I prefer calling it (in terms of CoH) my blastermasterscrapper
A sidenote to be added for the defensive powers, each scales with a certain stat (recovery, dexterty, condition, etcetc), so lets say a flame 'blaster' with little con will only gain a minor ammount of resist of invincibility then a Might (tankish set), who has really alot of condition. So you do prefer picking a set that suits your stats.
As for the 'ranged scrapper with tools', isnt that what every class eventualy is? Fire/kin troller starts ranged, moves melee, use kin tools. A elec/elec starts ranged, moves melee, drains end (tool). hench, even a freaking soldier in the army is one: has a gun, a knife and a grenade/radio. Those are simple the 3 tools of engaging combat.
Quote:U are unable to attack during that time, but it has no cooldown. So you can pop it on and off in times u need it (incomming stun or knockback, big dmg attack etc). You do still can move, but very slow (both walking, flying or jumping).Does holding down 'block' impact your ability to move and attack?
They can add tons of new maps or worlds or whatever in GR, eventualy you still will be in your own little dungeon, only see the 'big world' if u visit AH or travel to your next mission. Streethunt is only be seen in Atlas, so u can lvl up fast and start in King's Row on your 'dungeon grindfest'. -
The active blocking is a skill bound to your shift key. By default you have a pretty 'simple' block ability, wich grants a increase resistance to damage. (i believe about 1,5 times your base value). You can activate it by simply holding shift, release it and skill deactivates. A mob preparing a very strong attack shows a big mark above his head, perfect time to hit the shift button and reduce incomming damage.
Now some 'sets' have a block ability you can learn, wich have higher resistance or have additional knockback/hold/stun protection, one gives a random feedback damage, other give increased energy. Probaby others have other additional features to the block ability, but it remains the same basic.
Yet, wich Arcane i asume also know, the 'job' you choose affects the way you gain energy (or not). You can unlock a variaty of 'jobs' (or just call it builds) wich focus on certain elements. Balanced, Guardian, Offender and (i think) Supporter.Balanced, each block generates energy, however Offender wont gain anything from block, but have an increased energy gain from the 'energy gain power'. Supporter has no energy from attack or block, but have increased energy regen and reduced energy cost for heal/buff/support abilities.
Basicly, compare this to the errr.. (gaunlet, defiance, MM bodyguard, villiguelance) power of City of Heroes, but free to swap between them. The so called defensive abilities are also limited to these 'jobs', a defensive skill like invunerbility (20%ish resist) is only usable in balanse or guardian, but not in Offender or Support mode.
As for variaty in builds, its huge. My melee tank now also carries a gun and rocketlauncher, my ranged gadgeteer (has a few pets) also have melee abilities, without 'gimping' the character. And i really see hardly any equaly build people, sure there are some fotm's (regen rank3) but i hardly see anyone using the same powers except for the initial energy gain ability. -
Quote:Why is it worth waiting, if nobody even know where they are waiting for? (apart from a single trailer). Bugs i care little for, new gameplay/features is what i am after.A non-specific release date is BETTER.
What would people rather have? A GR release that was rushed to get it out for the 'promised time', or a GR release that came a little bit later, was more thoroughly tested and less bug-filled. Yes, there will still be bugs (I challange anyone to find a release of any sort that DIDN'T have any) but it'd be nice to have a smoother release than one that was rushed.
This is why I prefer films and games to be ready 'When they are Ready', and not before. Rushing things leads to failure.
And it amazes me people comparing the HERO/GURPS to a MMO, it doesnt matter wich rules are being used, its how it is presented to the player. CO has flaws, CoH lacks gameplay, thats my view on both. -
About the game mechanics, that is somewhat logical: you would be stupid to try reinventing the wheel if it already has been made.
However, more and more MMO's are trying to 'grab' those singleplayer combat aspects in a brave atempt to implement this into a MMO, wich is in certain cases quite an achievement.
The famous 'bullet time' AoC tried as 'fatality' move, single player this is fairly easy but in a multiplayer enviroment that is quite more difficult. The result aint the best, but they done a decent job of putting a single-player aspect into a MMO.
In CO for example they made a more 'fluid' transit of interacting with world-materials. Although this is already quite common in singleplayer games, they manage to make a transit from the pickup to the debree in your hands (unlike most MMO's, it despawns and suddenly spawns in your hand). Being the first doing so doesnt mean you already make it perfect.
Now for a big step, there is currently no MMO that i know off where you can actualy can grab, hold or trow your oponent away. As in CoH, you just recieve a XX ammount of knockback, but the 'entities' remain seperated.
Yet in Blade & Soul, NCsoft new MMO, they seem to have done the impossible, grab, hold, trow, punch, smash your oponent around the map (as the trailer shows, the reaper picksup the defeated guy, trows him up, grab him on his stych and trow him 100 yard down the mountain).
I agree, CO aint trully my favorite playstyle, but it shows a very fresh look at what can be done within a 'hero theme' and in wich ways you can innovate basic aspects of an MMO into a 'feeling new' mechanic. (as Arcane says, the auto-power that builds up your energy, this is basicly the melee 'white' damage of games such as WoW).
