Quote:Some of the definitions of "plastic" as an adjective:The "plastic" in "plastic surgery" is an adjective, not a noun.
Biology Capable of building tissue; formative.
Surgery. concerned with or pertaining to the remedying or restoring of malformed, injured, or lost parts: a plastic operation.
IIRC, the oldest and most basic definition would be: capable of being molded or of receiving form: clay and other plastic substances.
Plastics as a noun were named that because they are so moldable and malleable.
Anyway, when your level is below the teens or so the tailor is cheap enough something as basic as changing a category (like Head, Upper Body, Lower Body, etc.) or even several of them is affordable. Changing just your face will be even less expensive. -
Quote:Oh ye of little knowledge. Time and again it almost appears that people tend to think that lack of experience gives them special insights. i do not work as a game developer, but i have a passing interest in the craft, so i've paid attention over the years. i have seen many game/expansion demos shown at various events (like E3) that were far more complete than what was shown at Hero Con that still took another year to be ready for release. i'm fairly confident that GR is farther along than that since they've been working on it for much more than a year, but videos showing power animations is not the same as a ready for release powerset. Nor is having the basic architecture of one zone ready the same as populating it and having all the zones, mission arcs and NPCs finished. Demon Summonig at Hero Con wasn't far enough along that there was anything but concept art ready for display. My stance isn't that they're not doing anything, I specifically do not believe that it takes the entire dev team to work on an expansion that is probably mostly done ( I mean what we saw at Hero Con was pretty far along ) my stance is more that they're not doing enough.
I believe that we should see at least another Issue release before the release of Going Rogue or as an alternative some worth while content updates. I get the feeling a large half of the dev team is just floating around and not doing anything.. You'll also notice a lot of people and a lot of the community actually agrees with me on this.. So, you know.. Yeah..
Frankly I just expect more. City of Heroes has never been that impressive compared to any other game ( World of Warcraft, EverQuest or what have you ) where they're pumping out expansions left and right and it's actual huge updates to their content adding new things and all I just don't see that on City of.. Rather, I see it done on an entirely unimpressive and pitiful scale that could most certainly be done better.
I'm a little peeved too that I ended up spending $60 on City of Villains ( back when I bought it if you wanted to play a Villain having the disc was mandatory ) and then turned around and said "Well actually we've randomly decided that you can play villains without the disc! So those of you that bought it basically gave us $60 for virtually nothing at all! Isn't that great?" yeah, not so much..
City of seems like it could do a lot of things better and it just feels to me like the team doesn't apply themselves adequately. Like they're doing it less than even halfway and thinking everyone's going to be content with that forever. They're not.. They aren't.. Trust me, it's not just me that feels this way.
If you think having a few concept/tech demos ready is equivalent to being nearly ready for release you really haven't bothered to learn anything about how videogames are created. And the Devs have continued to work on other things when not directly occupied with GR work, or haven't you noticed some of the bug fixes and additions in the past several months? -
Quote:That would be quite the Ood commute.Hope that'd doesn't turn into another fad like City Of Neo (when trenchcoats came out).
...otherwise my morning commute is going to look like this....
Now that you mention it, i would definitely give it a try myself, but using a different spin on the Rikki Tikki Tavi name. -
It's been quite a while, but if i recall correctly the original concept was to set up matches at the terminal, then go into the center room and be transported to the arena map from there. You might notice that the effect used when teleporting into a match is very similar to the effects in the unused room beneath the arena. Basically it was supposed to be a big transporter room for getting to PvP matches. Of course it was changed so that you would be teleported to the arena map from anywhere once you joined a match and the room became superfluous.

