Quote:Could be either of those, Jibikao.I don't agree buffing all AoE to 100% critical chance. Fireball is an odd one. I don't think even Scrapper can critical 100% with it so why should Stalker?
I just want 3 Epic sets to follow the old Patron powers. 50% and critical from hidden. That's it.
I don't play Scrapper much but somebody told me Scrapper can critical with epic powers. At first I thought the bug is there because Scrapper can't critical with epic powers and that's why the dev "Missed" it but now Blaze Mastery can critical, it makes me think it's either a bug or a huge imbalance issue. I see no reason in giving Blaze full critical chance while others can't critical at all. -
Quote:Buffing everything else doesn't work and Posi explained why.Knowing them.... They might nerf fire to it's just as bad as the others instead of making the others better to be like fire mastery or w/e which effing sucks
Buff Everything Else
OK, I am going to spend a good amount of time explaining what this is and why it is bad for the health of your MMO. Like I said at the beginning, balancing MMOs is incredibly difficult because you have SO many things that need attention: What the class/archetype can do inherently. What the powers do. How tough the enemies are. What powers the enemy has. And even what combining any of those does to change it. Lets imagine a world where perfect balance CAN be achieved. In this world, A, B, C, D, and E are all existing in perfect harmony. And then along comes F. F is a little overpowered, by like 20% or so. This wasn’t evident during design because the situation that makes F 20% overpowered involves moving the character in a specific way that never came up during testing.
So what do we do now? In a world where we buff everything to meet F, we have to go in and make A+20%, B+20%,C+20%, D+20%, E+20%. Ok, I’ll stop there for a second. Right now we have done five times as much actual WORK in making things “balanced”, since we touched on 5 things instead of just 1. Ok, back to the examples.
Now everything in the game is as good as F, balance has been achieved. Or has it? The enemies in the game were all perfectly balanced against A, B, C, D, and E, but now they are getting killed 20% more efficiently, and people are levelling 20% faster. Rewards are being handed out 20% more often, and the economy is growing at a rate 20% faster than was anticipated.
Ok, so what’s the next solution? Increase the toughness of the enemies by 20%! Genius. But wait. That escort mission is now impossible if the enemies are 20% tougher. And there are a bunch of abilities that don’t do direct damage that now find themselves useless in a world where the enemies are 20% better. Suddenly F being 20% overpowered has “F’ed” you and the entire fabric of the game is falling apart, all because you didn’t want to nerf F, but raise everything else up to meet it.
Oh, and what if in the whole process you find out C wasn’t 20% better than it was before, but 40%? Do you nerf C, or go through the entire “bring everything up to C’s level” process all over again? Lets say you do. And you do this over and over again. Eventually you’re in a situation where the original values for things are nearly completely lost. You’ve got A+215%, B+225%, C+220%, D+220%, E+222%, and F+230%. The game now is not the one that was so perfectly in balance before, you’ve escalated values so far into the stratosphere that half the game doesn’t even work right anymore.
It’s kind of like a teeter-totter made of wood. If you put two 200 pound weights on it, one on either end, it’s going to be perfectly balanced. But if one end actually has 500 lbs. on it, you are far safer changing the 500 pounds to 200 pounds than you are adding another 300 pounds to the other end and watching the teeter-totter break in half.
Not everyone will agree with this, but this is the kind of thinking an MMO designer has to go through on a daily basis. We do try and find solutions that will please the most amount of people with the littlest impact on the rest of the game and other players. In a large majority of the cases “fixing” a balance problem is easiest done by fixing the problem in question and not raising everything else in the game up to meet it. -
Welcome back. Sorry to hear that you're having issues upon your return.
As for your problem, not that I'm aware of and I've been using Pocket D all night on several characters.
Try logging onto another character, and sending a /petition. Make sure to note the names of your other characters and where they are stuck. The GM can at least move them out of Pocket D.
It might also have been an issue with that servers Pocket D zone at that time.
Are you using the new NCsoft Launcher or the old Updater still? -
You have to have separate directory installs of Live, Test, and Beta.

Quote:Withstand the Praetorian Surge on Freedom - Friday, May 27
This is it. Emperor Marcus Cole will be leading the Praetorian assault on Primal Earth at 4pm Pacific (7pm Eastern/12am BST/1:00 CEST) today, Friday, May 27! And don't forget! If we manage to get more than 2500 heroes and villains to join in our effort today, a special account-wide badge will be given out if you log in to any live European or North American server during the weekend of May 27th through May 30th!
