Quote:Disagree... Bots/Storm does not synergize well at all, because the assault bot causes the enemies to flee in terror in all directions which storm only has one tool to counteract (Freezing Rain) and the slow from that isn't really that strong. Storm relies heavily on being able to keep the enemy contained where you want them, taking a primary that screws that to hell is sort of counterproductive./Storm covers a lot of Mercs' weaknesses. You get significant -resist in Freezing Rain to make up for the Lethal damage plus good damage mitigation and mob positioning tools to keep the enemies back away from your henchmen and hopefully clustered up in a corner for AoEs. Get some decent recharge and add an Achilles' proc to Freezing Rain and Soldiers and you'll be doing good damage and almost never missing.
Of course Bots / Storm is going to do everything Mercs / Storm can do, only twice as well. But at least Mercs / Storm should be decent. After all, the worst MM combo is still stronger than half the other ATs in the game...

Stand next to your minions with it on after a fight and you'll definitely see a difference in how fast they regen.
-
The names are demonlings, demons, and prince.
I've tested those and they work. -
I find suppress pain to be absolutely invaluable. Slot it with 3 heal SO/IOs. It doesn't really need any end redux, it's already a really cheap toggle. With 3 heal SOs I find it means I have to heal my pets far less often, and that if I tankermind, I actually regen faster than damage can get through bodyguard mode, most of the time.
-
I know I'll get flamed for this, but Mercs has been my favorite MM primary before the introduction of Demons. In my opinion there is at least one reason to take Mercs over others, and that is that they are a ranged set that doesn't make the enemies run away.
Thugs and Bots both cause a ridiculous amount of enemy scatter due to fear effects in burn patches and such, and it drives me up the wall. Knockback I can sort of handle, and with the right secondary (Storm, for instance) I can even make it work in my favor. But the fear flag on area damage powers is just a ... bad word... to deal with, and I find my henchies go running off after runners and draw aggro from nearby spawns entirely too much.
And I don't really like melee pets. So Mercs have been my favorite. My Mercs/Storm is amazing, and my Mercs/Pain is ok.
I'd actually argue that Mercs is the best synergistic fit with /Storm of all the primaries. -
For anyone who didn't catch it when I posted them in beta. Change "D:\Games\COHBINDS\" to the folder you make the files in. If you already have all.txt, you don't need to replace it.

I don't believe software patents have any merit. Software should not be patentable.

Then watch Numina wipe your whole 8 man DS MM team by herself.
(True story btw... tho we didn't have a DS/Dark on board, which would have changed the playing field significantly) -
AE > Badges >>>>>>>>>>> PVP
I like the AE. It's a place where I can get my SMASH! on without the annoying bits that come in between missions like travel time and text boxes that I don't read.
I'd play it more if it were easier to get groups.
Badges I just don't see the point of. They don't do anything, and anyone can get them. So they're useless and don't even represent an uncommon accomplishment or at least put you in a small elite group.
So the only badges I ever bother myself with are the ones that I need for zone access, or the ones that get me accolades which do something useful.
But even the badges that I find entirely pointless get ranked several steps above PvP, which I actively detest, so I have literally less than zero interest in it. My interest level is a negative number. It's dull, boring, frustrating, and not enjoyable in the slightest.
I'm not saying that it needs to be fixed up, I'm saying there is absolutely no way that PvP could be implemented in a dice-roll RPG environment that would make me like it. -
Am I honestly the only person who's dying for GR just so he can play a Kinetic Melee/Energy Aura brute?
-
-
Ok, call it... Time of death, 9:29AM.
Now everyone stand waaaaay back, the rezzer is a thermal. -
Dude, that's not even an argument. Super strength isn't knockback heavy, and that's about having superhuman strength with which to punch people (Also known as imparting massive amounts of kinetic energy to the target through means of physical contact
). There's no evidence to say that it's knockback heavy right now. All we have is a video that probably wasn't even footage of gameplay (More like a demo created by hand, like the machinima we can make ourselves).
