Quote:Yep. Right now its the best superhero thing going and I'm gonna keep enjoying it as long as I can.Every source of dependency that lies beyond one's control is a sword of Damocles hanging over one's entertainment.
(And I'm still optimistic that the lockboxes mean more devs will be incoming.) -

Quote:Exactly. ... Wait. I'm actually agreeing with E_L.Is there really evidence for anything from either side? Anyone really have information directly from the inside or an inside source?
So far, the only solid thing we have is NCSoft for some reason did not like what they see and decided to end it. The reason seems to be mostly pure speculation at this point or maybe it's it's all of the above or none of the above, or really as NCSoft said, the only inside and only ones that know the facts and is the horses mouth source said, to streamline the product line. So far their statement is the as close to a fact we have right now. COh did not fit within that streamline process so it had to go. -

Quote:Here's my theory, and I'm sticking to it:I think there is something subtlety different about CoH. Yes we have our trolls and jerks. But I think there is a larger sense of obligation to help others in CoH that isn't present in other MMOs. Again its not huge, we still are relatively anonymous people talking to one another and that leads to less than optimal behavior from some people.
But people who like Super Heroes, who are playing a Super Hero game and role playing Super Heroes tend to be just a little nicer on all the edges.
When it comes down to it, there's no game that not only encourages teaming like CoH but also makes it so, for lack of a better term, 'Care Bear' that its very rare that you'll have a bad experience PUGging. You have sidekicks and exemplars. Better XP and inf if you team up. Automatic loot with no 'need or greed'. Difficulty that can be adjusted and then steamrolled. Task forces that are basically repeated curbstomps. The most popular iTrials were the straight curbstomps, anything that required dedicated teamwork quickly fell into disuse.
Teaming and pick-up teaming in CoH was easy and fun. And I'll horribly miss it if it goes.
The only other game I can think of that comes close to the same sweet spot is maybe GW2. But you're not as much teaming as you're randomly ganging on open events, and I haven't ventured into a dungeon there yet either. -
Quote:I still spend more time here now than I do at any other game forums, even if I'm not spending all that much time in-game anymore. The thing I'll miss more than anything about CoX was just how friendly and mature the community often was.I'll assume, then, that you were never a part of the Aion or WoW forums. You think people get away with stuff here? Go take a look at the sh*t Aion players post. There's an entire thread dedicated to making fun of Brazilians and it's not a joke thread either. Hell, try asking for anything on the WoW forums and getting something other than "l2p nub".

Once you clear the tutorial with one character, you'll have the option of skipping it with any new ones you create. The 'skip' button does tend to hide down from the tutorial button though, so its hard to tell at first.
99% of the time, my invuln Might hybrid doesn't seem too gimped. She still seems to lack the single-target punch to knock out the really tough targets, but she's running a defensive passive and I'm still getting the hang of Enrage. Demolish and Uppercut should help with that, I'd think, but they're a little farther down my wish list of powers. -
what is this i don't even

That segues into one major difference I've noticed between CO and CoX. Just look at the body count over the past two years:
Statesman, Psyche, Malaise (though well deserved), a good number of Midnighters, and then the thousands of sailors disintegrated aboard their ships.
The destruction in Galaxy City when the Shivans struck.
The destruction in Kings Row and Steel Canyon when Battle Maiden attacked.
The destruction in Skyway City when Fusion and Jane Tremblor dual-teched.
Whoever didn't make it out of Nova Praetoria before Tyrant threw his tantrum.
Not to mention the untold lost once Hamidon went after Praetoria again.
The untold number lost after Dark Astoria re-awakened.
CoX had good writing, to be sure. I still have yet to find as heroic an adventure anywhere as One Good Spider. A lot of it, though, was downright depressing. Sure, we saved the world several times over, only after a good chunk of good and innocent people lost their lives. And a good number of them lost their souls too. Over time, it kinda harshed my heroic groove. I still haven't had any of my alts actually complete the DA arc. -
Checking my level 17 invuln, at rank 2 hers reduces 39 damage from the top and adds an additional +44% resist for whatever's left. However, their resist doesn't work like ours, its +44% of whatever % resist you start with. She gets another +30% from her defense, a boost from Defiant if I'm using Defensive Combo, and then her final resist is multiplied by 1.1 if she's in her tank role. At least, that's what it looks like just from viewing the in-game stats. Not to mention she gets a +25% boost to her HP in that role too. (Just don't look at your super stats damage boosts. >_>; )

The Poe fight is easy, the trick is to run away right after the cutscene. All the minions should follow you into the hall, clear them out there, then run inside to take down the big boss. And just remember to block his soul drains.

