I only did that for one resume, and I figured since the guy that encouraged me to send it was called "Castle" it may as well fit in there!

I got hit with that question once, not exactly that way, but similar question.
My answer was: "I don't think you will ever have anyone come here just to tell you they suck, Of course I'm going to tell you I'm the guy you want. But tell you what, I listed a bunch of people form my previous job you can feel free to call. I'm sure they will tell you I'm the one you want."
Mind you: I was not bluffing. I left my previous job with people begging me to stay. Did not matter much, they never called the references and, from what I was told later by the HR guy, after I left the company owner (guy that interviewed me) dashed to HR and said "thats the guy I want."
I like to think I'm good with interviews, and never apply for a job I don't think I can't tackle... but I write some horrendous resumes. May be getting better though. Last resume I wrote got me a job darn fast. -

Quote:Unfortunately, as you can see by this thread alone, there are a lot of players that dont feel boycotting NCSoft is something they would want to do. Not only dont they feel boycott is too much for them, but they also are insisting others go give other NCSoft titles a try.Sure it's sold a lot. It's also buggy as hell with major server issues. Over 15,000 COH players have signed the petition so far. Those are informed and angry customers. Each one is an individual. En masse they represent a lot of income lost.
1 x 15,000 x $60 = $900,000
That's real money.
Nothing wrong with that, if they like the other games they like them. But it's unfortunate in the sense that you cant claim every signature in that list equates a lost sale, therefore we cant use direct math. -

Quote:YOU may think it does not mater, but it makes a whole world of difference. All missions/quests in every MMO are the same variation of kill things, click glowies, or solve the puzzle. It doesn't matter if they are instanced or open world, It's all the same. The only difference is the genre/story. If the genre/story is interesting to you, you won't notice the repetitive grind.
If this was like any other MMO, after I take take care of Dr Vahzilok for good... he still spawning in Steel Cannon and I keep bumping into him.
With the current model, you defeat Dr Vahzilok and you dont get to see him again (unless you time travel.)
There are some world spawns that keep popping up, but those are not tied up to the story. -
Would be better than nothing. Yes. Unlikely to happen without redistributing the server software, though.

Quote:Same. Only thing that impressed me were the huge world boss fights, but how are those going to be doing once most the playerbase is high level? Can you handle them on your own as he hinted (that some bosses scale based on how many players are around)?I hadn't actually seen the video as it's not up on That Guy With The Glasses, but having seen it now... It's a good review of the game, but I found myself tracing after his points and going "Don't care... Don't Care... Doesn't interest me... GOD that is a bad idea... That's team only... Don't care... Don't care..." and so on. I will freely admit I don't know enough about Guild Wars 2 to judge the game objectively, but if what Joe mentioned is what the game is about, then it quite literally has nothing I want out of a game, and quite a few things I specifically DON'T want out of a game. The "quest" system, for instance, is HORRID. I hate those communal overworld quests.
Again, that's not to say Guild Wars 2 is a bad game, but to me, it's simply innovating in a place that I didn't think needed innovation and adding features I don't care about. It's a game that overfocuses on mechanics that I don't like, set in a world which I'm not that interested for. As I've said many times before, this isn't a question of a boycott. I just literally have no reason to pay money for this.
I like my "dungeons". I love the indoor mission that I enter, and can entirely clear solo. I loved dungeons in World of Warcraft, hated that they are group only activities and although good looking, only a few per level range.
I rather have constant repetitive dungeons all my leveling career than insanely unique dungeons I must grind through every few levels and again, really dislike overworld quests.
Also: travel. One thing that got me excited about Aion was flying, and the horrible disappointment that it was when I got to fly and see a timer before I dropped to my doom... there is no reason why a fantasy MMO should not allow flying, other than make sure you die traveling to dangerous areas. -
Quote:Its sad that the minute someone slaps on a lil bit of an attitude round here you guys immediately see it as trolling. Seriously is hilarious you all need to get a grip and start going out into the real world more often. Maybe the closure of this game will do your mental and social well being some good!

