    AV soloing?

Yup, I agree. Fire/SR is great for this and pretty cheap too.
  2. Well this is great fun!

I have a few questions for the experts.

In game my Probots are giving me 7.5% defense. This is enhanceble correct? If I slot two level 50 defense IOs that will increase it by 49.7% at level 50. Making the overall defense buff 11.22% from one bubble correct?

Tar Patch. -90% run speed by default. If I add a slow enhancement and brin that to over -100% run speed does that mean that critters caught in it are effectively immobilized? Would I be better served adding two recharge IOs and getting Tar Patch double stacked for 10 seconds for the -res or adding one recharge and one slow enhancement? Even with one recharge Tar Patch is still permanent. I just can't stack it

    Thanks for the help?

    Power,
I'm looking at your build and I'm curious,
how do you know to build that way?
Do you have ideas before you start with Mids?
Do you basically know how you are going to achieve lets say soft capped defenses vis a vis what powers you are going to take so you can slot x sets to get what you want ?
Or is it more a case of tinkering with Mids until you have what you want and then tinkering until you have made sure there is no better way to get there?

I'm a total noob at set slotting so please don't read anything snarky into what I ask. I really am just asking so I'll understand better. I don't have any agenda and am not subtly mocking anyone.
Boxing 5 slotted rather than shadow punch?
    Howcome?
Is it that its more efficient to your ultimate goal because you need tough and the damage is close enough to SPs that theres not much in it and you need the powerchoice for something different?
Im basically trying to understand when it comes to building an amazing IO'd character what are the compromises you make that tend to yield a stronger character?
Or maybe you already know you are going to have enough recharge that boxing is just a slot mule and you wont be using it, you will be using SM, MG Smite and siphon. was it that? and how did you know that you wouldn't need boxing but would need it to slot it that way?
For instance I have an MA/Shield and took and slotted boxing for concept reasons but was thinking hard about taking thunderkick instead since it does more damage and can take the same sets, I would be willing to bet that you didn't choose boxing for concept reasons (drat that sounded snarky I dont mean it to) I think you chose it as a means to an end.
Hmmm you slotted amaze which is stun, what was that for? (Damnit that sounds snarky too! Don't read anything into that, I just don't know and want to understand better)
And Hammi Os, what is it that makes you decide to go for those as opposed to IOs from a set or 2 IOs from 2 different sets?

Anyway thanks for any insights you can share. It's much appreciated.

    Hi TerraScorcher!

I'm sorry I didn't see this until tonight. It looks like Werner and the other scrappers have taken care of all the questions you had though.

As an aside Werner is one of my most favorite people here on the boards. I swear ta gawd that guy just gives and gives to the community. OK, man crush out of the way sooo.

How do I know how to build that way?

I don't it's such an ongoing process. Saint's build has changed several times since I killed my first AV. I can tell you that builds are personal things What's good for me may not be good for others. I've found my DM/SD a great challenge to build in such a way as to include everything I want. Builds are about compromises.

I want to address the choice of slotting Boxing directly though.

You're correct that boxing was chosen as a means to an end. In damn near every build I make I want to softcap as much defense as I can and that almost always means Weave. Tough is also usually a strong choice so that means Boxing. Boxing is an attack I don't even need. The best attack chain for DM is Smite>MG>Smite>SL. I have enough recharge to pull that off with no gaps while Hasten is running (it's not perma though so I'll have to suffer while it's down, one of those compromises ). So what to do with boxing? Well in my initial build I did nothing with it. I had the slots placed in Deflection and Battle Agility. The goal was to get that 5% recharge with Red Fortunes. Then one day I'm looking at that and thinking "What else am I getting there besides 10% total recharge? Some mez resistance? Who cares. Some crappy resists and a 2% damage buff? Hmmm there's got to be a better way.

So I muled Boxing and kept my 10% recharge. Then I could change my slots in BA and Def to LotG.

The overall benefit was that I picked up 20% Regen, 30 HP, 24% more Acc, and a 4% Recovery boost.

There may be a way to make even better use of those slots but I feel I lost absolutely nothing useful by muling (is that a word?) Boxing and picked up a few nice bonuses. Most notably the HP and Acc.