Your doomcrying is absurd. -
I think all the people assuming this is going to be KB heavy need to remember that KD always becomes KB when the mob is killed... And we never see any mob KB'd get back up again.
We see mobs on their feet afterward, but this is a demo video against non-functional enemies, so I'm guessing it's just a dev spawning new ones between camera shots.
Also, just from the speed of the mobs falling when knocked down, I think they might have done the video in a little bit of slow motion to emphasize the animations.
So quit whining already. -
Quote:You can only find fault with the principle of the ends justifying the means if you believe in objective evil. And since you literally can't prove the existence of evil, it can't be objectiveThe problem with that is the old adage "the ends justify the means." For those who believe that the ends justify the means, they will willingly do evil acts in an attempt to bring about the greater good. They know what they are doing is wrong, but it's for the greater good, therefor the evil acts that bring about the good are in and of themselves acceptable because they bring about great good.
I've come to the conclusion that holding the philosophy that the ends justify the means is in itself an inherently evil philosophy. Despite the fact that it is intended to do good, it very well may fail in that regard because more evil acts may be committed to achieve that good goal. All the good that was fought for might be lost completely with those evil acts. -
Quote:Or you could just, you know, wash. Also, for people with poor hygiene, circumcision reduces the risk of several (non-sexual) infections
Considering that studies show that the rates of those infections are not higher in areas of the world where men are not routinely circumcised than in areas where they are... The argument was blown out of the water years and years ago. But people keep parroting it.
The statistical difference in rates of HIV infection are "significant" but also very, very small. Practicing safe sex is a vastly more effective method
Neither of these concerns really justify lopping off a part of the body. -
See now, I'm in the camp that circumcision is evil full stop. But that's because my aesthetic is violated by inflicting pain on babies for no good reason... And there are no statistically significant health benefits to circumcision, while there are several statistically significant complications of the procedure. There's a reason why the American Pediatrics Association denounced the practice, and the AMA no longer endorses it as anything other than an optional, purely cosmetic procedure.
Since I'm also of the opinion that parents should not have the right to give consent for a completely elective purely cosmetic procedure for a child who is not old enough to express his own wishes, well my conclusion is self-evident.
But again, that all rests on the fact that inflicing pain on infants is in violation of my aesthetic. If it wasn't, I suppose I'd have no problem with the practice. Which is why morality will always be relative -
Quote:This is not true. When you're running the Sister Psyche TF, at less than max level for it, with SO only toons that haven't been twinked out with a fortune from a higher level toon, and 6 of your 8 players drop leaving just an archery blaster and a tanker who has not soft capped or maxed out his resists (I forget exactly what kind of tank the guy was) you will find that there are things in the game you simply cannot beat, full stop.Anything in this game, can be beat without the use of Shivans or Bukes. So, it has no effect on the PvE game.
The two of us decided we would pick up Shivans and make another attempt, because we could get Clamor down to almost half health before she finished us off. So we hit Bloody Bay, and the aforementioned Stalker and Brute started ganking us, camping the firebases and basically making ***** of themselves, considering they were just chain-ganking us, clearly not making any rep for most of the kills.
To me, that's not someone being a friendly competitor (Which is something that barely exists anyway, despite the fiction people would like to maintain about competitive activities in general) but rather someone acting like a schoolyard bully.
This duo of people obviously were not seeking an actual challenge, but rather just wanted to have fun by making things not fun for others, griefing, in short. And yes, I have zero respect for PvPers who talk about the challenge of PvP and how PvE is so lame and boring because it's too easy, and then spend their time ganking people who have not built their toons for PvP, do not have a PvP skillset as a player, and will not provide any kind of challenging fight. This is bullying to me, not gaming.
This was in the wee hours of the morning, which is why I had suggested we should hit the zone, thinking it would be empty. The fact that this duo of villains were camping the zone at an hour when there was clearly not going to be any competition tells me they were there to be jerks to people who only want to pick up a Shivan and get out.
