  9. Chapter 4 (part 1)

... a sharp, repeating pain forced out a breathy moan from her parched lips.

"OI! She a live one! Daaaviez! Hey Daviez! Brin' us dat dere bed. Com'on man. Sun'll be up soon an' she prolly won' survive it."

"Cooper stop poking her then and help me, you old coot." Davis draged a length of sailcloth behind him. "The Boss'll want to get a look at her once she comes to. Marcus went to tell 'im." He dropped the cloth and straightened it out to form a litter for the two of them to carry her. "She's a looker, ain't she Coop."

"I tink she's too red." Cooper walked slowly towards her feet while Davis went to her head. "Tink she'll live?"

Mori got to the Red Door Salon earlier than her appointment. Wearing a handpainted scarf over her hair, Sophia Lauren sunglasses - the really large and dark ones, and trenchcoat with the collar turned up, she headed past the line of expensive cars double parked to let out others who were hiding from paparazzi in similiar fashion and entered the Elizabeth Arden mecca of pampering. Telling the receptionist, "Amber Smith for Sybill." she went to find a magazine and chair along one wall. She flipped through the magazine, not really looking at it, to look busy. Her real intrest was the clientele; all sorts of patrons were being escorted everywhere. She started wondering who were the brides/grooms, the actors/actresses going for auditions/photoshoots, the regulars, the first-timers like herself. The magazine slowly closed onto her lap as she got lost in her wonderings.

  13. First things first - sorry there is no new chapter; there will be, but I need some help/input first ...

You see ... I'm having a bit of a writer's impass ... not a block. I have 2 really great ideas for the direction of this story - both of which can/will lead into GR. But I don't know which to do so I'm asking for your thoughts.

Vote A for back story on Mori's family/powers.

Vote B for forward moving story (& that's all I'm saying for now .)

Vote C for both (& yes, I have a mental outline for that option too ...)

Also, I am probably going to need some Cameo roles for the cruise. I'm not looking for mains (unless you REALLY want to & I'll be letting you know a little of what my mind has in store for them) but little played alts (even from other servers) to fill the roles I have in mind: medic & security. Any FF'ers I'd love to have help too as I only have one (& she's the main character .)

    Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have fun & be safe in game & RL!

  15. I miss the days when Jello Shooters was actually a Protector channel.

It is still a Protector channel. When anyone asks about teaming for a few missions/TF/SF or they need help with a specific mission (ex: no warning about 3+ bombs to click at the same time comes to mind) personally I assume they are on Protector, unless they say otherwise.

I'm a soloist - for the most part. So I may be on Champion, Virtue or any of the other servers because I have alts I created way back when we only had 8 slots per server and my creativity was unchecked. I use JS to keep in touch with what is going on on Protector & if I can help someone I'm more than happy to switch out. I think that the perception that we who use JS do not like other server LFT chatter is true - to a point.

Some of the (newer?) members may not know the history of how and why the channel was started and that can lead to ... dare I say - out-n-out flamewars in channel about : "This is for Protector Only" vs. "Why can't we even Mention another server (we are/ may need help on)" That is something that I am very sorry to say does need to be worked on. It is up to us, each individual member, to try and temper ourselves and our reaction to 'other server querries' that appear in JS.

That is just how I feel - and I have left JS a few times after some blow-up or other. But I came back to relying on JS after I cooled off. I'm one of the many 'silent majority' most times I'm on but I'll chime in if I feel up to it . Everyone needs a good *chocolate bombing attack* every once in a while.

I miss the days when the server actually had spirit, we had a mascot, we had things like Robot Rampage and RP Task Forces (Not my thing, but still thought it was cool), we were a server of doers

We are a server of doers as others have mentioned - much more eloquently than I. There will be new challenges waiting for our creativity once the new issue & GR arrives - you can count on it. If Badge doesn't come up with some hair-brained idea - there are many others with creativity to spare who'll step up. And I'm sure there are a lot of players who DO have great ideas and act upon them and we may never know about them. Ex: SG only events.

Do I wish that more events were around? Yes. But my time is limited and as River already stated: my desire to herd cats is almost non-existant. A fault that I will own up to. I do try to make it to posted events - and participate with whatever is needed - I also know myself & my nature ... if I do not want people around me - I won't be there but I wish sucess and fun to those who particiate. I also throughly enjoy seeing screen shots from ones I've missed .

I miss the days when this was a close-knit community

We, imho, still are. This is mid-issue. Lots of "a whole-lotta-nuthin' goin' on 'round here." That is my take on it. If it continues after I17/GR ... then I'll start to worry.

