Propel does currently do very similar damage to a blaster snipe, comparing damage per activation and assuming you're hitting a contained target. (32.44 vs. 35.36 comparing unslotted level 50 propel to ranged shot, for those who like real numbers).

Unfortunately snipes are horrifically underpowered for their activation times. If it had the same damage per activation as blazing arrow, say, it would do two and a half times its current damage and rock in at a very respectable 81.67 DPA.

That might be a bit excessive, but bear in mind we're comparing controller's ideal situation (contained target) and the blaster's worst case scenario (no defiance). Even making propel do damage equivalent to a defender's blazing arrow (or whatever other heavy ranged attack you choose) would mean virtually doubling its damage (defender DPA 61.36).

As far as I'm aware damage per activation was never a consideration in historical power design. I'm not even sure it is now, although I sincerely hope it is. Just normalising snipes to tier 1/2 DPA levels would be a major improvement, but that's going off on a tangent.

PS - the above figures use arcanatime activation times

Any care to share their thoughts?
One of the only two characters I've played to 50 is a gravity controller, and there's much I love about the set. That said, it was the second character I created, and if I'd had much experience of playing other control sets I doubt I would have stuck with him for so long.

The latest thread of thoughts on gravity is here

and covers all the major issues with the set.

Pairing the set with a control heavy secondary, like Time, will have mitigated some of gravity's shortcomings; plus you may not have extensive experience with how much better other control sets do their job. Also if you've been playing gravity extensively and not doing much else, you've probably gotten very good with it.

When the only character I was playing was a grav controller I became an absolute artist with wormhole - dropping whole spawns in neat piles on a tank's head ready for aoe death, and normally roaming ahead of the group and firing spawns backwards while the rest of the team were finishing up the last kills. This was great fun, and with a team who knew you and knew what you could do, enormously satisfying. Sadly the last time I dusted off my grav controller I found my skills had atrophied a bit, and was rapidly asked to stop using wormhole. This was with an SG team not a pickup, mind, and I was still pretty good at not scattering mobs to the four winds. Finding a pickup group forgiving enough to let a rookie grav controller polish his skills would be near nigh impossible.

Properly fixing grav is, sadly, very unlikely to happen, as it would take a violation of the cottage rule to make the abomination that is dimension shift a useful power. The fact that two of the set's fundamental premises (slow being competative with any other secondary effects and high single target damage being a worthwhile unique niche for a control set) are bad ones doesn't help either. Not being very good at single target damage anyway (DPA matters, damn it! and fix snipes while you're at it!) is just the icing on the cake.

That said, improving the set might happen, and I sincerely hope it does. Increasing lift damage to be on par with mind control, dropping propel's animation time to the point that its damage per activation was significantly better than any other control power and tweaking wormhole so it teleports bosses and stuns at the start of the animation would make the set a fair degree better and wouldn't violate the cottage rule or require re-ordering powers.

A proper overhaul needs a complete rework of dimension shift so it isn't horrible, and a reorder of power picks so reliable control is available early and dominators aren't forced to take a single target attack power (i.e. move the ST hold to level 2 like just about every other set out there, and move wormhole to level 12 or so).

I'm an eternal optimist so Swartzchild himself is sitting racking up day job badges in the hope that grav gets a rework eventually.
  3. This explains....a lot.

A group of eight of us ran some of first ward a couple of weeks back as part of an SG night. We were running on +1 level enemies, as I recall, and running nicely through the shade/specter parts of the arc.

Hitting the Awakened resulted in absolute carnage. The tumour head seers are pretty nasty when you're getting groups with two or three of them in there, but the main thing was our tanks (we had two, me playing shield and a super reflexes girl) dropping like stones to apparently fairly unthreatening awakened groups.

It now seems so obvious that it was an accuracy buff that was causing it, but at the time I couldn't figure it out. I was scanning through my combat log while we were picking ourselves up after the latest massacre and trying to spot what was hitting me with a massive defense debuff - I could see the enemy hit chances shooting up but couldn't see a consistent previous hit that explained it.

