Farming somewhat, but mostly just to be able to stand in the middle of a +8/+0 spawn and turn them into crispy critters. My only concern is that this character, despite having two good 360 degree AoE's, is still going to take a long time to clean up spawns. A willpower scrapper may be better off, but I don't know how well it would live compared to my tank. Also, I still think spines is ugly, and fire melee doesn't have 2 AoE in scrappers

Well, messed around with a few different tanks and scrappers, liking a lot of different setups so far, but I think I'm going to change my current farming settings. In an effort to maximize speed/profit so I can actually afford setting up some of my characters, going to leave it set at +8/+0 I think. Lots of things that can be ripped to pieces nice and quickly
The question is...what setup should I use? I've gone through a TON of them and picking which I prefer is really hard. So maybe people who are used to scrappers could lend a hand. I'm much more used to tankers than scrappers personally.
Spines seems to be the obvious primary since it has two 360 degree AoE's and Ripper which seems to hit pretty much everything in front of me. Throw Spines is of course useful but positioning it in the middle of a spawn swarm can be a pain.
Fire Melee was also one I thought of really quickly, but then noticed that it only has one real AoE (they took away combustion T_T).
Electric Melee was a maybe also, but...Spines still seems to pull off the AoE thing better.
Secondaries seems to be one of two things for me. Either Willpower for the massive regeneration or Shields for the massive defense. Unfortunately, if I go spines, I can't go shields, but maybe Super Reflexes? That still pretty much leaves me with Willpower though...the cascading defense failure from mobs that debuff your defense doesn't tend to happen for regen as much.
I dunno, just rambling. Any opinions?
[edit] I'm using a WP/Fire tank at the moment. How well will that fare eventually in the solo +8/+0 game you think? I don't have fire sword circle yet but at least right now (15) its pretty slow. -
Thank you for all the help so far. I suppose the only thing left to ask now is...will this build work? I've gotten numbers up to where I'm fairly comfortable, but it never hurts to ask

Any ideas on if /SS would be an even better set than /Fire for trying to solo? I imagine the constant knockdown of footstomp and the juggling abilities of the rest of the set would certainly help survivability. The question is would giving up the extra AoE and damage of /Fire be worth it? I managed to make a second character so I can use a decent concept for either of them...it's just a matter of figuring out which would serve me better.

Yea, I know /Fire won't help me survive, it will just help me kill faster. I figure WP/ is a pretty good way to survive all on its own. I was considering /SS somewhat but wasn't really sure about it. I know that it provides a pretty hefty chunk of damage once setup for rage, and that it's a fairly powerful AoE set once you get access to Foot Stomp, it's just getting there that becomes the issue.
Also, of course, /SS doesn't fit into the concept of Twilight Pyromancer all that well :P -
Willpower/Fire, sorry. The "powergaming" tank I made was Shield/Fire...sorta miserable with it honestly. Shields just aren't my thing, I chose them for being "better" and I regretted it pretty fast.

At the moment I'm already constructing an alternate WP/Fire tank. SS tends to get old for me for some reason...maybe its the lack of flashy powers, dunno.

I'll be using some expensive and some not-so-expensive ones. It isn't really the price of the sets that concerns me, I'll do some farming on my way up with friends as I start to finally build my badger. I'm mostly wondering if I'll just be able to do it without trying to go so far overboard with an extreme amount of min/maxing.
Mostly though I want to see what I can do with basic IO's. I don't tend to start picking out real sets until the 40-50 level range so I can get the most out of my sets. -

What I mean by power-gamey is, instead of trying to focus on getting the absolute max numbers to ensure I can wtfbbqpwn the biggest and baddest stuff in the game in 5 seconds flat, I just want to be able to fight on a standard 8-person map set to +0. I want to pick powersets I will enjoy instead of taking ones I don't simply because they have better numbers (aka, Shield Defense...I hate the set but its so strong =/) This will let me focus more on just having fun and not having to worry about being the biggest baddest whatever the heck monster :P

Maybe focus on some positional defense but...powergaming is killing this game for me. I want to be able to just swim into large mobs, they dont have to be massively high level, I just want to swim -
I was going for positional defenses. After that I went for endurance recovery. the damage was actually a nice accidental side-effect.

