Most notably is the lack of personal defense (because defense in PvP does nothing for ranged characters) and the lack of AoE's as their damage is completely gutted in the PvP enviornment.

If its just to get the accolades and incarnates for the build, you really don't need a pve build for it. But if its something you regularly pve with then a second build is definitely a solid idea.
Thanks for all the help and support. With COH shutting down, this all seems mute at this point. Hopefully I will find another game as good as COH. Thank you all for trying to help me get started on PvP. I do appreciate it and will miss you all!

Wow looks really good. 2 questions. What are the other incarnates you'd recommend besides for alpha-intuition? Second.....why are pvp toons so squishy in PVE zones? Looks like it's going to be tough for it to survive to work on incarnes/accolades before starting to pvp in zone.

PvP is a team oriented enviroment. The worst players are often the first to challenge you to a 1 v 1 to prove they are better. 1 v 1's have 3 checks.

First, basic knowledge check. Do you know how to press 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 on a target as much as possible as fluidly as possible while following them around for 10 minutes. Do you know how and when to pop greens and use the least amount possible / hibernate / phase at the last possible safe moment? If so, move on to the build check. Do you have capped HP, damage procs, enough acc to hit your opponent, etc etc. If so, the final check is knowing your opponent and what he or she is capable of. Do they have a build you can beat? Some builds simply won't lose to other builds if the first two checks are made by both parties.

Knowing all this, Congratulations you are now a top tier duelist in CoH. The fourth final secret "check" to meet is the RNG check. Assuming your opponent is on the same skill level as you, has a build that is on the same level as yours its now up to random to hit rolls and random proc chances to see who wins. Which is why PvP in this game is team based.

As an additional note, within the current system, everything that makes for a strong team pvp'er carries over into what makes someone a strong duelist. However, starting out as a duelist nearly always leads to being a very poor team PvP'er.

With a Water/EM you seem to have chosen the role of damage dealer in a PvP setting.

As a damage dealer, your goal is to quickly tab onto the target that is announced by the target caller. The quickest way I've found to do this is rather than randomly hit tab, move your mouse (and by extension your screen) so that the target occupies as space that has as few other targets in it as possible. Next you wait for the spike count, as the count down begins, your goal is to close the gap on the target (as following them too soon will give away the spike) and put out as much damage as quickly as possible with the rest of the offense. While doing this, you must also watch your character as well to look for incoming spikes and run away accordingly. If and when you take damage, with practice you will learn how many (if any at all) greens you need to pop in order to survive with or with out heals from support characters on your team.

This concludes lesson one and the very basics of CoH PvP.
I appreciate the lesson. I have some work to do. Practice is going to be key here as far as using greens and learning the last possible moment to use phase/hibernate. I know my build needs some work. I just need some help with that to get it up to par for KB protection and such as I'm not familiar with how to construct and manipulate builds. I've always had someone make builds for me. Just unfortunately they aren't experienced with pvp builds. However in looking, how in the heck can I get a 41 in KB protection? Is that the real number I should be aiming for?

I've always been good on ranged toons which is why I selected a blaster. However I'm hearing it would be better if I chose a corruptor or defender which would give me the ability to debuff and deal damage. Any thoughts on this?

I'm a sponge and eager to hear any feedback.

    Thanks!

I have a way of earning money so that's not an issue. I'm aware that a good pvp build is rather expensive. I'm prepared for that. And I will work on my patience. I know it's not something I'll grasp overnight. Will take time and practice.

I'll be honest with you, we may be deemed terrible by the other teams but at least we give it a good show. We like to experiment, a lot, and not that afraid to get our teeth kicked in. You learn more by failure than having an experience team carry you, like I have seen in the past two years of my Team PvP experience. Granted I might not know every single mechanic out there, but I do know a bit of common sense within the arena.

I would be willing to let you into our practices so you may get a 'feel' of what it is like to be spiked sloppily or perhaps to teach you how to evade like a little girl, but that is all up on your attitude. I don't take those unwilling to sweat debt or cry when they get Soul Stormed because they forgot how to teleport out.

