Quote:Double XP plus reactivation plus a preview for dual pistols? What is a Double Experience Weekend? It's a three day stretch of time during which all participating Hero and Villain characters receive double the XP, Influence, and Infamy for their accomplishments in game. All you have to do is log in and take advantage of this opportunity to level up your favorite characters twice as quickly as normal! And if you pre-purchase Going Rogue, you'll be able to take advantage of all that Double XP has to offer while wielding the Dual Pistols power set!
So. Damn. Sneaky.
Please tell the appropriate I'm HIGHLY impressed with them right now -
Quote:Let me rephrase, then...Thats kinda my point is it not?
At least getting to 50 gives you practice on power choice selection and slotting.
level =/= skill
veteran's status (ie, length of time playing) =/= skill
A good player, especially one that decides to educate themselves (through guides, Paragonwiki, just listening*, etc) and is playing with people willing to help/teach them (last I checked we still had one of the best communities for a game ^_^), should be able get a hold of *EATs (and the game) pretty quickly.
*This is assuming they're not getting bad advice from people or are playing with those "there's only one right way to play/slot/etc" mentality folks. -
Quote:Yep. The divorce between appearance and ability is one of my favorite things about COH. Being able to have most all all the options (capes, wings, auras, etc) in CO at creation is one of my favorite things about that game. Since the ball is back in Paragon Studio's court, I'd like to see them go even further than that! For example, I can understand keeping somethings gated (whether I like it or not is a different matter), but being able to unlock things per account or getting a redeemable "token" for another character would be great (unlock a Tommy Gun or Tech Wings with one character, use that "token" for a new character at creation). Stuff like that. And yet look at the MMOs where people look different as they level - sure, at L50 you look much more impressive than you did at L1, but you also look like most of the other people who are L50. Personally I'd rather stick to CoH's system where you never see anyone who looks like you, and there's no elitism based on appearance/equipment. It's ironic you started your post with the word WOW - that MMO just about sums up my point.

Quote:Agree. Getting a level 50 VEAT is basically, "Okay, you're pretty much done with that character. Go roll a shiney new alt!"Something else I thought about the EATs unlock level dropping to 20 - right now, they're just about the only exclusive level 50 bonus/content in the game - but GR is bringing in an entire new endgame system, so the need to have EATs as the "perk" for hitting 50 will be replaced by something larger and more complex.
Alting = old "end game"
Is GR confirmed to have the new end-game option? I know its something being worked on, but wasn't sure if we'd see it in GR, i18, or some later update...
I've seen more than a few stupid, awful Khelds and SoA's. Getting an *EAT has no bearing on player skill and everything to do with XP earned. Its not like the game gives you a quiz and only gives you an *EAT if you get a B or higher. There's no way to guarantee someone will have the skills required to build/play an *EAT at 50. -
Oh, and one thing for marketing: Please, please, PLEASE do not go crazy with store-specific/exclusive pre-order goodies like various companies are doing these days. Its rather annoying. I'm sure Gamestop will ask for something, and once they get something then everyone else (from Wal-Mart to Del Taco) will want in on it too.
If for some reason you simply must, then please keep them as timed exclusives and sell them ("the pre-order pack"), make them free in-game rewards, something, a sensible time later (maybe a year?). -
Didn't one of the rednames call that "need" for farming "aberrant behavior" or something like that?
-
A month at worst? I think our playing styles/idea of what "super casual" means are far different. It took me over two years to get my first 50, and that's before level smoothing and all that. My two other 50's also took about two years each, and that's with level smoothing. I've got a level 41 blaster that might hit 50 within a few months. Maybe.
Cape at creation would be a good idea, IMO. Actual travel powers at 6 would be also (versus getting the VR). CO does it. DCUO probably will too. Things can, and should, move on if it provides an improvement for the bulk of the playerbase. I know some folks who preferred Defiance 1.0 to 2.0 - oh well.
I don't think it will have zero effect on powerleveling. It won't make a huge dent on it, but folks who just want the EATs won't have a need to PL if they don't have 50's on the respective sides. It depends on *why* a player powerlevels. Let the powerlevelers who powerlevel because they can, they want to, do so. They'll do it even if there's nothing at 50.
I find the whole "cheapening" argument to be meh. We still get a chance for Purples, will be getting a new system devoted to them (whatever it is that Positron comes up with), can do all the content in the game through Ouroboros, etc. This will be something that can be enjoyed by the far more of the playerbase, and I feel that's a good thing overall. I've got my 50's. I don't feel that accomplishment is cheapened one bit, but then I don't seem to put the same value into the accomplishment as you do.
If the devs took all my VR costume bits and made them available to everybody from creation? More power to them - I think that would be to the game's benefit, especially since the competition (now and incoming) will likely have things like Trenchcoats, Wings, etc., available from the get-go. How do I feel that my pre-order COV:CE Arachnos helmets are now Veteran Rewards? I'm 110% okay with that. I think it'll benefit the game and the players in the long run. I'm hoping it'll make the game more appealing to new players. After all, level 20 is a short hop from level 14 - the trial level cap. One more thing to tempt folks with. Its more early level content as well to help alleviate some of the repetition of the early levels (which, lets be honest, gets old quick).