I look around today and is a little saddened. Jello shooters was silent for a good portion of the evening. I see people complaining and I see few stepping up and doing things to better the community. WTH happened to us?

I partially answered this above, but to reitterate: I talk when I feel I can add to the conversation, or to respond to querries if I know the answer (not often, but it can happen lol). Otherwise I'm one of the 'silent majority'. I keep up with the community via JS and the forums. With lots of "Bright 'n Shiny New Games" out there fighting for players time and being in-between issues, our community feels a lot like everyone is out-of-town for summer instead of being at home.

That is how I perceive things stand. I may be correct ... I may be totally off-base ... or somewhere in the middle. It's just how I see it. I hope that my opinions/perceptions can help.

  16. Chapter 3

Warmth again ... but different this time ... heavy, cloying warmth with little breeze to aleviate it ...

Sound of the surf seems farther away ... no more birds ... must be night ...

Ye gods ... I hurt all over ...

Nausia and pain again giving way to blackness ...

New York City never sleeps. That suited Mori. Her hotel was near to Central Park and she found the great winderness in the middle of a bustling high-rise ladened city an ocean of tranquility. Her plane trip was short, but the exhaustion she felt was from the long waits in the queues necessary to even get near the gate. She had arrived a day early for her appointment with Sybill, which she wished she could get out of, so she could explore. She looked skyward, envying the heroes she saw patrolling the skies over the Park. Finding an open bench, she sat down and watched them fly while her mind wandered back over the past few days.

'How did I get my powers? That was what Doc wanted me to try and remember. There might be something buried deep in my mind that can help them help me get rid of this sickness.' She watched as a group of parents, children in hand, walked to a large grassy hill and set up several blankets in a huge square. Then others showed up with baskets of food, drinks and toys. One of the adults gathered up a few of the children, who all had somehow carried amazing kites she never saw as they walked up, to take to the windward side of the hill. Dragons, boxes, butterflies and birds lofted in the breeze adding streams of colour to the air. The distant high-pitched laughter of children enjoying themselfes drifted to her, as did the smell of their banquet. Answering the call of her stomach, she left the park to find one of the many hole-in-the-wall resturants that make New York fameous.

"Mori make it ok?" Esme asked Pearl. They were sitting at the counters which seperated the kitchen from the main room of the base going over contact requests for help.

"Yes. She called when she got to the hotel to give the room number to us in case her phone isn't on." She made a face as Herb walked past carrying a big bucket of popcorn for everyone to munch on while watching the World Cup matches. "I forgot that I hate corn products when I am pregnant. Or should I say, they hate me." Sighing, she reached for her kerchief and doused it with a few drops of peppermint oil. Holding it under her nose while she walked towards the bathroom, she said, "I'll be right back and we can finish going over who helps with what."

Pearl craned her head around the corner of her apartment building to watch for the taxi taking Mori to the airport. "It'll be here soon, although the road is blocked due to combat right now. Looks like someone is having fun with the Freaks hehehe."

Mori laughed, "At least they are having fun. Look at the way that team is working. They are 'dancing with the enemy' very well." She sighed and glared at her left wrist. The supression field generator supplied to her by Doc was on and she couldn't help protect them. Her teeth grinding together as she watched the fight; her desire to protect flowing strongly within her. "I feel so helpless." She pounded the side of her fist onto the nearest wall in frustration. She looked at the doorman, another retired Hero who lived/worked here for her. "Keep an eye on them and protect them if necessary please."

"I always do 'Mam." He winked at them then turned to watch the combat again.

"Well, as long as we're stuck ... here," Pearl handed Mori a slim rectangular package wrapped in a floral print tissue paper. "You helped me when I first got here and I hope this can help you too. Also, here," she handed Mori a piece of paper. "There is information on the stylist for you to meet with in N.Y. and the hotel's info too. She works out of The Red Door Salon, where you have a day long appointment by the way, and she has already looked up photos of you so she's planned a new wardrobe for you."

"Bu-" Mori was silenced by Pearl placing her index finger over Mori's mouth. All Mori could do was gulp. 'This is a Mom move - yikes! So much for her normal gentle demeanor.'

"As I was saying before you interrupted me, you are going on a month long cruise and you don't really have an adequate wardrobe for the climate in the Bahamas and Eastern Carribean. She'll help you. AND - " here she glared at Mori who just opened her mouth again, "don't worry about the cost. Sybill owes me a few favors from my time there and Esme is covering the tab on everything else. Something about never getting you birthday presents or some-such excuse." She removed her finger and started to rummage through her purse.

"And I am to accept someone else paying for goods and services that I can pay for?" She sighed out of frustration. "Anything else Mom," she sarcastically growled. "Looks like the fight is wrapping up. I see a taxi at the far end of the block."

