Also, Apple had always keept an in-house version of OSX running on Intel CPUs since the jump to that new kernel, since, after all, the original OSX (NextStep) was an x86 OS.
I.[/QUOTE]
I know that this is an old thread, but I feel the need to correct you on this. I had a NeXT Cube at work, its was an m68k, while the originaleXTStep was not x86, OpenStep was (the next generation of the NeXT OS, written to run on standard i386 hardware.
NeXTStep (as well as OpenStep, and OS X are all based on the Mach microkernel developed ay Carnegie-Mellon, and as such, it was near trivial to port OS X to i386 based hardware. The Mach microkernel sits in between the main OS userland and graphical bits, and essentially means that you can run things not written hardware -specific on it. This was the point of all these translation layers that Apple had (ie. universal binaries, that had separate hardware dependent stuff in dynamic libraries, but the main programmatical stuff in other linked files that were exactly the same per application.).
The reliance upon Mach makes things a lot easier, because overall you just need to port the kernel and device drivers, and then the app just needs to have a dynamic library to hook into the specific hardware if needed (ie. PPC logic board hardwares, as opposed to Intel ones might have different coprocessors, different device drivers to hook into that the microkernel conducts information for - for something say, like CoH, the main architecture dependent stuff would be graphics - the cider implementation based on WINE would need to support the graphical engine for the PPC mac, via that abstraction layer, its too much work, which is why only x86 macs are supported, plus cider/wine was not ported to the PPC mach microkernel).
Anyway, enough of that, I just wanted to correct the assumption - the OS X architecture is not like say, Linux, or even FreeBSD... where the kernel is similar to Windows NT's HAL kernel... the device drivers sit on top of it, as does the application support layer, which enables you to have many different hardware architectures supported easily - if needed (ie. the ARM processor in the iPhone) -
I'm having MAJOR issues with the Mac client on my MacBook Pro (Early '98 version, 4,1 - 2.5Ghz, 3G RAM) - I go a few times, I play for about 15 minutes, and then the game crashes. Sometimes I have the resource issue where I cannot close the CoH window unless I ssh in from another machine, or I have it running Windowed.
Its ridiculous how the Mac version is so buggy, I don;t have this issue on my PeeCee, and I didn't have this kind of issue running under Parallels.
I can try and do some lower level troubleshooting, but its hard o do with no real source to use when debugging - both windows and the cider code.
The best I can do is attach a system call tracer and *maybe* a memory trace to see if something isn;t getting cleaned up - but thats not really that helpful. -
Jill, I know I didn;t see this earlier, as my personal life has been hectic, but I will miss you being involved with the game. It was always nice to know that someone that has a lot of common with myself and my partner was around, to talk to, and to voice opinions to. I see you as one of the reasons why the now "Paragon Studios" was so friendly to GLBTQI people in-game and out of game on the boards.
I hope they will continue to be so, but you will be missed terribly, just as Cuppa was before you. Just as nobody ever could step into her shoes, you never tried to, and now nobody could ever jump into yours.

The thing is, running under Trasganing, there is no "Mac only" version of the game, like Spore, Transgaming enables Windows versions to work on the Mac using translation libraries, similar to how Linux binaries run on FreeBSD.
At least now, we'll have a clean port, instead of some bugs being apparent through Crossover and Parallels.

I use Parallels rioght now to play CoH on my mac, and honestly, its the only reason I even have Parallels on my laptop... now I won;t need it! YAY!

What are we waiting for? Looks like all we need now are for comics to start getting submitted.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're absolutely right. I guess if the people getting paid to do community work aren't doing their job we should.
[/ QUOTE ]
Aren't doing their job? they've gone through several community coordinators recently, CuppaJo moved on, she was wonderful, Lighthouse tried, but I suspect Lighthouse wasn;t the one for the job, Ex Libris on the other hand has shown herself to be a very capable and hard working woman, that I respect as much as our beloved CuppaJo! (god how I miss Cuppa, but Ex Libris is turning out to be better than I could ever have hoped for in terms of community support, getting to know the community by talking to them on Global Channels, etc.)
Just because the Comic is not a priority for them, doesn't mean they aren;t doing their jobs, please refrain from comments like that, that are disparaging and insulting to people who try their hardest. Even I'm a little upset about the Comic, but I don't go do that.... and its not up to the community coordinator to fix the things we normally have the most major issues with anyway, its their job to explain it to us and take the flack which generally should be focused at developers, because as we all know (and I am a developer myself), developers are mostly malcontents who don;t deal with other people well. -
I'm almost 100% sure they are related, and you know what? you don't piss off your major benefactors. Marvel is putting money into Cryptic, only for Cryptic to give money back to a major competitor's ally company? (Top Cow/Image are now attached to DC in some way, not sure how financially tied they are, but all the Widlstorm stuff has somewhat crossed over with the DC universe recently with Infinite Crisis and all). Marvel probably said something like "look, we don't appreciate it, but we understand contractual obligations, so let the contract run out, and we'll even print one shots and limited series for you later on.... as long as we don;t have to take the burden of regularly producing a comic with very little value outside the gaming community"
Cryptic most likely said "that sounds fair" and went ahead with the deal. I think its a ok idea from am monetary perspective, though I will really miss the comic, depite how bad its gotten the last few months, 19 and 20 look like they'll be good enough to really make me wished they kept it going. -
Also, the Marvel worls is starting to flesh out being more like the "City of" universe anyway these days, with the Civil War and Initiative storylines. Hero registration? Can we say "get ready for our MMORPG world? and hey! it even fits canon in with our comics!!".
Seriously, I think that Cryptic is going to be spending a lot of time and energy on Marvel (by the by, isn;t Top Cow/Image now in bed with Marvel's Distinguished Competition?), and sending money to Image/Top Cow sure isn;t on the top of their list to piss off their benefactors, plus add the possibility that someone at marvel may get the idea to put out a one or 2 or even 6 shot limited series featuring CoH/V characters during major game storyarcs, I don;t think we've seen the last of it... and as someone said... we weren;t getting a monthly anyway, except for the last 3 months, its been largely bi-monthly.
Anyway.... here we go Marvel MMO, and I know for one, I would play it if they had a PC client, but I'm not buying an X-Box to play an MMO, as the interface is too clunky for RP-style gaming.
