Quote:While I can see your opinion (as well as that of the person above you, which sort of meshes with yours) there's also the fact that a lot of us have been hoping for a bit more challenging stuff for some of our characters for a while, and "end game content" (which doesn't have to be "raiding" but some of it probably will be) is what generally fullfills that for level capped characters in most games). I'm sure there WILL be more content of which you speak because a lot of people like it (myself included) but I also like the direction they're moving now with Incarnate stuff. As long as it doesn't become the norm to have things like the CoP (even *I* don't like that) and there's different paths and types of content for everyone, I think we're still looking at the easiest (and more importantly) most fun MMO on the market. Heck it ain't like it's DCUO where it takes a week maybe 2 to hit 30, and all you do after that is raid for gear...More content along the lines of the ITF/LRSF (Barracuda would be okay if Reichsman had about a third the health he does; the ambushes and the temp powers to deal with them are actually pretty interesting, but beating down Reichsman is less so) would be welcome. More content along the lines of the Apex or Tin Mage Task Forces, however, would not.

So far, you don't have to do that. It's quite possible to solo the bosses in the last 2 missions, and as has been said on the forums here before, people have done it with sub-optimal builds and squishier classes. (I forget who ran "Best Defender Ever" just to prove to EvilRyu that it could be done). It's also true that, while it takes longer, shards can be earned by solo players. We don't actually *know* that the future holds for unlocking the other slots yet, so until what you're worried about goes into a beta you're in, or is out, you really have no grounds to say that so far. If you're talking about the BAF and/or TFs, you've always had to have a team to run that sort of stuff. It remains to be seen if those things HAVE to be run to unlock Incarnate items though.

Quote:Now, I haven't played any of these myself, but a friend of mine who played Exsteel for a while, when I asked about it said that the common wisdom was that you had to use the launcher, but in fact it was possible to trigger another updater in the folders (much like CoH's) and update the game that way, but to be sure I'd have to talk to them about that. That may be more what CoH is doing, but without talking to the devs, it's hard to know for sure.
From my direct experience, Aion, Tabula Rasa, Lineage II, Dungeon Runners, and eXteel all required the launcher be installed. They also required to be updated through the launcher, and would run the launcher in the background even if the user hadn't directly started the launcher.
CoH has been relatively unique in the NCSoft games I've played in that it has a separate launcher from the native NCSoft launcher. -
Quote:I expressed my opinion. (I don't like those arcs.) And you seem to find it necessary to attack me for it. Along with everyone else who says something you disagree with, apparently. My condolences for your apparent self esteem problems. But hey, if it makes you feel better, feel free to continue. *I* know how the Ignore feature works.
*chuckles* If *that's* your opinion of an "attack" I think you're the one with the self esteem problem there. All I did was tell you I thought your opinion sucked, I don't remember attacking you, telling you you were stupid, or saying anything about your "momma" or the like. Much like you, I was expressing *my* opinion. I felt the need to do that in case anyone was reading this who hadn't run those arcs, and might get the impression they were "forgettable" simply from your opinion. I wanted to give them another opposing opinion on the content, I've done that. Last time I checked, bringing one opinion against another was not generally considered an 'attack'. Now, that label might be appropriate to some of the responses I gave to others earlier in the thread, as they were quite a bit harsher, but for the most part those were not opinins, but people trying to push their opinions off as fact. You haven't done that...so far. But, to each their own. -
Quote:It would be difficult to do that, but here's the link I was directd to that the Cape put up: http://www.thecaperadio.com/forum/vi...php?f=3&t=8297Ooh, I hadn't heard that - do you have a quote of exactly what he said?
Although Atlantis isn't a total surprise
Speculate and interpret as you will. -
Quote:This is good to know. Perhaps the launcher is optional and/or won't work in those situations, and the "old" one will remain for that. The impression I get is that it is/was an "add on" for most NC games (like the Station Launcher) that you didn't have to use, but had the option to if you desired it's features. I know you can do some nifty stuff with the Windows Games explorer thingy with it, so someone told me...Doh, completely forgot to address this question.
.NET applications generally don't work on *nix type systems such as Apple OSX (darwin BSD) or Linux (linux kernel). .NET compatibility can be achieved through Attachmate Mono, but well, Mono lags behind .NET versions and may or may not be binary compatible.
CoH continu(ed) to use their own loader since it was compatible with the Transgaming Cedega / Cider Tech. -
As interesting as that was Je_saist, and as technical a person as I am, I'm not a programmer (thank god) or a developer of any kind, so most of that doesn't help me. To be fair: re .Net, LotROs patcher is, AFAIK entirely written in .NET and doesn't have any real problems at all (keep in mind this is based on someone running Windows 7 x64 with 8GB of RAM--it might be worse if someone was running XP). I wasn't so much voicing support for the NC launcher as I was complaining about some of the things the current launcher does to my system. Though i do sort of see WHY it does that now, thanks to your post.

