Quote:That name actually made me laugh. This is not really a game for the imagination-challenged.There is so much room for original characters without 'Son of Recluse 62' walking around.
It's like when I came across this character named "Killerrrrrr" with 6 'r's. I was wondering if the player kept adding r's until he got an unused name, instead of coming up with something a little more original. -
I've talked to the other real role-player and VIP account holder in our fledgling CoX group (@XanthosII). The two of us are the most active in CoX from The Conclave community. There are a few more, but they have only free accounts and aren't into RP that much. I have tried to get a few more CoX converts, but SW:TOR is proving quite stiff competition at the moment.
We will work on costumes (just got level 20 on Dr. Augmented and Pazurael), and RP backgrounds next weekend, and we'll have a CoX-athon weekend after that (Febr. 4/5). We decided that this would probably be a good moment to get into the RP side of things. We'll try to get in contact through the Union RP channel, I've already been lurking in there for a bit.* I will try to get XanthosII to join the channel as well.
*) It would have been fun to be at the opening of Foxie's Den, I was online at the time, but I only have Villains at the moment, even though some are Rogues at heart. -
I wouldn't even know how to get to a million inf., let alone many millions or billions.
Does the inf. income ramp up a lot as you level? My highest level right now is level 23 and has maybe 60k inf.
This offer sounds really generous, but Fulmens seems to have a different definition of what a new SG is than from my viewpoint.
Last time I checked, our new SG had about 500k rep, and that was with no character yet over level 20. I know we get the first ~300k or so for the first 15 members, but we got the other ~200k through playing. By the time our most of our characters are level 25, we should be well towards one million rep. but I don't see how we would have even close to one million inf. to spend by that time.
So I'm not sure what the gap between 400k and 1 million is supposed to be. I'm also wondering if I'm missing ways to get more inf. if people are talking about millions and billions of inf.
Any advice and explanation is welcome. -
Quote:Your explanation of how the characters an toons relate to each other on that page is already longer than what I've written in total on the Unionverse. And I'm not going to count the number of characters listed there. Very impressive.Thank you very much - what better than a compliment like that as motivation for updating the pages!
Also, I do have lots of other characters, including an Ice Blaster called Inuit. If you ever end up having nothing better to do (i.e. nothing else to do...) you can always finds a list of them under the User Lady Cobra wiki page. -
Quote:Thanks. You have some epic pages on the Unionverse wiki.First of all - like others have said - welcome to the game! I hope to be seeing you around.
Quote:To answer your question about multiple "toons" from my perspective, I would say that the original dual versions of Rei and Lady Cobra etc. were made due to game mechanics, i.e. to have a version that could move around in Paragon and another version for the Rogue Isles.
Since then I have made more versions and that was primarily either to try out new powersets or to have more costume slots for civilian outfits, ceremonial style costumes etc.
Personally, I don't really attach much, if any, RP importance to levels. Rei and Cobra are pretty much streetlevel "skilled normals" anyway, so the different versions are not intended to mean e.g. that they are supposed to be supremely skilled in all their Level 50 incarnations.
Quote:So, the only limitation I really feel bound by in the creation of alternate versions of these two characters is that their powers should be somehow explainable for a "skilled normal" I.e. you will probably not find an ice blaster Lady Cobra for instance.
Quote:As regards names in bios it can certainly be useful at least so people know that they are speaking to the same Rei even when the "toon" may be called e.g. Yakuza Girl.
Quote:I hope this answers your questions at least as regards my confusing number of alternate "toons" and apologise for the wall of text (your question prompted me to finally rediscover my log-in details that I have been unable to remember for a long time).
And as I said earlier, I like walls of text, it gives me something to read during my lunch break. -
Quote:I've read these backgrounds, now that the wiki is back up, and I have a question.Bear in mind a lot of these are probably out of date...
Claire is Lightning Kiss
Venessa is, uh, Venessa. Don't confuse her with Venom. It annoys her
Jake is Iron Anderson
Rei is Yakuza Girl, and is quite closely tied with Lady Cobra
I notice that quite a few characters can be multiple "toons" with different levels and powers. Is this a common thing, is there a RP reason behind it? for example Yakuza Girl /Rei.
Another question is if it's important to put the Real Name/Aliasses in the in-game description? Do people read that? I read it on almost any PC I encounter, if they have one. -
Quote:Thanks for the explanation. Sounds a bit The Matrix inspired. I think my Widow will be that wannabe rogue. I don't think she wants to be anyone's servant. We'll see how it unfolds, I'm focussing on some other characters right now.The 'Destined Ones' are easy enough to explain, if you don't mind-
SPOILERS!!