Quote:Going with a DM/ELA/Mu with Tough using Reactive Armor and a few other sets. Should be interesting once i get it built. This is how I look at it as well.
Specifically for Ela using reactive armors means you can slot 4 sets of 4 + a 5th set if you take tough, which you probably will.
Then depending on what options your primary gives you for slotting, you can make your decision from there. -
Quote:Yeah, I don't think 12 points would be enough against motherships.Quote:I agree, which is why I wrote this: "You might make a marginally superior Rikti hunter with Fire, but DM/ELA simply shines everywhere in the game."
ELA still needs to be augmented beyond adding Tough for a great many enemy groups other than Rikti. DM fills that gap, and then some, for the rest of the game's content. -
Quote:Oh, so the Star Strider thing was the player-organized Rikti spanking? i joined in that, i just didn't realize it was called "Star Strider" (odd name for a battle against invaders from a parallel Earth) and missed all the Dev posts promoting it. It was very fun taking down all those dropships on Champion and Virtue though.Quick response:
The Champion server's video says it all > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO8tbKvto1I
Long response:
Yep, I can personally attest to the fact that it was a "Whole lotta setup." =P
It was not easy but it was a blast. This year will be our 3rd registering folks for Star Strider Forces. The last two, we took American_Valor up on the Dropship Challenge and defeated:
- 41 Dropships (blueside), Nov 20th 2008
- 28 Dropships (redside), July 17th 2009
- 60 Dropships (blueside), July 18th 2009
We were not the only server. American_Valor spearheaded Liberty server and _Cherry_ organized the Champion server.
That's the beauty in it all - we're creating our own adventure using our favorite characters and the available environment. If it is a scheduled Invasion week, we'll work on breaking our previous records with old and fresh faces. If it is a modified event or entirely new experience then we're getting a headstart on the time-consuming task of assembling an army reserve.
Come join us anytime: http://tinyurl.com/RageAgainstTheRikti -
Quote:Fighting Rikti is one area where ELA is definitely not squishy. Rikti damage is mostly energy, against which ELA normally has capped resistances. Against almost every other enemy ELA might be a bit squishy, but definitely not against Rikti.Soul Drain might still provide DM with superior ST DPS despite the resistance disparity, and with several targets or saturated it will have superior burst damage as well, quickly outpacing Build Up. Fire will always offer superior AoE damage to DM.
The one downside to Fire is its total lack of mitigation given the still-squishy nature of ELA. Energize did wonders, but the set is still at the bottom of the pack for raw survivability. You might make a marginally superior Rikti hunter with Fire, but DM/ELA simply shines everywhere in the game.
As for the KB, even without Grounded being active it's fairly easy to get 12 points or more of KB protection with some IO usage. -
Quote:Uh... Either you've been wearing the metaphorical rose-colored glasses until very recently, or you haven't been reading the same forums i have. Or possibly you consider anything less than unrelenting bile and venom to be sycophantic. Then your assertion makes sense. The forums are for all players, even negative responses. It's more refreshing than the sycophantic ones we've been getting over the past year.
Carry on. -