Seems all-right.
The lack of trade is a huge one, not a minor one, for a game with loot.
Irrelevant though. I am not going to give NCSoft any more money. -
Quote:I didn't know they also removed Lineage 1 from America (no clue why they would do that... why not just keep it running???) but it may establish a fearful pattern.Add in this and there's your story. The Western MMO market - right now - is saturated in titles with a dwindling audience. NCSoft, having the long-term thought 'n planning ability of your typical corporate giant, is bailing out on what they see as a busted market. Paragon's secret project was no longer in their plans. Once they figured that out, then, well, might as well shut down the whole studio.
At some point, they may decide Guild Wars is not performing good in America. They may keep it in asia and just shut it down in it's birth-land. -
Samuel_Tow, when you say you dont want terrain... are you saying you want the core and majority of the game to take place inside civilization instead of forest/deserts/etc?
If so, how likely would you be to play something like... lets say "Deus Ex: The You-Wish MMO"? -
Quote:Pull kitten wiskers??? Pluck baby duck feathers!!!!...ArenaNet after its association with NCSoft holds retreats to kick puppies and pull the whiskers off kittens"
...
P.S. I'm pretty sure I also read ArenaNet plucks the feathers off baby ducks just for fun.
OH NOES!!!

I will miss a lot from this game, so I narrowed this down to a "system" I will miss the most:
The Super-Sidekick System.
I have tried other games over the years, but at the end I cant get into any because it's next to impossible to stay at a playable level range to my friends in the world. Either I outlevel them or they outlevel me.
Champion Online has the same thihng with their Sideckick/Champion thing but I am not really interested on that game.
I know EQ2 has a mentor thing where some people can go down in level but thats one to one and only going down.
Any other game out there has something like it?
Secondary system I will miss: Flashback. Nuff said on that one. -
The steampunk use does not set the game apart from other MMOs one bit. Clockwork technology used in fantasy games for ages is not much different, and almost every fantasy game from EverQuest to WoW are full of clockwork. Heck, World of Warcraft has rockets!
Lack of certain races is not a big deal either; both online Final Fantasy games did this already (although you can argue elves always were there.)
The world of Guild Wars 2 has its unique spices, but at the end of the day it's the same generic fantasy dish, with only game mechanics setting it apart. -
Quote:I don't hold it against him becaus he seems to have been puting a lot of work in another thread to defend GW2, since... well, he is enjoying it very much.I don't know, your reaction just seems out of proportion to the tone of the post.
I did feel I had to clarify the stuff here was not made up, though. -
Quote:I saw GW2 in action, my best friend has been trying to get me into it (irony, I sold it to him by sending him a video of the character creator, since I know he likes that kind of thing.)Do you have me on ignore, Sam?
I explained earlier how your description of your ideal FF game is pretty much EXACTLY what GW2 is... I'm not even the only one who did.
I see enough of the game to say the steampunk elements are not prevalent enough to make the game not feel like fantasy. It's fantasy. If you are sick of fantasy, there is nothing in GW2 that will convince you to stay.
Final Fantasy (mostly VII and up, with the potential exception of IX) is heavy on technology, to a point where fantasy is just an afterthought. Like constant paintings in the walls of a high tech world. Guild Wars 2 feels the opposite way with its coverage of Steam Punk.
Maybe you can compare GW2 to an earlier FF, like FFVI.
I'm not saying GW2 is a bad game, I'm just saying it is another one in the pile of fantasy games and nearly nothing separates it from the rest (in theme.) -
Nothing was made up. I did a couple of asumptions, but nothing was madeup. I splattered the thing with links precisely so no one would claim that.

