  1. Can we move away from Lambda, BAF, and Keyes?

I don't think anyone is really arguing that you HAVE to have a +3 for those trials. A few people have expressed that they don't like flat 50s on the lower level trials... but no one is saying they're not allowed. m'kay?

The real discussion here should be about flat 50s on the upper level trials: TPN, MoM, DD... arguably UG.
  2. Now, let's be careful lumping the trials all together.

BAF, Lambda, and Keyes are a whole other world from TPN, MoM, and DD.

I don't have a problem with non-level shifted toons on the former. To keep it from being arduous, I'd prefer more level shifts than non-shifted... but either way, it's doable. And even Major T only said he didn't like it, not that he thought it shouldn't be allowed.

On the higher level trials, it IS a problem. It is inconsiderate to the other players, and, as I said before, the BEST I can hope for is that you don't understand the negative impact you're having - ESPECIALLY on MoM and DD where you can quite directly and literally be the reason the trial fails.

And for underground - I'm simply going to blame the devs for creating this problem. It's a massively rich source of iXP. You can go from nothing unlocked to fully unlocked in just a few runs. So of COURSE everyone wants to bring lowbies on an UG. However, too many lowbies is a near guaranteed failure.

So many problems would be solved here if the devs would have added levels gates to the trials so the people trying to lead the trials don't have to police it - and end up the bad guy for doing it.

    Sure... in beta.

On live, we had 50+1. But, yes... I understand. They can be done by flat 50s. And I agree... I wouldn't want to go back to it.

I just to point out that Richter is one of several people who put themselves out there to organize and run trials.

Huron most notably leads several times a week. Iron General and Major T lead them as well. BLA and Mage Black on occasion. I'm sure I've left someone out, and I'm sorry if I did.

I point this out just because that leading a trial is a very daunting task, and I want to make sure that those brave souls who do it with regularity are recognized for their effort.
  5. May I suggest we move past the whole "ticked vs irritated" thing?

T's one of my best friends... and I don't agree with him and I didn't like his choice of words.

But in the end, he was just expressing his personal opinion on the subject. He has never refused to bring a flat 50 on a BAF or Lambda, nor has any of the regular league leaders.

It was just an expression of his own opinion and reaction to it. It's not really relavent or important to spend time debating what word choice we should use to discuss Major T's personal opinion and reaction.

Actually, when they first came out, there were done by 50+1 characters, since the alpha slot had been out for long enough to have plenty of +1 characters available.
  7. I've not seen anyone being rude or mean about it, perhaps that's happening earlier in the day or later at night. I have seen people take things personally that were neither intended to be personal nor directed at the people taken offense, and I have seen some spirited exchanges. But I haven't seen any deliberate rudeness about it.

I have seen attempts to explain the need for level shifts on higher level trials ignored or dismissed out of hand, however.

Don't agree so much with this, though it is true that if there are a LOT of flat 50s the lack of lore pets really begins to show on the prisoner phase of an BAF.

But here's what I've observed: The higher level the iTrial, the larger negative impact unshifted character have.

Not that big a deal to BAF/Lambda... but progressively worse and worse as you go up. In fact, in my opinion, the single largest predictor of the success or failure of an UG trial is the number of unshifted characters on the league.

And now we have MoM and DD. On these trials, deaths don't just remove a player from helping, they actively buff the enemy.

The ONLY DD I've failed so far was failed d/t deaths. There was a flat 50 on the team and a pair of +1s. Every time I looked, they were dead. The counter was climbing and Diabolique eventually was buffed so much we couldn't hurt her. And because of the mechanics of that trial, you can't just stay dead.

I've been that person bringing a flat 50 on an UG, and I once brought a 50 on a MoM (only bc I didn't know that's what we were doing and the thing had started before I realized). I certainly felt like I was working it... mashing buttons constantly, moving, scrambling to keep up, rushing back to the team after I died - again. But however it felt to me... however hard it seemed like I was working... I was not contributing significantly. My team was carrying me, and the other players had to work that much harder to make up for my inability to contribute my share. I've been there and I've done that, and I won't do it again. I don't like feeling that I'm a burden to the team, and no matter how much it felt like I wasn't... trust me. I was.

So... we've seen T's opinion on it, here's mine.

For a BAF/Lambda, maybe even Keyes - I don't care if you're shifted or not. It's really only a problem if too many people bring lowbies (and yes, in this context, a 50 is a lowbie. )

For UG, I'll say it again, because I believe it so much: the single largest predictor of the success or failure of an UG trial is the number of unshifted characters on the league. Bring at LEAST a 50+1, preferably higher.

For MoM, TPN, and now DD, I'll just say it: The best I can hope for, if you bring a lowbie on one of these trials, is that you simply don't understand what a negative effect you are having on the league and its chance for success. Because if you DO understand that... then that means that you don't mind asking 15-23 other people to carry you around on their backs.

And that's MY opinion on the subject.
  9. Let's please not get off track here. Kult asked for help with a specific topic. Let's not start on an unrelated topic, ok?

    - If you'd like to open this for discussion, please start a topic. I've been thinking about doing that myself.
  10. As I said... if that's what I have to do... I will.

I do appreciate the advice, but if I can fix it without changing my settings, that'd be my first choice.
  11. That may end up being what I have to do (not starting on boot and not having it run in the background), but I like having it up to grab updates automatically, and it's not been a problem before this last week.

I would prefer to find a way to solve the current problem without changing those settings. Though I do understand your point.

    I.. ah... don't know.

I'm launching from the dock. It usually checks for updates and then I select CoH, Test, or Beta to start playing. When it doesn't check for updates it locks up.

    How I launch CoH:

I click the launcher icon in my dock. It SHOULD check for updates, then I select which game to play, and click play now. However....

What's happening when it locks up:

It will stay like this indefinitely. I have to use task manager to close it.

What I just noticed in my system tray:

NCSoft launcher is set to run in background, to automatically launch on startup, and to minimize after starting.

    Issue 22

I think the Beast Master will be my first. Not sure about the secondary - dark is easy... I dunno.

    And definitely a dark troller.
  14. Win7
not sure which service packs - but it does update automatically
    64 bit
    8 gigs
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NCSoft\Launcher
    C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes
    Yes, running as admin
    Admin account
    pink hipsters

When I first click the icon to load it up, it does NOT go through the "checking for updates" step. The frame appears for the game selection, but it freezes up before doing anything.

After I close it with task manager, then restart it... THEN it does the "checking for updates" thing, and starts up just fine.
  15. I will have to have the Beast Mastery.... AND a staff scrapper... and a Dark Troller....
  16. For the past few days (since it updated?), the launcher freezes up on me the first time I try to start it.

I have to use task manager to close it, then it will start up just fine.

Just me, or is this happening to anyone else?
  17. Like others said, I don't get the emails, which makes me very very sad.

Would you mind telling us what email address they come from so I can add it to my contacts? Just in case it's going to spam.
  18. I kinda like the idea. I don't know about the buy in... I think that would limit participation.

We can create our own drama here. We don't need to import it!