Ummm, high school was over for me a loooong time ago,and you seem to belive heavly in proper grammar, but,i dont. The fact that you even go on ..and on....and on...about grammar may mean a number of things.
Either you are trying to get a passive emotional response from my self,or others,or your simply bored, and feel you are a superiour being compaired to the rest of us,which is hard to prove by pointing out spelling and punctuation.
I caution you though.....Im a expert at making a *BLEEP* of my self on rare moments that life gets me down, but by no means does it mean your free of that rederict.
Ohhh, almost forgot! The way a person spells, uses comma's,ect....doesnt reflect on there overall intellegence,it just means they have bad writting habits.Habits im fine with. -
Quote:Wait, what "Star Strider" thing?Yeah, it is. Hate to be the one to rain on the parade, but anyone remember the "Star Strider" thing running across all servers last year? The devs giving each server various tasks and things to protect?
Whole lotta setup, and that went nowhere.
Somehow i apparently missed that completely, as in i don't recall ever hearing it mentioned.
No real loss if nothing ever came of it. -
Quote:The Rikti still have to deal with overcoming the magical barrier walling off their dimension and teleportation tech (zones largely being arbitrary anyway) is not the same as interdimensional travel. Our "teleporter" tech is scavenged Rikti tech, so I would not use that as much of an example. Then again I see Teleport and Portal tech as two very different things.
Putting the Rikti behind us in a portal tech scale does them a great injustice. They can setup micro portals at will for troop movement between zones. At best we have to setup massive arrays to do the same thing (Oddly, Vanguard seems to break this rule and may be a sign of portal tech improvement on our side.) While the portal tech may not be more advanced than ours I can not see it as being any less advanced.
Of course...this does not count Magic portals as this is the key point where we shine over the Rikti. -
Quote:i mostly agree with this, but would be fine with the invulnerable locked/wallpaper doors blocking off some areas as long as the overall layout made some sort of sense. Currently the majority of building maps resemble strange caves with office decor and paneling. Some things make sense to be random - caves, for example. Caves are random things that come into existence by the power of water to dissolve stone. They should be quite random and still logical.
The lairs built into caves should be somewhat random, though only certain types of cave shapes should get "logical" pieces built into them. The multilayer room found in some of the Council lair maps is pretty logical. The weird staircase/multilevel/trapped inside till you go back up the staircase aren't very.
Some things should be logical and, if random, only within very constrained parameters. Office buildings are like this. Elevator placements especially.
Both logical labs and crazy/random ones would make sense depending on plotline: logical for businesses, crazy/random for mad scientists' secret labs...
There are already a few logical, nonrandom maps, like the casino map, the pawnshop, the map for the salvage run in the University tutorial.
It's not as bad as you imply... there are compromises that would improve things for both the commenters above. Examples of random map generation that makes sorta-enough sense can be found in games and other applications long before CoH was even begun to be developed.
There's a feel to, specifically, the office maps in CoH that give the impression they were purposely created to give you the feeling you were in a crazy maze office, not a real one. Doors that are painted on and don't open, the rooms they look like they should be leading to: nonexistent. Hallways that dead end. Stair cases and balconies and especially the elevators that go to one next floor. What about a map with an elevator bank, where each one goes to a different floor? Where all the floors are similar so it looks like they're really one above the next in an actual building? Where the doors all click to open or are destroyable like jail doors, and 'doors' aren't used as wallpaper?
Twisty, meandering passages work for underground complexes mostly built into existing cave systems and tunnels, but not so much in office buildings. -
Quote:In addition to the Omega team taking out the Rikti portal generators the Midnighters and other mystics used magic to build and reinforce dimensional barriers around the Rikti home dimension. It would appear that the Rikti have rebuilt the generators on the homeworld and with enough power stored up can briefly punch through the barriers as well as knock out the War Walls. It's possible that this requires the aid of the massive power and portal generators deep in the crashed Mothership helping to open and anchor the dimensional portals. Establishing stable portal anchors is probably one of the main functions of the motherships besides being mobile fortresses and air support.I have to disagree. Millions of 1-2 person portals would be much more efficient than building a massive superstructure, lifting it into the sky, moving it between dimensions only to open portals to send your troops down.
The argument could me made that the mothership is a launching platform for Dropships. However these were not used in the first war, and based on the size of the Dropships vs the size of the Mothership it seems unlikely it is the current source of the ships. -

i'm not entirely certain i'll have time to level one up before whatever is coming happens, but it's not a bad idea at all. DM was more conceptually relevant at the time i started Thunder Locust, but now with power customization i can easily see Fire/Elec working as well.

Quote:One word: Tentacles!I have a feeling it may be costume pieces that were normally merged with other areas, being given their own area so we can put more on each character, ie tails being removed from belts and being given their own Tails category/option. Thereby allowing you to have a belt and a tail. Same possibly for horns and whatnot.
Just one guess based on some comments I've seen a dev or two make.
But personally, besides more costume pieces, I'd love having more limb options (maybe spider legs on your back as just a normal option for any character) and then of course I'd love to have another powers like some of the other packs have given.
Two words: Tentacles everywhere!
(Then i can bring Cephalopod Man back out of obscurity.)

