The "collectible" genre of toys has always been pretty sad. Unfortunately not as sad as the populous that repeatedly falls for it.

I also attributed much of the design to the classic superhero look. Though I would've preferred to make it possible to make girls that are smaller in one place and bigger in another, at least it's easily possible to make a character who is modest.

You can't even go for a hike in B&S without it looking like a catwalk at a fashion show.

Yeah, heh there's a few things in this video that I still haven't been able to reverse-engineer in my head.

Very impressive. I partially agree with some of the sentiment here though. Shoulda gone with the original classic song.

Though, I'm sure there'd be players going "But you you're .02% better and that means gimped if you don't"
That garbage will happen in any game that has stats. If it wasn't bickering about houses, they'd be bickering about wands, which CANONically have affinities for different kinds of spells. And any other rare item in the game that you can get.

Just imagine the real story as an MMO for a moment and imagine a player argument about Time Turners, Liquid Luck, Invisibility Cloaks, the Marauder's Map, etc.

You have to have the fractions, but really, they could have all the skills be the same for every fraction. No need for special skills if you're this group or that group.

All work together while working against each other

Possibly have some big bad who can bring Voldermort back!
If Voldemort comes back, that can be one of the epic pieces of content that calls for co-op zones where the factions can work together.

Keep the faction-unique powers out of it as well. Though affinities for certain things should perhaps be kept in. If they go with a Hogwarts-based game, the personality traits the sorting hat uses for assigning students to houses would provide some nice modifiers for base stats.

Truthfully though, in my experience this is just popular in MMOs period :/ I was in TOR (I can make a Chiss Force User now...^_^ So, you know, it's worth playing for me now) and just standing around in the Catina in a popular enough area I sighed to myself.

Not that I'm not used to it, but I just wasn't expecting it. I guess I should have. Slave Leia after all.
Mos Eisley cantina in SWG was pretty infamous as well. Star Wars, having the Twileks who were pretty much created just so the women could be sex objects (and the Zeltrons if you count stuff in the tabletop RPG - perversion is pretty much a religion for them) But I think it goes without saying that the more you use sex to sell your product, the higher percentage of those types of people you're likely to wind up with playing your game.

I dont mind the pony pics. Takes a bit out of the monot. of the recent usual topics.
Well, to be fair, hope is at least in the title of the thread. I don't see any point in bickering hope, religion, etc further. I think a lot of us have said everything we need/want to about it and are more than happy to move onto something else.

Such as the Alcubierre, which I just remembered I didn't follow-up on. This article is why I figured it was a NASA project. http://techland.time.com/2012/09/19/...ht-warp-drive/

I wouldn't have mentioned it all if someone wasn't trying to (speaking of religious/political discussions...) rewrite history.

Yeah... probably best to get as far from the Harry era as possible.

And if they want multiple factions, the "bad guy" can just someone with a different viewpoint instead of a devil character. Might have a better chance at not having horrid faction imbalances that way, and nobody going around acting like they already know the end because "The horde is supposed to lose!"

They couldn't counter the points being made so they trotted out the most inflamatory stuff they could find all the while calling other people Trolls.
Typical propaganda from someone accusing people of propaganda.

The thread was not about why the game died. It deviated from the original topic of giving up, to whether or not people have a right to have hope. And then hope was compared to religion. And since the people it was coming from see religion as something that is only meant for cro-magnon men and children who believe in Santa, hoping for the game to survive was labelled as being equally misplaced. And that is how it became about religion.

The pony thing though... someone was spamming ponies on pretty much every thread, at least for a while.

The 'conclusions' of the thread as you say, boil down to the same 3 or 4 people who have been making the same arguments in every thread. That you're now gloating and trying to claim victory just proves how much of a troll you are, in that you are only arguing in these threads to win. Whether you care about the topic or not is obviously secondary.

It's also funny that you chose to single me out. Do you ever have a target that you stick with, or do you change your mind on who is the lord of Titan evil on a daily basis?

And to the other 3 or 4, aside from A_F, this is not directed at you. The only one who has truly proven themselves to be a troll is A_F.

Yeah that's what I mean. Not bookish enough according to her. Though after trying Pottermore, that only seemed like a metagame grind, and the only objective I found was winning points for your House.

As much as I would love that, I am NEVER playing an MMO again based on an IP that the developer doesn't have the rights to. Outrageous licensing fees just make the profit demands on the game even harder to achieve.

  19. So, the Rikti are invading as an end-game thing... you're looking for RADAR blips, naval ships... Rihanna had better not be in this.

And speaking of subs, isn't there a 007-style submarine dock hidden in a mountain that has a bunch of control consoles on the platforms? It wasn't a signature arc either, but it's been forever since I've seen it.