Quote:That's really sad, actually. I think they're probably the most well-written and engaging story arcs CoH has ever had to date, and actually have some impact on the world (especially the Medi-porter issue) is very much like what would happen in "real life" if heroes had access to something like that, and regular people didn't. The villain arc is the first time I ever played content red side that actually made me feel truely "villainous" as opposed to just an angry person, or-kind-of-a-dark-hero-thing, because the things you do in that arc prompt the creation of a TF specifically to stop you.(I found the two new story arcs utterly forgettable, and now that I've done them once I probably won't do them again.)
But no, you're right, they're totally forgettable. -
That's my guess. Jay made a drive by at the cape the other day inferring stuff about Posidon and Atlantis. That combined with "Pressure" and some "Catgirl" comments he made, seem to make these fair game.

Quote:Except that's a patent and complete lie. Obviously by someone NOT playing CoH currently. They were ALL green for YEARS and OCCASIONALLY Freedom and Virtue would go yellow. Maybe even Red on a double XP weekend..sometimes. NOW if you play, on a WENDESDAY NIGHT AT 4AM EST Virtue and Freedom are Red and all of the other servers are Yellow (perhaps minus one or two) this has largely been true since GR's launch.im just postin what some guy on fb said, cuz i like his comment:
"Not all of the servers are dead, this is true. However, it's also true that this game is in fact dying. I've been playing City of Heroes for years, and while they've added a lot of new and interesting things, over time i've noticed t...hat the servers have slowly been drifting into the green zone on a regular basis.
Pay attention. -
I'm guessing it's less your "opinion" and more the fact that, like many on MMO forums you insist on passing your "opinion" off as fact. That tends to upset people. Sure, characters with more and better enhancements play and perform better than those without them, that's true in any game, and will always be true. There's also the thing about learning to play better to compensate for your lack of "gear" or whatever. There's also the fact that you can hand someone a "purpled out" "perfectly designed" full Alpha slotted Incarnate, and they can still die over and over, and may not, for example, tank worth a crap. That tends to end up being a personal problem, most of the time. No 'gear' in the world is going to make someone a better player. Gosh forbid the game have challenge in it.
-
Ah..a WoW-ite. Only someone from WoW uses the term "gear locked". Incarnates aren't "gear". Incarnates are that world-changing storyline/RP content you wanted. Nothing in CoH, except maybe the IO system even really qualifies in the traditional sense as 'gear'. You're approaching it totally from the wrong end... The arc takes an hour at best, and then you can run them if you want. So really all they are is locked by an arc. You know, how cimerora is locked by running the midnighter arc. yeah, that cimerora, the one you said was epic and world changing. or like how LGTF is locked by being able to go to vanguard (or used to be). Yes, the one you said was epic and world-changing. Seeing a pattern here? I know I am.
-
Quote:Because those were obviously about the main story of the world. So we can expect TF's for Incarnates and two arcs for everyone else that has nothing really to do with the world and are fillers?
Yay.
Because an arc about the mediporter tech in Paragon, and how it applies to everyday citizens has "nothing to do with the world" and an arc about the monster sleeping under Sharkhead Isle, and Villains vying to control it has "nothing to do with the world." Right. yes. That. Of course. Move along. -
CoH, IMO has little to worry about from DCUO. Has a lot of potential..but falls flat in the end, even with excellent voicework and budget. Lack of a proper "Superman" style Powerset when it's the brick-and-morter (note..brick) of the DCU is..unsettling. We'll see how it does. After long deliberation I dropped my preorder after a couple months in beta. CO on the other hand has a lot to worry about from it, but those aren't germaine topics for this thread though. Just expressing my support for CoH.
-
Short answer: Incarnate. Optional. Don't participate then.
-
Quote:I love it. people ask for "end game content" (which yes, implies you must be "End game level" i.e. Incarnate) it's given to them, and they complain about it. It's absolutely amazing to me...I should've gone into sociology...I'll probably get flamed for this but it sounds like I20 is going to be Incarnate only stuff...again?
I know it's a neat system and all but I would like some content that my characters that I haven't maxed to 50 5 years ago and then grinded out a bunch of shards and purpled out can do. I really see the incarnate system as little more than the COH version of gear gating content, just not AS bad.
This bothers me because I want to see the story of the game thats unfolding. However I'm getting worried I'm going to miss massive exciting chunks that are "Incarnate only! You must be this overpowered to ride".
Personally I'd prefer adding more to Praetoria but thats me. -
Quote:Nope, that's been normal for DB for the last year or so now..I should've expected it, honestly...This is your response to what is essentially a love letter from the producer to the players, talking about how much they want to keep the player base the focus, give us what we ask for and giving us hints and previews of things to come?
Am I missing a joke or sarcasm here? The letter just said they were going to focus more on communication, more on being on the forums, more on giving us previews of what's coming and you're saying they are taking the focus away from the community? -
Now, I've not used the NC launcher. But it's also worth noting the current launcher is kind of a piece of crap. it eats CPU and bandwidth resources (even on a near top of the line quad core) whenever it's patching anything, can't be left open to patch when patches go up, takes far more resources than it needs to take....yeah, it sucks. So hopefully this will be an improvement. I've always wondered why CoH, an NCSoft game, never used the NCSoft system, especially after they got BOUGHT by NCSoft.