The Destined Ones are on the list because 'someone' has been seen by Recluse's Fortunata's as helping him achieve global domination and the victory of Arachnos. As you go through the main villain arc at the end, you are suspected to be 'The Destined One'. As it turns out, Recluse want's to use you to get his way and then dispose of you, so you cannot challenge him. You go forward to the time where he has won, is supposedly at the height of his power, and then kick his face in. Bringing his future-helmet back to the present day makes him a clear point 'Don't even try it.'
Recluse, suitably impressed, makes you a counter offer of helping him conquer the world and you being part of the army of strongest Villains who will then rule. He also mentions how your part as a pawn in Project: Destiny is over, and he will no longer try and manipulate you.
With the VEAT story line (such as it is, it's quite a bad example of writing in some places) you are, supposedly, basically sick of being a lackey and try and get your name on the list...thus making yourself a different kind of lackey, really >_<
I personally hate that story line, and my Webmaster Commander is a fully loyal soldier in command of a regiment (actual SG) rather than some wannabe rogue who isn't
And yes, the story as being told though the missions is very confusing. -
Quote:I have been reading that, some of my questions were related to it.Certainly a laudable goal, but, as I said, Im not sure how good an impression youll be able to get reading the wiki, as quite a lot of the information is incomplete or lacking. Id say reading through the backlog of Last Night In D posts would be better (and not just because of my excellent summations), theoretically starting around when the thread was reactivated, which would be here. It does go back an exceedingly long way though.
Quote:As for lore, there is this thread, and this thread, although both might be a tad out of date, and certainly doesn't include recent Praetorian and Well related developments. Although, to be honest, most people try to just ignore the well and pretend it doesn't exist.
Quote:If you need help base building, or want to see some bases, Id be happy to help, although you should be warned that it is a complex and byzantine system designed to weed out and crush the weak of will and spirit.
Quote:Also I remphasise the fact that you should totally talk to us on the channel, as a collective hive mind we are quite useful when it comes to answering questions, especially since quite a lot of the people who roleplay don't go on the forums that much. -
Quote:I found a few more gaping holes and might have fallen into some before I noticed. For example, I made an Arachnos Widow and the stories constantly reference Destined Ones, but nobody cares to explain what they are and the Paragon Wiki is no help either. All I know is that there is a list and you need to be on it.This is a problem, mostly because while we've been slapped in the gob with "No, the Well is the source of all powah! You will obey!" we've also had no indication of what our characters are supposedly Incarnates OF. Which...leaves a gaping hole in so-called canon there.
Quote:Personally, I work around that by simply ignoring the puddle of mild annoyance. I cannot stand the semi-sentient bull pancakes they are trying to feed us, mostly because it makes little damn sense. Ergo I ignore it. Sometimes you do have to handwave stuff. -
What would such a meeting entail? Given the mention of computers, we're supposed to play the game, not just meet the other players?
How long would this last?
I have been to other meetings of gaming communities and would maybe consider this one. I would use Easyjet or Ryanair to get there, unfortunately neither has flights to Birmingham from the Netherlands/NW Germany.
I'm not saying I will come, but I would like some more information. -

I'm new to the game, and I do very much try to embed my characters in the CoH lore. I do find that it's not very easy to figure out what the CoH lore is. I have been reading the Paragon Wiki and Unionverse quite extensively, but your comment about gods is completely new to me for example. I have been reading about Oranbega, Mu, Ermeeth, Hequat and such, but I haven't found any references to incarnates.
Anything related to the Well of Furies and gods like Zeus and Hera, just links straight to Wikipedia, so one would assume that the Greek Pantheon is part of CoH lore.
There are lot's of other things that clearly must exist in CoH lore, given that you can have costume pieces related to them, but are nearly completely absent from things like the Paragon Wiki. For example elves and fairies. It's not explained if they exist in the world, or are a figment of human imagination in some form. There is some mention of "The Lost Sands", but I can't find what that is or what it means.
Some of my characters have originally been created for pen-and-paper role playing, either Mutants and Masterminds or D&D, and others have influences from other fictional universes. I have been posting on these forums, trying to avoid the mistakes you mention, but my point is that figuring out CoH lore, at least for a newbie, isn't very straight forward.