And as if this wasn't enough, we plan to give away Steampunk pack codes and costume codes in Pocket D at around 7pm Pacific (10pm Eastern/3am BST/4:00 CEST)... provided we manage to repel the assault! We'll see you later! -

I personally do not care for the AoE change to buffs, but Black Scorpion's will help with those that wont want it seeing as I can no longer control who gets the boost and who doesn't.
Kudos for Scorp for coming through on this, especially on the Mystic Fortune prompt.
Quote:And no, the AoE's will still not affect the caster.Hey all, I have some details about some of the powers changes for I20 Incarnates Ascend which were "below the fold" of the main announcement:
Along with Incarnates Ascend we are introducing a means for players to flag themselves as whether or not they want to be movement-affected by some of the click buffs which can be cast by others on them (like Speed Boost). The rest of the power will take effect, but the movement-affecting (run, jump, flight) part will be ignored if you so desire. This is going to affect Speed Boost, Increase Density, Inertial Reduction, Enforced Morale, and Accelerate Metabolism (based on my current list).
The same means will allow players to set a preference for Mystic Fortune to Always Ask, Always Accept or Always Deny.
The endurance cost for Mastermind upgrade powers is also being decreased to fit more in line with these changes.
Lastly, there is a subtlety to the Increase Density conversion to an AOE buff which the summary didn’t quite capture. The damage resistance component of the power is being made AOE-affecting, but the status effect protection component is going to still be single-target. The single target click powers which give status effect protection such as Clear Mind were not going to be made AOE wide (for balance purposes), but Increase Density having both facets makes it unique in this case. We are trying to split that difference with our approach.
As always, thank you for your feedback and concerns.
Your bud in the high-powered armor,
Black Scorpion -
Quote:You forgot bases...I'm just curious: What DO you want? The last big updates we've gotten pretty much every kind of content update (story arcs, tf's, trials, low-level content... The only thing lacking is PvP) I'm genuinely curious. (The two things that they've kind of put on a back-burner is of course customization for pool powers and power proliferation, but I'm fairly sure they're going to get working on that at some point)

Putting aside the possible reason that you just don't like being wrong, I'm not seeing any downside to this...especially not the ones you specifically mentioned in past posts in this thread.
There is no recharge penalty so if you 'miss' someone with your AoE buff, you can just recast it on them like you currently would.
There is no endurance penalty so it will be *CHEAPER* than it currently is to buff people.
You don't have to make calls for 'Gather for Shields' because it's no more expensive or time consuming than current.
The only reasons to be opposed to this is Speed Boost (which is only *ONE* power from a single set of a dozen) or because you just want to be a **** and not buff some teammates. Why the last one is even on this list? I dunno, scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to come up with reasons here.
Heck they give me headaches just playing her. Which is why I can take her only in small doses. There are physiological reason behind why many people ask to not be buffed by shields, SB and whatnot, including nausea, headaches, migraines, and even epileptic seizures.
When one of my friends played his Botz/FF MM, there are times I can't even look at the screen because he made the FF's white and I'm not even that sensitive to that kind of stuff. -
Quote:Pretty much how I've looked at the iTrials since they came out, granted I also started a new job that has really cut into my play time. But I was never in a "rush to keep up" either. While I agree the Incarnates seems a bit of a grind I have come up with an alternative to running the Trials over and over and over again.
Just don't.
WHenever something in the game becomes a grind for me I find somthing else to do. It is true that I only have 1 Tier 3 on one of my heroes but that is enough for me.
Currently I am learning how to lead TF teams and that is fun for me. And no grinding either.
Eventually I might get a Tier 4. Or maybe not but I am in no rush to get there. -

Also please, stop quoting said "gems." Report the troll and let my ignore function do its job. -

Quote:Most of this looks great, but I'm actually a bit unhappy with the AoE buffs change. I really have some situations where I DON'T want to be SB'd. I guess the team will have to spread out to avoid it, hard to do on a gray caves map or in Oranbega.

Quote:Thank you, PTH for coming back and responding. I'd really hope that you'd stick around and give the game another try and the CS people time to help you out.(I started this reply ages ago. So it might be a little out of date since when I started it there were only three replies and now after previewing it I see more have appeared including an answer about Wikipedia.)
Thank you for the replies and kind offers. Nice to have the offers of support and sympathy. To be upfront with people who are passionate about the game--you're paying good money for the privilege of posting on this forum so you must like it--I've been disenfranchised by this. I've cancelled my subscription and while I've got a couple of weeks to run I'm not sure I'll have enough fun grinding levels (yet again) without having yet found out what it's like at the top. If I reconsider my subscription maybe it will be a shame to have not accepted your offers to help me set up a new character but I don't think it would be fair of me to take advantage of you if I'm just going to leave soon after. I'd be no better than the imperfect information situation I am decrying.
