Here is how I look at it.
Black
Gold
White
Grey
These 4 colors are "accents".. these are the only colors which can easily be added in with 2-3 other colors and not look terrible (if done right).
When applying accents, keep the additions balanced over the entire toon. Meaning, if you give a character black boots..then you need some black on his upper torso..either his gloves, shoulders, or chest detail.
A "good" costume CAN be made with 2 colors..but 99% of the time, 2 color costumes will not catch the eye. Ive never seen a GREAT costume that only used 2 colors.
3 colors is required to make a truly unique costume. My advice would be to decide on one color before hand, and then decide on the accent that you will use with it (black, gold, white, or gray)..create your costume, then apply the 2colors to it and fiddle with your 3rd color till you find one that stands out to you as cool looking.
Then there is the dreaded "4th color". It is possible, and even cool looking, when done right. One of the best costumes ive ever made was a 4 color scheme. The trick to using a 4th color though, is to apply it to only ONE area..and it has to be a noticeable one. My favorite spot is the head, but the chest and belt are also possibilities. Also, it can be applied to a cybernetic arm, or arms...or a cape.
Another tip...when you are choosing the color for "tights"..go with dark shades. Instead of red, go with burgundy..instead of blue, go with midnight blue. Darker shades on tights tend to look more classy. On metal, lighter shades bring out the shine, and detail, of the armor piece it is applied to.
As always though.. it doesnt matter what advice I give, there are always examples of great costumes that will completely contradict what I say. Its a testament to the awesomeness of the character creator..if there is no set guideline.. use your imagination and put some effort in to it..and you can make anything look great. -
Awesome! Glad I could help..and I like what you did with it.

Well, I dunno if you will like it or not but I do
. Its a blend of Golden Age and Modern Age.. I didnt give her the supernatural face because..well..I didnt think it looked right and forgot the she was blind
.
One thing id change is the color of the studs on the belt. Id make em white to match the buttons on her jacket.

Ive always wondered about the price range of commissions?
Ive been wanting to get someone to draw The Crown for a while, but I dont want to just ASK someone to do it, cause, well... as someone with very little free time myself, I dont want to ask someone else to use thier free time on meheh..if that makes sense.
So ive been considering commissioning an artist, but ive blown it off cause I really dont think I should be spending money on something like thathehe,.. but im interested in knowing the price ranges, just to make sure

Just thought I'd mention this bit for clarity: the powers-that-be frown on any specific mention of commission pricing in a thread, so we don't discuss actual pricing here. For specifics on commission pricing either ask via PM's or on an artist's outside website.

Good to know.. thanks for the heads up.

Wow...that is really impressive Sorah. Professional quality stuff. Heck..thats better than alot of stuff I see from comic book artists that make a living doing it.
-
Thats awesome
.. I love the way ya colored it.
Great job! -
For some reason that made a big difference for me Powerforge
.. very cool looking.

Here is a look at my own artistic rendition of The Godbreaker (using the battle kilt).
Powerforge, you said you like your current costume and that is all that matters..long as you like looking at it, its good imo.
But here is what I threw together. Im not sure I like this one a whole helluvalot either to be honest. I think the COH character generator just doesnt give the options that id like to have to make a really cool looking egyptian statue turned god killing golem.
Godbreaker by Crown -
Well I took a few screenshots on the maximum settings that my video card allows. I dunno if its just that my card isnt uber, or what..but I dont see a huge difference personally. Its less blurry and I dont get the odd "border" around my chest emblem when i get too close.. but other than that, its pretty close imo.
Course..I dunno if someone with some hellacious card couldnt make it look "omg fantastic".
But here is the Crown on higher graphical settings, since people were asking for it
Crown in threeeeeeeeedeeeeeeeeeee
P.S. It probably doesnt help that im converting the screenshots into MSPaint and hosting it on imageshack either. -
Ill be honest with you, the concept itself deserves a rating somewhere above A+.. I dunno what.. A$ or A! perhaps. Awesome stuff.
The costume however...just doesnt do it for me. -
I had actually taken a few screenshots of me on my throne when I took the screenshots up above.. but I didnt include them cause it didnt show off the costume much, and I was trying to show detail since I was asking for help with an avatar.
The Crown's Throne -
Ive done it a few times in the past Kheprera, but I am just too lazy to do it again
.. ive got a "sweet spot" with my graphics. A balance that I like.. and when i go fiddling with it.. I inevitably end up forgetting to change something back, and then I wonder why im clipping etc..etc..etc..
Of course I could fix that by just writing down my settings and such.
I guess the point im getting at is that im lazy and my settings are not so terrible that they made the screenshots look bad -
Yah I lost all my screenshots of the Rikti Invasion from beta. Had some great ones too.
-
Hah
.. Im on Virtue.
Yah I thought about taking it at max settings, but then I have to go back and turn them all down and such :P.
I dont care how nice your computer is.. flying into Atlas on Virtue during peak hours is a slide show..every time. -
Id love to see it Xertul.. if ever you decide you have the time, you definatly have my blessing
And Happy Birthday! -
That is awesome Turbo_Ski!
..I love how you did the Crown. Shame that a crown like that isnt a costume option hehe.