Edit: In regards to your build, you may want to take another gander at it. For starters, you need to go for capped resistance, although defense may seem fine and dandy, psionics will tear that thing up (also if you were building for defense 45 is soft cap for regular pve play). Your KB protection is also a problem, does wonders when you have only one psionic thrust doing about 6pts of KB or so? But imagine a stacked spike, you'll be flopping like a fish. Even so, one Force Bolt from a Bubbler Def does 18 pts. 41 is your magic number. Fly might seem like a decent choice, but from my honest opinion, I would believe it to be a bit hard to maneuver in a team match and you will be 'air-grounded' too long for comfort trying to spin around getting to your target. Stick to Capped SS and SJ.

Granted all of this information is provided by a very terrible Stalker.
Why is my attitude so bad? I'm just discouraged at the lack of support/community. I don't mind getting my teeth knocked in and learning as things go along. However I don't possess the BASE of any pvp skill or knowledge. Everyone is expecting me to be an expert on builds and mids when all I know about Mids is how to view a build and print it. Like I mentioned in another post I've never made my own build in Mids nor do I know how.

With that being said.....yes I'm a total noob. But am willing to learn. Just want to learn the right way. Not thrown in and left to sink or swim as that type of mentality causes rage quits.

Guys I appreciate the info and help thus far. Some things I didn't mention previously that you should know.........I don't know how to make builds. I've always had a friend make them for me. Unfortunately he doesn't know how to build for pvp. I basically know nothing about how to make adjustments using Mids. I do have some basic understanding of what the IOs work for..ie: LOTG for defense. So when you tell me to update my build, it's not as easy for me to do.

My next question is.....is this even a good power combination or should I create an entirely new toon? I'm open to the idea. I just have no clue what is successful in pvp. I've just always been better at ranged toons.

But they are all a bunch of terrible players with a fightclub mindset and will most likely teach you how to PvP in a way that involves no fun, no skill and encourages the use of no inspirations as well as travel suppression and heal decay.

As far as I can see what you're basically asking for is some mentor to just stay by your side and teach you how to get good at PvP in a matter of days. This game isn't hard, once you have a basic understanding of how the system works you should be able to at least be an average PvPer without very much effort at all. Which is why I pointed you in the direction of team 'Fat Kids' who have leaders who do have somewhat of a knowledge on the game and the current PvP system that they could pass on to you. Me saying that they have terrible players doesn't change the fact that its a team that could help you get an understanding of PvP. Besides if you even bothered to log in around 9PM+ maybe some other captains, myself included would have taken the time out to help answer any of your questions in between practices.
I never said you were completely unhelpful. First off I asked if 9pm et is the only time most pvp'rs are on. That never got answered. I am in ET zone so it's not just a flip of the switch to change my schedule where work is involved. However I'm willing to do that if that's the best time. I'm willing to be flexible here I just wanted some help. It's no fun getting constantly ganked and not knowing why. Nor is it easy to just make a build when you don't know what you are doing. You assume too much. You expect me to come in with a thorough knowledge of builds and such and jump right in on a team to learn the mechanics of PvP. My understanding is that it takes time BEFORE you can even go into zone.....getting your T4 incarnates and accolades to be successful. Crawl before you walk. Walk before you run. Run before you fly. If you think my attitude is bad, then I simply apologize. I just feel that I'm getting half info and people not understanding what I'm looking for.

Perhaps I should hold off on pvp until it's fixed. Their his a huge amount of secrecy and unhelpful attitudes in the current pvp players. Unlike PVE where help is abundant, PVP is left wanting. It's too bad. It's a part of the game that has the potential to be a lot of fun. Oh well back to my PVE life. Thanks to those that provided feedback thus far. So your best bet it to get on a team, follow them around, and attack the people they say to attack.

Zone PvP in CoH boils down to numbers. Whichever side has more people wins. Almost always. So two things can happen when you go in a zone...

