  1. I was always partial to plays on words like "Brass Kickers" but let's face it; that won't last very long in-game.

The big question is do we want to have a consolidated origin for the group or is it an all-encompassing "If you're wearing lots of brass and Victorian clothing, join us!" type deal? That'd go a long way in what sort of scope to give the SG name.

(thoughts were an Alien from a very steampunkish type world, an Astronaut from a world that was colonized during the Victorian Era with Steampunk space tech, and some other "Why would these guys be in the modern era" type ideas, but nothing solid yet.
You can really do just about anything. That's the beauty of the genre, really. Depending on that individual's tech level (steampunk tends to deal more with what you can build/maintain rather than what you can buy), he might be anywhere from a regular person with a scrapper set (likely either dual blades or martial arts with the spiffy new brawling-esque animations) to a controller with gravity and force fields via some complicated invention. Hell, steampunk is one of the only times that the old school legacy assault rifle actually fits.

Really, just think of it as a chance to play something new, then think "How can steam make this work?" What if Iron Man ran on a steam engine? Not realistic? Have you ever READ a comic book? Go wild.

PS: Saw a show called Weapon Masters on the Military Channel that basically revolves around a tech guy "remaking" old weapons and trying to improve them. Most of the results are rather steampunkish in spirit, but the two that caught my eye were the hydraulic automatic crossbow (every bit as awesome as it sounds) and the electric version of a flintlock pistol. The pistol had the trigger attached to a wire that sat on the belt and was operated with the OPPOSITE hand as to not affect your aiming. Here's a teaser of that pistol episode, though it's more like a commercial than a clip I'm afraid.
  3. I'm waiting on this one, too. Got a tanker ready and everything (though I still have no idea how to play him properly yet).
  4. I actually made an AE arc that revolves around holy knights, though they're depicted as over-zealous witch hunters who hunt down people they find to be abominations, regardless of however "good" the individual might be. Naturally the player is intended to be said abomination.

That said, I do have a character that'd probably fit in with your idea. I've got a power suit nun. No, really. It's like old school Iron Man, but replace drinking with praying.

Yep, that was you guys. I could tell at least some of you regularly did this, because who the heck pugs like that? It was a bit touch and go, but when that team worked, it did work pretty well.
  7. Spent some of the afternoon watching a brute practically solo 8 man content at +4. Drank while watching that. Passed out and lost a few hours. Created a few highly offensive Sims. Drank more. Don't remember much else after that which kind of tells me I passed out again. Looked up and typed this on the laptop.

    I should probably eat something. I can't keep drinking if I don't.

Seriously, a team of 7 doms should be able to lock down a group of enemies. Unless you're fighting archvillains with the Purple Triangles of Doomâ„¢ up.
Half of them had stone mallets trying to smash them. It got a little bad for a while. They even were beating themselves up over it; it should NOT have been that bad.

Is it the age you judge, or the communication?
...this is a trick question, right? Of course 12 year olds aren't worth it. The only 12 year olds that are worth it are ones related to me but not living near me. I assure they receive the proper exposure to the correct nerd gear to stack the odds of them being worth a damn later on in life.

I want nothing to do with children and will actively hunt/scare them. Depending on the legality of where I'm at, of course.
  10. I was on my thermal corruptor last night and get a tell asking if I was lft. I wasn't flagged, but I figured I could use a break from messing with AE, so I accepted. I fly over to the mission where the other 7 are already in the mission and hop in...

...only to discover that ALL 7 of the others are dominators. Half of them were already dead, the other half were dying. Apparently we were fighting carnies at level 30. Ouch.

So yeah, after the obligatory wipe, I wrangled them all up to slap some shields on them and tried again... For a team with no tanks or dedicated damage, it went pretty well. Still, that's the kind of team that goes 0 to death in less than a second. Especially when a Longbow boss negated the team's confuse attacks.

Either way, it was an interesting experiment. Thank god for the dominator buff a while back.

For some of us, hate isn't a reflex or a response. It's a passion. It's why we get up in the morning. If I didn't have at least a tiny chance of spreading some form of misery, well, I really don't know if I could manage to start my day.
  12. I love English. English is a very nice lady who's been kind to me over the years. She's let me do a lot, not to mention that whole "language is what makes us more than beasts" thing. We owe her a lot.