So we decide if we sit in the longbow base by the helicopter, they might get bored and go home. No such luck, they start teleporting us out of the base and ganking us. My blaster has a raptor pack and neither of these guys can fly, or even superjump, but the tanker is getting owned.
My response to bullies in the real world has always been to punch them in the nose. So I told my friend, after tricking the jerks into getting droned, to go and sneak out along a route he wouldn't likely be seen while the two were coming back, and I set a trap for them. I switched to a squishy toon, and waited in the base like I was there for the zone time badge. They couldn't resit the bait and tp'd me again. Sadly for them the squishy I had switched to was my level 50 completely IO'd out Fire/Kin farmer. Who already had a full set of Shivans. And an Amy.
The instant I was tp'd I summoned the Shivan. Hot feet did what I expected and revealed the incompetent stalker by doing some damage. I slapped him with my hold and summoned Amy and he was dead before the Brute could really wade in, which meant he ended up dying too.
Final proof that they were pathetic little bullies? They left the zone.
Again, satisfying, but not in the least way fun.
Tanker friend got his Shivans, I switched back to my Blaster, and we went and finished off Clamor and succeeded at the TF. That was fun.
However, I'd be happy if they removed Shivans from the game entirely, as long as they take them out of PvP zones.
PS: Make all the fancy arguments you want, but I know every last one of you PvPers who want the Shivans and Nukes kept in the PvP zones are just bullies who like to beat up on people who can't or won't fight back. There's no good reason to keep them there other than to bring people who don't want to PvP into PvP zones, and the only reason you would want that is if you are a bully who enjoys causing others grief. End of story. -
I tend to agree with Lestat's savage garden concept, from the earlier Anne Rice vampire novels. Morality is nothing more than aesthetic preference.
-
Quote:Except that some of us can't have fun when PvP is involved. I've only had ganking punks ruin a run through a PvP zone a few times, because I tend to hit the PvP zones at odd hours if I want a Shivan or Nuke (And I couldn't give a crap about badges in general so I don't badge in PvP zones at all). And one of those occasions I actually pimpsmacked the little Stalker punk and his Brute bodyguard singlehandedly. I took satisfaction in ruining their fun, but it wasn't fun in the slightest for me. Satisfying yes, because I think they're jerks, and it's always satisfying to wipe the smile off a jerk's face, but fun? Not at all.
Having PvE badges in PvP zones is only "bad design" or a "bad idea" when you operate under the assumption that PvP needs to be excluded or you can't have any fun getting your badges.
I do not like PvP. I simply cannot have fun in that sort of competitive atmosphere. It's nice that you can, but a large segment of the playerbase simply cannot and never will. It's the height of poor design to keep trying to force them into the PvP zones when they're never going to have fun there.
That's why it's bad design.
Nothing awarded in a PvP zone should have any effect on the PvE game at all. If Shivans are going to be in PvP zones they should ONLY be usable on other players. Same with nukes. Same with anything placed in a PvP zone, ever. Including PvP IO drops. -
Well, obviously you can just go there in the wee hours of the morning, or not go there at all... But ultimately it remains a horrible design decision to put things like shivans and nukes and badges in PvP zones. PvP and PvE should be completely separate without the slightest overlap, and nothing that a PvEer might need should ever be located in a PvP zone. Anything less than this will always result in rage on one or both sides.
-
I blame the devs for putting things of value to PvE players in PvP zones. There really shouldn't be. I know they're trying to lure players into PvP, but that's a stupid idea that's never going to work. It will only ever result in conflict of this nature.

Quote:I'm still not seeing your point. Obviously NC would have to pay tax on the revenue earned, the fact that inf is not actually currency with an actual monetary value simply reinforces that point. But there remains no sales tax, and since I'm not suggesting they create an "exchange" like LL runs, but rather a store where groups or individuals could register an account and sell inf through an in-game interface, no one but the inf sellers would need to worry about being taxed since they'd be the only ones making money.Actually it IS true. It's your analysis that's wrong.