Screenshot thread? Screenshot thread.
My current main, the cowboy cop cartoon fairy Foxfire. After various versions of 'DeathWishUponAStar' here, I was finally able to get her the look and powers I wanted:

So very very beautiful, and I'm so very very verklempt. Thank you for this as well.

Quote:Unsub's blogHi, don't take this as a response to your points. I just like collecting notable links.
Could you provide links to those you mentioned above...i'm afraid i've been slacking off and may have missed those.
Would be appreciative.
I'm pretty sure this was the podcast with Zwill
Samurai-ko and Arcana's posts are upthread. -
Quote:That's not it. There's enough smoke to believe that the 'darker and grittier' CoH 2 was killed because NCSoft needed the cash to cover up cost overruns for Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2. I've also heard Zwill confirm that the secret project's cancellation took CoH with it. I have no basis in fact, but given that prior history and a crappy second quarter it sounds to me like NCSoft needed money again - presumably for Wildstar, social media games, and/or the Blade & Soul Western port. Heck, consider how fast they announced the port after they shut down Paragon.Again, putting on my tinfoil hat, here's what I think:
NCSoft will claim some form of significant tax benefit for closing PS.
Quote:The offers didn't add up to the tax benefit + the hassle and legal fees involved in selling the IP.
Quote:NCSoft didn't like the Sekrit / didn't like the market conditions surrounding MMOs (SWTOR has been in a downward spiral, and that's gotta terrify most companies). -

Quote:See, that's the biggest thing we were missing: Alpaca Mastermind. The distinct lack of South American camelids led to us being completely blindsided by the Alpacalypse.

Quote:Tier 9 VIP who's been playing CoH pretty much non-stop for two years here. It took me a couple previous aborted starts, and a few days of puttering last month, but I feel I've gone past basic CO and into advanced mode now. Its not for everyone, but it might not be that much of a slog for all of us.Also, it is going to be a slog for any longtime player of CoH, however inclined to like it they are.
It's like going from a Wintel box to Apple, or vice versa- yeah they do basically the same stuff, but the way they go about it is completely bass-akwards from each other. -
New project: Troubleshoot the tutorial and hammer Cryptic into bugfixing again. Last time I ran it, I noticed they lost the 'how to block' mission.
-
What got CoH dropped was that NCSoft saw their investment $X in Paragon producing $Y returns, and believing if they used that investment elsewhere they would see greater returns than Y.
-
Quote:Yeah, it took me a bit of reading the wiki and forums and playing with character builders like CO-Forge to get a better idea of where I wanted to go. Also wound up spending something like 60 gold on a couple rebuilds of my Munitions fairy. Totally worth it, though, she's an amazing spawn cleaner.I find the specializations and such in ChO easier to deal with than IOs and set bonuses - both because I don't have to buy equipment to implement them and because as a tabletop RPG player they seem more natural to me.
Archetypes get an undocumented damage boost over freeforms to presumably compensate for their limited builds. There's still some player testing being done to see just how much of a boost it is. Given that Cryptic is currently in a Fix All The Things mode, this might not be permanent. -