The buff is horrific to anyone relying on defence for survival - as DDR doesn't help and it must stack from different casters (we had a force fielder and a time manipulator in the team so my tank's positional defences were in the 80s, and I was seeing hit chances of 50 and 90% coming in). It also has a decent duration so it's not like devouring earth cairns where you can quickly kill the caster to remove the buff.

To add to the fun, several of the minion awakened can summon a conduit as part of their powers. More joy!

We managed to cobble together various tactics that finally got us going at a good pace, but just about every fight was hanging-on-by-the-fingernails scary. Overall it was a massively enjoyable play session, and kudos to the devs for giving us lethally challenging content.

It was also interesting to note that I happily breezed through first ward solo with an SO'd corruptor at higher difficulty. The awakened get exponentially nastier in large numbers.

Many thanks for highlighting this. At the time of the run Paragonwiki's awakened data was incomplete, and I was still uncertain of what the villain of the piece was.
  4. I'd play around with head auras and empty jars and see how they look. Leaves, flies, tarot cards and victorian decor all lend themselves to some interesting bios depending on how well they show up and how contained by the jar they are.

Of course you could always stick a green binary head aura on an empty jar and give it dual pistols and a trenchcoat, for an all new take on "City of Neos". Shame the aura isn't usable until 50, even if you've unlocked it.
  5. Hmm, we got exactly the same effect today on a Synapse TF. We tried relogging the leader to see if the new leader was recognised by Synapse, but to no avail.

One of the vets on the team remembered an old bug that is caused by the Zombie Apocalypse event happening when you're running a task force.

We went and killed zombies until the event ended, then redid the mission that was looping and it completed correctly and the TF continued, so it seems plausible the event was the cause of the issue.
  6. You are a wise person, because Storm is an absolute riot to play!

If you want to pair storm with a blast set rather than a controller or mastermind I'd definitely consider a corruptor instead of a defender.

I'm biased on this as I recently levelled a storm/elec def to the mid 40s, then deleted and recreated the toon as an archery/storm corruptor (the concept worked either way so I could keep the bio and costume intact).

In team situations I was finding that Storm is a huge team asset, but it doesn't require a lot of activity most of the time. Making sure freezing rain is coming down on all enemies all the time is key, but apart from that and turning steamy mist on, your time is your own. Many of your other tools are extremely situational and only need to come out when things are going horribly wrong and folks are about to start dying. That's when you kick into gear and start tossing out tornado, artfully herding while debuffing with hurricane and so forth.

As, unless things are going badly wrong, you've got plenty of time to blast once your debuffs are set up, a corruptor AT seems to leverage this better. The stronger storm powers on the defender don't outweigh this, in my experience, unless you're only ever active on very large teams - you gain about an extra 5% resistance debuff on freezing rain (35% instead of 30%) and 10% resistance buff from steamy mist. Hurricane's debuff is so huge you can get it well over cap with a single to-hit debuff IO on a corruptor, and tornado's slightly lower damage and stun/fear durations don't really matter as when you use it you're mostly using it for the KB/KU (which is identical).

Of course I may have been prejudiced because popular wisdom has it that electrical blast is a fairly weak set. On a defender, certainly, I found it horrible.

As for what blast set to pick, I'd go with concept and fun as your main decision maker, although a set with strong AOE is useful (if you're teaming AOE is always useful, if you're soloing you can use tornado and lightning storm for single target damage).

A few synergies that did occur to me:

Dark blast will turn you into a disorientating machine as you can stack thunder clap and dark pit to produce a fairly rapidly recharging aoe stun combination that will stun bosses. The slows in snow storm and freezing rain will stop your shell-shocked victims from wandering away too much.

