I'm not fond of the background at all, but man, the character rocks. It's simple little tweaks, but it looks very nifty. Even has a bit of cel-shading on him (and I'm a sucker for cel-shading).
I'd suggest to change the background, make it more dark, don't have the lightning have this way overdone glow, filling the background. Heck, maybe you can take a screencap of a town from the sky and add that in as well. -
Seriously, did you hand out the first prize to that character because of the chest size? Not to sound degrading to anyone, but it doesn't really look like a very well made up costume, or very original.
Check the last picture..there's a freaking Irishman in there! If that isn't original I don't know what is.
Still, congratulations to the winners :P Just something I noticed. Not trying to be bitchy or anything! Also, I love it how you organized this. Stuff like this is what keeps the game interesting for alot of people. -
Ultimate DEFIANTS is a very new SG, which consists out of me and my brother's alts so far. To be honest, we have nothing to offer you, seeing as we are so small. Still, if we are to change that we are looking for new members.
Our main goal is just to have fun. With friends not just in the SG but also out there, there's always a way to get teaming and doing missions.
So if you like help out getting a SG started up, I'd love to invite you! -
Good job BB. Good to see you guys nailed it after all.
There seemed to have been a bit of a misunderstanding in the team however, in which my silly idea was being interpreted as being sarcastic or harsh. I wasn't trying to though, so I hope no feelings were hurt.
Just saying. Had a good time the whole time, even though I ended up getting very owned by vine traps all the time. -
Doesn't he have a pig nose? I remember he's portrayed as having one on all of the official renders from the game.
On one of the comic covers, he does seem to have a human nose, but it's not that rare there's mistakes in the comics. I reckon the person who drew it wasn't able to tell the nose from the reference material and drew a human nose.
Similiar things in the comics are the changing of Statesman's looks. In the first promo comic, he had a helmet instead of a faceplate, and no mask. Later on, he had the faceplat but no mask around his eyes. I also remember him having blonde/brownish hair in the story arc where all the heroes lose powers, even though in the game (in the CoH trailer, as well as in the art collection book) it is shown Statesman has black hair. -

hey.. Hey! HEY!
Don't write manga off this way! o_O;
Theoretically, manga styled art could require even more effort and work than comic art. The link between life drawing and manga is much, much far apart than life drawing and comics.
Therefor, to create a proper manga styled character could use more thought and practice.
The "study" of Japanese style from life to manga, would, in a nutshell, look like this:
Real life ---> exagerated ---> reduced back to simple lines
This is why "cool kids that can draw" tries to head this way first before properly studying art, because it looks simple.
Side note:
Sure it's "in" since it boomed in europe through the 80's-90's, then catching on in the States, but it was there way before that and had the same status for Japanese kids as comics had for American kids.
It goes way way back (1760-1849).
Even if the current generic manga style has evolved into a commercial "big eyes, big bewbs" status, so has the comics now.
Overused? possibly. Overrated? ... Ever seen the lineart of Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita). This guy knows how to draw.
Scarlette: Nice tips!

Sorry, I didn't make my point clear enough. You are right that manga isn't a 'lesser' style, and even in manga there is tons of variatons, and yes, there is some crazy **** out there that's truly beautiful.
I was talking about the fact that kids that want to draw just start with the basic Dragon Ball Z or whatever program is on Fox nowadays and never grow out of it (or it takes a long time for them). Alot of these people I've talked to say that everything that is not manga sucks, which really pisses me off, seeing as they're drawing the most common, hideous and unoriginal style of manga. -
That, and manga is overrated. Every cool kid that can draw tries manga nowadays. Most of them think it's some sort of 'better' artform.
There is so much styles in the world, don't be afraid to try out different stuff until you find what you like. And even if you find that, don't stick to it 24/7. -
Swissy wins the thread with almighty knowledge. Listen to Swissy, everyone.

