Quote:You hang with some fussy people.Every refer a friend promotion Cryptic ran, I sent out those invites. People responded and came and played for two weeks. I couple stayed for almost 3 years. Each one of them asked me what origin they should be. Joining the game that way doesn't get you the little book you and I got when we bought the game. They get a PDF and they should read it front to back but it dosen't change the fact that when a friend asks me what origin they should be, and I know that first time though the game slotting is more confusing being Science instead of being Mutation I'm not being a very good friend if I tell them it doesn't matter. I realize my friends, who aren't knuckle dragging idiots, each of them knows how to read, is going to look at the description of a Mutation SO and know right off the bat what it is going to enhance and if I tell him it doesn't matter pick any origin and once he realizes that Mutation has every thing you need to know right in the title and Science makes you click, and click to get the same information they are gonna want to know why I didn't tell them that.
My nephew is 10, getting him to read the word resistance isn't too much of a problem. Hiding that word behind something named Argon Experiment to creating a problem.
My youngest brother was 11 when he started. He had no problems at all with the enhancement system, even though it was radicaly different than the item systems form the games he was used to. And his first language isn't even English.
I still think most people don't care as much as you seem to think. -
I'm still not seeing a problem. And I know you weren't referring to yourself, but since you apparently see all sorts of problems that indicate a very short attention span, where I never experienced them, you had me wondering.
The only change that wouldn't be a huge amount of effort compared to the small problem that I can see, would be a better interface for shops.
One were all the enhancements were divided by type (TO, DO,SO) and then by origin under different tabs or something. So you don't have to deal with a huge list.
I'm not opposed to renaming all the SOs and DOs or whatever. I just really don't see the need for it. -
Update your videocard drivers to the most recent version. They're horribly out of date and could be(probably are) the cause of your problems.
Also make sure to update windows (turn autoupdate on if you forget to do it on a regular basis!)
Edit: make sure to remove your old video drivers before you install the new ones. -
Quote:What are you talking about? You click the updater, it dowloads the latest patch ...100 hours for this! i would just find a downloadable patch for this
can anyone of you guys give me a link for a patch of this game?
Latest patch.
If the dl is to slow, try the advise given in this thread (and in others). -
I learned the enhancement system using the magic origin. None of those have logical names either. I didn't have much problems then, I still don't have em now.
Quote:Damage resistance SOs are closer to the greenest color on the list or the darkest blue color on the list? Person buys GR, in 30 days they have to decide to resub or leave. The amount of time spent opening up two pop ups is going to cut down on the time they spend enjoying the game.
Quote:Catalyst: Improved Resistance
Argon Experiment
Which one of those is Science?
Quote:Do you think its polite or impolite for a team member to be afk from the team for 5 minutes in order to level and shop and enhance. What if it takes them 10 minutes is it okay. What if its a couple of players afk for that long. When a new player has to spend the time reading all that info they may not realize they are an inconvience possibly to the team. If my team leader has decided its polite to wait for everyone before we even enter a mission and I think we should wait for noone, I'm gonna be polite and go with the leaders wishes but I hope that newbie doesn't have to find what he wants listed in the science section cause its gonna take them longer to find it.
Also teamleaders that ask to wait for the whole team to get there, will find me leaving the team fairly quickly if things keep dragging on. When you're on my team, you can go do whatever you want, just don't expect the whole team to wait for it, you can always catch up. That counts for myself as well. Noone has to wait for me. -
Quote:All those problems are solved by reading the pop up. In just about every game I ever played you need to read the stats of an item to know what it does ...We should ask those people who bought GR and will never become 3 month vets what problems they had with DOs and the origin system. They might say the fact you need to click the enhancements in the store and from the menu that pops up click info. That whole process is time consuming and unfun. I'm sure having all the origins in one store is great, but making new players scroll through 10 different sets when there are only 5 origins seems like it creates a waste of time. Do you think new players get mad when they buy a DO they can't even slot? A DO they can't even afford since they don't have enough money to slot everything in the first place?