I always get jealous of the guys in simple costumes
I suck at making simple, classic costumes. Every time I try...I end up throwing a little bit extra in, thinking it needs a bit more to make it unique, and it ruins the look.
Like your Captain Cosmic, id have a hard time making that character without throwing in some shoulder pads and some big flashy boots...not to mention a mask and such.
I just cant do simple -
Thanks guys
..those will do in a pinch. Maybe some day ill be able to create a nifty animated one, or possibly even get an artist here to do a redition of the character for me.
Appreciate it! (and thanks for the costume compliments as well) -
I was wondering if anyone out there felt up to making me an avatar. I personally dont have the knowhow or program(s) needed to do it. Plus, I have nowhere to host it :P.
I am looking to get a unique avatar so that I can see where my posts are when im scrolling through a thread.
Anyway, I just thought id ask since ive seen some nice avatars here.
Here is my character. Grav/Storm controller.

1) It is a temporary power from an invention.
2) Its a custom picture to hide the spines and show off the samurai armor.
3) Its a bug
4) Limited power customization. The ability to suppress certain graphics.

5) It's a screen shot taken from a testing build of the game, and the spines power animations in that build were a bit bugged.
Since these screen shots are of up-coming changes, they are almost guaranteed to be from an internal testing build. We know that there's been a lot of animation work going on (check the dev digest). From there, it's reasonable to conclude that some work-in-progress was interfering with part of spine's animation when these screen shots were taken. I doubt the person who took the screen shot was familiar enough with spines to even notice the animation bug, and even if that person were, he or she no doubt had better things to do than agonize over a small "I'm sure no one will notice it" animation bug.

My #3 says "its a bug".. so we dont need a #5 saying the same thing. I also explained why it most likely is not a bug. -
ahhh.. those are a couple of interesting possibilities as well LiquidX.
-
It aint a new powerset, and it aint a nemisis staff, and it aint a redo of the spines set.
That only leaves a couple options.
1) It is a temporary power from an invention.
I would be a bit disappointed in this option. Unless im a spines scrapper.. why would I want a huge bone to come out of my hand? Id expect invention temp powers to be more technological than mutant.
2) Its a custom picture to hide the spines and show off the samurai armor.
I find this one to be very unlikely.. mostly because Samurai armor is nothing new, so why go to the trouble of showing it off in an I9 screen? Also, it isnt common practice to alter powers and make them look different for a screenshot promoting the game.. that is just bad advertising. It gets the community in a frenzy (see: this post) for no reason..and just lets them down in the end.
3) Its a bug
Also very unlikely. You dont send bugged screenshots to promote your game either.
4) Limited power customization. The ability to suppress certain graphics.
Highly unlikely. Way too much work id think.. they wouldnt keep that secret..it would be one of the main selling points.
I cant think of any other possibilities.. which means that the temp power is the most likely answer. Blech.
I was really hoping for a rework of the spines powerset. Ive always loved the powers, hated the look. I was starting to get excited about the possibility of making a spine scrapper. -
I date back to DOS.. but im not as old as yall
.
I still have my "geez am I that old?" moments though.