So how is this related to CoH? First of all, CoH always sticked to its original mechanics, solid and clear system with only tweaks (ED, new def vs hit etc), yet never game breaking. This is one side very nice, you always have the familiar feeling with the game knowing that what u played 4 years ago is still the same today (mechanic wise, moving, attacking, reacting etc). Other side however, as more MMO's seem to innovate their game (mount fights in WoW, AoC 'free combat', open skill-system of GW or CO etc) the 'familiar' system of CoH starts to feel somewhat old, basic and steady dispite the graphics.
What would be my dream? Imaging Bayonetta in MMO form, insane. -
Quote:Carefull what you say here, the 'can i have your st00f' fanbois are lurking this topic. For now I'm going to leave my main account active for GR beta; although as time passes with no information and the weather starts to get warmer, I'm less and less interested in GR. I'm definitely going to cancel my second account in the next week after I do some currency/recipe moving to the main one.
Sigh.... -
Indeed, little new information available. And quite odd, as GW2 and B&S are already shown several trailers while they are not even gonna launch very soon, Aion already showed the trailer of 3.0, again far from release. So even within the NCsoft divisions there are quite some differences
As for the post of Arcanaville, wonderfull saidI really cant say CO is perfect, it has quite alot of flaws (and probably some due the lag i have), but they imho pushed the 'hero concept and its mechanics' to a higher level then CoH currently is. Active defense, active fighting, huge variaty in choice of powers.

Quote:He was refering to game mechanics, that has little to do how to spent your time outside leveling in this game. Sure, you can say you do this all day, but face it.. the mechanics are getting way behind compared to what is offered today. But i dont really expect any massive change to the combat-system as it is today, neither GR or (if ever) CoH2.You mean like crafting IOs, building a Super Group base, writing your own missions in the AE building, roleplaying, etc?
Yeah, they should definitely add in the ability for us to do all that stuff I just said above.
Oh, wait...
And you may be all happy with the game as it is, but that has no single value to the future of this game (go play on europe servers, see how fast u get bored).
CO may not be the best game, but they show insane potential to what game mechanics 'hero games' can have, combined with the knowledge of B&S developers, they can lift this game to unseen heights. Instead, they linger on with the 'same ol.. same ol'.
Quote:One thing they need to do is update missions. Anyone remember the zone Dark (Whatever its called). It's dry and completely empty. They need to up the xp when street sweeping. Give like a boost when you have a team with you. It's gotten annoying seeing how dry most zones are now. I left for a couple months because it was always the samething. Sewer team, random team random team, Pling Pling. I feel like that dude up there. Just hanging around till the star wars mmo comes out.
Today, you dont see 90% of the playerpopulation, they are all in their 'own private little instance', the only odd time you see them is at the AH, MA or traveling to a mission. Already since newspaper missions zones became deserted, even if CoH was merely 1 huge zone, still you see a very very lonely and empty place, apart from people traveling from mission to mission (and merely adding a random room generator for some diversity).
The fact that basicly 1 person can whipe out 14-16 mobs on his own is part of this, a avarage tank could herd the entire map and still not die, only the agro-cap prevent this. People solo AV's, EB's are mere bosses with a bit more health, where is the difficulty in this whole game? Where is teamplay important, rather than just press your static powerbuttons and wait for FS to kick in again? -
Quote:And its not only the 'competition' that moves on to state-of-the-art graphics, NCsoft itself doing it also. With GW2, Aion and Blade&Soul, they already pushed their MMO's to nearly a new graphical standard for the MMO's.I remember when this game was fun.....like 3 years ago. This game is so bland and outdated. The time between issues is way to long. They only thing left to do with this game is argue the same boring arguments on these forums that have been argued for 5 years now. I look at the art and new tech in upcoming MMOs, and I wonder how anyone can stand playing this game anymore.
I figure I'll mess around with GR for a month or two....untill Star Wars Old Republic MMO comes out. Then this 5 year vet is gone for good. Wish they'd just admit this game is old and outdated and start on a new one.
If i look at Champions Online, how it looks and feels, it could have been CoH2. Although gameplay and content aint that huge yet, it feels 'new'. The 'push 1 button and wait for the next' is getting old, i dont feel really 'heroic' anymore if i have about 5 powers that i active in a 10second timeframe or standing there 10 seconds waiting for a power to come back from cooldown. And i have to give kudo's to CO for giving a better feeling of a 'hero' (straf while fighting, 'chargeup' powers, so many travel powers). Hell, even WoW has more 'action' atm.
So i hope GR aint only just a expension with 2 new sets and some extra content, but also a trashload of new game mechanics. If i put CoH against the trailers of GW2 or B&S (or even Aion 3.0 for that matter), what would be your 2010 game? -
Wich are entitled to hit major nerfs once they go live? Imho they should stop 'boosting' with enhancements slots, the difference between a 'full slotted' and a 'casual whoo i got a recipe!' slotted is already insane, dont push it even futher.