I think ponies and religion kinda go hand-in-hand these days, and occasionally have makeover slumber parties.
  21. Alternatively just go to Google News or your search engine of choice, after Dec 1, set the date range to the past week, and see what comes up. If anything genuinely interesting happens post-apocalypse, it'll show up there. And if anything REALLY interesting happens, you probably won't even have to go looking for it. It'll find you.

Absolutely. I may have a slightly jaded view on that though. I was in SWG when the biggest example of why NOT to care about what other games are doing, hit the fan. The NGE, which is STILL the biggest stain for SOE (and possible for ANY MMO developer), was an attempt at reinventing the game to make it more competitive against WoW. And how did they plan on doing that? What else? By trying to clone it.

Half of the innovations that made the game stand out, were scrapped in favor of copying WoW, including some of the mistakes.

    Quote:
I think there are plenty of people that is out there that want something different than the usual WoW like games. On average, mention MMO to anyone and first game they usually think of is WoW, even though WoW didnt coin the term and wasnt even the first. Secodn in line is Everquest, if not WoW is not mentioned. Take those two then a lot of times it's blank stares as if they dotn realize there are others.
I know there are, but that doesn't mean much of anything from a business standpoint. The same problem exists in Hollywood. "Inception" is an example of a movie that tried to avoid the typical formulas. Christopher Nolan was only finally able to get it funded though as a deal sweetener tied in with the Dark Knight series. Nobody had any confidence in it. It demanded a lot of brain-power from the audience to even understand half of it, making it a "poor bet." The film still made over 800M though, which is nothing to scoff at, especially for a film targeted at a niche genre that didn't even have any random/pointless sex appeal to get the pervs to buy tickets. But it still didn't change anything. Everything went back to business as usual. Sure, anyone else can make a sci-fi movie, but if they want funding for it, they need to pathetically tie it in with a famous board game and have Rihanna star in it. Who cares if she's never acted before? She's hot, so people will go see it, right?

    Quote:
I think even a small game can be a success, even with 800 people playing if the cost to make that game run is on scale with 800 people. While it sounds good to spend millions and millions on updates for a game, staff and stuff to keep a game running, but if the game is only bringing in a few thousand subs, then maybe a cutback in staff and running costs is in order and when setting up a game, especially one that is in an untested market, or niche market, then the ability to adjust is a wise move.
Indeed. The huge investments being made in MMO's these days don't seem to ever pay off. Whether this is just a WoW issue or not, I don't know. EA seemed convinced though that just by spending more money than Blizzard did, they'd be able to take the crown. Of course, also their definition of an innovative MMO, was cutscenes that had voiceovers, even though other MMO's have already done it.

    Quote:
Many niche market items dont sell much but is still considered a success while many niche market items are considered basically failures although they havea solid fan base. Corvette, or sports cars in general are considered a niche market, but still the Corvette is considered a success. Do it make sense, not much trunk space, cant carry more than one, big engine, ride stifffer than an old fashioned wash board although better than most sports cars, and a top speed where there is nowere to really test it out or land you with a big ticket or jail. Yet people buy it. On the other hand the Delorean, most people heard of it, but is considered a relative automotive failure although they still demand a pretty penny as a collection item and have die hard fans and it was unique in many ways. Or as GM said wit hkilling off the Eldorado, personal luxury coupes are niche and isnt selling well now, yet MBZ CL-class is said to be doing well for their range, BMW 6-series two door is not considered a failure but this just points that success also depends on who is asked what they consider success and their opinion. A failure in one eyes is a success in another and that is why sometimes, especially when a product is killed off, it seems a product that seems to be doing well is knocked off while other products that seem to be doing worse is still kicking.

Interesting thing too about the Delorean. http://delorean.com/sales/

Though I suppose it's anyone's guess at how popular the Delorean would be now if it weren't for one iconic piece of advertising courtesy of Universal Pictures.

Cars may not fit as well into what we're discussing though because they're a status symbol that you can easily flash around in public. Cars even fit into humanity's version of the peacock mating dance. One can easily think that a Corvette, not only by being an eye-grabber, but also by being known for a bank-breaker, will immediately tell everyone in your vicinity something about you. Our choices in entertainment aren't really capable of that, and certainly not our choice of MMO.

This is the problem of corporations.

If CoH was run by a small unit of about 40 staff in a less expensive location it'd probably be doing really nicely and making that management team a good living.
About the location and the staffing, maybe it would, maybe not. But I wholeheartedly agree with the shareholder comment though. If you're someone who cares about what you're doing, and not just involved to get rich, don't ever go public. Going public just begs the world of investors to turn you into a clone.

If a game today had 200k subs, that would be considered niche. Pre-WoW, that would be considered a smash hit.
