It was in-game currency, and the proceeds went to in-game charity, if I do recall correctly.

Anyone saying the GM/AV/EB spawning that went on was unwarranted, or unfair, or unwarned either wasn't there or is just insane. There were several admin announcements, and DJ Jester warned us on the w00t Radio broadcast. Like BAB said, there were eight or nine instances of Pocket D, and GW only spawned anything in one at a time. I followed the entire event as best I could, and the whole time, people were begging for more and bigger enemies.

Please, don't complain about Training Room debt, especially when you weren't even there. I'd hate to think Cryptic or NCSoft might actually take you seriously and make policy changes because of it.

No comments on the gauntlet issue at the moment -- but I am reading the threads and taking notes.

  4. Well, no one is forcing you to read what the origins mean, but every possibility pretty much easily fits into its proper holder.

I'm not interested in the two of us repeating the same points back and forth, so I'll restate it one more time and call it done on my end. The word "mutation" isn't limited to this particular definition in the English language. As a CoX origin, however, it's usage is limited to mean, specifically, someone born with extraordinary abilities due to genetic mutation. Someone changed by something outside their genetics is Science origin. Not sure how that's debatable.

Whether you think the word "mutant" is fun to use in that case or not doesn't change what the origin means in the scope of this particular game. When you're creating a character, it's there on screen. The player gets to decide whether they want to acknowledge prescribed terminology or not, I guess. We can pretend Paragon City is in Wisconsin too.

The Mutant was born with his powers.

The Science hero received his powers either through purposeful scientific inquiry or through some accident gone awry.

SPOILER (highlight to see -- Only actually conceals on cityofheroes.com. If you're on the villain site, just pretend it's invisible!)
Lost are getting drugged up by Rikti and becoming Riktified themselves. As for the Rikti being born as screwed up as they are now, I'm inclined to agree with you on that. Whether that's Natural though, I'm not sure. How do Kheldians reproduce anyway? Are all Nictus manually altered to the negative energy beings they are today, or is their species propagating? They're considered Science officially, so the answer to that question would determine whether I consider Rikti Science or not, I guess.

But furthermore, that also discounts the fact that Rikti are still performing more genetic experiments on their own people, altering themselves constantly, especially with each new generation. Check out Timothy Raymond's story in CoV. He's gonna be a daddy.

    /SPOILER

Yeah, there are a near infinite number of stories we can come up with to explain who our characters are and where they come from, but Mutants are still just born the way they are, like the X-Men. That's the archetypal Mutant concept. That's what the origin means. If you're mutated by drugs, gamma rays, something else, that's Science.
  6. PMD and Foo, the two Thes, are correct. There are a great many things you could call a "mutation," but the Mutation origin refers to just being born a freak.

Internal, genetic circumstances make you Mutation. External agents along more (relatively speaking) mundane lines, like too much of the wrong kind of sun on a Tuesday, make you Science. Mystical energies and spells can change you as well, but that makes you Magic. Government-created nanorobot infection altered your cellular structure? Technology.

(Lost are Science by the way, just like Rikti and Nictus.)

BTW, if we wanted to talk about the ease of CoH post-30th level, I wouldn't be opposed to studying the Tanks, Scrappers, Controllers and Defenders. Do the Controllers or Tanks have any fear once they reach 30th level? Seems like the ones I meet are bored because their jobs become too easy and they end up re-rolling....

    [/ QUOTE ]

Fear? Yes, I've lived in fear since Lv 16 when I tanked Dr. Vahzilok. My defenses kept me alive, but I couldn't do enough damage to overcome his natural regeneration. It was a stalemate. Even if I can tank purples, compared to some other ATs, it takes me eons to finish a fight, even now that I have more and stronger attacks.

What's easy about my "job?" It sounds like you're referring to grouping, not soloing. If that is the case, then Blasters have nothing to worry about, by that line of reasoning. In groups, they can rely on a good Tanker or Controller doing their "job." The ATs work together, in their "jobs," and everything is great for everyone. That is, of course, excluding the fact that many Scrappers will be able to tank just as well as me at higher levels, and my low damage output will make me a gimped little leech to the rest of you who actually serve a purpose.

Solo, if anything, we're equally [censored]. Even if my defenses don't get nerfed in the future, increased enemy difficulty will be bad news for both of us. It takes me long enough to do things as it is now. Imagine my soloing enjoyment when the enemies get stronger. That, my friend, is why Tankers are "bored."

I understand your concerns about your own Archtype, but don't go thinking that being a non-Fire Tanker is a cake walk. And I'm Invulnerability. I have it easy compared to my sisters and brothers in Ice and Stone. And let's not get started on the soloability of Defenders.

Someone gave a fine example by using Batman. That's what I imagine me as a hero!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I wonder how well Batman would hold up to some of the stuff in Paragon City.
  9. Yeah, that would be the case under normal circumstances, but all the villains are in Paragon City. I guess they're... uh... dumb?
  10. [ QUOTE ]
But a minion is a minion. There can't be endless numbers of them at the power level proposed without game-world consequences. Consequences the background of Paragon City, at this time, doesn't seem able to bear.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't understand. I've been under the impression that since the Rikti War, things have gotten pretty bad, and villains are on pretty close though not yet equal footing with the heroes. That's why there are over 180,000 of us, yet we haven't cleaned the city up yet. Nor will we. City of Villains is on the horizon, and to me, all this adds up to mean the villains in Paragon are more dangerous than your average fist-fodder henchmen.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
Secondly, you guys call yourselves Tankers?! They should rename this AT to "Bunch of Whiney Old Women(tm)". You guys absolutely disgust me.

Everything from the worst oversimplification (Heph) to someone up there "weeping" about this game. Take a hanky and get a life son. Tankers don't weep.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Krunch, you should get a freaking medal for that.

Solo_4114, you hit the nail right on the head as far as I'm concerned. This is a "City of Heroes," yes. But it is also, and here's the kicker, a "City of Villains." The wars we're waging on the streets of Paragon are wars between superheroes and supervillains. As you get stronger, you go after stronger foes, not just larger XP containers. The "minions" you're fighting at higher levels are not the little flunkies you fought in the newbie areas. If you went back to Atlas Park and Galaxy City, you would get the effect you're looking for. Try fighting those Lv 1 minions at Lv 50. Now try fighting Lv 50 minions at Lv 1. Tell me you don't notice a difference.

Stop thinking of yourself as stuck in a level area. In fact, for one minute, forget levels altogether. Maybe that'll put Stateman's point into better perspective.

    [ QUOTE ]
Banging on the same 3 minnions at 50 that gave me a run for my money at 10 is not my idea of a hero.

    [/ QUOTE ]

An interesting straw man, here. It ISN'T the same three mininons. They're level 50 - not level 10 minions. Different art, different powers.

The "super" in "super hero" comes as one levels - what was once hard (i.e. red) becomes orange, yellow, then white, etc. What was once really hard is now easier.

That's how it is in levels 1 to 22ish. It works there.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's exactly what I just posted. I agree with you 100%, Statesman.
  13. I agree with Statesman, and I agree with Krunch.

And by the way, the enemies you fight at higher levels are not of the same calibur as the ones you fight in Atlas Park. They get stronger, not just in level, but in concept as well. You're arguing about the comic book feel and saying that three Hellions are just a strong as three Freakshow, for instance?
