I disagree. I believe that a game such as this can produce both a fun solo and team experience. We've come along way baby from the old days of coding.
Especially with instanced zones and missions. It makes the production of fun, rewarding content much, much easier.
Think about PvP for a bit. That HAS to be solo viable and also team viable. You can't produce a multiplayer game that says, you have to group or you can't enjoy PvP or PvE.
Unless the game has been created from the get-go to be one or the other its just not good business.
If the developers of this game are smart, and I'm sure they are, they will develop this game for both, solo and team player. -
One problem that MMORPG's face is trying to strike a balance to give a little something to everyone. Usually what happens is no one is really happy.
A mmoprg in development should have a mission. It should Identify what "type" of mmorpg it wants to be then stay the course even when the "vocal few" start their tirade.
Case in point..SWG...nuff said.
What I hope CoH doesn't do is loose sight of its main mission and starting vision.
I believe that was to make a fast paced, action oriented MMORPG that allows EVERY AT to have a fun, excitine experience....
Adding obvious time-sinks, making the journey too long and drawn out with little reward in between will get CoH off track.
This game cannot compete with the more traditional MMORPG's about to be released....But they can kick butt in another area......Fast paced fun, with the emphasis on fun.
If your game is mainly about great combat and powers(we are Heroes)then stick to that........Don't start implementing spawn camping and drudgery.
Honestly, I believe the key to CoH's longevity is in its ability to fill a niche in the MMORPG market....
No crafting, no housing, no uber-items gotten through spawn camping......But, holy mackerel powers and lots of BOOM, WHACK, ZOWY, style combat and progression.
Back to your roots CoH............K.I.S.S. -
My, my. People STILL are questioning others and the way they play???
Unbelievable. If I want to solo in a online game how hard is that for you to understand?
Listen, take a poll. Ask the percentage people solo as opposed to teaming. Go ahead, I'll wait.
You're gonna be suprised by the answer. In this MMORPG and ALL others there are tons of paying customers who love to solo.
They also love to be able to chat whilst doing so. And to see other "real" humans interacting within the game.
But what ever reason a person has for soloing it isn't wrong just because you don't understand it.
Who said MMORPG meant you had to group?
Its arrogant and simple minded of you to even question others and their play style.
That aside. Thank You Statesman for responding in this thread.
I hear what everyone is saying, and I understand most.
But I still think that if I want to follow a story arc, solo I should be able to. Come on its not that hard to code in.
Just give me two choices on the mission screen.
Go take down villains in the lab(with AV)
Go take down villains in the lab(without AV)
Sound easy? I bet it would be.
Done. Simple, painless. -
Wait till you finally reach 40+. We'll see what you're saying then.

Read my post again. I never said they WEREN't working as intended.
I'm saying that that is a wrong approach to missions that people do solo.
I know the Dev's think the AV's in a normal mission is fun.
I don't.
Are AV's working the way the Dev's intended? Yep, more than likely.
But thats where my beef is. I think that the AV's in a normal mission are just going to be by-passed by recruiting a bored lv 50 to kill them for you.
Watch and see.
Also the Dev's feel that Blizzard(my 32 ice power) is working as intended.
Now ask the Ice blaster what they think of that. -
You have defeated a AV that you fought the same level you received the mission?
Or are you talking about people waitting till they level 2 or 3 times then go and take on the big bad AV?
I really want to know if there is a AT that can take down a +2 or +3 AV solo...
Sorry, I just have a hard time believing that. -
The moment I feel most of my time doing missions has to be in a group is the time I move on from this game.
period. -
I have never, ever got a AV that was even con. Always purple con, +2 or +3.
Ok, so you're saying just leave the mission and level a couple of times and go back and do the AV?
Isn't that also by-passing it and waitting till you can handle it easily?
So again, whats the point of a super hard AV in a normal mission?
The next time you get a mission and it has a equal con AV, give me a tell, I want to see this. -
Go solo Bobcat. Yeah right, people solo AV's all the time. Sheesh, you think I don't know how to play my AT?
Yes, AV's are suppose to be hard.........Thats why they should be kept in trials and Tf's.
Not solo players normal missions.
This game is steering away from being the casual, solo player type game it was touted as.
Why oh why do we still have to equate Hard with Fun?
Yes a challenge is always good. But not to the point where you feel the need to by-pass it.
Getting a lv 50 to finish off your mission will be the normal way in the future, mark my words.
What kind of fun is that? -
In the 40's you get alot of missions with a Archvillain to arrest.
Of course this is impossible for a single Hero to do. Most times the pick up group can't do it either.
What is happening on a regular basis is people are clearing their mission except for the Archvillain then exiting and recruiting a bore lv 50 to quickly come and dispatch of the AV.
This will become the norm as more people hit 50.
So, tell me what the point of having a super high villain that is impossible to solo as a mission objective?
Its just becoming a slight annoyance not a neat game feature.
Get rid of AV's from mission that are attempted by a solo player.
Thanks. -
My criteria for staying long term in a MMORPG is the ongoing ability to solo and experience the game fully.
The moment(read: Trials of Atlantis)the developers start forcing me to group to experience more content in the game is the time I say Adios(good bye).