And you beat her daily with a large spiked club. For no reason.

    You are a monster.

I always thought of maybe being a therapists or psychologist or something of that nature.
Somehow, I get the mental image of a psychologist taking notes with several crayons, all in different colors, alternating them at random with no rhyme or reason.

...guess I'd feel a little more sane after watching that display. You may be onto something here.
  14. I actually heard this from a few people, too. Apparently a few new players, upon their initial login, saw Virtue at 2 dots and Freedom at 1. I have to admit I share the same concerns you do, but hopefully it'll work itself out.

Or maybe it'll go the other way. The newcomers might pick up on the better habits of Virtue players. Or they'll all become ERPers. Either way, good times.
  15. I'd happily help start with something like this. God knows I've got the itch to do something steampunkish these days. Just let me know what AT you're most needing by the looks of things. I've noticed most small SGs tend to be short on healers or tanks, but with a concept like this...who knows.

Wish I could claim that. I totally knew that person was new. I'm a jerk like that. It's how I roll. I'm the type of person who scares small children for fun. I may be somewhat sociopathic now that I think about it.

I uh, also drink. A lot.
  17. First off, I have a feeling this post was aimed at my head like a shoe sailing towards a certain ex-president. I myself am an incredibly abrasive and rude person. I don't sweeten words and often do everything I can to put as much venom in each letter as possible. So for what it's worth, sorry if I hurt your feelings. I still meant every word.

That said, I have a tendency to hate 95% of all people I meet. Don't take it too hard; I'm a total jerk. I could have put all it a lot better. I'm not REALLY apologizing for it, but I'm trying to explain it so it might lessen the impact it apparently had.

You kind of jumped into the middle of an already heated point of disagreement for a lot of people, so that's where most of your aggro came from. Don't worry; people have the attention span of gnats around here. We don't hold grudges (usually).
  18. Like I've said a few times now, I've had nothing but improved AE experiences since I16. I never used to get invitations to legitimate non-farm AE missions until the farm crowd was gone. The regular "as intended" players are finally beginning to return to it. My personal experience has been much better.

Which leads me to wonder why yours hasn't been. The first thing that comes to mind is you're flat out lying about not farming before I16. I honestly think you were. You fit the type from what I've seen. You're new, inconsiderate, and want things how you like them, despite whatever that playstyle was doing to our game. Here's a hint: it was killing it.

The reason I'm riled up is because you're claiming to enjoy something that I do, but you're insisting it's "dying" or "dead" or however you want to put it. AE is healthier now than it was a month ago. It's quieter, but there's a lot less people trying to take advantage of it ever since the kids decided it wasn't worth the effort.

One last note. Don't tell me to re-read what you've already said. The grammar and syntax hasn't improved any since the first time I read it. Half of it is still unreadable, though I do thank you for toning down that font.
  19. Considering you're too lazy to form your own AE teams (not difficult; I've been in more since I16 than before it launched) as well as how inconsiderate you seem to be using that abortion of a font/color choice, let me be the first to say do whatever you want. If you're trying to ask for advice on how to find groups or real content to play through, that's fine. You instead seem to be just whining and insisting that you be allowed to exploit the AE again.

I'll say it again. I've seen FAR more groups make use of the AE than they did before I16. The only thing that's in short supply are farmers and exploiters. That's the only part of AE that's dying, and I'll be the first in line to dig it a shallow grave on the side of the interstate. Further, standard mission groups seem to be even more prevalent than before due to super sidekicking. If you can't be bothered to find a legitimate group, I somehow doubt you were doing anything but jumping on the farm train before I16. Something tells me I'd rather not play with you or your kind anyway.

I'm usually pretty easy-going, but it's literally painful to even look at your post. Worse, the pain of reading it was very much without any reward.

I went back to college a few years ago. During my days there, I got to know the younger generation of nerds and gamers. I found that while they were just about as good as I was in the newer games (Call of Duty, 3d fighters, etc), when we went to a 2d game or a throwback of some sort (side-scrolling shooters, platformers, Street Fighter 4, old school 2d fighters), I was suddenly far better than them.