-
I did vote CO over CoH, simple fact they have noticiable progression in the game-development, currently i see CoH dead in its tracks (apart from some game mechanic stuff like superSK and such).
-
Is there a sort of timeframe in wich there will be more info about GR? Got 4 other games pounding on the door to be played, so i'm trying to plan this year wich game to play when
My playtime is often that late in the evening that i hardly can make or find a team, hopefully GR going to boost that somewhat. -
8. The Most Anticipated MMO is...
Where is Blade & Soul? -
So now we got free transfers within 1 continent, can we at least get paid EU-NA/NA-EU transfers?
It got so little use to transfer between empty, nearly empty, deserted and very empy servers. -
Quote:I do wonder, why apart from the 'few big names', non of all the other fallen heroes of Omega Team ever got into the game on a earlier point. A villain fighting along the heroes would be quite a history point for the rogue island people, of Crey trying to rebuild the robot dude, its all so sudden and clearly they all are forgotten (in a rather short time).I love the The Prestidigitator's, Tin Mage's, and Ruin's letters.
The Prestidigitator actually almost got me teary eyed for a second though as he's just a guy with a wand who feels outclassed by every hero around him on the Omega team but he goes on this suicide mission and promises to fight to his dying breath. Truly great writing
I really like the letters 'as if', but they now start to feel more like nice spin-off stories than that they actualy 'fit' in the game. (like the mission you read a letter of your pretorian self). -
Remember me, remember Ill Wind, 'cause that's all I got left.
This line, i sooooo love.
I do hope, apart from the current heroes saved (well, except for 1), more eventualy will show up being still ok. -
Yes offcourse, i will transfer about 12 characters for like 15USD each
(then i still leave alot behind).
See, the irony with WoW, i remember not long ago Devs here were mocking WoW for 'copying' their dual-spec idea, along with the server/faction transfering. However, WoW now made 1 step beyond CoH, cross-server teaming. Easy to say, Guildwars done this ages ago already, never the less WoW became yet again worth the money.
First i played Union, no defiant was better. So i continue Defiant, due <i wont name this here specific, but lets say 'farmers' and the 'system'> Union became the big shot again.. so i should transfer yet AGAIN? -
Quote:Yes, why not spent even more money? With the fee i paid already i can probably keep all people in this topic active untill CoH2 will be released, why spent even more money if NC is plain to ignorant to even look at certain accounts, that missed the loyalty badge or 60month vet due any reason beyond their (or actualy within NC's) control? If you buy Going Rogue as pre-order you will also come into the Beta. Why not do that as soon as its possible?
GR may just be 'just a new feature', for me it still holds faith i can stay on the EU servers. All my villains are just standing there in a totaly deserted place, no reply to whispers, no one free to join my team, like some freaking single player game.
this is a MMO and i play this game for the first M, i dont mind the money if i can play within a 'massive' envoriment, yet clearly NC just doesnt seem to care. -
Quote:Why astounded? I know alot of folks that just hang around month of month hoping for something better. Part of the 'better' was this loyalty program, along with the ninja-pack.I just heard something that caused me to wonder if anyone was actually quitting over not getting a badge for continuous payment during X amount of time because they didn't follow the rules for getting the badge.
Now I know that it is happening.
I am truly astounded by this fact even though I know I shouldn't be.
Few leave due several reasons, remaining folks have even less people to team up with, they leave also (where this 'rule' might be a easy reason to do so).
Again, its easier to speak if you're at the 'good side', people that looking forward to getting into GR beta waited several months to eventualy hear: sorry 1 day u didnt pay, dispite you are 56 months, NO ACCES!
Im among the most spent on this game people, i dont mind. But what do i get for it at the end of the line? Delayed betas and deserted servers. -
After seeing today the new trailer of Aion, i dont see any reason to wait for that beta to come, even if i'm selected in all 3 tiers. I probably can easy say i'm among the people that spent the most on this game, and what you get? Delayed crap.
-
Quote:Its not really the game, its the way NC is managing it.If all it takes to quit the game is a single badge, that you do absolutely nothing to earn outside of paying your bill on time (which some folks are apparently having issues with), then maybe CoX just isn't a good fit. There are far more challenging badges to earn than this one.

Quote:Just got a reply from support on this:From when the program was announced some time ago;
I'd imagine this means that we're getting the same thing on our own server, but that's open to interpretation, I suppose. I'm just happy at Avatea saying we'll get a beta.
The 60 + month game time needed for the tier one Going Rogue Beta Access is
calculated the same way for EU and US City of Heroes game accounts. Also, game time
can not be transferred between separate game accounts.
So how many 60+ EU players we have? And still active? -
Quote:Yes offcourse, like the recent 'open beta' eh?From when the program was announced some time ago;
I'd imagine this means that we're getting the same thing on our own server, but that's open to interpretation, I suppose. I'm just happy at Avatea saying we'll get a beta.
In short, no reason at all to leave my EU subs going then. -
-
Is there yet an answer to that tier 1/3 beta acces stuff regarding EU players?
(the 60month playtime stuff).
I'm getting pretty fed up with all this US above EU crap (yes they started it yesterday on Aion also).