A lot of issues can be solved because in CoH lore there exist parallel universes and portals to connect to them. (Praetorian Earth, Rikti Earth, Delta Zeta 24-10) With this there could easily be portals to other lore universes. It could explain a character from such a universe, but it would not explain the inhabitants of Primal Earth behaving like that universe. It could allow a character from such a universe to initially assume they would though.
So in general, I think for example a character from a Lords of the Rings Middle Earth could exist, but should not assume anyone in the CoH universe knowns about Sauron, elves, orcs or Numenor.
What is your view on this matter?
Would you have other sources for me, that explain more of the lore beyond what the Paragon Wiki offers? -
Quote:I'm not so much looking for specific information, but more to get an idea of how things work.I would, to some extent, caution against trying to find out large amounts of information ahead of time, as your characters obviously wouldn’t be there and, for the most part, wouldn’t know the people. I also find the wiki pages are quite often lacking, even when they have lots of detail they quite often fail to encapsulate what the events were actually like.
It's like with the different D&D settings, Forgotten Realms is very different from Ebberron in lore and feel even though both use the same mechanics. I need to have a bit of a feel for how the universe and the characters in it work.
Currently we're also still very busy learning the game itself, with base building, enhancements, inventions, etc. I don't want to get involved in too many things at once. I'm still struggling with basic stuff, like the chat settings, UI layout, etc.. We'll get there in a few weeks. -
Quote:Thanks for the links. I had only found Lady Cobra through google.Bear in mind a lot of these are probably out of date...
Claire is Lightning Kiss
Venessa is, uh, Venessa. Don't confuse her with Venom. It annoys her
Jake is Iron Anderson

I had a short chat with oreso in game yesterday.
I first want to have the character stories, backgrounds and descriptions to be finished. How to role-play if you don't know who the character is? I've been working some on my own characters, but my friends haven't had time to do much with theirs, and we need to make one coherent story. One of them will be visiting me on Friday, so maybe we'll hash something out then. Of course they had ideas when making the characters, to be fully fledged stories, it needs a bit more work.
Next to that, as I said, I'm not such a fan of just showing up at Pocket D, some kind of RP story leading to it, would be more suitable in my opinion. I need to talk about this with my friends as well.
But thanks a lot for the input, the friendly answers aren't wasted. I'm just not the kind of guy to jump of the deep end before some preparation. This is even true for CoX itself. Even though it's free, I first read quite a bit online before installing it and signing up.
Well. Today the wiki is offline anyway. I had hoped it would only be offline for the US, given that it's a US issue, but I suppose it's for a good cause. -
Quote:I'll talk to my friends to see how we'll approach this. We might want to wait until some of our characters are Tourists and have the initial meetings happen in Paragon City or something like that. We would then be invited to join in at Pocket D. Just showing up in Pocket D without any story seems to be the wrong way to go about this, when there could be a nice story as well.the pocket d crowd usually gather at about 8pm or 9pm British time, but you can always just shout for RP on the channel and someone will probably be free.
Quote:not even nearly everyone uses the wiki, but I have noticed your posts up there myself. jump in with RP whenever you wanna.
Quote:Liberty Force do fight big threats, but individual heroes in there are very much street level.
Nighthunters are functionally dead, alas, or they would be a great fit. There's bound to be some leftover heroes from that though. I have Artemidos as a monster hunter myself
Quote:And don't worry about levels, base raids, etc. There'll be a way to make stuff work (AE missions, PVP, narrated PVP, blah de blah).
Quote:Please do join the Union Roleplayers channel. And give me a shout in-game! @oreso
Cheers! -
Quote:In character is what it's all about, right? When I first started posting my PD summaries, they used to be somewhat more detailed. That proved to be a lot of work, so now I just try to give a flavour of what happened, and then only really the stuff that my characters interacted with. There is usually more going on than gets reported. In addition, as stated, there is a certain 'IC' bias. Lucy, for instance, is always going to come across as annoying in my posts, because that's how Claire sees her. In addition, most of the names used are the characters 'real' names, at least if they are people my characters have met and got to know.
Quote:What I try to give is give an idea of what went on, the atmosphere of that night, and hope that perhaps others will want to fill things in from their own characters point of view. And that people who weren't there might think they are missing out and come along. How successful the last part is, I have no idea. Perhaps if you and your friends turn up I'll be vindicated
Quote:As got your other questions, the forums are of course a good place to ask questions. It would be worth you joining the Union Roleplayers global chat as well, of course, but they aren't always very...focused...on what's actually going on. Everybody is friendly, though, and they are a good place for getting instant answers to Lore related stuff or opinions on concepts etc.