There's some sort of huge difference in the new and old. Precise timing and bullet hell gameplay isn't rewarded like it used to be. Instead of timing that dragon punch to counter the guy who jumped at you, the newer games tend to reward hours of practicing borderline exploits in order to do five hour long combo strings. You don't need fast precise movements so much as you need "twitch" reflexes to fire at your enemy as soon as possible. The entire concept of bullet hell throws the younger generation of gamers for absolute loops, as evidenced whenever we played Aegis Wing, a VERY VERY easy (compared to old school) side scrolling shooter on xbox live.

Sure, I kinda sound like grandpa gamer over here, but the kids today seem to have been brought up on entirely different mechanics than the older gamers were. They aren't necessarily worse, they're just not as exposed to a variety of gameplay as some of us. Hopefully retro gaming enjoys resurgences often enough to let them in on what they missed, though.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Christ, even back when I was a kid and didn't beat but maybe 1 out of 10 games that I played, that one stood out. I didn't even get far enough that I could say I properly enjoyed the game, but I never actually owned a copy of that, so maybe I just needed practice... Then again, a quick look at Wikipedia tells me that even Captain N himself claimed he could never beat that game. Captain freakin' N, man.

Really, almost every game reviewed by the Angry Video Game Nerd tends to fall into the "unfairly and unfunly difficult" category.

Then there's always games like this.
  22. I understand the jist of what you're saying, but it's hardly appropriate to say the entire AE has been "gutted." Quite a bit of the actual complete content that was made for AE is perfectly playable with zero changes. Others need a bit of tweaking. Either way, it isn't as if AE were hit with a blanket nerf of all exp and rewards. It's still perfectly viable so long as the content you play was built properly.

People knew this change was coming and they had plenty of time to make changes to any content of theirs that would be affected. If they didn't, they probably were looking to pick a fight anyway. I didn't, but that's because I'm lazy. And a drunk. Take your pick.

AE tickets are still easy to obtain, they still provide a great reward, AE is still very much in tact. Before I16, I never saw anyone playing legitimate AE content. Since I16, I have. That's all that really matters to me. Teams who play legitimate I16 content are now in the forefront, even if it's a very small community as it is. The only reason for that is because AE garnered such a negative connotation to it that people abandoned it in droves when the profiteers rushed in. It'll restore itself.

And I actually agree that over time, the changes may be lessened. However, I think that a very drastic and dramatic change WAS warranted. Now's the recovery time after the surgery, and I personally can report positive changes already.

Ok, I must have missed the part in the patch notes where ALL custom groups were nerfed. As far as I understand it, a custom group simply must be, well, COMPLETE in order to gain full benefits from it. Is that really so much to ask? Is it that hard to scratch out a couple more enemy types for a group?

I have a mission that's affected by it, too. Basically, the idea is that for the final mission, the opposite of a gate to hell gets opened and abnormally powerful enemies swarm out, which results in gameplay as a minion-less group of enemies. It's by no means a farm, since you have to go through several other missions to get to this part, but it's my understanding it got affected too...

...so it's up to me to flesh out the rest of this custom group. Sure, I'd rather I didn't have to do it, but it's a very very small price to pay for an AE system that's not 24/7 powerleveling. I will put up with the inconvenience of creating more content (oh no!) so I don't have to constantly say "Anyone doing any NON farm AE missions?" only to get a bunch of farm team invites anyway.

Really, a feature like this in most games would be loved even if it gave no rewards whatsoever. Self expression and the ability to peruse the creative content of others is something that MMO players always love, but god forbid you deny someone the ability to powerlevel in a two block radius (or however far it was between AE and Ms Liberty) for the entire game.

Hell, you can still do that, you just have to play real content now. I16 is forcing you to play a better game. You're welcome.
  24. It's pretty telltale due to how quickly it died. Just goes to show that when 95% of the crowd disappears, 95% of the crowd was blatantly farming and trying their damnedest to skip as much content as possible, rather than experience alternative player-made content.

I'm disappointed in the players more than anything. Is it so hard to play through something interesting instead of a bunch of bosses named in all caps and on the same outdoor map day in and day out?

If people "quit" AE due to the changes, they didn't belong in it anyway. Get out of my way so we can try and make a real AE community for once.
  25. The only way for these reviews to get better would be to video capture them and narrate them Angry Video Game Nerd style.