Quote:In its entirety:I took fish-head to the movie. I didn't have to pay to get it in.
Fish heads, fish heads,
Rolly-polly fish heads,
Fish heads, fish heads,

Rolly-polly fish heads,

In the morning,
Laughing happy fish heads,
In the evening,
Floating in the soup!
Fish heads, fish heads,
Rolly-polly fish heads,
Fish heads, fish heads,
Eat them up, yum!
Ask a fish head
Anything you want to,
They won't answer,
They can't talk!
Fish heads, fish heads,

Fish heads, fish heads,
Eat them up, yum!
I took a fish head

Fish heads, fish heads,
Eat them up, yum!
They can't play baseball,
They don't wear sweaters,
They're not good dancers,
They don't play drums!
Fish heads, fish heads,
Rolly-polly fish heads,
Fish heads, fish heads,
Eat them up, yum!
Rolly-polly fish heads
Are never seen drinking cappuccino
In Italian restaurants,
With Oriental women, yeah!
Fish heads, fish heads,
Rolly-polly fish heads,
Fish heads, fish heads,
Eat them up, yum!

(i have an alternate version that goes, "Phish-heads, Phish-heads, Rolly-polly Phish heads, Beat them up, fun!" And so on...) -
i usually leave it on the base setting with bosses added until the late 20's on most of my Defenders, but my mid thirties Traps/Dark is more about +0/x3 w/bosses. My Dark Miasmists are far more likely to run at x4 to x8.
For more single target focused secondaries i'd go more +2/x2 to x3.
For my FF/Rad i just generally avoided soloing. i should dig that one up sometime and try her again in this new age of IO's and more granular difficulty settings. -
With the various hints being dropped by the Devs and Mods of some sort of major Rikti offensive coming soon, possibly including a return of the Motherships from CoH's end of beta event, i've been thinking about a flying version of my Rikti-hunter DM/Elec Brute. Even if it's just for taking out the dropships.
The main question i have is whether it's better to use Hover and slot for movement bonuses or is it better to accept the suppression and use Fly when attacking mobile airborne targets like dropships? (Combat Jumping would minimize the time spent getting back up to pursuit speed if i use Fly.) -

Quote:Yep. (Also, fixed.Isn't there a law of nature that states something akin to, "If you're going to write about proper grammer and spelling, you will make a grammer/spelling mistake"? I'm certain there is, since I haven't seen a post that does correct someone's spelling or grammar, do so without a spelling/grammar error.
Even my own.) However, i was advocating trying to follow the basic rules of grammar and spelling when posting, not suggesting that anyone without perfect grammar and spelling should be cast out of the internets and hurled into the outer darkness for all eternity.
Occasional typos and grammatical mistakes in forum posts are expected and passed over without comment. Hell, our Doyen of Digits, one of the most accomplished posters in the forums, Arcanaville herself, tends to omit apostrophes and frequently makes a few other minor punctuation and spelling errors. Her posts are otherwise so clearly and articulately written that a few minor errors doesn't stop her meaning from being clear, regardless of whether you actually understand the math that usually accompanies it. -
-
Literacy is not inherently arrogant and snobbish. Often it's not so much snobbery as posts that are full of erratic punctuation, bad spelling and incoherent grammar are difficult for everyone else to read. In a text format like online forums what you write is effectively the face you show to everyone else.
If your writing is the equivalent of showing up to a meeting in vomit-spattered clothing while staggering about slurring your words no one is going to take what you post very seriously.
You don't have to write like you're trying for a Pulitzer, but just making an effort to get the basics right does make it easier to read and posts that are hard to read tend to get ignored by everyone else. (In my case i have a bit of a cheat: i use Firefox, and it automatically highlights misspelled words for me.)
That said, write the way you want to write. Who cares what anyone else thinks?
