Samuel, yours I like. I mean it, it was like watching a scientist do an analytical breakdown of guided meditation and making sense of it.

Scarlet, yours I Love. I wanted to post to thank you for this, and honestly a little bumping will help others find it. I find the hope and personal responsibility of self-empowerment truly inspiring. This is really a beautiful way to see any world, especially one I spend so much time in.

So much so, it's managed to touch a bit on how I see the "real" one too, to a surprisingly personal level. In a way, sitting here in the afterthoughts, I'm wondering whether I might do good to spend a few moments finding my own well inside me, and be a little bit more of a hero to those in my tiny corner of life. It's just the way you wrote the thoughts and feelings, it was easy to feel them internally, I suppose.

Regardless... to both of you: Thank you, sincerely.

thanks both for a vote of confidence and I'm glad you liked. sorry for the slight delay in replying but I don't often hang out here - I guess I should huh?

Anyway, I'm glad my version has had such a positive response.

Just checked and that's a fix. Thanks Sam

Whenever I face a situation like this, I consider it a failure on my part, and it's not very pleasant, even when I can win.

Actually, run the Mender Tesseract SF some time. Yes, I know she's an insufferable *****, but do it anyway. The second mission in that TF has you fighting in a tournament of sorts, squaring off against I believe three to five VERY tough bosses in succession. If you leave the mission (i.e. if you die) the mission resets itself and you start back at the first boss. Now THAT is a fight you can't bullrush. Either you fight the whole thing from beginning to end properly, or you don't win at all. The rest of the TF isn't very good, but that bit is exactly how I'd want to see boss battles go.

The game actually has the tech to do this even if you don't leave the mission. Remember the "leashing" tech? The one where enemies become untargetable, return to their spawn points and become targetable again at full health and all powers recharged? Do that with bosses. Force players to fight a boss such that if the players all run away or the boss loses aggro for, say, 30 seconds, he recovers back to full and the fight resets. That's the kind of difficulty I'd see as fair.

As an option, of course. I have nothing against "hardcore mode" as a concept, even in City of Heroes. If some players feel they're badass enough to attempt it, then why not. Honestly, that's another difficulty setting to me, and so long as I don't have to use it, then I honestly have no problem with it. I'm not against other people facing consequences for their failures. I'm against me facing consequences for mine
I thought I'd run it... maybe I'll have to give it a go on Huntsman Strauss... though I don't recall the leashing tech you speak of.

A bit more seriously, I agree about e-mail item claiming. That's a horror show, because those items never seem to use the e-mail body to put in their description and you can't really mess with the size of your e-mail columns. I feel that using e-mails to do this was a mistake to begin with. It needed a better system, one that's a bit better suited to being browsed, or at least one that's full-screen with more real estate.

As for mouse scrolling, have you checked what your mouse scroll speed is set to? The UI has this quirk where you can enable mouse wheel scrolling as an option, but its scroll speed still remains stuck at either 0 or 1, which essentially doesn't scroll. I'm a transplant to the Black Country (just by Brum) and it's not nearly as black as it's caricatured but I know what you mean.

Email in general is a nightmare I feel. Guild Wars got that so right and CoH gets it so wrong, and yet the way the Vault system has been implemented would be very easy to transfer/store additional stuff, and more importantly, browse it.

I'll check the scroll thing. That could be (part of) the problem.
  8. Sam I suspect (but can't confirm) you and I have a different perspective to most players. I know that often we come from opposing sides of what we want from the game, neither right or wrong but simply different.

I love doing the tough stuff and adding extra levels of challenge - and a trip back from the hospital is a bit frustrating but no biggie. What I hate is just plugging away and getting nowhere - dysfunctional teams are one example; where the team wipes so everyone charges back into the map and tries to solo the boss that took the team out and fails to coordinate. But getting my posterior handed to me in an epic fight and then picking up the challenge again is great fun. It took me 65 hours total (that time included sleep, doing rl stuff and a couple of alted trials etc) to solo the ITF and 50 defeats but I nailed the ******* in the end and really enjoyed it.

In general, I think it's awesome how many people this game can cater for - so many different expectations, requirements and so many different people who remain subscribed because it works for them.

What I could probably enjoy a lot is an option where you fail a mission/task/trial and your character is killed - effectively deleted. It would have to be totally Opt In, and would need to be optional - so therefore probably a solo/small team. If you succeed, you get an epic reward, but if you fail your character is locked out of the game and archived (probably so you can cannibalise them.) I can't ever see that happening and there are certain characters - Scarlet Shocker for example - that wouldn't ever run it for fear of failing and I wouldn't take the risk with her. But I would love that option. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if I'm unique in that though.