Quote:You don't honestly expect this to change do you? Many of us (read: not the PvP community (what's left of it) are perfectly happy with it the way it is, and yet this stuff continues. I don't see PS changing anything (again) anytime soon, if ever. This doesn't distress me, though I'm sure it does some.This.
I was optimistic when they announced the changes to PvP...in divorcing the PvE from PvP, I thought they were on the right trail. I figured with two separate ways powers worked, they could fix stuff in PvP without worrying about how it was going to break PvE. It should be -easier- to make changes when things weren't working well, right.
I admit it....I was so utterly wrong. Oh, so wrong. -
Quote:I should've bet on almost exactly this post...I might've made like $5.00...It really bothers me seeing, I feel, the focus of Paragon Studios moving drastically farther and farther away from the community. I don't think I'm the only one that feels that Paragon Studios has little to no interest in a community that has existed since before the game even launched.
I am guardedly and cautiously optimistic about new communication and new red names, even though it seems to boil down to (thus far) a new advertising press release to read once a month.
Please prove me wrong. -
Quote:1) Auto-renewing wouldn't get you this promotion even IF it was in place, it has to be something you manually decide to do.Do they normally run this promo around this time? ie, end November-early December?
If so I will try to adjust my account so it auto-renews during that period anyway, and then I won't have to do an annual cancel/re-sub (that only works for the first year anyway, since if you cancel any time during the re-enlist period you lose the free months).
If anyone has advice on when they 'usually' run this (I assume it is not a fixed policy) please let me know.
Thanks much!
2) There'd be no way to "time it" since the 2 free months throws you into March regardless.
3) You don't have to cancel to select it, as clarified by BP earlier in this thread.
Personally I just did a one time paypal charge, and don't technically have a "subscription" now. It just means that it doesn't sneak up on me in 12 months and hit me for 150 bucks without my realizing it....twice. -
Quote:Yup. Here it comes, be prepared. You ready? Good. For those of you who, by my past experience, have stated, and probably will again, that I should get over myself: You are welcome to your opinion. I find it sad that you feel that I am not welcome to mine, nor that I have any right to express it without your derision.
This is for your own security, and the security of your credit card information, it is not a personal slight against you, that's simply how it is. I personally had to use 2 different cards and paypal besides to get all the stuff I wanted. While it'd be great if NC had a better system, that's not PS's fault, it's NCSoft's fault, their store and authorization systems are quite antiquated, and while I'd like to see it updated, that's on them to do. Taking it as a personal slight is...well over-reactionary and just...lame. Everyone knows this happens everytime they do something like this. I doubt BP has any more control than anyone else, and this is a high-up web-design/corporate issue. It's also a known fact Aion is a massive security hole that has caused at least one friend of mine to have their CoH account hacked (through the NCSoft link to the other games). Said friend was only in the Aion beta for about a week, and hasn't touched it since.
There's a lot of issues they could stand to look into, but the security denial is for your own protection, as annoying as it is... -
This would actually be a massive mistake for CoH, and would be a *worse* way for them to go, being a smaller game, they *need* the sub revenue. I also have it on fairly good authority DCUO will likely use the same standard MMO sub model, so I don't think you're going to see it "forcing a change" in CoH. CO did this to avoid dying in the face of DCUO, that, or they were already bleeding out so bad, it was a last-ditch to save the game. There's a good chance in 12 months or so, CO will be gone anyway, along with Cryptic as an MMO developer.

Fullscreening the game makes a difference in FPS usually (in a positive way), also Vsynch has a tendancy at times with the new UM programming to seemingly lock the game to around 30fps, though my SO doesn't have that problem with the same settings, I do, so I'm not sure what that's about. Have you used your SLI in other games?
-
Important question: Are you running with or without V-Synch turned on (either in CoH, in the control panel and/or both?) That's really important.