Quote:If your little group of villains was more established, I would have pointed them towards the Liberty Force. After all, their base has been broken into by every villain out there This might actually be somewhere that URP would be better finding somebody than the forums. People will have gotten to know you a little, and have a better idea if they would suit your style and vice versa.
Some kind of fledgling hero around level 20 could be an interesting enemy though. We'll write the background of the various characters, then people can see if there is a reason in their own characters to be enemies. Some kind of demon hunter could work for example, quite a few of the Conclave members are various forms of creatures from other planes of existence and one is likely a proper demon (details TBD).
Whatever the members of the Conclave will end up being, most of them will be "villains you can talk to", the Lex Luthor type or Magneto type, not so much Darkside or Green Goblin. I think quite a few will go Rogue.
Quote:Finally, after rambling on more than I intended, welcome to the Union RP community. I hope you will find the niche that keeps you with us for a long time. -
Quote:Oh, thanks. I have been able to do it on a character with a normal cape though. It had settings for inside and outside of the cape. Maybe it's just the trenchcoat and Widow costume that are still bugged.Capes, trenchcoats and other back items are bugged. Only way to change them is to use the "link all" in the color selecting and set them first and then unlink the colors to set the rest. This bug has been around for quite a while now (think it goes back to the introduction of trenchcoats).
Thanks for the work around, I will try that. I just discovered that a Widow only has the special costume in the first slot, so this way I can still have variants of the costume. Fortunately the SG colours work really nicely to accomplish that. -
Quote:So. I indeed had the wrong Lucy. I've read the page, care to update it sometime? Nice background story but it seems a bit hard to roleplay. Apparently you're doing fine nevertheless or the character has seen quite a bit of developement since then.re the Pocket d thread.
Lucy is one of mine, her "hero" name is Dire Lament. Her unionverse page is very out of date. The Pocket D posts are mostly from a character based view point and should not be taken as the whole truth, maybe 15% of the truth on a good day.
Could you divulge the names of some of the other characters from the Pocked D thread so I can look those up as well? Or anything else I should look into?
I've started putting some of my characters in there as well still very preliminary, but then I can ask others to give some advice when an initial version is written down. -

Hey Everyone,
I just made my first Arachnos Widow and tried applying the SG colours to the costume. I could change all the colours except for the ones on the inside of the "cape".
Is this a known bug, did I do something wrong?
It looks really bad, makes the feature of using SG colours in the costume basically unusable.
Thanks,
RW -
Hey Everyone,
I'm a new player, started just a month ago and now got my Arachnos Widow to level 10. I have already a costume slot unlocked though the Market and noticed that the Widow costume isn't available on that.
I've now gotten the level 10 costume slot mission, and it seems that this is also a "regular costume" slot.
Is there a way to have a second Arachnos Widow costume slot? (I'm not asking for mix-and-match, just the same choices as for the first slot).
I've searched the forums, but can't find a clear answer either.
Thanks,
RW -
Quote:Very well said.More to the point... Masterminds are lame as solo combatants. So what's really more empowering to females - a woman who has no choice but to let an army of men do all the fighting for her, or a character who relies a bunch of butt-kicking female thugs/soldiers/ninjas to do their violence?
-
Hey everyone,
I'm a new player, joined after Christmas. I was directed here to ask Union RP/Unionverse related questions.
I've started playing CoX with a few friends on Union, mainly Villains. We're pen-and-paper role-players and have played Mutants and Masterminds. So we do like creating proper characters and backgrounds and have found a venue for this in the Unionverse wiki.
I've been investigating Union RP to get a feel for how this works in an MMO. I've been reading the last few pages of the Pocked D thread on this forum for example. I've tried to find the names mentioned there in the Unionverse and that has led to a question.
I would like to know the distinction between a character and a NPC. I would assume characters to be those played by players, with NPCs being only background lore.
Now I run into a bit of a problem there, for example, one name that keeps being mentioned is Lucy, which I assume is Lucy Westerna, but in the wiki she's a NPC.
Can someone explain this to me? Maybe I've just got the wrong Lucy.
Secondly, is this the best forum to ask these questions? I know there is the in game global channel, but I prefer a forum for these kinds of things if possible, as it's easier to keep track of.
Thirdly, our Villains could maybe do with a fledgling Super Hero or Vigilante working against them. Would this be a place to to looking for one? (We're not going to make one ourselves, but it would make for much more interesting lore and role-playing.)
I have more questions, more about lore and proper backgrounds for characters, which I will ask if I get the general picture correct. Would this be a place to ask them?