(Tangent: As I typed this maybe the mission is the "Ultimate Sacrifice" where you have to die to save the world... or something... but that's sidetracking. Success there means... well if you failed that and didn't save the world, would it end?)
  9. I don't know if I'm unique in this, but I'm increasingly struggling with the UI for a number of reasons. It's getting tougher to navigate - with an excess of clutter that is quite tough to sort through.

A few examples are - but that's by no means definitive:
    1. Character Item email: loads of stuff in there now. I've bought a few super packs, I've bought some IOs from the market and stuff and when I am searching for something there it's a nightmare. Scrolling down is clunky (mouse scrolling doesn't work for me, is that a bug or WAI?) and the inability to move the bar between item and description means I've got a very narrow space to look in
    2. Temp/Inherent Powers: The increasing number of temp and inherent powers, all lumped into two columns just make sorting and searching stuff difficult - where's that Backup Radio, and what the hell did I do with my MiniHVas? Again the problem is too much clutter.
    3. Invention Recipes: The whole confusion between recipes I own, recipes I've memorised, legacy recipes I've used... (I've still got the Lost Curing Wand listed) it's clunky. It's not as bad as some of it but it can often take a while to sort through what I'm looking for.
    4. Incarnate Powers - I've got to make several clicks to get to my incarnate window. It would be really nice to be able to click a small button in my UI to call that. It's arguably too important to have to click to Powers and then Incarnates. I've never quite understood why the Incarnate window works like it does. The Enhancement management screen just works. Why can't the Incarnate Management window work like that? (Similarly the AH UI is pretty horrid and search is broke there too)
One of least bothersome features is the Salvage Management window - the tabs there do a pretty good job of sorting stuff into neat categories and make life much much easier (though I'm bugged that you can't sort tabs into custom order and I'm not sure why Astral and Empyrean merits are in Special rather than Incarnate stuff. That generally means an extra check for me.

It's great getting more features, but the problem is the UI lags behind the new shiny and has done for a long time. It's an important QoL issue for me and I suspect I'm not alone. We've got so many more power options than simply primary, secondary, pool and epic pool, with AH temps, Vet/PP rewards, crafted temps, mission temps etc. It could really do with some love IMO.
  10. I enjoy the tough stuff and have no problem with failure itself - but there's got to be a good balance between a success and failure.

Also, the game is entertainment - and it's not very entertaining to fail constantly so the balance is very important, and stuff that's tough to complete just doesn't get done much in this game.

There's a culture of winning in this game. Even if 30 firbolg escape, we don't lose the whole arc, we just fail the mission.

Personally I'd be happy to have more missions that fail but I'm certainly a minority here and it's no biggie as things stand.

    Welcome back to the game.
I remain a VIP so I cannot really comment on your issues - but if you're struggling to team, might be worth checking out your channels on Union (Defiant certainly has some very active channels for getting teams)

Red side is bare but not completely ghost-town - but your channels might be a good way to get teams.

Hope you have a better experience from posting this

    Lady Grey TF

Sunday 10pm GMT (that's right, 10pm... after the CoP - sorry it's late, but lots happens on Sundays)

Lady Grey TF - but this will be run at +4/x8 - it will be expected to be tough and a lot of fun and we'll be doing it the long way so expect lots of XP/Shardy goodness.

Open to all ATs. I'll be bringing either my Mind/Storm troller or my Huntsman - both competent at that level, so anything well slotted is welcome. You don't have to be 50 (the caveat being if it's just me and 7 level 45s that might not fly but the principle is if we get a balanced team, somebody's gonna get some cool XP)

Sign on here please - check the MotD on the Defiant Events EU channel.

See you there and be prepared to have fun
  13. never mind... bit of jiggling and I can lose Single Shot and it working nice.

Notes: Venom Grenade is slotted with Superior Dominion of Arachnos sans proc & Bayonette is slotted with Mako's Bite giving me a total of 54.88% Ranged Def and 41.16% Smashing/Lethal & Melee

I landed a Ragnarok on the TPN last night hence I've got 5 slotted.

We ran an ITF at +4/x8 with my guy effectively leading (there was a lvl 45 SO'd WP tank on the team but he couldn't cope with the Alphas. It went great.

I'm not **** kicking with damage, but it's by no means shabby. Certainly not up to the standard of my Ice/En blaster but higher than Scarlet.

