but ive never had problems with norton before thats why ive stuck with it, but performance differs from person to person

    lol - no worries SK.

BTW, the client where I am uses a distributed solution from Symantec, my office is an authorized McAfee support center (we actually feed updates to some remote client sites), and still at home I prefer to use Avast! for its low footprint and ease of use (it's modular, so I can turn off entire segments like P2P coverage, or internal network - or pause it entirely for the time I need it to be off).

I prefer a free solution over the "big boys"... Go figure.

BTW - I've replied to your PM.

    A good spyware tool indeed.

    What about antivirus though?
  3. Aw darnit... now that there's more of us turning off rep, it's gonna turn into the popular thing to do.

According to the Hijack This report you have Norton Internet Security still installed. Can you please uninstall that while we are troubleshooting this issue?"...
I can guarantee you it is safe as we would be using either the built in Windows remote desktop support, or the Messenger one, and I am as discreet as they come. We can set the remote connection to answer to one specific password, and limit it's duration to that one session I would assist you (well, hopefully only one will be required).

This is what I do for a living, and my current assignment is a government agency. Nothing I find/see will ever make it out of our direct conversations. If you're logged in at the same time we go through this process, you'll have "veto" power over my actions, and we can even set up a voice chat session so I can confirm any actions before I do anything at all.

This is your machine, your investment. I'd just be proposing solutions and, with your approval, trying them out.

As for the Norton/Symantec thing... Has the CoH Updater been specifically allowed if you have their firewall system working? It could be that this was done in your previous installation, but not this one. These permissions have to be set per application, and don't transfer over using the File and Transfer Wizard (f this is what you used).

An overzealous firewall could also explain the blocked / unreachable IPs.

I've had to set my firewalls (Sunbelt Personal Firewall - formerly Kerio, and ZoneAlarm) to allow CoH Updater through (exceptions list) specifically to ensure proper functining on my WinXP and Vista PCs. I use Avast! as an antivirus and Spybot completes the protective trinity to prevent malware.

BTW, I have a Vista 64 desktop here at work with CoH on it, and using Symantec's Endpoint client - and it works fine.

Your comments here help, but if you see my character playing on your team and I screw up, please feel free to pull me aside after the fireworks and tell me what I've done wrong.
Great attitude, welcome to Protector, and don't let the comments here sway you from enjoying your character as you want to.

It may look like there's specific behavior expected from team mates / powersets / archetypes, but really, I'm guessing that this venting is aimed more at experienced players who should "know better".

Personally, there's nothing aside from going AFK without warning that will really annoy me.

Sure KB isn't fun when you've got a great group herded around your tanker. But I wouldn't ask an energy blaster to sit still because it makes the team waste an extra 2 seconds on a mob.

I try to adapt my play style to what is happening. On my tanker example, sometimes I'll remain almost motionless, taunting to me and letting the team take out the mobs. Other times I'll be much more mobile, using my scranker build to take out the more threatening elements before the team even gets there. I've answered questions about builds when asked, but never imposed my opinions about power selections. Especially since you can make any build work in this game if you're not afraid of a challenge.

As a player, I like taking my time, especially on AE arcs, to get into the story more than into the action. Having to move from mob to mob in .5 sec in fear of offending someone would piss me off (unless that was decided in advance as being the tactic). I usually stay away from "speed runs" on task forces because of this.

The important thing is: have fun. If you're not having fun on your current team, then kindly let them know you want to do something else, and leave.

It's all about finding, and then enjoying, what you like to do.

Packet loss... unless there is trouble with the Vista specific drivers you could be looking at faulty network equipment (firewall configuration, network card trouble, faulty cable, router problem, ISP issues, etc). So it's not really the launcher that's the issue then. Switching OS will probably not help you there.

And to think that with the previous generation of MS operating systems, people were clamoring for better and tighter security.

    Tell you what.

If you want to send me your email address or MSN/GTalk/Whatever info we can probably schedule a time and I could remote into your PC and take a look. No pressure. And I won't feel offended if you refuse.

    Nice.

If SK is willing to continue this, I could probably use that for my next crazy server event by adding it to the pot.
  10. Odd.

I thought that since these badges would be some of the last ones requiring coordinated effort (at least minimally) that people would be all over this.

Can you bypass the updater to launch the game directly? (Create a shortcut where the target line reads ...pathname\CityOfHeroes.exe -project "coh"). Even if you get the error that your game client is not at the right version, at least it confirms that the app is launching properly. More command line options here: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Game_Client

Can you share some of the trouble(s) you're having?

I have 3 user accounts on my PC here, all of them using either launcher without a hitch. ( Core 2 Quad 6600 CPU, along with 4GB OCZ RAM, GeForce 8800 GT. RAID 0 300Gb system drive(s) ). I also have it working on a WinXP P4 HT, 7800GT OC, and even a AMD Athlon with a Ati 9800 Pro card. Multiple user accounts all around again.

Of course, if you're set on getting XP installed already, I'll stop helping / pestering you.
  14. Make mine tanker then.

What problems are you having with Vista exactly?

Working in IT, in a Vista only environment, I've yet to find a single issue that could be traced back to the OS as the real culprit.

.Net Framework fudge ups, wrong / missing drivers, shoddy security management in apps - yes. Those abound since Vista was released with its new way of handling things.

But seriously, What's the trouble you're having?

Is your hardware having trouble running Vista?
  16. I can do tanker on Team 2, or blaster on either team (since I think these need to be your level, right?).

  18. NVM - realized on my own that anyone with a registration date of Sept. 2009 could potentially be a trial acct.

    And that, plainly stated, sucks.

I'll stop there, and end with a disclaimer: I'm pointing these accounts out as potential examples of trial accounts created for the express purpose of padding votes in this game, and in no way am implying that this is what is actually happening and that anyone should be tarred and feathered for it.