I've just got a different view on this. If its for the benefit of the playerbase and the game? I think its a good move. -
I'm quite happy with all this, including the *EAT change.
* I've got a few friends, who due to chronic alt-itis, have never gotten *EATs, even after several years of play. And they're better than a lot of the *EATs I've run with in the past in PUGs.
* Hitting 50 is no indicator of player skill. Just that you received XYZ many XP. You could've been door sitting the whole time, paid someone influence to powerlevel you, etc. Hell, if the account is shared then they could be piggy-backing off of someone else.
* It takes away one more reason to make cap in the first place - its no longer a necessity to earn an *EAT! One less reason to rush, one less reason to OMGPL, etc. Maybe common sense for most of us, but not for new folks, certainly.
* Makes the game content more accessible.
* Admits that alting is such a MAJOR part of the game that its not even funny.
I am very happy with all of this.
edit: And if anything, its a slap in the face to RMT/powerlevelers. Your "services" just became *that* much more irrelevant, you got one less thing to sell. GO AWAY. -
Just got done with one. Mercedes Lackey? Ma'am? You are a silly goose. Thank you SO much
Happy coincidence: my character recently got a beard and a new haircut, looks a bit William Frakes-ish, so the "Troy" dialog was perfect -
Quote:I thought (and thusly expect), from what I've read and seen, for Going Rogue to be an actual expansion, will not have as much content as COV, but won't be priced like COV was either. I"m expecting a whole new starting experience in Praetoria, and that there will be the ability to gradually change sides so I'm expecting GR content for the whole spectrum of levels (although not necessarily in Praetoria). I'm expecting two new powersets, no new ATs, etc. It's not doom and gloom - it's expectation management
If everyone starts thinking GR is going to be like CoV, then there would be doom and gloom when it launches
Am I off base with that, or does that seem about right? Expectation management is a HUGE thing, and its too easy to get over hyped (or over DOOOOOOOMed). -

Her own?
Its actually not a half-bad idea, to be honest.
* The crazed, power-hungry Tyrant would find it practical on a variety of levels. Refuse the enemy a weapon, enforce discipline, turn anyone into a WMD, etc.
* Those zealous enough to join and survive might well welcome a chance to be 110% committed to the cause. Death to all that oppose Tyrant! Rawr! Kamekazi! We're two-dimensional charecatures you get to fight in arcs from levels 15-20! All hail Ming the Merciless! er...
Or...
* The reluctant leader Cole might not want to do it, but it makes sense given what almost happened. If the Devouring Earth were that difficult to defeat before, the last thing you want is for them to possess the powers of the elite 10% of superhumans who can survive the training program. Also, could you imagine the tragedy of someone being turned into exactly what they were fighting to protect their friends, their families and humanity as a whole from?
* The people fighting the Devouring Earth might have seen examples of this, and as such might actually want/request such a thing! No, seriously! "Kill me before I turn into one of those inhuman monsters."
or its a mixture of both... -
No worries. Just tells me you're wanting to be sure I don't make a bad choice!
Tis appreciated! -
Well, again, this is assuming he started off "teh 110% ebil tyrant" he is now. I'm still curious to see if the old Praetorian arcs get retconned or not to the characters aren't nearly so shallow.
-
Well, I was referring to parts in general, not necessarily the PSU. But thanks for the recommendation
-
Quote:Planning on an Antec BP550 Plus modular PSU. I might go up if there's a need, but it should be more than enough for the 5850 I want to put in (requries a 500w) plus everything else. I'm open to suggestions, naturally, but the case reviews I've read suggested a modular PSU for that particular case due to space/airflow.Not a bad little case. What did you get for a PSU?
And the only thing close to the 3.0GHz Athlon II X3 for Socket 1156 is the non-Turbo mode, non-hyperthread, slightly smaller L3 cache, Pentium G6950 and that's not including what is likely to be a more expensive motherboard. That leave the Socket 775 and that platform is on the way out.
I love how much power you can get for so little these days. Its moderately absurd! These aren't even bottom of the barrel parts - everything is pretty good quality! -
Quote:Makes me wonder if the Menders would be considered horrible menaces, then.Talking of time travel, the devs said at Hero Con that you'd be able to flashback to any Praetorian content you missed - which means that there's either one or more pillars of ice and flame in Paretoria, or that the Menders will be able to issue Ouroboros portals to the superpowered people of Praetorian Earth too.
I'm sure Mender Silos would have a reason for doing this
Cole doesn't have control of *everything* after all. And I double a Mender will volunteer -
Well, I've spec'd out a nice, small, MicroATX machine at Newegg for $583.92. It has everything except a video card as I intend to use my Radeon 4670 1g for the time being. Long story short its a Athlon II X3 440 @ 3ghz, 4g RAM using an AM3 motherboard with plans in one to two years time to move up to whatever seems attractive. I like AMD's roadmap still has the AM3 boards being used then
I considered going with an i3 or i5, but this fits my budget nicely, I think it'll perform quite well for the price (the i5 doesn't do so well that I'm willing to pay more than double for the CPU), and all my other computing needs will be very well met
I realize the Radeon likely won't do Ultra mode, but, but I can save up and upgrade later on with a nice 5850 or something comparable at the time.