The one other power I'd take if I could would have been Surveillance - but what to drop? I am a huge fan of the pets so they had to stay - to me this is what makes the Huntsman and SoA generally so much fun.

This is the first toon I can solo a Pylon with and I'm doing it with difficulty at max (not sure if that actually affects Pylons) but he's one of my toughest characters now.

Question: Combat Training: Defensive seems to only affect ranged damage, so currently the Enhancements there seem to really only be doing much for the bonuses, but it's almost 12% bonus in Mids. How much benefit would I get dropping that and getting the Surveillance power?
  15. Thanks. That's interesting and helps me firm up what I'm looking for.

I want the pet, it goes very well with the theme and makes the character - I've got the Arachnos Lore Pets and I usually have a Backup Radio for fun too... it gives me a small Arachnos army to stomp on stuff... with added HVAS.

I'm always a bit iffy about BU. I know it adds a lot for a short moment but I prefer consistency - I guess that's possibly a contentious stance to take but it tends to work for me.

Also Stealth... I'm trying to lose that because it's not how I see the Huntsman role. Sure, good for defence but in any conflict between build and theme, theme wins for me.

I've got 5 Ragnaroks for Heavy Burst now, and I've catalyzed my five Dominion of Arachnos but sadly they aren't in Mids yet
  16. Excellent that helps a lot. Thanks

Where the brackets [] represent places where the minimums and maximums are enforced.

Basically, there are two checks for minimum (5% chance to hit) and maximum (5% chance to miss). As such, the ToHit section of that floors at 5% and caps at 95%. Then once you apply the accuracy modifiers, there's another floor at 5% and cap at 95%.

So yes, you can easily reach the point where the only limit on you hitting an enemy is the 95% Final ToHit cap. Against an even-conning mob, with no defense and no ToHit debuffs, this can be done with a single Acc SO for most powers.

Excellent that helps but also prompts a further question then... if I like to challenge AVs and tougher mobs, do I need to aim for an area of to hit or should I just make it as high as can be?
  18. Thankyou.

  19. Ok I'm very happy to admit I don't really understand the difference between how to Hit and Acc work, it's something that's a bit confusing and I've not taken time to really get into the nuts and bolts of it.

However playing wtih Mids the other day I noticed that I'd got a massive To Hit percentage (over 110%) and about +35% Acc - and I noticed there's a mouseover popup explaining those two numbers are combined - that gives quite a big number (3850 or thereabouts)

That said, it's big in comparison to what? I don't know how it works so it's mostly meaningless to me. But, it could be relatively normal, a bit low or it could be over a cap for to hit bonuses.

If I understand things properly, there's always a 5% chance to not hit something (is that the same as missing it?) but your chance to hit something can be debuffed so even if you're guaranteed to hit something 317% of the time, you can be debuffed so as not to hit it more than the normal 1:20 chance to miss.

I imagine a high to hit would be good against CoT and dark-based powers - but how much attention should I reasonably pay to this? Is there a max chance to hit above which I am simply wasting time or can I increase it to such a level the only mitigation is the 1:20 chance to fail (am I right in thinking that 5% chance is pre-determined?)

Thanks for clearing up some confusion for me

Just to correct a technical point: The servers were not merged. They were relocated and the server lists were joined. Technically, there is now no distinction between EU and NA servers - the only distinction is two servers localised for French and German, and a little bit of history.
  21. Well I threw this up primarily to show a friend in a convenient way.

I take your point about the Huntsman - that's the theme for the character and I really didn't want much Bane stuff in it. I don't want him to be wielding a mace if I can help it. His role is primarily big guns and pets.

However I'm not sure how you can say that +190% damage is "painfully low." Sure I can increase it at the expense of some defence and if I tweak a great deal then my Def overall reduces, to no good end.

You're suggesting relying on Set bonuses is a bad thing - I've tried combos of slotting the Def powers for more defence but I'm not getting anywhere close to the level of defence I've got with the bonuses. Feel free to enlighten me
  22. I solo'd the ITF with this guy but it was painful. 64 h 30m 50 defeats. (ok that time did include pauses for doing other things and it took liberal applications of nukes/temps etc)

So I looked at his build and he was only about 35% S/L def and only +18% damage

So I've reworked him and on paper the results are pleasing. Frag Grenade is 5 slotted with SoA ATIOs.

I've already had comments about the high recovery - but I'm pretty happy with that - one cannot have too much End in my experience