Often when I start a build I have goals in mind. Shooting for a certain attack chain, regenning (is THAT a word?) 20+ hp/sec, having my attacks at 195% Acc. But these are all just guidlines. Rarely do I get everything I want.

Knowing what compromises to make really comes with experience with the powersets.

    Good Luck!

P.S. I <3 Sarrate too....andPrey...and Umbral..the list goes on and on really! Great community. They even helped me build a Brute of all things!

My suggestion to pull would be firing off twilight grasp. It's a nice debuff and gets their attention. No, you don't need provoke.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hey! That was my thinking exactly. Currently that's how I am doing it at level 22. Although I did take one of the personal attacks I'm about ready to respec out of it II think.

    Any other thoughts?
  6. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I'm having the best time with this guy. I rolled him up to give me a diversion while my Brute gathered patrol XP and I can't even make myself go back to the Brute now!

I think I am ready to post my Noobish build for you guys to disassemble. I'm getting a bit of an idea on how to prepare for 50 but it's still a long way off.

Anyway, the proposed build has fluffy up all the time. should be VERY closed to softcapped at range and AoE. Add in the 7.5% from the Protector Bot's bubble (at least I hope that's what it is. The combat attributes monitor said 7.5% when I checked it on the bot itself. Is it the same for the MM? Do we get the full benefit of the bubble or is it reduced?) and 3% for the Gladiator unique that will go into Dark Embrace.

Let me know what could be improved or changed alltogether. I do primarily solo so I don't think I really need Provoke. What do you folks think?

    Thanks for looking.

    DM/Shield help

    Hi Sole!

Ahh I don't mind sharing my builds at all. It's always good to have other people look them over too, maybe they can be improved ya know.

The open slot in tough is for the PvP Gladiator unique that works like the Steadfast unique adding 3% defense.

Phalanx Fighting does grant the base value defense solo.

    Good luck!

  8. Good advice Prey! I am presently working on my Fire/SR brute and I didn't even know you had a guide. While I think I have his build pretty much finalized I'm defimitely looking forward to reading your guide. Looks like you put a lot of time and thought into it.
  9. Thanks for the replies everyone. He's a looong way from doing anything like this but it's good to know he may have the potential because he's so damn fun.

This was a good idea. I am really seeing a very different type of playstyle here. Much more thought driven than what I am used to. Multitasking and such. I was initially drawn to scrappers for their simplicity but this is turning out to be a great time. Of course it's hard to make any real judgements at level 9.

A few other questions if you don't mind.

When I try to build a high end scrapper I shoot for a sustainable attack chain (strong endurance recovery), highest DPS I can manage via high recharge. Then I try to softcap defense.

This is such a different playstyle I don't even know what to strive for in Mids. Of course I have weeks, if not months to figure it out actually making my way to 50 but it never hurts to ask the experts sooooo.

Is high recharge, softcapped defense, and as much +end as I can squeeze in a typical approach to Masterminding? The goal is to try to solo as much content as possible. I'm not a terribly team oriented player.

Currently I am having zero end problems but, again, I'm only level 9.

    Thanks for the help.

slot for end mod and go about your day...i dont want to see this argument again.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ahhh, no worries. It's not an argument. Prey's just asking for me to explain, which I definitely should have done in my post anyway. I was just in a bit of a hurry I guess. Handing out one line answers like I did isn't the most helpful thing really. Most folks want to know "why" as well as "what". It's just my opinion anyway, certainly suject to personal preference.
  11. I do it that way because in a longish AV fight I kill off all the minions with SD eventually. It's really just trying to plan for any situation I guess. Since the OP doesn't have CP I don't think he has enough endurance to last a sustained fight against an AV. Slotting it with Performance Shifters takes the +endurance from 25% to almost 50% against one mob.

Slotting DC for damage doesn't seem optimal to me since it's on such a long recharge anyway. The attack only rolls around once every 76 seconds. It's not going to hurt much of anything except the minions you most likely want alive to fuel your SD.