Quote:The way aquisitions work, I'm sure most of those layoffs were from the Ntreev staff. It's one of the first things that are done with aquisitions: bring over as many systems as you can and get rid of as much staff as possible. Especially true if the company you aquired turns out to be too generous with it's employees. There was also a big layoff (approx 400 employees) in June, shortly after Nexon bought a large share of NCSoft. The severance from that layoff is one of the reasons that they posted a loss for Q2.
It seems that that's about when the "restructuring" really started ramping up. -
Quote:Trying to find comfort in the "nothing last forever" phrase, for this case, is like trying to find comfort in "Pets don't live forever" after having your 2 year old dog shot dead. You may say that nothing lasts forever, and that I should enjoy it while it lasts. This is true; but with so much loss and uncertainty in my life right now, I'm looking for stability. I need to at least be able to pretend, before I invest time and money in something, that it's not going to vanish out from under my feet a few months or a year later and leave me gasping and treading water. Again.
The issue is not that CoH is going to die. It’s that CoH is going to die way before it’s time was due, and NCSoft is holding the shutgun. -
Quote:Doubt many. They would be forced to cover relocation costs, that can be more expensive than severance packages (depending on the employee's time at the company.)Well...it will be interesting to see how many ex-Paragoners wind up at ArenaNet then.
But being fired, and then ofered a job, if the employee is willing to relocate at their own expense, that may actually result in a few moving over... if they are willing to do the move. -
Yea yea, I'm going to be a bit of a troll here... but a troll with a point!!!
Back in 2009, NCSoft West laidoff quite a few people.
This sparked some rumors in various sites, among them Kotaku, about a potential delay on Guild Wars 2. It seems that the ArenaNet team felt inclined to dismiss the rumor that this was hurting Guild Wars development by... well... taking in the blame:
Quote:Although the wording is different, it still is the same message kotaku got for the closure of Paragon Studios "realignment of company focus and publishing support".You've all seen announcements about restructuring at NCsoft West, and it's natural to wonder whether that restructuring impacts ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 development. In fact, the reason NCsoft West is restructuring itself is so that the company can put all of its focus into its top-tier games like Guild Wars 2. Our team continues to grow, and has the strong support and financial backing we need to achieve our goal of making Guild Wars 2 the best online role-playing game ever created.
In other words: resources [ie: budget, not staff] used on CoH will be channeled to offer stronger support and financial backing to top-tier games (I assume still within NCSoft West. What is in NCSoft West? As far as I understand, they undertake the development efforts behind Guild Wars and localization efforts behind Aion, Lineage and Lineage 2.
Now, to be fair, in Oct 7, 2010 there were layoffs specifically within Paragon Studios, with this press release:
Quote:In an effort to put a greater focus on the City of Heroes franchise, Paragon Studios is shifting resources within the studio. In order to optimize the refocus, there has been a reduction in force that has impacted a small amount of people. Paragon Studios is an integral part of the NCsoft West family and will continue to prosper, delivering the world’s most popular superpowered hero MMO game, City of Heroes, to fans around the world.
Now, one thing I did noticed, just 7 days before this announcement, ArenaNet started a headhunt for employees.
Only 16 positions are listed at their job site now, but also got to keep in mind that also NCSoft blamed labor costs for its losses due to "restructuring" in the past quarter.
What restructuring? Perhaps the aquisition of Ntreev for $96.7 million back in February. I’m sure that came with a lot of employees and forced restructuring.
OK… I lost focus here… hey there is a reason why I’m not a New York Times reporter!
So yea, I don’t really have a lot of traces back to GW2 other than that first one in 2009. I was just not able to resist the trollish title. But it does seems that “publishing support” is NCSoft’s way of saying “taking budget away from one studio and giving that budget to another studio.” It just makes sense it may had been ArenaNet at this point, usually moving money overseas is hard so it’s more likely money budgeted to one US studio will be directed to another US studio. I highly doubt they will sink that money into Lineage or Aion translation efforts.
It’s very likely Paragon Studios died so they were able to relocate more resources into GW2.
Edit to add: remember if you play Guild Wars 2: Every time you earn XP in that game, you are drinking the blood of thousands of dead incarnate heroes and villains. Maybe. -

Or licensing another engine from somebody and starting an all new game.