Thank you!
edit: I realized that I want a smaller machine (out of sight, out of mind), hence going MicroATX. Once I get it built, I have little to no intentions of going back in unless needed. This will fit up to a 12" card...

Also realized that I have no real desire to do SLI or Crossfire, which was rather liberating. No need to account for it! -
Maybe folks with potentially dangerous powers (to Tyrant) are also weeded out. Not necessarily zap-zap type stuff, but time travel and what have you...
Also, it probably keeps the supers population more manageable. Less variables, less loose cannons, etc. And, who knows, maybe it is that legitimately brutal because once you step outside Praetoria and such it really is that horrifically bad. I mean, we all know that nuclear radiation causes all sorts of fun mutations and such :P
Why look for one singular reason when there could be multiple reasons for it? One solution for many problems (and "problems"). -
We'll see how things turn out in the beta/release of the game. I think its safe to say there's a wide range of expectations/hopes of how the story will be, how explicitly black or white things will be, etc. I've already gone over my hopes, reasons and disagreements with other views in another thread, so no point in repeating them here.
Question about Tyrant and Dominatrix (assuming they have had sex) - aren't those kinds of hijinks common not only with inbred rednecks Jeff Foxworthy jokes about but also royalty of old? Random thought/wondering, not especialy meant to go anywhere (so run with it if you like). -
You know, the irony of this is that while I'm holding this position, there've been many, MANY times where I wondered why good guys can't just be good guys fighting an equally bad bad guy. I guess its more of a mood thing? Dunno. Ah well.
-
Quote:Which would've been worse? Doing that or letting the world go on as it was? That's not quite on the same scale as creating a world-wide dictatorship that's so repressive that even your thoughts are monitored
Quote:With the Devouring Earth threat ended, the world began to return to its normal state of affairs. The mass exodus around the world, combined with drifting clouds of radioactive fallout, left much of the world uninhabited and ripe for conquering. Nations fought among themselves as they began carving the world up into territories, ignoring previous borders and alliances.
Once again, Cole spoke to the world, but this time he spoke not to its leaders, but to its people. He told humankind that it had come too far, survived too much, grown too close to simply let its leaders throw it all away. Cole had a plan to return the Earth to the way it once was-in fact, to better than how it had been. He had tamed the beast now known as Hamidon, and Hamidon was a creature tied to the Earth itself. Hamidon could be used to heal the Earth of all its ills. The charred ruins, the polluted waters, and even the radiation zones could be cleansed. To do so, though, Cole needed all the people of Earth to trust in him to lead the way to a new brighter future.
As of this moment, without me having played through all of the related content in GR (for obvious reasons) or threatening a random developer's cat, I'm less willing to say he's evil like I would Recluse, and more like an overprotective (and paranoid) parent. A lot hinges on:
Quote:Emperor Cole is a savior, but his story has more to it than what is written in history books. Most citizens of Praetorian Earth respect him or love him. Some who know the truth fear him, and fewer still dare to stand against his lies. No matter what he is called officially and publicly, no one can stop the hushed whispers in the streets and back alleys of his empire. There he is called by another name: Tyrant.
I guess I simply don't want to write him off as being bad-guy-pretending-to-be-good. Too simple, uninteresting. I have more faith in the folks writing everything than to do that. I'm really hoping that, as you play through things, you will see "Oh, wow, he's really done good here," then catch yourself saying it, feeling a bit weird in the process. To see good, and bad, in his actions, and to lament how far things have been pushed, but at the same time wonder how much you would give up to have the same level of peace and provision the Praetorians have?
There's a lot of potential here to make one wonder, I think. Which is usually a great use of fiction. But if its just "No matter what, Cole is evil," then all the plot, the character development, the quandries and questions are pretty much wasted time for the dev team. -
Quote:See, I find this to be boring. Good intentions gone awry? Sure, no problem. But evil? Malevolent? Meh, boring. We've got Recluse already.Tyrant will be shown to be evil by the end of the GR content
Over protective? Possibly tortured over what he's doing but sees it as the only way to keep the world safe? Lamenting what he's done in the past and may have to do in the future? More interesting.
I would rather, at the end of GR's content, have some sympathy for the man. I would rather see him as pitiable in one regard, but far too dangerous to actually pity. They're supposed to be deepening the Praetorians, after all, not continuing with the cheap card-board cut outs that they are right now.
And, to echo EmperorSteele, I'm thinking ret-conning is going to be highly necessary.
Besides - its not like there's any shortage of reasons to take control of our Earth. Portal Corp, if nothing else, makes it the gateway to hundreds of other worlds! Whoever controls the ability to access them gains a tremendous asset for good, bad and ugly. Certainly can't have the Rikti controlling it, or the Circle, or any number of other groups. Likewise, our Nemesis is certainly nothing to be trifled with... -
I think there's some built-in sympathies towards the resistance, giving them a "free pass" of sorts, which is why I'm asking these things.