Ice blast works well thematically and blizzard on top of freezing rain won't leave much alive, and is going to look great. Better still, the two freeze rays are holds which include
-knockback. Hold something under a lightning storm and it's going to die if it can't be knocked out of the storm.

If you want to go with a controller, control sets have -kb in the aoe immobilise rather than the hold, which allows you to do the same trick on a larger scale (the control set aoe holds have too long a recharge to be used on every pull, generally, but the aoe immobs recharge very fast). You need to do something to stop the immobilised mobs shooting the bejeezus out of you, but the fact they keep slipping over in freezing rain will help a bit. If you're not in a hurry you can just hide round the corner until at least the minions are dead. You can also keep throwing tornados at the group, as they ain't going anywhere, to add some stuns and fears to the mix as well as significant extra damage. The only set this doesn't work with is Gravity, because it has -kb in the hold not the immobilise. This is a bit of a shame really as wormholing stuff into a corner and pinning them there with hurricane would work awesomely. Oh, one fly in the ointment is that hurricane and lightning storm don't get the containment damage boost, as they're pets.
  7. Just to check, are you currently slotted with Efficacy Adaptor or Performance Shifter?

You may well have been seeing the "Chance for +End" proc in Performance Shifter firing (which you must have used if you six slotted) - if you've subsequently switched to Efficacy Adaptor you won't see that any more, as the Efficacy Adaptor set doesn't contain a proc IO.

As the proc returns 10% of your max End and has a 20% chance to trigger it's quite noticable.
  8. This one's going to be a matter of personal choice. You're going to have higher damage with 3 SOs and musculature than with 2.

Approximate numbers (bearing in mind your total radial adds 16.5% damage that is subject to enhancement diversification (ED) and 16.5% that isn't):

    3 SOs = 100%+16.5% = 116.5% reduced to 97.5% by ED then +16.5% for +114% damage

    2 SOs = 66.7%+16.5% = 83.2% reduced to 82% by ED then +16.5% for +98.5% damage

So you lose half an SOs worth of damage by only slotting two (or waste half an SOs damage to ED by slotting 3, depending on which way you look at it).
  9. Hmm, I hadn't even thought about changing the settings for stealth, thanks EJI.

To do that I need to turn on "hit by foe" on the settings and maths tab?

Hmm, that means I'm going to need to fork out for the PvP IO anyway to get to softcap.
  10. Hi Brute gurus!

I have an old Claws/Elec brute coming up on 50 and am just about to respec him. I'm trying to balance a build that's capable of tanking for a team when needed, while maintaining a decent damage output.

My current build (details below) is S/L softcapped and fast enough to run an aoe chain of Follow Up/Spin and a single target chain of Follow Up/Focus/Slash, although both chains get very slightly gappy when hasten is down (about 16s downtime per cycle at the moment).

I'm wondering if there's anything I've missed, or could do a bit better. Especially as I do have the option of dropping a +3 def pvp IO into the build, which would allow me to slot lightning field a LOT better, and maybe pick up a little extra regen in places, while staying soft capped. Are there significant gains to be made there, to justify the 2.5 billion price tag on the IO?

Any thoughts or comments are most welcome.

Edited to trim the MIDS export down as I'd exported full set breakdowns.
  11. Some interesting feedback here guys, thanks.

As far as boosting defence goes, do you have to reactivate toggle powers once power boost is active, or will the boosts increase automatically?

E.g. if I have weave running and activate power boost, with the +def from weave increase, even though it was "on" before power boost was activated?
  12. From looking over the info on Power Boost in the energy manipulation set it appears that it doesn't buff secondary damage, recharge rate debuffs, knockback, stun duration or damage debuffs, so the only impact it has on Dual Pistols is to boost the hold effect of suppressive fire (when using a special ammo type).

    Am I reading this right?

Is it an eminently skippable power on a DP/EM blaster?
  13. Thanks again for the suggestions guys. It now appears I have a general system problem, rather than it being CoH specific.

I'm seeing some system instability and occasional blue screens.