Enhancements are great, I love the systems the Devs have devolped but you think people having problems with enhancements is cause they can't read. Think for a second how other MMOs use a system where you drag a sword onto a picture of a hand and a pair of boots onto their feet and you're done enhancing. It's a very user friendly system, user friendly stream lines fun. Having to click on items in a crappy UI so you can click again in order to read if you can even slot this item is not maximizing the fun for new players.
Awakening: Endurance Modification
WetWare Eng Hyperkinetic Polymer
Guess which of those is Science?
Which of those two names would be easier for a new player to fiqure out what it does?
I admit that the origin based enhancements are a bit hamfisted and outdated, but I'm still not seeing the huge problem people seem to make of it. -
Quote:Did you follow these instructions? http://boards.cityofheroes.com/announcement.php?f=576&a=16Greetings fellow heroes, villains and rogues alike, now this my first time posting so bare with me here. Ok now I recived the email about beta test for I19 good news there, the question is should it take long for the beta test to be downloaded to you pc and what I mean long I mean 194:16:02 remaining or should it take 2 hours at most. Please keep in mind this is my first time dealing with the beta I usually wait for the issues to release for live servers. Is the time remaining currect or not???
The beta client is the same game, so you're basicly downloading the whole game again. Which, without any problems, should take a few hours of shorter. Now since for you it's apparently showing '194:16:02 remaining' (which is unfortunatly the actual time it is going to take for you) there's obviously a connection issue somewhere.
You can try changing the port the downloader is using to connect to the servers. There's an instruction on how to do that on the NCSoft page in the help/costumer support section. I'm at work so I can't go there or I'd provide a link.
What I would do however is just copy the existing CoH file's content to the one for the test server. Then run the updater (with the -test attachement as shown in the link) and it should just verify all the files, instead of dling the whole thing.
At least that's how I remember doing it a few years back.
As mentioned I'm not at home, or I'd test if it works the way I say first. -
Quote:Exactly. I still can't get past the whole technomagic nonsense explanation for power proliferation. What were they thinking? Why would something like that need an in game explanation? The Origins as written *are* constraining, because it comes with authorial decree. The major NPCs say things like "mutants didn't exist before 1938." Which instantly made my slow-aging 117-year-old mutant non-canon.
Other things, such as NPC Positron's mention of Powerset proliferation, are completely unnecessary. Why does it matter in the game world why powers were shared with different archetypes? That's the equivalent of explaining why we can suddenly color our powers or have kittens on our shoulders. But the main issue from that lies in the fact he claims that even Naturals are affected by Power Proliferation... which changes them from Natural to some sort of silly Magic-Tech hybrid.
As I went through Percy Winkley's arc, I just got more and more annoyed because the writers were constraining us ever more... for no apparent reason. There's no need to explain proliferation because it's just a game mechanic. I was afraid there would be some arc explaining why we can suddenly see shadows after UltraMode was added. It's ridiculous to put limitations on characters' backstories. -
Quote:I really don't see the problems people are having with the SO's ... You can read right? Just hover over the enhancement and read the stats. If someone is new to the game and asked me which origin is best I will tell noobs just don't pick Science. At some point new players are going to have to learn what color enhancements do what, having to do that while dechipering the messed up names science SOs have is cruel.
Back when you had to unlock a contact so you could get access to endmod and travel DO/SOs science contacts made you fight Vahz, which back then had Toxic attacks that didn't have a postional vector attached to the attack. Ranged defense did noting against toxic spit.
I just always pick natural these days. I've been every origin in Paragon and every origin in the Isles, natural stores in my experience are more accessible then other origins. Such as being closer to a trainer. When you could only get one jetpack and you wanted to make that jetpack last as long as possible, the distance between the trainer and your store is an important factor in deciding origin.
I always pick what I feel goes best with the charcters concept. I only picked it once based on 'convenience' and regretted it ever since. (The character's 50 now, so no, i'm not rerolling)

Quote:Origin of Power is a lot worse than CoV ever was. But still not as cringe worthy than the stuff they made up for inventions and especially power diversification. The Origin of Power nonsense was a huge story mistake. Not as big as the terrible choice made when designing CoV's backstory which crams us all into the same railroad tunnel, but it's pretty huge. It puts us in straitjackets and limits our creativity. The only way to deal with it is to ignore it, and that's a shame.