First, Linden Labs does get taxed on the revenue they realize- and that revenue includes its earnings from the sale of Linden Dollars. They're not taxed on the SALES TAX, just as many other "services" aren't taxed online.
There are two areas to look at here. The first is point-of-monetary-transfer (where you exchange L$ for real $)
Linden Labs DOES have to report their own L$ sales as revenue.
Individuals that buy and sell L$ ALSO have to report this as income to the IRS. Most don't, but they should- and if audited, they could face tax evasion charges for not reporting that income if they exceeded the threshold amount (it's considered self-employment).
-------------------------
Next: the "Virtual Exchange" (exchange L$ for L$, no real money exchanging hands):
Where things get VERY wonky is when you run into the US Federal Tax's "Barter Laws." These were designed to address an emerging issue back in the 80's. Groups started printing catalogues of services they'd offer in exchange for 'points' that could be exchanged for other services. (X prepares Y's legal docs for 8 points each, then pays Z 8 points to do his accounting for him). In the mid-80's such exchanges had catalogs the size of phone books detailing services and goods available. Since no money exchanged hands, there was no "income" and therefore, the idea went, no INCOME TAX!
So, the federal government changed the law. Now ANY exchanged service or good that has real monetary value (i.e. that other people would normally and legally pay for), should be reported and taxed as if that real monetary value exchanged hands-- regardless if there was any real money involved! (there's some latitude for "favors" like mowing your elderly neighbor's lawn for free, but really not too much).
-------------------------
If you apply that to video games, the theory goes... it's practically all there. We exchange points (influence) for goods and services. If these goods and services were legitimately available for real money too, then the law's wording suggests that we'd ALL have to track and report all our non-money in-game transactions too.
--------------------------
Do we do that? Hell no. The law would appear to COVER that as it was written, but most doubt that it'd ever be APPLIED that way.
Instead, we treat online games more like we handle "Poker winnings." When you think of it, buyable influence or L$ is like giving cash for a poker chip. You might lose that chip before the night's out... or you might gain a hundred more... heck, you could gain a hundred more then lose it all before you're done. You're not assessed on every "transaction" when that chip (which has monetary value) exchanges hands. You're just taxed on your overall winnings.
In L$ terms: we don't report taxes on anything we (the players) earn in L$ until we exchange it out for real $. Then we report it as earnings.
The screwy part- all the laws governing reporting gambling revenue are so narrowly defined that they REALLY can't be applied to MMO's, but we tend to follow their prescribed behavior because they make more sense than the more broad -and more applicable- laws that govern barter networks that would bring online gaming to a grinding halt.
If the barter laws were going to be a problem then everyone playing SL would be getting in trouble for not reporting their L$, which they're not. As you pointed out, they only really need to report what they take out of the exchange in actual cash. Though this is of course ignoring the fact that SL is an expense for the massive majority of players, and even content creators usually only make enough to slightly defray the cost of playing the game, so only a few players would really even need to report it as a source of income. The situation would be similar here: Only the few people using it as a business would need to worry about income tax, and honestly most of them don't live in the US, they live in places where making a few bucks a day is a livable wage. -
I'll admit I can't stand the Kheldian lore. It smacks of super goofy "cosmic" comic book plots from way back. Also there's a rather shocking amount of similarity to D&D's Kalashtar race. Which I also find a bit dumb.
So my Warshade is simply a sorceror who became infused by powers from the great beyond. I find that sort of idea vastly more palatable when it's not explained in too much detail, because that always makes it start looking ridiculous.
So basically I pretend Khelds don't exist because I don't like them.
My VEATs on the other hand are cadets who escaped the training program. -
And again, you're dodging the point that a years old MMO (Though I use the term loosely) has a developer sanctioned (Heck, they run it) currency exchange without having all of these legal problems that people keep claiming would instantly occur if the devs allowed RMT officially. Obviously it wouldn't happen.
