  1. Damnit Mel! Keep your pants on!
  2. Here's a hard question for people. What did the outside artists do to earn their way into this forum?

    Have they played this game?

Have they paid their monthly fee to post here?

    Do they understand our community?

Have they proven themselves to be supportive of this forum?

What did they do that granted them the right to have ads here?
  3. Quote:
Also there has been advertisement of outside artists here for almost 2 years now. Why wasn't this ever brought up before?
It's never been brought up because it was never on a scale as such that you brought to the board. Also, nobody ever asked before.

Frankly, I see this as just another sign that people are inherently selfish. Artists get screwed quite a bit on the whole, as they're the ones who are doing all the work and they get very little in return for it. Very few people give artists themselves any return art, artists don't gain anything significant for their troubles and they're constantly doing stuff to further the community here, such as having free art threads, donating art to contests and trying to fill in holes when other commissioners get screwed out of their paid works.

The only thing an artist here should enjoy is the respect and appreciation from their fellow forum goers who they provide to all the time. Yet, this series of threads has shown that the people who are the recipients of such charity are not appreciative of their gains. The majority of the forum goers here are the people who do not do the work and gain all of the benefit. They are the consumers and all they want is to gain more art. It's not surprising to find that they do *not* find any problems with having outside interference with the business practices of the forum, since it does not effect *them.*

"Since it doesn't hurt me, I don't care."

Since there will never be more providers here than takers, you can always hold a basic vote and the providers will always lose to the selfish desires of the takers, since they are the minority. It's because when it comes to these types of advertisements, it's obvious that the takers will gladly siphon up as much art as they can selfishly and then turn on the providers, the moment a new source pops up. There is no loyalty at play and thusly there is no trust or faith at all.

Why would anyone put their faith in a majority that simply uses them and then discards them without much of a second thought? The bare fact that people don't see a problem with this *is* the problem.

(edit: rhetorical speaking now, not addressing TA directly.)

Seriously, how many of the non-artists here actually understand how much work and effort goes into making art? How many understand the massive amount of generosity that these people have in giving away their art for free? Do you *really* understand how many potential hours of their lives they've devoted to you?

It's one thing to go 'outside' the forum to get your art. That's a decision that anyone can make and is part of the freedom we all enjoy. But it's another thing entirely to bring a highway of advertisement right into the den. That's the reason I will never support a project like this here. The scale is too large and too disruptive and too tempting to the people that take their art for granted.
  4. Oh I know exactly what the question was asking. It's still a very firm no.
  5. Too bad there's no artist union here so that when the artists collectively don't want something, they can enforce their will, seeing as how they're the minority.

"Okay, if you consumers want more advertising to people that aren't us, then forget about any free art threads from now on."

It's a shame that the people who made this community what it is, get no control over the contents, because they will always be the minority not in power.
  6. No.

Leave the DA artist network to a link, where people can choose to explore it at their own leisure.

The split between consumers and artists is kinda amusing.

There's many opinions on whether or not being complimented by me is a good thing, but frankly BW, I don't ever want you to change. You have completely valid points, you make a good case and you don't say things to be a jerk. You point out things that need to be said and are not afraid of people disliking it. Even when we don't agree on something, I always respect your opinion. There are *very* few other people on this forum that I can say that about.

I wish there were more people like you around.
  11. The price set by the artist is really just an arbitrary price point that they pick. There's no real right or wrong answer to what it should be set as. If the artist desires business, then they will conform to the economic flows of their audience or else suffer, but this is not a requirement for commission work in general.

I personally charge only [the price of a fast food meal] for commissions, because I do not want to use it as a money source. Not every artist does or wants to. Is it worth my time to charge that little? Maybe. Maybe not. I don't really care. I'm free to pick and choose my art and what I will accept as a commission so when I don't want to do them, I simply don't take them. It's really as simple as that. I could likely get as much as 50 dollars for my art, due to name recognition and specialty content within certain groups. But frankly, I don't want to. I like having low prices so that other poor people can afford my art, when they're locked out of getting art from the people who charge and arm and a leg. That in itself brings me happiness, so it's fulfilling in a non-monetary way.

I know of many artists who are in that same boat and will charge very low prices for their own art, not because they undervalue it, but simply because they want to. It's a personal decision that we all make, so it's pretty difficult to say, "you're pricing your own commissions wrong."