Quote:I really dislike this aspect of comics, that and the constant reboots and alternate universes."Dang," said Superboy, "I forgot that I can move at Faster-Than-Light Speed and could punch Karate Kid 30,000 times a second, even if I were not already invulnerable to any physical attack he could make!"
"Blast," said the Silver Surfer, "I forgot that I can alter my molecular structure to be stronger than hardened steel and unbendable by any human, much less than I can reduce T'Challa to a pile of smoking cinders if I wanted!"
"Tell me about it," murmured Doctor Doom, "I forgot that if the writer wants it, Squirrel Girl will kick your freakin' butt... but, of course, She's Just That Good."
It is enough to make Troy Hickman weep.
Edit: Oh and cross-overs that don't make any sense ... -
Quote:Your beta tester friend needs to relearn his stuff. You don't need to uninstall and redownload anything. Just change your CohUpdater.exe to CoHUpdater.eu.exe and let it verify the files. Should take half an hour max.Any how here whats going on
1: Login to NCsoft Game Account Details page, where after asking for money to play it says would you like to download the game client "o yes please I say nice Mr web site" Gosh it knows im in the EU as I paid all them £s i have been saving from my pocket money to play, £s not $s clever site and as a good and clever site it lets me download the cohupdater.eu insaller so I can get them pesky Pigg files all 3.6gig of them. HAzaaarrr for me soon it will be pow and zap time.
2: It places on the desktop a nice shortcut to the game what fun we are having and starts the game, checks the files and say "hello im the log in screen please login"
3: I pop my login name and password (yes the game ones not the NCsoft ones, and I know the password is right cuz in changed it 3 times.) and the screen says "WRONG!! Fool try again" humm me thinks thats odd.
4: So I call a mate who plays COHVR and tells him what gone one (hes a beta tester and nows his stuff) "haha" he says "this old nut, look at properties under the shortcut and if its says cohupdater.exe and not cohupdater.eu.exe well bless me you have the wrong game Client silly you, Uninstall (windows7) with COHVR initialler and just down load the whole 3.6gig again and this time check its the cohupdater.eu insaller and not the US one" humm "ok I says and so 5.5 hours later done that, but whats this an all new shortcut pointing to yes thats right cohupdater.exe now EU any where!!! Humm could it be I did some things wrong best do this again, so Uninstall with COHVR uninstaller, run CCleaner to clean reg of any traces of COHVR and go v NCsoft website>cohupdater.eu insaller>game
Quote:So My questions are this
1: Who is the moron who came up with the idea of not having a live versification checker on 3.6GIG!!!! of data when its down loaded, really any software that takes that long to download better have good fecking reason why there is not a small code tool to look at the files and say yep 99% good you just need to download X file or y files again and not the WHOLE LOT!!!
Quote:2: Why dos the EU installer keep installing the US game!! Any one?... Any one?... Any one?...
Quote:3: why are there two game clients any how??
Also, being mouthy to people trying to help you isn't the smart thing to do. Just sayin'. -
Quote:DominatorAside from all the web-slinging and multiple uses for spiderwebs Spider-Man uses in comics, games, and movies, what would he be in regards to CoX? I mean, would he be a WP/SS Tanker or IMO, be more of a MA/SR Scrapper? IDK, but it's hard for me to pin him accurately in this game without missing something, you know?
Just wondering. -
Quote:NWN2 might be better than the first, the fact that it is party based is indeed a big plus. But as far as the game itself goes, I wouldn't know.Completely disagree on the NWN front, in terms of campaign they made a much better job of it than Bioware did with the first, I much prefer the second in terms of both campaign and the mechanics they used.
Of course they did do their usual trick of releasing beta software but once patched up it got better (and The Witcher did exactly the same thing, the initial release of that was appallingly buggy and chuggy using the same(ish) engine).
Agreed on KOTOR 2 though. That was really disappointing.
One thing I do love about Obsidian is that they like party based RPGs and their sequels are often more party friendly than the original.
(steakhouse)
You see, I never got al that far. I made 4 seperate attempts to start the game over a period of 2 years after release(so plenty of time to patch). And if it would let me past the starting village at all I'd get stopped a 1-10 gaming hours later by having *all* my save games corrupted. That's not to mention numerous random CTD's, lock ups, unresponsive NPCs, buggy quests and even a freaking blue screen.