"AH HA! Here they are!" Pearl grabed Mori's purse and removed her cell phones, pagers, PDA and some other electronic devices. "You won't be needing these." She looked up into Mori's shocked face. "I'll keep them safe.- don't worry. In their place are these: a new multi-functional cell phone which both of your numbers reach by the way and Briar Rosethorn made you a new transporter device that covers a huge range. If you get in trouble hit the blue switch and 'POOF' you're back here safe and sound in the base. Don't worry - it doesn't interfere with the wristband, she tested it while Doc was designing that. Speaki- ..."

Pearl kept talking but Mori couldn't hear her anymore. She was watching the approaching taxi with dread. 'New York by plane. Taxis and hotel rooms. Eating out without friends. Going on a cruise - of all the nerve of Doc. He booked it without my knowledge or consent. Esme I bet paid for it too. Prescription my ****.' She glanced at Pearl who was talking away still about something or other and sighed quietly. "Taxi's here." Mori picked up her small carry-on suitcase. "Shall we get going?"

    (several days earlier)

"MORI!" Sunset Rider yelled as she wandered around in the Pax Texana base. "Where is the thing you said was here for me????"

Morigan Fay stuck her head out from her room into the hall. "I placed it in yours and Gumball's area Hun. He answered the door for a change." Wiping her hands, she walked over to Sunset who just entered the hallway. "Is it from your ranch and is it dangerous?"

"From the ranch? No. Dangerous? Knowing Gum - yes. Very." She sighed and shook her head. "Well - time to see if it means we have another talk with BATF or not. Thanks for taking delivery of it here."

"BATF? I thought he has a special permit as long as any experiments are done within the confines of the base." Mori crossed her arms at waist level and leaned her back against the wall.

'I think so. But it might depend on what he's experimenting with." She shoved her hands in the back pockets of her jeans. "I'll let you know." She chuckled ruefully, shaking her head. "Mom never told me there'd be days like this." Smiling to herself, she entered the potential blast area. Mori covered her with two glowing fields of energy.

"Just in case," she winked. Laughing, Sunset closed the door to protect everyone else. Mori went into the kitchen area to check on dinner preperations. There wern't many expected to dinner tonight, but she still had to make more than enough - just in case. Esme was busy chopping away at the potatoes. Pearl was browning the ground lamb. "How goes it?"

"Fin- OUCH!" Esme shoved a finger into her mouth. Pearl stiffled a laugh. Darting a glare at Pearl, Esme left the area and went for a bandage and knife-resistant gloves.

Mori supressed a giggle by coughing. "That happened more than once I take it." Pouring a cup of tea and grabing the recipe book left to her by her great-grandmother, she sat at the counter to find the Shepard's Pie entry.

"Yeah." Pearl kept snickering to herself. "Thanks for having us over tonight for dinner. Herb gets a kick out of being allowed in here. He's like a great big kid on these dinner nights, always pestering me about 'How long 'till dinner?' or 'Is this ok to wear?' You'd think he'd have grown out of that by now. But NoOoOOOo not him." She turned her attention back to the sizzling pan. "I put in all the seasonings you had out. We just need to add the veggies and the mashed potato top." She turned off the burner and placed a lid over the meat. "I'll go keep the men-folk company. Hollar if there is anything else you need help with." Giving Mori a quick hug, she left to join the others in the living room.

Esme reentered after Pearl left. She resumed potato duty, hands fully encased in shark-grade diving gloves. "I'm looking around for some projects that may need 'angels' to help them stay afloat. Want me to let you know if I find any?"

"Mmhmmmm." Mori swallowed the Typhoo, lemon and honey mix. "Yes. please. I have a lead on one that I'd love for you to look at while I'm on," she growled, "''vacation'." She glanced at the wristband that was lying on an adjacent counter. "I wish I was over this ... whatever it is. Even the Doc can't figure out why I still need to have those shots. So I get to take a forced break. On a cruise ship of all things."

"Enjoy it. You've deserved a break for the longest time. Everything will be fine. You'll have a blast. Maybe meet someone special? Who knows? If anything it is a change." She put down the knife and removed the gloves. There was no bandage or wound on her hand. "Perk of being able to heal ... but you know that. I left for the gloves. Got sick and tired of slicing my fingers and not the potatoes." She turned and walked towards the fridge. "Corn, peas and carrots next... any others I missed?"

"Nope - at least for this one. I'll help you with that." Mori got another cutting board and knife to tackle the carrots. "Tonight will be fun. Tomorrow ... we'll see."
