenges would allow those who are not in or were voted out of the contest (and if they're up to it, some who are still in) to participate in a separate but similar thing.
Just because KFC sells chicken, doesn't mean that Taco Bell can't...they're both still making money for Pepsi.
Wow...that's a heck of an analogy for this early in the morning....

What can the City Scoop do to make the idea more paletable?
My personal (read: individual and not official Scoop) idea was that we pick themes a bit more guided in theme but open ended in potential.
"Your own worst enemy"
"The moment of victory"
"Endure"
Do those sound like themes one could work with?
On the other side of things, what could we do with Snow_Globe's theme that would make it more enticing? Letting the artists vote on an art style? Extend/Shrink the time period? Offer prizes to participates of note?
There's a lot of potential in the idea of a "Meet the Theme" art challenge. Let's grow a bit and then harvest it, like a Little Sister with oh so much Adam.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think that's a step more in the right direction. The great thing about this forums is that we're not all professional artists or art students. Sure, I took a lot of art classes in my day, but I rarely paid attention and did my own thing...trying to change my style to fit a specific style that's not my own?...just far too much "work" for a 2 job working, baby raising, just-for-fun artist like myself. Sure I like trying new things and pushing myself, but I do it within my own style, to help expand that style and make it better.
We have so many unique styles in this forum, and that's what makes it great. To ask everyone to art the same way is kind of a crime. Something like what you mentioned would stimulate an artist's imagination, allow them to use their own style, and take the theme in much more varied directions.
I don't think that what I'm trying to say in my head is coming out in print right, so I guess I'll try to sum up by saying "themes" good, "styles" bad. Maybe it's just my point of view, but "Art Nouveau" seems limiting to me, but something like "Endure" opens so many more possibilities and many more different ways to interpret it.

The immunity thing just means he can't get voted out of the competition, Tricky can still win this month's challenge, and get immunity for next month, but if he was a bottom scorer, he won't be out of here.
At least, that's the way it works on Project Runway...not that I watch the show...my wife does.... <.<

Sadly, given the nearly complete antagonism I am receiving, I doubt that what I was attempting is worthwhile.
[/ QUOTE ]
I dunno, it may just be me, but reading through this tread, some of that "antagonism" seems to be coming from your end too, and in any case it certainly has not been "complete".
Good luck with this challenge though, I hope it does get people interested....
TL -
So, just to clarify, when you say "signature characters", you mean anyone with a unique name, correct? Meaning Manticore, Mender Silos, Katie Hannon, etc.? Not Skull, Clockwork Prince, Etc....
I just hate to be halfway through an elaborate picture of FemmeFrostfire and have to start over....

More votes please.
I mean in general, this isn't a ploy to garner more votes for myself.
But if you wanted to vote for me, I wouldn't stop you.
I guess what I'm saying is vote for whomever you like, just vote.

My question is, why does everyone think he eats brains? In his pre-evil introduction scenes it showed him as able to just see how tiny watch parts all moved together and worked to get their job done. That's what he does, he sees how things work. Just cause he lops off someone's skull to see how their brain handles running their own heroic powers doesn't mean he's munching on em.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think that whole theory started because there's a lot of allusions to it, specifically Sylar's own dialogue about "tasty powers" and such.
Plus, there's a number of stories about people thinking they gain control/get more powerful by consuming the flesh of their enemies (touched on a bit in the Spider-Man"Kraven's Last Hunt"). Adds to the creep out factor of Sylar, and since they don't specifically say/show what Sylar does with the brains...people tend to let their minds go to the most gruesome conclusions.
Personally, I'm on the hedge, leaning more towards the "he just pokes and prods and perhaps takes apart the brains" camp. I went with the eating theme as I was trying to go for the whole "comic cover over-exaggerating the action inside to entice people to read" thing with my piece.

I vote for Arctic Innocence's piece. It has the feeling of one of Isaac's farsight paintings from the show.

PS - Will we know about next month's theme before the 1st? Just curious. -
Who is the character in front? I can figure out the rest of them, but I'm lost as to who your "Statesman" is....

Great use of perspective in your pieces, makes them really exciting to look at.