But, builds are about compromises. I eventually kill off my batteries because I slot SD as an attack to get the +Acc I feel I need to be reliable. It's give and take really.
  12. Ohh man,

I just recently crossed over to the dark side and I am really having a good time. It really does feel like I have rediscovered everything I enjoyed about CoH when I first started playing.

I have rolled a Brute since I am so accustomed to scrapper types but I am very intrigued by MM. I am going to roll one to play while my patrol XP builds up on my Brute, then play them back and forth for a bit.

    So, to my question.

As a total newcomer to MM my current concept is leaning towards Bots/Dark. I do have some experience with /Dark on a defender and found it pretty fun. If I get hooked on this combination and take him to 50 is it a strong performer? It looks like it would be pretty good to my noobish eyes. Could it be made to solo AVs? How about just general solo leveling?

    Thanks for the help.
  13. Hi Killer!

    Some quick observations.

You are probably going to have endurance issues in a long fight. I know Saint October's build is more endurance efficient and he still needed Conserve Power so I would recommend picking that up. Personally I would drop One With the Shield to get it.

I would also slot Soul Drain as an attack to get more accuracy in it. Against +4 you may find yourself missing too much. Nothing sucks worse than fighting an AV and whiffing SD and having to wait 30+ seconds for it to come back around.

Slot Dark Consumption with an Endurance Mod set.

While I like the extra defense you have above the soft cap, I think it may be a bit overkill. It's true you will suffer more defense debuffing than /SR against some AVs, and it's nice to have a bigger buffer in anticipation of that loss, but I think you would get more overall benefit just by slotting another Membrane in Active Defense.

    Good Luck!

I have a Dark/Willpower Scrapper that I have been soloing AV's with but I haven't tried Nightstar or Siege yet...using Dark Melee, do you think I'd have a shot at defeating them? I've mainly taken out the "easy" AV's so far (Marauder, Bobcat, Malaise, Countess Crey, Mother Mayhem, Chimera). Having taken out those AV's and using Dark Melee, what sort of chance do you think I'd have against Nightstar and Siege?

    [/ QUOTE ]

They can both be done with DM. I've done both with my DM/SD (video in sig). They do take more time. Nightstar in particular felt like a pain to me but you shouldn't have any real trouble. Just needs a bit more patience due the there resists.
  15. I played around with this. The best I could get was very close, under one server tick, which I was told I would never notice. In the end I didn't bother to spec into it as I didn't think it would allow me to accomplish anything that my current build didn't already do. It would be fun as a second build but just way too expensive to throw that much influence at one toon. Having two 2 billion inf builds on the same character and all.

Here's what I came up with if you're interested. Follow Up ends up with +298.95 recharge. Looking at the build still intrigues me though.

Isn't Battle Maiden weak to lethal? I remember reading that somewhere. Almost all her attacks have a -def component though. It still might be worth a try.

This will help you out with those type of questions.

To answer your question though. Battle Maiden is in fact 30% resistant to lethal.
  18. Ooohh Max,

That damn machine looks at me every time I walk into my Best Buy. I've seriously considered that. Blue Ray isn't a priority at all.

Comparing that one and the one I in my OP I'm really wondering if I'd see any difference in performance? They really do look pretty similar. I see the CPU is clocked a bit slower and the onboard memory has 512 ram as opposed to 1gig.

    Would I even know?

What about more current games? The one from Asus has a lower resolution screen 9totally acceptable) so that would actually improve fps a bit, possibly compensating for the lower memory on the video card?

    What do you guys think?

  20. Hello,

It's not technically a CoX question, but I have decided to buy a laptop. Since I'll primarily use it for this game and I know there are plenty of tech savvy players here I thought I'd ask the community for their thought.

Really there aren't too many requirements in what I am looking for.

    1. Somewhere in the 1000-1500 dollar range at the VERY most.

    2. Smaller screen is a selling point for me. While a 17 inch monitor wouldn't kill a good deal for me I prefer portability to a big screen. I'm not trying to replace my desktop. Just get my hero/villain fix when I'm out.

    3. Built in wireless.

    That's it really.

Considering this , but I'm not really in the technology stream much anymore. What do you folks think? Any better alternatives?

    Thanks in advance.