I've installed the windowns SDK and analysed the minidump from the last blue screen, but interpreting it is proving beyond me.

  14. Thanks for your suggestions Mandu.

    I'm using a GTX 8800 with driver version 275.33.

I'll check out the card following your advice and see what I can discover.
  15. Right, now I'm utterly baffled. I've reinstalled the game client and started off with much lower graphics settings than I was running previously, and everything's (sort of) fine. In that I've had just one freeze in 4 or 5 hours of play, rather than a guaranteed freeze within 15 seconds of entering the game.

What baffles me is I've changed nothing at all on my system, hardware configuration, or even regular program updates. I've played two months with all Ultra mode settings maxed out, without a problem, and now I'm playing with settings at "performance". It's bizarre.

I'm fairly certain it's not a CPU temperature issue as I'm familiar with those and resolved them previously. Possibly graphic's card temp? I have no idea where to start testing if that's the issue, so any advice would be welcome.
  16. Hi folks,

I've already submitted a support request on this one, but I thought I'd see what the resident player base gurus had to say, just in case.

I'm getting complete system freezes a few seconds after I log into game. What's frustrating me is I've changed absolutely nothing on my system since yesterday, when everything was running fine. I've even checked through my stability monitor logs to see if anything's been updated, but nothing has.

Sadly I can't get CoH Helper to work properly, so can't provide the info from that. It won't detect my CoH registry settings. I'm running it on the same login as my game, and I run without UAC on so nothing has the "run as administrator" boxes ticked. If anyone has any other suggestions as to why it's not detecting properly, please let me know.

Any help or suggestions anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Actions I've taken so far are:

Verifying the CoH install using the launcher
Clean reinstall of video and sound drivers
    Memory test
    Checked DXDiag for any errors

    Thanks again,

  17. I'm not certain if it's a bug or a feature, but I recently updated a character costume from the old metallic torso/legs/boots to the new ultra mode super shiny metallic look.

The new metal effect is great, my problem is the metallic skull head hasn't been updated to the new texture, so you get a very obvious mismatch with the metallic torso. Previously they went together seamlessly, so this is a bit of a shame.

Any plans to update the metallic skull to use the new texture?
  18. More options to reduce/remove effects from powers.

This is incredibly cheap to implement in terms of resources, as it requires no new animations, and returns control of the look of their toon to the player. It always strikes me as a shame that the character designer gives you such amazing freedom to get a character the way you want, and then your power set and ally buffs take it all away by burying the costume under a dozen different flashing lights.

If there's a PvP balance issue then it should be possible to disable low/no effects sets in PvP zones. I don't pvp so I don't know how important identifying specific powers is, but I'm assuming it might be.

Seeing as nearly everyone has access to customisable cosmetic aura options, I'm kind of surprised toggle powers even need animations. Once you have half a dozen toggles running the whole lot blends into a undifferentiated glowing lump anyway. I'd much rather be able to set the entire set to "no effects" and then put in a single aura that works with the costume at the tailor.

Some powers just look horrible with certain costumes - fire shield/plasma shield for example look horrific on my scrapper because he's a huge body type in armour and big trousers - so parts of his costume sticks out through the shield effects and it just looks a mess.

An option for the damage auras that don't have geometric perfect circles pulsing out from your character would be nice. I don't need to see when my aura pulses, or the exact extent of its range. I'd rather something a bit more chaotic. Admittedly the electric armour damage aura graphics I think are great - except for the big perfect circle round the edge.

Teleport, please yes give some alternate animations for this. Even no animation and a gradual fading away would be a nice alternative to chest thumping.

    Hasten.

    This!

If popular demand is allowing folks to set whether or not they take the speed buffed effect from the Kinetics buff (which is an excellent fix for AoE buffing, good work!) then can't we set how buffs on our toons are displayed graphically? I'm with CrashPositron in that I'd love to be able to disable buff graphic effects so you can actually see you character.