One time I loaded my game and noticed that somehow my PCs familiar had actually merged with a party member (the gnomish bard fellow, cba to recall his name). When I say merged, I do mean just that. There was only 1 portrait in my interface (that of the familiar, a weasel I believe), but it had the name of the bard. It could still cast bard spells but had for the rest all the atributes of the familiar. I admit that was funny.
Obsidian is never seeing a penny from me again. -
Oh, I don't know Obsidian managed a pretty good job at it. But they bungled Kotor as well. So I guess they have a special gift.

Quote:Are you angry? You sound angry. Don't be angry! It was the most fitting analogy I could come up with.
It's clear the ideas they start with are good but they are incapable of executing them with anything but the bare minimum.
We don't get cool things like unique Praetorian vehicles or transforming gun turrets because "cool" is the first thing they toss on the cutting room floor. But but they always manage to leave in lots of identical warehouses and empty offices without windows filled with enemies who stand around in neat groups waiting to be methodically cleared.
If you mean a series of square rooms with a metal tile floor texture, no windows or anything to indicate you're in space, we've already got a couple of those. They're very similar to the "under water" Longbow bases which are a series of square rooms with a metal tile floor texture, no windows or anything to indicate you're under water.
But both are nothing like the "Crey labs in the future" which are a series of square rooms with a metal tile floor texture, no windows or anything to indicate you're in another time.
Also, stuff gets cut from games in development all the time. A lot of ideas are found unfeasable/overly ambitious due to time or tech constraints. It is like that everywhere in all development processes, not just games. CoH is no exception to that.
When I read up on some of the things they cut from Baldurs Gate 2 and its expansion I almost wept. So much potential awesome. -
Ugh, Cage's acting in the first film was almost as bad as the digital fire effects ...
And now they're cutting the budget in half? -
-
I sort my characters by level. So everytime one character rises a few levels I have to move all the ones that got passed one spot down. For those of the same level the one that got there first gets the higher spot .

Quote:My favourite game series ever is Baldurs Gate (Especially 2) and my favourite bookseries ever is the Wheel of Time. That should answer your question. So here is my question to you, and those of you who skipped to the end, start reading now: Do you need your games to provide a "complete" experience with trivia, background, secrets and lore, or are you more interested in playing a fun game and following an engaging, but not necessarily plot-heavy story?
So, yes. The more background fluff the better, you can always skip it if you want to. Well done background and lore is more important for my immersion than fancy graphics. Though, of course, I'm not against fancy graphics and a game has to be fun in the first place. A crap game with great lore is just that, a crap game with great lore. -
Quote:Wow ... do you wear a white dress and a pointy hat in your free time?I saw a post here and on Blizzard for people requesting unified play for other regions.
This sounds attractive in theory but is difficult due to a well known problem called latency. I'm bring this up not to support unification but to understand this movement.
Latency is a real issue it reduces the quality of play for everyone involved.
1. I hate having my sessions held up because your almost a day away from me.
2. When companies create regional servers, they feel there is enough business to support it. Play and support your region! Show your intelligence and purchase your regional copy. If I hear another lame excuse like " I accidentally bought a NA edition." I'm going to puke...we can see your through your lies. People are not a dumb as you think. We trained you better than this. Don't embarrass this fine community with your ineptitude.
3. Why would Koreans want to play with NA? I'm just using this as an example. There is a 12 hour difference. I'm getting up, your going to bed.
4. I get plenty of regional spam now on CoH. Why would I want global spam?
Why? Why? Why?
The comment line is now open. -
Man you guys are no fun.
The Youtube comments were much more entertaining.
At least Durakken put some effort in -
I came across this video on Youtube.
An Irish film director stumbled upon what he believes is a women talking on a cell phone in the extra footage from the DVD version of Charlie Chaplin's 'The Circus'. It shows a recording outside the venue where the film premiered. A women is clearly shown talking into a small mobile phone sized device while she passes the camera.

Speculation runs wild over the internet ...
So what do you guys think it really is? -
