Simple: use the already-present "aggro" mechanics instead of a supplementary and overriding mechanic. If Tankers need to grab aggro, let them do it the sensible way: by being a threat. If this is not possible, it's a problem with the AT design.
[/ QUOTE ]
Um, so this would correspond, using the given aggro mechanics, to the tank doing enough damage to pull aggro from a blaster. Which would mean he'd have to do _more_ damage than a blaster.
At which point, why play a blaster?
[/ QUOTE ]
It's not my fault that the CoH archetypes are flawed.
The "Tankers" in comics are the Scrappers. There are few Blasters who aren't gifted with some kind of defensive ability in comics. Defenders are generally Controllers, and the "Scrapper" types often operate more like Stalkers with better defenses.
In the system we currently have, however, people have offered suggestions like giving Tanks extra damage against enemies that aren't paying attention to them (or "aggroed" on them). That would give them situationally high damage allowing them to steal aggro and retain it if they kept up the damage.
Blasters need a buff, anyway, in my opinion, so I figure they've got issues of their own anyway. -

I won't say that it's a perfect fit for everyone, or that everyone should like it. But I do believe that it does what it's supposed to do, when it's supposed to do it. Comics aside(not dismissively mind you), the role of the tank in CoH is an aggro controller. Gauntlet supports that role, and it does it quite well, with no real weighted disadvantages to the tank or the team. The mechanics of gauntlet I find faultless. Hit mob, aggro mob. Lead into a spawn, aggro spawn. Hit a few, and you've got their attention so the team can do it's thing.
It may not be suited for certain peoples playstyle, or people may find it unpalatable, but that holds true for each inherent.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, aside from the fact that, as you say, it's a good mechanic "comics aside", I would disagree that it's good based on a few key issues:
1. It doesn't make "sense" for enemies to ignore higher-damaging opponents simply because one arbitrarily has more threat.
2. The underlying taunt mechanic is far too simplistic. Well, binary is more accurate. This, however, is a fault of the entire status effect system, so I can't say that it's something wrong with Gauntlet itself. -
Also: character bios updated!
For those that may want to do trades, just pick a character out that I posted and get going! -
Where is Slate? WEEPWEEPWEEP!

[ QUOTE ]
Hrm, Gauntlet
Does it support the tanks role (that role being aggro management, not damage output)?
Yes.
Does it require the tank to be near death to use?
No.
Does it require other teammates to be near death to use?
No.
Does it require constant micromanagement to use?
No.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, sometimes it does.
[ QUOTE ]
Does it perform within the stated description?
Yes.
Is it useful solo?
No.
Is it a hindrance solo?
No.
[/ QUOTE ]
It can be. It's possible to get more aggro than you want, particularly at low levels, due to Gauntlet.
[ QUOTE ]
Does it require the tank to actively participate in order to gain it's benefits?
Yes.
Does it burn endurance?
No.
[/ QUOTE ]
It does, in the sense that you must attack to use it.
[ QUOTE ]
Can it be altered by the player to enhance it's effectiveness?
Yes.
Does the use of gauntlet change the risk vs reward scheme?
No.
Sounds like it was well designed to me.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're right. It WAS well designed. Unfortunately, they changed the design of the Tank subsequently, making it less of a glorious fit.
Personally, I find Gauntlet completely uncomic-booky, and dislike that it uses the overly-simplistic taunt mechanics.
Of course, I also think being an aggro manager is an appalling way for the Thing and Colossus analogues of the game to spend their time. I mean, really, imagine ol' Ben Grimm saying, "It's clobberin' time!" and then spending his time dealing out a few weakass punches and taunting... -
The new Foo avatar was custom-altered by me! Mr. Slate is looking mighty Hulk-ish!

I was trying not to reference any of that EU jibberjabber
[/ QUOTE ]
leave the EU alone i actually like as do most other fans. I feel that the star wars universe is boring and not very fun if you take the EU out of it. And if you claim to being a star wars fan please dont tell me all you do is watch the movies. i am a star wars fan and i barely watch the movies. so keep your mouth shout about the EU.
[/ QUOTE ]
What did I say about the quality of the EU?
And for that matter, did the EU somehow reference nerfherders before TESB?
[ QUOTE ]
And btw if it originated in the movies that makes from the movies. Examples gundarks nerfs star destroyers the death star that creepy guy with one eye in rotj. Quinlan vos Aayla Secura arent from the movies but people thaught that they were so awsome that they put them in the movies. well you can see quinlan vos in episode 1. he is identified in a later comic book when aayla mentions they were on tatooine when they were stranded.
dont insult the EU

You realize that pretty much anything that makes a decision over at Cryptic is human right?
[/ QUOTE ]
Sure. But I also understand what a QA department is responsible for. They are the gateway between development and release. They are solely responsible for deciding if something warrants release. And they are responsible for the overall quality of their product. If the product has problems when it goes out the door, then they missed it in their testing. This is true for any product.
[ QUOTE ]
And that they are not held to Telecommunication market standards because they are not part of the information relay to emergency sytems, right?
[/ QUOTE ]
CoX is a service. People pay for that service. The people who pay for that service have a right to quality of service. That is the responsibility of the QA dept for the service. If they're not up to the task and don't understand their product enough to perform the task then they should find something else to do with their time.
However, and let me state, I'm not saying the QA dept can't do their job. I'm saying that it is their job. And that I believe that if they are as properly dedicated to their product as a QA person needs to be successful at their job, then they can perform their job.
The people saying they can't do their job are the ones who are saying every little change needs a week or three on test for the players to vet before it hits the live servers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wait. So you're saying the Q for "Quality" in QA is meant to be taken seriously!?!?!?!/111!??!retraintheQAdepartment!1?!/!? -
Not that I'm aware of, no, but feel free to show up. I'll be wearing a red rose in my lapel, and will be dressed like a duck. Orlando beware!
-
O YA. That reminds me.
Attention throngs of fans, well-wishers, and art-traders: I'm going on vacation Thursday - Tuesday, so I probably won't be checking in that much, if at all. So you can do art and stack them up for me when I return, but I probably won't get around to reciprocating until I'm back!
Thanks! -