Good news is that the support ticket was answered really, really quickly. Very impressed. Naught to be done though. They were sorry that I was unaware that there were four power sets from GR that were available during Registration Week and the same note that it's currently 50% off in the store. I thanked them for their speedy reply and I closed the ticket. It might be only 18 cans of coke (that is how much the expansion costs at 50% over here. Not really the best method of comparison but it might be more concrete than saying it's 2.5% of the median weekly income before income tax) but it's still 18 cans of coke I was never warned I would have to sacrifice for just one power set on one character.
If you read on you'll learn this is not the first time I will have had to restart building a main character. In CoX I've been stymied twice in a row at low levels and it hasn't been my fault. Those low levels aren't that much fun. (30 minutes running around in the area recommended looking for just 10 enemies to defeat? I learned to hate and avoid those missions. And is there more than one gate into Perez Park? Without a travelling power Perez Park is the pits.)
Thank you very much. It seems that you like the other posters are really knowledgeable and considerate people. (Thanks for the link to Paragon Wiki. Is Wikipedia really that bad? I know of one credible threat on Wikipedia that would be widespread due to volume of use and ease of implementation but I've not seen it implemented. Other than that, no prob detected on any of my malware systems despite extensive visits and edits.)
I wasn't 100% clear about my situation before so I'll attempt to correct that.
You are absolutely right that there is a warning in the time limited trial about the expiration and a need to upgrade. For some reason I couldn't upgrade my trial account and so I lost that main character when the trial expired and the account could not be reactivated with the code I bought from the online store after pressing the upgrade button on my account page.
The problem that prompted me to make this thread arose from special, invisible rules for Registration Week. I have no reason to believe I'm special and every reason to believe they would apply to anyone and everyone with a full CoX code but no GR code. It's the invisible part that made this a kick in the pants. When I made my second full account character--I'll explain a problem with my first below--never once did anything like this appear:
"The Kinetic Melee power set you are adding to your City of Heroes Tanker is normally part of the Going Rogue expansion and is available for free use only during Registration Week. If you wish to continue using this character after Registration Week ends on May 19 either select a different power set or add a valid code for Going Rogue to your account."
If not for me being allowed to choose Kinetic Melee there'd be no problem. Even a warning would have been fine. If there are costume options in GR which aren't in CoX I expect that access could be lost just for wearing the wrong thing.
To expand upon the point you made about it being good to be reminded about things us new guys go through this is what happened with my first character whose loss is unimportant:
New accounts were absolutely forced to make their first character a Praetorian, no choice whatsoever. Any Praetorian, as I understand it, is GR content. It also allowed me to make a Praetorian a couple of days later with NCsoft's full knowledge that I would not be able to use it after a few days.
I emphasis that this was with the full base game CoX code but not a GR code. If it was a trial by all means give me access to everything and then let me cry like a baby when I buy CoX and can't use all the same stuff. But this was a full CoX code direct from NCsoft store that not only let me but forced and compelled me to use content that NCsoft knew would become inaccessible to me in only a few days.
To expect me to know as a new player that it was part of an optional expansion to which I had only one week of access is entirely unreasonable. The GR nature of the Praetorians was in no way explained and the GR only powers were in no way distinguished or identified as expansion content.
To include the GR only powers in my CoH character creation screen is either really bad planning or really good planning. Force all new players who have bought the basic pack to unwittingly create characters they can only play with the expansion and allow existing CoX players to do the same and don't tell anyone this until the special period expires. Maybe that will get a few bucks out of some like Lucky666's friend but it's driven me to leave despite you nice folk.
As far as I'm aware, if you purchase City of Heroes, City of Villains, Good vs Evil, or the Architect Edition, then there should be either a trial period, nor should you be forced to create a Praetorian as none of those gives you access to Praetoria. Since you said you purchased this from the NCsoft store, I take that to mean that this was a digital download. Had it been a box, from what else you've explained I would have guess that what happened was you had inputted the Invite a Friend code rather than the actual full account game code.
Anything online will have glitches, if you purchased City of Heroes (not the GR version) from the NCsoft site and you were forced to make a Praetorian, that's a bug.
And thank you for the compliment. You'll find that the CoX community is pretty unique when it comes to MMOs. Yes, we still have posterior head adornments here, but they tend to be the exception not the rule.
All I can say is give us in the community and the folks in CS a little time to help you solve this.