The same person is neg repping me as well, but I welcome it. It makes them waste their time on something that I don't care about. I find it amusing more than anything else.

No matter what color of rep I have or arbitrary number attached to it, I'm going to be me. I also respect people who are the same, regardless of if I like them personally or not. In a world with so many followers and people that absolutely need to belong, it's nice to find those few that can speak for themselves.

There will always be those types of people. I would suggest either ignoring them, or making them waste their time on lowering a rep that's so ridiculously high that they have no effect. There's so many places to do that in these forums, it's easy to find one and camp it.

As for my negative stalker? Keep at it! I want my rep to match Mel's hair. RED and lots of it.

Yep, you can get rep artificially whenever you want it. That's the second rule of life in action: people will abuse anything.
  14. I got a sweet pic of my Fire/Fire blaster version of Mel, done by my friend RabidGundam. This is her Vanguard-ish stealth suit costume that I use when I want to "suit up" for battle.

  15. LOL, nice! I've seen Lady Lawful before, being a fan of Parity, myself. It's nice to see her here as well.
  16. Bravo. It's nice to see other people posting their thoughts on the subject.

As for general guidelines when dealing with an artist? There are NONE. Every artist is completely different and it's basically impossible to make a set of guidelines to follow because you'll always find the one artist who thinks oppositely of it. Instead, I prefer a sliding scale of scouted info. Asking what the artist is comfortable and then giving them info and resources based upon that, rather than providing my own off the bat. If an artist works best from their own ideas, then I let them do that. But I'm prepared to flood them with info in the event of them needing it.

Assume nothing and prepare for everything, is generally my method of operation.

That's why I think Rep is a ridiculous system. It's completely unreliable and has no bearing on anything real in the slightest bit. I mean look at me, I have positive rep? That's obviously no indication of the quality of content I have as a poster.

That being said, if you want rep, I'll give it to you whenever I can, though you can just go to one of the rep farming threads in the forum game section.
  18. No, depending upon what that teacher wants you to learn and what their job is, it's quite possible for them to be very stiff and unforgiving in what they do and still be a good teacher. The opinions and validity of their methods really vary from person to person, so it's basically impossible to say one way or another.

If they took someone with natural talent in one field, completely ignored it and made them do something else, it's possible for them to still have done a good job of teaching them a particular skill. The difference is between where the division line between being a good mentor in supporting the student and being a good teacher and supporting the skill set. Everyone's view on where that line should be is different.

I'm all for letting artists do what they want so long as a good foundation of skill is taught, but not everyone feels that way.
  19. Every art teacher is different. Because there's no right or wrong way to do art, there's also no right or wrong way to teach it. Sadly, it seems like most teachers want to stifle creativity and crush people into their way of doing things, regardless of how valid the technique they hate may be.
  20. Glad to see you stopping in Alex. Been following you from time to time on DA and I'm happy that you're still having fun with super heroes in general. :3
  21. I forget where I heard the guideline for it, but there was an old rule about superhero costumes that some creators would follow when making them. You choose two primary colors and then a 'metal' to compliment it. In this case, metal refers to any of the shades between white to black and then gold/silver.

I generally follow this rule and it usually results in consistently good combinations.
  22. There's so many colors in this outfit that it's causing clashes and is kind of an eyesore. I would suggest trimming it down to 3 major colors and then use a potential 4th for a detail or two. Generally you have to get people to use more than two, but in this case, the sheer amount of them is making the outfit lose it's coherence.

LOL, anything I'm involved in is naughty.

Actually, I quite enjoy the wide range of tone that this book will have in it. I think BW understands that contrast is needed in order to maintain interest, as well as the comfort level of the people within his pre-order list. If anything, I'm actually surprised that there's such risque level of content within the book at all, as I was expecting something more of a normal pinup mag. This is a pleasant surprise for me, but I understand that not everyone is MAXIMUMKINK all the time.

(though if you pay attention, there's a large percentage of this board that seems pretty ...alternative in preference.)

Also, I greatly enjoy the art of burlesque which is all about the tease, rather than the expose. There's an added element of sexiness when you have to use your imagination to fill in the gaps. That's why more tame pics added to the extreme ones is a nice compliment. The lewd pics set the potential tone of the book, while the slightly more chaste ones leave you to fantasize about the potential. It's in our nature to want what we can't have, so sometimes the 'less is more' approach actually works quite well in these endeavors.