Try building up your character out of skeletons/stick figures first. Then it's much easier to see if the proportions are right. After that, fill it up with circles and ovals, and finally, fix the circles and ovals to become body parts.
That way it's much easier to determine the proportions of a character.
My other advice (unfortunately for you :P) is practicing. ALOT. Sketching, sketching, sketching! Like any hobby, you can't expect to become good if you don't practice.
Good luck! -
Reminds me alot of the Superman Returns poster..which was very nice IMO. Great job on presenting this poster 'epic' again, like last time. You really seem to have the hang of that!
-
Like the poster! I have some small critism, though. I'll just go ahead and think out loud, you might find it useful, or maybe not. You decide.
The slogan doesn't make sense to me. "Skin of steel, man of heart.", to me, looks incorrect (since Skin is equal to Man here and Steel to Heart). I'd change it to "Skin of steel, heart of man." It's the opposite, but it makes sense much more.
Second, as a very, very, very, very small complaint,I'm doubting the picture's style. The pose is great, and the filter you let loose on the picture is great as well, but I can't help but think it's just an edited screenshot. However, as an edited screenshot, it REALLY gets the job done and there is no way you should not be proud of your creation.
It's very epic, really. Did you consider printing it out in poster-format for your bedroom? -
Sorry for the double post, but I reckon it's allowed seeing the timespan (that, and I don't seem to be able to edit my previous posts?)
Anyway, any else have something to say? I didn't exactly create this for my own viewing pleasure..I'd *really* love some critis on what's good/not good.
I'll add the clean version without all the logos and barcodes, to give this post some more purpose...

It's a fake one. Like I said, it's a fake cover, so I added a barcode so it looks like it could appear in a comic shop like that.
-
...by moi. I have been working on this hard, only to find out that the boards were gone when I wanted to post it.
So anyway, without further ado, this is what I made. It's a fake cover for a possible CoV comic. Tell me what you like/dislike. Constructive critism is welcome!

You can do anything you want with your char except make money of of it. If oyu start to make money with your character in or outside the game then you're infringing the Publisher's rights. In other words: If you make drawing from CoH chars for a living it's fine. If you make drawings of COX chars and then decide to make a TV show starring this char, you're in trouble. Like was said above, it's the quantity that matters here. If you make pictures on demand thats no biggie, but when you mass-produce ingame stuff without telling Cryptic or NCsoft you will get sued.
If i post some screenshots, would you make me a nice drawing swissy? Pretty please?
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I don't think that it means what you said. Commercial work is payed work, so if you're not allowed to go commercial, you're not allowed to make money off of it. As said, doing fan sites and other fan-thingies are free and do not fall under this kind of work.
That being said, I don't think NCsoft or anyone can take you to court for drawing your character. Remember that you just create what you have in your mind in their game, so they can't really do anything outside of the game unless they can show that you stole stuff from the game. Hence the part about fan sites and fictions: since it will most likely include names and characters (fanfic) or screenshots and sounds (fan site) from the game , you would infringe the copyright of the game. However, by drawing a superhero who happens to have a 'belt' or a 'jacket', you wouldn't (unless, of course, you make him fight CoX villains, set him in CoX scenery or give him CoX attributes - think Arachnos logos or whatever). -
Whoah..that is a really awesome site!
I can't really help you out, though. I won't be able to draw THIS good, and my coloring isn't quite that advanced either. Also note that there goes an incredible amount of time into such drawings, hence why he's asking money for it: it's a real illustrating job! -
Thanks for the post, RF! I'm going to wait up and see what other people have to say, but you really helped out.
My villain character on Defiant is Tiltside, my hero character on Defiant is Stillframe, but I've been playing with Tiltside far more often. -
Hello everyone on Union!
I've been playing City Of.. for a couple of weeks now, but whenever I play I find myself being bored by it very quickly. This has alot to do with the amount of interactivity in the game..most of the time I'm running through it all by myself, doing tedious after tedious mission.
I've got a couple of friends on my list but they don't seem to get online that often..heck, most of them have never come online after we've met!
I currently only have characters on Defiant, so now I'm turning to you Union guys for some help and advice. Can you tell me what the difference is between Defiant and Union..
Is it more crowded? (the server load for all servers shows up as 'light' to me, but that doesn't mean there's the same amount of people..)
Are the people friendlier to hang around with?
Are cool things organized?
I really hope you can help me out here. I would love to get the most out of my game. I really like it, but I'm afraid I'll quit playing it if it keeps being so lonely and boring!
Thanks in advance!
edit: seems there's a special board for players' questions, sorry about posting it here. Still, seeing as this is the Union board, hope it won't really matter. -
I'm all for it. I'm trusting on you guys to pick a spot, of course it would be best to pick a spot that's accessible to lower levels (so many villains can join), as well as one that is a special landmark.
How about the Arachnos building in Marconeville?