I did manag to get a 2.3 end/sec overage, was trying to find a way to squeek out .2 more but did not see a place I could do it easily. Sticking another EndMod into physical perfection would do it but I saw no way to move it down before 49.
The only thing I am still unsure of at all is taking both incinerate and greater fire sword. Do you need both?

Anyway, I did some mods, fit in phalanx for the extra 5% defense. I'm not fully slotted yet and have some IO's in there just as tests on this new build, BUT...do I need to make room for Grant Cover? As a soloer I know I won't need the cover part, but the defense debuff defense might be kinda nice to have. Problem is I have no clue what to replace. All I can see able to be removed is either Incinerate or Greater Fire Sword. But I would hate to give one of those up, and the other high-end powers seem needed. Any ideas?

I happen to like challenge. I just need to find out if I have a build that can take said challenge without face planting.
But you are right, I did forget that +4 isn't really ideal farming conditions. -
Mids does not let the bar go below 1 player nearby so I was wondering if you get any benefit at all for having the power on a primarily solo character.

Anyway, this is what I've come up with so far. I did manage to soft-cap all positional defenses and got about 3.5/s recovery with a 1.3/s drain. Not really sure how sustainable that is with attacking over the course of a long-term battle though. The steadfast protection also isn't strictly required but having a little buffer against defense debuff seemed a good idea for one slot. Anyway, let me know what you think.

I don't doubt that Inv is plenty powerful, it's just never been a set I enjoyed playing. Not really sure why I didn't like it though, I just had to much trouble getting into it.

I asked these same questions on the scrapper forums and they told me point blank to avoid playing a scrapper until I build up a sizable amount of money if I wanted to solo at +8 reasonably well. I figure maybe play the Tanker until I get the cash, then rebuild as a scrapper, dunno. The extra 1000+ HP makes me think I may stick with the safer route no matter what choices I end up with.
And how does fire have 3 AoE, 2 PBAoE and a cone? I see 4 single targets, 2 AoE and 1 cone. And then taunt and buildup of course. Unless I'm missing something? I could be, wouldn't be the first time. -
Thanks for the extra replies. An odd question: if you take Shield Defense, do you really need Weave? It's more icing on the cake than an actual needed thing as far as I can tell. On the other hand, taking a tank without weave just seems...I dunno...wrong somehow?
Also, how do you deal with confuse/fear when playing Shields over Willpower? I'm so used to Willpower I forget negative effects even exist most of the time.
[edit] And also, is /Fire going to put out more damage than a double-raged /SS tank? I only ask because /SS seems to be the "uber" popular set right now so there has to be a reason I suppose. -

Hmm...I wonder how hard it would be to soft-cap a Willpower without giving to much up in the process? Considering soft-capping makes you (generally) get hit pretty rarely the massive regen would more than likely refill your hp bar between the hits you do take. On the other hand Willpower doesn't do nearly as much good as, say, Shield Defense when you haven't actually taken damage.
Shields would give me a better overall kill speed and is VERY easy to softcap (on a tanker you don't even need the +3% IO's, may or may not need them for a scrapper) but if I get hit I'm going to need to get healing on my own. On the other hand, Willpower will give me the endurance I need to sustain the long fights with an army of grapes as well as recover me when I do get hit, but it's a lot harder to softcap and won't give me any damage benefit at all.
Also, when trying to soft-cap, if your going tank/scrapper is Melee the best one to shoot for since thats where you are? On a Shield it doesn't matter, you can soft-cap all positional defenses very easily. But on a Willpower I'm not so sure you can soft-cap all three.
I suppose the fact that I can't decide what to play means the company is doing a good job. If there was only one choice to make it wouldn't be very much fun now would it?
As far as funding goes, I have about 100m spread between all my toons. I do plan on IOing the heck out of one eventually, assuming I get it high enough level to make it worth it, it's just a matter of what can get me through the massive spawns the best.