EDIT: You know, reading over the post again... I'm wondering if perhaps you downloaded the EU trial (or NA) and when you went to purchase it was the opposite...? If you try to apply an NA code to an EU account, all it will do is prompt you to make another account, so it will seem like you've lost your first (trial) account. It's the only other thing I can think of, really. -
Quote:But they are still out there, as are Good vs Evil and the Architect Edition, the AE version not being that old and it wont grant you access to Praetoria either. I would have expected at least a popup on a trial account describing Trial Account Restrictions upon entering the game. I thought that there had been one after they increased the restrictions a couple of years back.I'll play up the counter point on this. What the company does with the trial makes sense. You can not find just plain ordinary CoH or CoV in any regular game store any more. They can be found in second hand game stores or places that handle discontinued merchandise but not new on the shelves.
It's kind of like watching the blu ray collectors edition of a movie and then complaining that the vhs tape you bought from the dollar store doesn't have the same quality and special features. -
Quote:I should have been more clear, I actually meant the CoH wikia you mentioned, not Wikipedia as a whole. You're half-right. ParagonWiki (at either paragonwiki.com or wiki.cohtitan.com) is the safe City of Heroes wiki. But there's nothing wrong with Wikipedia, which is a general purpose wiki. You're thinking of the CoH wiki hosted at wikia.com, which is known to be a haven for malware.
I suspect the OP may in fact have been referring to the City of Heroes page on Wikipedia, specifically this section.
I've run through the tutorial myself, but the results will have to wait until lunch for I must be getting to work. -
First off, Greetings and welcome to CoX, PTH.
It sounds like you were having fun while playing your new hero, and of that I'm glad to hear. I am sorry that you had a hard time of it with the Trial and confusion when upgrading to the subscription. It's been a few years since I started with the trial and it was far more lax then. (You can thank the RMT'rs for the far more limited and restricted trial we have today.)
I could swear that a popup when you first logged in on a Trial account warned you of the time limitation as well as other limitations you are subjected to, but I'm not sure if it explicitly warns you about the different versions of the game that are still out there and what they will allow you to access. Basically any City of Heroes or City of Villains box/code will grant you access to both, while CoH: Going Rogue grants you access to Praetoria and Primal Earth.
I assume that you started either a Dual Pistol or Demon Summoner in Praetoria. From what you described I'm not sure if you purchased a standard CoH code and started a new account or if you applied it to the trial account as an upgrade.
If you started a new account then you would will not have access to the previously created character as it will be on the trial account. Since you've already started a Customer Service ticket, I'd recommend that you at least ask if they can apply the code to the the trial account as an upgrade. No telling if they can or not, but if you don't at least ask then the answer is no.
As for you not seeing or not noticing any clear indication that you would need to purchase Going Rogue to maintain access to your Praetorian character, that is all very good information to hear from a newly starting player's perspective. Thanks for listing your comments in a very clear way. Those of us that have been playing for a while tend to forget what it's like starting out.
May I ask what your global name is ingame? You can PM it to me if you like. I'd be more than happy to roll a new character or join you on one of my own to help you out, or front you some starting funds on a new character if you like.
As for the Wikipedia, don't ever go there and I suggest running scans on your computer as it's a host of malware. Paragon Wiki is the place you want to go for all your CoX info.
While you're here, I'd also recommend heading down to the Player Help section and introduce yourself in the Mentor Project thread stickied at the top, or you can just click on the link in my signature.
Once again, welcome to the game and the forums. I hope this gets resolved quickly for you and you can continue to experience the game that I truly love. -
Quote:So 67,000 accounts? Of course, you'd have to adjust for pay services and boosters, but that sounds about right. Apparently we see servers in the yellow and red due to the downscaling of hardware (with another round of downscaling having just been tested).Quote:Yes thats right hardware downscaling thats why they want us to try and get more then 3500 people on at once to test load on Freedom on the 27th.
Quote:If I wanted to see if my current population could be supported by less hardware, a stress-test is exactly what I'd do.Quote:It can't. You can't remove hardware and expect a capacity increase.
This isn't Star Trek physics where you take out half your memory but just maybe if you reverse the polarity of your hard drives you just might get extra capacity.
They upgraded. That's why Freedom isn't in the red as much as it used to. Now they want to see just what the new limits are so they know where to set the limits for the server queue. -
During the U-stream this morning, Doc Aeon said that they are working on getting this issue resolved and that is wasn't as easy as people assumed. From what he said is sounded as though it was more difficult that what they had expected. But at least they know about it and are working on it.
As for rolling MA back, you can't do that without rolling back the entire game. I personally don't think that not changing a word in my arc at least temporarily outweighs the entire player base and their potential loss of gleemail/inf/xp/rewards/etc. -
Take my money now.
And my favourite part of the video with the pipe wrench aiming for the back of the head. -