Here's my two and a half week update:
A big warning for anyone going in cold: The tutorial is badly broken. In the original tutorial, your stats rose as you leveled and you got gear to boost them even further. Since On Alert, now you have to pick three Super Stats that rise as you level. And you don't any of those or any gear until after you leave the tutorial. And they have yet to fix the difficulty of the end mobs and the end boss to match that you no longer have the original stats.
It took me a few falls, but I was able to take down Black Talon with my heavy STR and CON tank. My poor Marksman, on the other hand... owowowowow. My recommendation if you're silver and you're just starting: Go Behemoth.
The good news is that once you finish the tutorial, you have the option for all following alts to skip it and start at level 6. Also you start in the Powerhouse, which means you can remove your starter non-energy builder and replace it for free with one that wasn't listed in creation (i.e. Assault Rifle).
The Pros:
- I might be branded as a heretic for saying this, but here goes: The combat, to me, is better. I can't say enough good things about having heavy hitting attacks with zero recharge. I'm a sucker for beat 'em ups, its why I loved CoH for so long. But being able to drop swaths of mobs with spammable AoEs? Every day and twice on Sunday, thank you. Sure, blocking and endurance management are vastly more important, but I like that too. I'm no longer rotating my way to victory, action there is more lively and interactive. I like that.
- Freeform. Or 'how to make a ranged tank'. Or even 'how to make a survivable blaster'. My main is blapping about with twin shooters and a pair of fairy fists. The farther I go along and the more defensive powers I take, the less squishy she feels. And powers are somewhat modifiable through advantages and specializations. There's not much in the way of control options, alas, but, that's a discussion for the next session.
- I said it before, and it bears repeating here: I love getting missions from plucky news reporters, costumed legends, people running up to you in the street, and the Chief of Police himself. Oh, and being in the middle of street sweeping for one mission, having your nemesis's minions drop in to say hi, and getting a mission to stop yet another of his fiendish plans. I feel more like a superhero. Then again, I still have a soft spot for Adam West and the Superfriends.
- Become powers. Maybe eventually they'll be customizable enough to slap a Jolly Roger on one, but still... usable vehicles and mecha.
- The environments are nicer. The city does look and feel a little more like a city, but then you get to travel to frozen tundras, deserts, and jungles too. And you have interactive environments like the TV studio, the bad guy bar, the mayor's office, and even a courtroom. Its little things that make it look a little more alive.
The Cons:
- The comicesque graphics won't be for everyone. I don't mind as much since I'm old school like that, but everyone's mileage will vary.
- I like getting missions from Not April O'Neil. I don't like that she had me save the cast of Anchorman. Even if it did involve Foxbat. And there's no clues either, just the odd bit o' lore here and there that you might've passed up while flying through the mission. The storytelling is just not as detailed, and I really do miss that.
- It looks like PWE's finally putting enough money into STO and CO to get things rolling again, and it looks like bugs are getting squashed but they're still there. And Cryptic can still be sloppy at times.
- The Paragon Market didn't hurt my wallet as much. There's so many nice things that are just.... nnngh. Though I can grind Questionite for Zen, if I was that compulsive of a player. @_@ And I got a lot more for my VIP membership than I do being Gold there.
- Open dueling. I was never one for PVP, and it seems some players just don't take 'duel declined' for an answer. :P
- Club Caprice doesn't have half the population Virtue's Pocket D did. If I want to people watch, there's the duel arena in the middle of Ren Cen or the Millennium City Powerhouse, but its no Atlas Park. -
Quote:Take this for what its worth, coming from a second level IT guy for a major national retailer with a very dusty accounting minor: Just because the property isn't earning doesn't make it worthless. Its still an asset, it still has value as part of NCSoft's portfolio. They have accountants checking and re-checking their spreadsheets to make their best guesstimate as to what the value of the property is. Word was my own company sat on vacant lots for years with no intent to build or sell, but they were still assets. In NCsoft's Mission Statement, their goal is "To make people in this world happier." As it is right now, the City of Heroes property is worthless, sitting on a shelf earning the company exactly KRW 0. If their mission is really to make people in this world happier, then really, almost any offer would be considered reasonable, "almost" being selling it for enough to cover the legal expenses of transferring the property and covering any indemnification and/or license fees that might be outstanding on the game.
Properties like Duke Nukem, APB, Hellgate, and Vanguard get stuffed away then sold years on down the road. And thats not barring NCSoft deciding to re-use the property. Maybe they'll make City of Heroes 2 when the MMO market looks better. Hell, my cynical side says they'll make City of Heroes iPhone games.
Right now, though, the property is in their hands, which means that - for good or ill - they get to decide its value. They have to explain to their shareholders why they're selling City of Heroes, so they get to decide what's reasonable. Its a hell of a situation, I know, but this is what happens when you're beholden to investors. Its never a pretty sight.