    1. You try to solo (or duo with a "mentor"), get owned 50 times in a row by 5-8 people at a time, and quit in disgust, thinking that PvP in CoH is a total joke.
    2. You join a full team, gang up on people that are trying to solo, and own them 50 times in a row until they cry and leave the zone. Then you get to think that PvP is awesome and you're really good at it.

#2 is a lot more fun
I agree #2 is more fun....unfortunately I haven't met a team that wouldn't mind a pvp noob tagging along. I understand people take PVP very seriously but there doesn't seem to be a good environment in which to learn. Was hoping perhaps there is a SG or VG that specializes in PVP out there that would be willing to take me under their wing. So far no luck. It's a bit discouraging to be honest.

TS- travel supression - in pvp zones (and arena unless turned off) - you are supressed when you attack, you are supressed when you get attacked, you are supressed when you heal, buff, etc...it slows your max speed down to a crawl for x number of seconds (or in the case of some toggle debuffs like rad) forever till you die

HD - Heal Decay - another brilliant Idea- basically the more you try to heal the less you do heal (I think it is a 9 second wait time) easiest explanation - say each tier 1 green heals you for 100. You pop 4 in a row you heal for 400. Heal Decay (again in zones and arena if not turned off in arena) - you pop 4 greens in a row you heal for 100 - 66 - 33 - 0 -

DR - Dimishing Returns - again zone and arena only (unless turned off in arena) reduces everything - say you maxed out your recharge at 200% - dr will drop that to 66% (i am not being exact here but pretty close). There is some complicated caculus level type equation people have for showing dr but just know what you have in pve is not what you have in pve.

Thank you for those explanations....it helps a lot!

    PVP training

I'm really looking for one-on-one mentoring. Don't think a team environment would be as effective. Someone who can monitor my play style and provide critique on my individual play style/power selection. If it takes payment of influence to accomplish this, I'm willing to do so. Or also I'd be willing to join a PVP super group that could help.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Keep em coming. Any feedback is better then no feedback.

On that note you should contact the captain of team Fat Kids as they are making a team for this 5v5 league based mainly around the idea of teaching new players how to PvP.

You mention wanting to know how to PvP the right way, whatever you do do NOT become one of the zoners who refuse to arena with TS and HD turned off and no inspirations. Turning off TS and HD is a norm within arena PvP'ers as is the use of small inspirations.
What is TS and HD? Not sure what those are abbreviations are for.

I will try to contact that person. However being I'm on east coast time, would be hard for me to stay up so late in the evening. Is that the only time things are happening in the pvp world?

    PVP training

I'm a long time PVE player looking to get into PVP. Right now I'm planning on using my blaster - water/em. I had a friend make a second build for me so I can switch from my PVE build to a PVP build.

I'm looking for someone to help be a mentor and teach me about PVP the RIGHT way. I play on Freedom currently. Anyone willing to help? I'll share my PVP build to anyone who wants to mentor me for critique. Pop a post here or contact me in game global is @Shield-Strength

Thanks in advance for the help!!
  22. I'm looking to start playing PVP in zones such as RV and need a build in order to learn on. I'm open to suggestions. I've heard regen is good. However as I have no experience in PVP I'm open to any suggestions. If any good pvp'er is out there and could post a Mids build, I would appreciate it. I'm willing to trade influence for the right build. Looking for high resistance along with high damage. Once again I'm brand new to PVP so any help is appreciated.

Luminous Blast: Glinting Eye, Glinting Blast, Proton Scatter, Luminous Detonation, Radiant Strike, Incandescent Strike, Inner Light, Dawn Strike, Photon Seekers, Gleaming Bolt
Luminous Aura: Incandescence, Essence Boost, Shining Shield, Reform Essence, Light Form
    Speed: Hasten, Super Speed
    Leaping: Combat Jumping, Super Jump
Concealment: Grant Invis, Invisibility, Phase Shift (Yes I have not respeced this toon in awhile so I still run that instead of the other luminou aura phase fly power)
    Leadership: Assault, Tactics

    Awesome....thank you for posting!

I'm def open to that. I just need a build though first.
